Thanks, Jay. Lighting is just a couple of goose neck desk lamps with LED 
bulbs, a few sheets of wax paper in front of the lights to soften it. 
I'm not sure if it really needed all of the those images for the stacks 
- I just adjust the focus as little as possible for each shot. Better to 
have too many stacks than too few.

We had some go to seed during the summer which pleased the birds.  I remember 
taking photos of a bird feeding on them but I don't think any of them turned 
out very well.

I like step two better than step three. More contrast. I would like all 
of them more if it was shot with more depth of field. F16 might have 
been enough.

The original shot was unremarkable.  However, I desaturated the photo, and
it started to become something.  I adjusted the contrast and shadows.  I
found that there were some distracting highlights in the background, so I
took the paintbrush tool and got rid of them.

Tech:
*istDS, Sigma 70-300 (macro mode), 1/1000s, f/9.5, handheld.
