The sad thing is I took a class on Technology and Society that I could
have actually used this to generate my papers.

Weird class - we had two textbooks - Brave New World Affluenza and
had to watch 3 films - Bicentennial Man, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,
and Gattaca.

I actually had my paper on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea MARKED DOWN
because I made comparisons between the BOOK, the movie and the cultural
climate of the times the movie was made.

The instructor didn't like my footnotes. Instead of standard footnotes
referencing the quoted text, I was supposed to just Xerox the page and
turn it in along with my paper. Plus I guess a four page paper was
too long.

The instructor was in kindergarten the last time I had previously
written a college paper, and the other students in the class weren't
even yet a gleam in anyone's eye ...

What's the point of requiring me to take a class if I'm not supposed to

Some people have their heads in the sand and live in a fantasy world,
and others want to impose their views on others and refuse to respect
 the rights of the majority.

In fact, that's pretty much what each side said about the other!

As much as I hate admitting so but your desription is dead on
I'll bear that in mind next time
Cheers

The rights of the majority are usually well looked after. It's the rights of
minorities that usually get stomped and which we need to watch out for.

In fact, that's pretty much what each side said about the other!

My post to which you're responding was, of course, tongue-in-cheek.

I have to say, though, that the concept of group rights is a bit
scary; there's always another group who ends up on the short end of
the stick.

I'm not engaging in hyperbole when stating that Hitler used what he
described as the group rights of the majority to exterminate Jews.

I like individual rights. Everyone has them, without exception. They
are the great legacy of the Magna Carta, running through English
jurisprudence, adopted by the Americans in their Declaration of
Independence and Constitution, and form the cornerstone of all those
countries who adopted Common Law.

frank

Yes and even then the rights of the minority are often trampled on
because as noble as we, or our society views itself, when there's a
crisis, or when the majority view becomes so overwhelming, or when
those in power become so blind to the needs of the lesser, rights are
essentially foregone.

Our laws are only words written on paper.

that's more or less how i felt about it too. but i also agree with
frank. after 3-odd years here and having seen this/related issues come
up so often, one knows exactly the positions the various regulars will
take on a given issue. nobody has changed substantially, including
myself, over the years. so am learning to let it all pass. except when
it involves outsourcing of course.. i'll take a little more time to
get a balance on that...:)
