Re: PESOs: Backyard Birds

2024-04-30 Thread Rick Womer
What Henk and Alan said! I have always enjoyed your bird photos.

I’m particularly fond of white throated sparrows for their song. Philly isn’t
in their range, so I con’t hear their song until we go to a New Hampshire lake
for a vacation during the summer. That’s my “happy place,” and this bird
contributes to my enjoyment.

Re: A few Easter PESOs

2023-04-14 Thread ann sanfedele
Thanks for the back story... having known of it  mainly for its WWII
historical signifigance  I thought of it as a sad place to visit.

I have always loved your night photos of that area .. without knowing
exactly where you took them  - I dont' remembering you captioning
the Peso's with the geographical location.  (keyword phrase "i don't
remember" :-) )

Not only on Easter but also some time in autumn and over Xmas and the
New Year.

It has become a tradition and a kind of second home. We love the area
because it has a number of advantages. It's on the sea, we can be on the
Belgian coast in 30 minutes and in England in a little over 2 hours. We
can spend a day shopping and sightseeing in Kent and be back 'home' in
France in the late evening. We love the North Sea, especially when it's
rough and stormy. Did I mention the enormous steel mill and the sea port
full of great things to photograph?

If I could create the ideal place for me it would be just like that. We
might even have moved there, years ago, but with two elderly mothers,
things weren't as easy and now we're ourselves a little old for that.

In the meantime, things have changed. Our friend who used to take care
of our cats while we were gone hasn't survived her heart surgery, our
landlord in Dunkirk has fallen from the roof and most of all there are
the migrants, or rather the French police who think two guys in a car
with German numberplates hanging around at the beach or in the harbour
have got to be people smugglers.

A few Easter PESOs

We haven't made it to Dunkirk yet again, this Easter, so here are a few
PESOs from earlier years:

The Café du Cap Gris Nez was very popular with day trippers. It has been
closed and demolished in 2006 at the behest of local environmentalists:

Well done.

Beauty dish is the best portrait lighting.

Too bad more people don’t use them.

Umbrellas (“lots of soft light”) is the most boring way to shoot.

Covid came along and CANCELED my weekly folk music circle, and now I've

2023-03-06 Thread John Sessoms
Autoplay with no warning can be a real pain - especially when it's done
by some dolt who doesn't know any better than to run the gain to max and
damn the distortion.

I've lost more than one keyboard to coffee because of that.

OTOH, if you are going to include a link to the sound, it should be
right under the photo like a caption so you don't have to scroll down
excessively. Also make the audio link explicit:

... "Click Here to Hear -->" ... or some such

I liked the photos & the audio definitely sounded like diesel locomotives.

2023-03-04 Thread ann sanfedele
That's interesting..  I don't dislike "sound"  I just don't want the
experience of looking at a photo and losing oneself in it to distract me
or , in a way,
tell me what I should be feeling when looking at it.   When I was in
college I had a music radio show for a few months - I played the guitar
and the recorder and tinkled the ivories a tiny bit.. I made a video
about ten years ago of buttterflys which had music I had written  and
was playing on a piano when I was in my 30's as background.. so it isn't
all sound .. Just don't like other people picking it our for me :-)

anyway when youa re 86 and losing your hearing, everythign sounds weird.

better for me than speakers or headphones since they match the incoming sound

Ayup, capitalism and monopolistic practices won out

Monopoly is derived from The Landlord's Game created by Lizzie Magie in the
United States in 1903 as a way to demonstrate that an economy that rewards
individuals is better than one where monopolies hold all the wealth,[1] and to
promote the economic theories of Henry George—in particular his ideas about
taxation.[3] The Landlord's Game had two sets of rules originally, one with
taxation and another on which the current rules are mainly based. When Monopoly
was first published by Parker Brothers in 1935, it did not include the less
capitalistic taxation rule, which resulted in a more aggressive game. Parker
Brothers was eventually absorbed into Hasbro in 1991. The game is named after
the economic concept of monopoly—the domination of a market by a single entity.

The Market has existed since the early 1890s, on street level below the

Philadelphia Convention Center). The market is vast and busy, and I found
shooting there challenging.

At first I wondered what a “Terminal Market” was.

The photos you posted were quite nice, I can see why so many people would want
to go there.

It is weird to realize that the places on a Monopoly board exist in real life.

RE: PESOs (4) - Laurel Hill Hearse

I'm not sure it was ever used for funerals! The skeletal hand mirror brackets
and the slogan on the side window suggest a somewhat
jokey design - and the two-tone jars a bit too! But, good subject.

Our photo class visited Laurel Hill Cemetery last week. It was founded in 1836
on the outer fringe of Philadelphia, but of course it
has been engulfed by the city over the decades.

In front of the administration building is this antique Pontiac hearse, which
attracted photographic interest. Note the brackets
holding the wing mirrors.

It just shows how people acclimatize. I would still be wearing my winter

Alan, it was about 68 F / 20 C, but of course warmer in the sun. That is above
