Re: [Phono-L] ebay fraudlent seller

2012-05-06 Thread Randy Larson
Not sure my original email was received, but wanted to update all regarding
the Lithuanian fraudulent seller.
Paypal returned my money, and the Lithuanian con man came up empty with the
radar from paypal and ebay on the lookout for him.
One of the helpful contributing factors was the help I received from this
phono email connection. I mentioned to paypal that I was in contact with
other collectors on this email site that they were aware of a Lithuanian
conman with the same MO on eaby. Because I had alerted them on the day I
purchased the item, they withheld the funds until verified. He has no money
and we have his number!
Thanks again to everyone, this connection has been of great service and a
support for an emotional roller coaster ride.

Does anyone know if all Wells Fargo banks can immediately verify if a
Wells Fargo money order is good and then cash it for you free of charge?

If you request a USPS money order you can go to the post office and
actually check that the MO is valid and not a phony. Othe MOs may or may
not be capable of being verified.

Re: [Phono-L] ebay fraudlent seller

2012-05-01 Thread Darrell Lehman
I lost out on $500 'cause I didn't cash a phony $2800 M.O. He was going
to let me keep that (in addition to the $300 for the item) after I
mailed the extra $2000 to his son.

It was well done - the M.O. was drawn on a national bank. But having
STEPPED off the turnip truck I Googled the bank - they had branch only
two blocks away from the one the M.O. was from - Why so close? I asked
myself.

So I called their 1-800 #. I gave them the account number - I didn't
even finish before they told me it was a phony. The interesting part
was they didn't want a copy or have anything to do with it - great attitude!

Google's great - I also Googled the phone number of the bank on the
phony M.O. - it came up associated with three other numbers. I called
all four. They were businesses who had no knowledge of the individual
but had similar inquiries - they assumed the phone company had listed
the number wrong.

And all you have to do is let the buyer know you'll hold the stuff for a
week or two for the MO to clear. They'll either agree or go away.

best, Darrell

Have you ever heard those stories of a guy responding to a Chevrolet for
sale in a barn somewhere for $100. Turned out to be a 67 corvette, I think
there was even a song about it. I always wondered if that would happen on
ebay. A week ago Sunday, A Victor I was posted on ebay for $330.00 but it
now. As my heart began to pound, I couldn't believe I was the first, and
those who snooze loose motto popped in my head. I checked out the photo's

a roller coaster of emotions. The other motto of if its too good to be
true, it usually it also reared it truth of reality. I checked his ebay

The good news was that I alerted paypal. They said that they agreed that

It isn't phono related but I bought a 1909-S V.D.B. cent at a flea market
some years ago for a bargain price ant when I sent it in to a
certification service it turned out to be an added S mint mark to a
plain, old 1909 V.D.B. cent.

On one hand, bargains do turn up in attics, yard sales, and flea markets
but on the other, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Only
the smart collector and wheeler-dealers seem to know which is which. And I

Re: [Phono-L] ebay fraudlent seller

2012-04-30 Thread Vinyl Visions

Another scam related incident - I just won a music box that was a replica of
a Thorens machine for the minimum bid of $15.00 - parts missing, it really
wasn't worth much more. The seller cancelled the transaction because he/she
said that he/she was not comfortable accepting a Wells Fargo money order for
payment... like he/she was taking a risk - on $15.00? I was the one taking the
risk attempting to send a cash equivalent payment without first receiving the
item... I don't get it, except that was a way to get out of the sale.
Fortunately, in all of the transactions I have made in the US and Europe, I
only got scammed once, even though I have sent cash for payments... just lucky,
I guess, except most collectors are honest.

2012-03-05 Thread Aphonomike
Years ago at a local auction I watched an Amberola 30 go for $750.00. A
few weeks later I ran into the winning bidder and we got to talking about
phonographs and I asked if he had any for sale. He said he had an Amberola 30
for sale and I responded (before I could edit my mouth from my brain) You
will have to find someone else who does not know what they are doing to buy
that one.

I can usually win a bid against a dealer and sometimes a collector, but I
can never win a bid from someone who doesn't know what they are doing.

Sneak attacks are better, last second bidding. Why show your cards? And

Actually, this is the problem with placing proxy bids early on eBay.
He probably did not want to pay $1,000, but definitely wanted the machine
and didn't want to be sniped at the end, so placed a high proxy bid to
avoid being outbid. However, he didn't take into account the nutcase OCD
bidders who will keep bumping the bid until they discover your limit. Why
does anyone bid days ahead on eBay, since it's not an actual auction
anyway? The only thing that counts is the last bid.

Two possible ways to get a long series from the same bidder. In one
scenario, there is a higher bidder, and the new bidder keeps entering higher
and higher bids to try to outbid that higher bidder. In the second
scenario, a bidder enters one bid and then enters several others so as to
increase his original bid. You won't see any of those later bids until a
higher bidder enters the auction, and then all the other bids the first
bidder entered will appear that are up to the higher bidder, and one bid (if
one was entered) that exceeds the higher bidder.

It's probably someone who doesn't know what the machine is worth, they
both have lots of feedback (the bidders). I can't imagine paying more than

has a slotted crank, not threaded. My banner standard A has a threaded
crank and so have all the others I have seen. It must be relatively early.

Actually, this is the problem with placing proxy bids early on eBay. He
probably did not want to pay $1,000, but definitely wanted the machine and
didn't want to be sniped at the end, so placed a high proxy bid to avoid being
outbid. However, he didn't take into account the nutcase OCD bidders who will
keep bumping the bid until they discover your limit. Why does anyone bid days
ahead on eBay, since it's not an actual auction anyway? The only thing that
counts is the last bid.

Check the bid history, my point is proven. There is someone who wants that
machine for $1,060+That bidder is:i***l( 1259)
Obviously, he/she was determined to find the previous bidder's limit and then
exceed it, no matter what the item is worth. The lesson to be learned is this -
don't place a proxy bid for more than you are actually comfortable with paying,
because someone will try to get you to your max.

Actually, this is the problem with placing proxy bids early on eBay. He
probably did not want to pay $1,000, but definitely wanted the machine and
didn't want to be sniped at the end, so placed a high proxy bid to avoid
being outbid. However, he didn't take into account the nutcase OCD bidders
who will keep bumping the bid until they discover your limit. Why does anyone
bid days ahead on eBay, since it's not an actual auction anyway? The only
thing that counts is the last bid.

2012-03-03 Thread Mike Stitt
The problem with bidding early is as vinyl states. Also the bidder has a
feeling of ownership. That is to say if someone bids they are taking your
item away and you will attack with a new and higher bid. I use attack
because that is just what the lizard brain does...Someone took it away.
Sneak attacks are better, last second bidding. Why show your cards? And
never forget the person that will BUI, bid under the influence. eBay
encourages proxy bidding for a reason. They don't call 'em bidding wars for
no reason.

If you go back and look real hard at that machine you will note that it
is far from prime condition. The belt tensoiner looks to be missing in
action and the top does not aper to have a matchng finish but this may
be lighting. The corrosion on several parts is nota good sign though.

I bet it is the video that sold it though.

eBay would rather you used PayPal, so they get a cut of the payment, but they
can't forbid local pickup for cash and there would be a huge outcry if they
tried. If you are concerned about a stranger coming to your house, set the
exchange up in a public place such as a restaurant or your place of work. I
can't imagine any other problem (and in fact I just met a buyer today, who came
to my office building, and paid me $1,600 in cash for the two items he won).

Happy selling!

Thanks Steve. I have actually shared that advice with some ebayers who had nice
stuff but minimums were way too high. A few took the advice and got bidders
going.

My experience is that if you have a piece you know is worth money, and you
put a high minimum bid on it, many times no one will bid. If you put a low
starting bid and a reserve price on it, many times you will exceed your
expectations!  I once listed an Edison Gem on eBay, a very nice model B, and
I made the starting bid $250.00 and a reserve of $500.00. No one bid. I
relisted with a starting bid of $25.00 and a reserve of $500.00, and it sold
 for $750!!

Auction format selling has never been, is not now, and never will be a
completely rational process. However, as you point out, auction selling
can be interesting and can provoke curiosity for sellers, bidders, and
observers.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If I collected Gems on a large scale,
it would be unusual to have. One dead give away that the paint is not
original to the date of manufacture is the lid. Notice the flathead nails
on the edges to hold down the glue failure? Near the nails are gouges that
were painted after the nailing and in other spots are chips of the same type
not painted. It looks to my eye like it was done years ago but still old
enough for the lid to have become unglued in a hot attic or damp
basement...see mold on cylinder. Or not

Re: [Phono-L] eBay GEM - Is this real?

2011-04-10 Thread The Farmers

What is the purpose of continuing to beat this seller's description?
While we agree that it is highly unlikely the paint was applied at the
factory, the paint is good enough that a seller without vast phonograph
experience could easily think it looks as old as the machine, and therefore
as far as he knows was applied at the factory. It looks like this seller
sells lots of purses and boots, and is probably much more knowledgeable
about those items than the average phonograph expert. If I had a purse to
sell on eBay I could easily make wrong assumptions about it that the purse
experts would laugh at too.

And, whether painted at the factory or not, it looks very nice. If I owned
it, I'd keep it and display it alongside my factory-correct Gems.

Some of these enhancements were done in the early 50s, and during the
depression to improve mail order saleability of used phonos. To tell
 what
you are looking at you would have to be doing paint analysis to date
 it.

Does not realy look Factory though.

Re: [Phono-L] eBay GEM - Is this real?

2011-04-10 Thread Mike Stitt
Wow what a thread. I have a beautiful branded case gem, mint even with the
recorder. I also have some decals from the 50's that are flowers. I'm
willing to paint the whole thing black and add the flowers to the case and
horn. I will throw in a very early Edison Gem horn that has no decal but
Edison's script signature, like I said early.
I will be careful applying the old water slide decals to the case and horn.
I can add a bit of gold pin striping.
I was thinking a satin black on the lid.
Any offers?

Now I'm not serious of course it's just too nice a Gem. Just making a subtle
point. Done today horrifying, done fifty years ago double or triple the
money? Now to be fair I collect many things I do appreciate age/value. I
even have some folk art.

2011-04-10 Thread Rich
It does represent a spruced up GEM of times past. Not ever being
factory should not be an issue. This independent refurbishment was
common in the 20s and 30s due to the wonderful economic conditions of
the times. Well preserved examples are less than common though.

Apparently it didn't hurt the price on this one... $1,200+

That's what is puzzling about eBay. Some great items go cheap, and others -
like this GEM and the Frankenphone with the PVC horn elbow from a few weeks
ago, go over the top. Don't get me wrong - the GEM was attractively done, but
it would be great at $400-500, not $1,200.

Edison did offer special decoration but that was usually on the metal parts and
not on the cabinet. I tend to think some amateur did this, though it is very

Re: [Phono-L] eBay GEM - Is this real?

2011-04-09 Thread Vinyl Visions

Mike, the reason that the seller knows that is obvious in his statement:

Like most eBay items it starts with a statement of authenticity:
Extremely rare!
Body and case are wood, painted black, with gold trim on base and rose flowers
and daisy on case.
I have been collecting antiques for over forty years from coast to coast.
This is the only one I have ever seen.

So this is how he knows the paint is original:
HE has NEVER seen one. :)

Neither has anyone else, so maybe there is a reason for that... it is a one-off
previous owner painted machine.
It could have been painted by the original owner, shortly after it left the
factory and the paint would be
period authentic - 100 + yrs. old. The thing that looked non-factory, is that
the flower design on the horn
and the flower design on the case, were similar but not the same design/style.
The horn had the same gold
scroll work added as on the base - not a difficult task for an artist.

He is also correct, it is original paint. It is not a copy of paint, it
is original paint right out of a can and/or tube, and it is old. Now how
old is not defined. To some 10 years is old to others one thousand is
young. He is not claiming that this decoration was applied
contemporaneously by Edison, he is just leaving the gullible to make
that assumption. As the clear coat finish is cracked it was not done
last week though.

Everything on eBay is RARE L@@K!

2011-04-09 Thread john robles
So true about the rarity factor on ebay. Yesterday someone had a Victrola 50 on
there listed as very old and rare, and it was priced at $1,700.00. Never mind
that there are three others on ebay right now priced at around $350.00...

It could have been painted by the original owner, shortly after it left the

period authentic - 100 + yrs. old. The thing that looked non-factory, is

Some of these enhancements were done in the early 50s, and during the
depression to improve mail order saleability of used phonos. To tell what
you are looking at you would have to be doing paint analysis to date it.
Does not realy look Factory though.

Yeh John, but you could pick it up for a bargain price of $0.99 and
avoid the shipping cost as its right in your backyard isn't it?
Its a steal at that price! :) It would be worth paying the 99 cents
just to take it and smash it to bits.

So what else is new?? :-) Here is an item number that really burns me
because of their claims in large type that this is an original machine.
It burned me so much that I had to write to the seller with some
education. Not accusatory, just informative. I know it's useless, but I
couldn't help it...If this phonograph is from their own collection as
they say, they must have a bunch of crap.
