Just thinking

I will actually be in Edinburgh later this month, so could collect some
pieces then... 16th to the 19th..

Can also make a donation to charity in Georges name. Would like to have
something belonging to him.

Hi Richard,

I don't have a Q60, so would be more than willing to pay postage to have it

Maybe some other items too... A QL with Trump card and some of Georges
floppies etc found be nice.

Let me know if willing to post them. Certainly don't dump any of it.

The QXL software (SMSQ/E) is available from Dilwyns website too, directly
underneath the manual download...on the link I posted earlier. It's 153k in
size.

After that, there's tons of freeware available on Dilwyns site too.

You likely got confused with the Q40 and Q60. You definitely have a QXL.

Yes, it's definitely a QXL card... made by the late Stuart Honeyball of
Miracle Systems.

The ports are for the QL network as Graeme said... to connect to other QXLs
or standard QLs. A standard 3.5mm double ended jack cable is used.

The full manual is available free online at Dilwyns site, under the
documentation section.

You'll find lots of familiar faces, and generally instant responses,
including videos and photographs.

The group is now called "Sinclair QL for everyone" and is free to join.

2018-02-20 Thread Darren Branagh via Ql-Users
Hi Guys,

Please feel free to distribute how you wish, as long as Steve and myself as
credited.

Urs has already put a few of the interviews on his channel some time ago in
reduced quality, but this is the first time its been available in its
entirety as originally distributed and in DVD quality, including the menus
and slide information, which were done on a rostrum camera at london post.
Im really glad Dilwyn took the time to upload it, as it needs to be seen to
appreciate it...Its really quite a professional job if you see it as it was
intended. I learned a lot about DVD and video production making it, and
luckily we had access to some top notch equipment at the time otherwise it
would never have happened.

Im rather proud of it, Particularly the interview with Bill Richardson who
has since sadly passed away.

Re: [Ql-Users] Roy's book

2015-06-20 Thread Darren Branagh
Not entirely to blame... at several QL meets over the years, and in
Ireland, Roy and myself found ourselves sitting on the seafront or in a
beer garden, drinking wines and beers, and discussing our other love -
music.

Roy is a walking encyclopedia of rock n'roll roadie stories. I mean,
unbelievable. You just couldn't make this stuff up. He's worked with
Manfred Mann, Accept, UDO, Steve Harley, Kingdom Come to name but a few.
Not to mention his own bands, such as Dogwatch (who were bigger than the
stranglers for a time) and last post.

Most of the stories ended with me laughing my head off, and saying Roy,
you really should write a book.

Ashamed to say I haven't had the time to read it yet due to ill health, but
I plan to soon. I want to get one personally. I have no doubt it's a great
read.

mostly before he became seriously involved in the QL, it's only

Maybe try using msconfig to stop any of the AVG files running at startup,

Wow... that is the weirdest thing I've ever heard...

I would suggest backing up everything while it's still running.. the anti
virus must have a real foothold on the system... disabling it restored the
system to a sort of default status with only one monitor.

If booting was so slow with it disabled, it's unlikely to be that at fault..

No idea where to go from here, apart from running a cleaner and maybe a
defrag.

Very, very mysterious.

Ok, so it's not a swap space issue then...

Maybe try using msconfig to stop any of the AVG files running at startup,
and see does it run any better when you restart? If you do that, disconnect
your internet access temporarily to avoid getting a virus in the interim.

IIRC, this is why I stopped using AVG originally. I switched to Microsoft
Security Essentials for a while (don't laugh) and had no problems at all
with it taking over the computer. I only switched back after it became a
laughing stock in the computer magazines.

I have tried other antiviruses but all have their varying degrees of
uselessness. This seems to be a common issue with AVG, users saying it
slugs their machines. There seems to be two core issues:

 1. Even set to 'dynamic' or 'basic' (lowest processor hogging) it really
slugs the machine down during a scan. So I set it to run overnight and
 things like this happen.

 2. If the 'scan at startup if scan missed' setting was *ever* set and a
scan is missed, there seems to be no way of preventing it running that scan
at full priority until complete (that survives a restart), which is what
 seems to be happening.

I have set that not to scan after a missed overnight scan now, but lots of
people say that will only take effect after a *successful* overnight scan
(despite what AVG claim), so it looks like I can write off getting any real
use out of this PC until tomorrow now. Which is bad as I had all day to get
work done today but very little time tomorrow. Drat and double drat (as
some cartoon character used to say).

Backups - don't make me laugh. Windows backup won't work with 3TB drives,
NTIbackup seems to fail 2 days out of 7 regularly. I have no idea how
complete the backup is because of that and whether it catches up on the
weekend missed bits during the week.

Modern computers are a total and absolute joke. Everyone keeps saying
switch to Linux, but I know people who have and can't get anything working
for months, so I refuse to even try that route.

Hi All,

(Yes, still here, and always keeping an eye on things)

Bill's passing is very sad news indeed. A real gentleman. I always enjoyed
our Chats, and he was a dear friend for many years.

He even came over and stayed with me when researching a book he was writing
on old Hibernia Its a long story! Not to mention that really wonderful
QL Show we had, which was mainly held in the many pubs and restaurants of
Wicklow!!

Plus he managed to coax me into writing a volume or two of the Z88 Users
Magazine, a very persuasive businessman.

I am glad myself and Steve Reyal managed to get him to agree to being
interviewed for the QL 2002 DVD - I remember saying to Steve it was good to
get his story on tape as at 84 he wasnt getting any younger, yet he made it
for over a decade more. Amazing man.

Tony - yes, we interviewed you too, its here, in 2 parts:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AValszaKyg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NLPwkcUxPM

I really must put some of the DVD's together again. There were a few great
bits of video on there.

I wanted to try and Get Jochen and Roy too, but these were the days when
they were quite busy :)

Tony - if you are attending the funeral, and I'm sure you are, please pass
on my condolences.

There's a video of him on the QL2002 DVD where he's telling his Sinclair
story. The video is also on YouTube and can be watched here:
 http://youtu.be/P3CwIineYZ4

I hadn't seen that before - very interesting.
He was 84 in mid 2002, so he was about 94/95 when he died.
I too was videoed on that occasion.

The 5000 membranes he mentioned were the ones he and I shared.
They were though still only made of the original plastic, which became
 brittle.
The ones Rich had made I believe are made of superior clear plastic.
This type was fitted to early QLs, but was soon superseded, I suspect to
 save a few pennies.

Interested that fire in the Z88 factory. I am *sure* the stock was worth
only the few thousand Bill mentioned, so it has one wondering!

buying me a blank Eurocard and a SP0256 speech chip, and I went on to
interface it to the QL, producing, I believe, the first speech synthesizer

Anyways - I managed to pick up a second-hand one on eBay last week.
It showed up on my doorstep today and I'm now drowning in a wave of

all day, I feel like I've lost a close friend.

I never met him, but came close once. I now regret not leaning a little

However, I did meet the Woz, and he is a wonderful character - loving life

Just two guys who wanted to change the world a little, and ended up changing

 So which is better...Fggtt

He he...I suspect mine would work better on QDOS or SMSQ...theirs
better on the fruitier machines ;-)

Mine's been out so long it's high time I rewrote it and called it
something else anyway (QL-Launchpad???). Might sell a few more then!

Since there is proof of how long I used the name, I guess I can rely
on you to send them a kind email telling them they have 48 hours to
rename or remove every instance of their Launchpad worldwide ;-)

 (actually, I'd rather you didn't...)

Seriously though, it's a common name for a program or task launcher
anyway, I know of at least 2 freeware PC programs of that name. If
they really feel concerned about the use of my name on a hundred or so
1984 machines they are welcome to waste their money sending me a
polite email or letter and I will send them an equally nice email or
 letter saying OK...

You can guess I don't really care......

BTW, your video upscalar for QL, what is latest on that? You said
you'd sent them a QL to play with, that was the last I heard.

AND, glad to see you are getting committee emails at last! My moaning
email seems to have done the trick. Now what we need is prompting to
get the website finished so we can all login to the CMS and start
improving it. You chould check a CMS login has been set up for you. I
assume you know what a Content Management System is, in fact you most
probably have 10 times (at least) the experience of them I do.

 o)

 Dilwyn

In hindsight, that was probably an unwise jokey reply, but
light-heartedness apart (silly mood tonight for some reason) you get the
idea of how I feel about this - if Apple were to tell me to stop using the
name I would, as my Launchpad is quite an old product. I'd simply find a new
name. Although somehow I don't think Apple would be too worried by an old
program running on a 1984 computer.

The references to the Quanta website refer of course to the fact that Lee
is the new Editor of Quanta magazine. Sarah Gilpin is editing the issue
currently in preparation and hopefully Lee will be in a position to take
over from the following issue. I hope you'll all agree that his return to
the QL scene and his high level of activity and ideas will be a real benefit
to both Quanta and the QL scene in general.

There, hopefully I've embarrassed him enough for now ;-)

2009-09-07 Thread Darren Branagh
Hi All,

Yes - I'm still alive and still using a QL, when I can find the time.
Its been an eventful couple of years to say the least. With hyper
kids, and unemployment being a large feature :(

Myself and Steve Reyal (of QL DVD) are debating driving over from
London to Lucerne. So, any cheap hotel deals would be welcome. Both
Myself, and particularly Steve, are rather big Mac users as well, so
it has a dual interest for us both.

If we bring the car, we have several classic macs we can bring - A
SE30, Classic, Quadra, Plus, G3 Imac, G4 Tower, and my 17 Powerbook
and steves shiny new Intel Macbook (which runs windows Vista better
than my Compaq PC Laptop).

Not to mention the QL side of things.!!! We Still have an Amstrad
ALT286 with a QXL in it, and we will probably have copies of the QL
DVD (take a free look on youtube), Not to mention some hardware and
software.

Cheers,

Darren.

[Ql-Users] Irish QL Show

2007-10-10 Thread Darren Branagh - Kingfisher Club

Hi All,

Been thinking about this next Irish QL Alcoholics anonymous meeting
since Roy made the suggestion.

I know Roy said 5 or so will come, so who will and who won't? And any
ideas as to when - sooner rather than later? I can probably hold it in
the Hotel where I work and get a decent room rate.

Sometime in mid to late November? Any ideas?

Both in Low Res (for dial-up users, although some problems may persist -

Thanks to Steve Reyal who spent a lot of time transcoding it over the

Re: [Ql-Users] QL on YouTube

2007-08-17 Thread Darren Branagh - Kingfisher Club

Hi All,

I certainly don't have any problem uploading parts of the QL DVD to
YouTube, but it was Steve who did all the hard work - He bought a MiniDV
Camera (back when they weren't cheap - around £1000 at the time I think)
Did all the editing at his place of work (London Post Production, using
professional editing kit that would have cost a small fortune had we
been paying for it) and a LOT of his spare time DVD authoring, and using
a rostrum Camera to do the tilting QL shots for the Menus etc. All I had
to do was make a fool of myself presenting it (and a bigger fool of
myself in the outakes blooper reel!)

Needless to say we haven't sold any copies in a Looonn time...

I'll talk to Steve about it; Main problem would be cutting it to
managable chunks for viewing on YouTube (easy enough) and we'd also have
to scale down the image quality (it was in full DVD quality; a bit much
for YouTube unless you want to spend all day downloading it)

Actually, as a taster, I'll upload the promo trailer we did for it over
the weekend if I can. If is less than a meg when scaled down, and is
hilarious - Steve made it to resemble a 1940's pathe news cinema reel,
including filming in Black and white and adding lines and blurring to
the footage to make it look old - and as for the voice over - excellent.
Its about a minute or two long and would be well suited for YouTube.

Cheers,

Darren.

P.S. I'll still here - I really miss the QL Shows and meeting up with
the guys at them, but work and family matters make it very hard to do
anything anymore. Maybe its time to have another Irish QL Show Pi**-Up

Not SD (Secure Digital), CF (CompactFlash) it is (same as with your

them being the IDE protocol. So they can be attached to pretty much
any IDE controller by a simple adapter. Look on eBay for IDE

Simple Answer : no time.

Wife now working nights, and we have a 2 year old that has now been
diagnosed with Attention deficit disorder - basically, hes wild as a tiger
for 20 hours a day, and can get by with little or no sleep. Hence why I was
unable to get to QL21 myself.

I can still get them at very low prices - the smallest we do now though is
256Mb, with even 128Mb now end of life. At the top end we are doing 4Gb
ones!

I may look at it again soon, I did some work of collating data for the
stick, and some basic work on a front end. Maybe over the xmas break, but it
would be nice to have them before xmas...

Cheers,

Darren.

RE: [ql-users] QL Stick

2005-08-10 Thread Darren Branagh

Re: QL Stick..

It's a Windows problem and there's nothing you can do about it - as far as
I know - it seems to get confused when you move it between different PC's
and it just can't cope anymore.

I'd argue that comment. I think its more to do with the quality and
manufacture of your stick. The disgo brand (I work from 'em, so am probably
biased!) are guaranteed to work on any USB enabled environment - I have used
mine on linux, Apple Mac, and win 95,98,Me,XP home and Pro, 2000, NT4, and
various server editions and SBS's all within minutes of each other with no
problems - at consumer shows - and our returns rate is 0.02%, and most of
these are user errors rather than hardware errors.

Mind you, isn't that the point of a 'stick' anyway ?

Of course it is. Pointless having a portable device if only one machine can
use it!! The idea is you can access files on any machine with a USB port.

The quality of the USB sticks out there are very varied. Cost cutting in
this market is huge, so quality suffers as the illusion is they all do the
same job, so there is no difference. Talking to our resellers, the acer and
fujitsu ones are cronically bad for failing totally, not saving data
properly, or not working on certain systems.

Those manufactured by M-Systems (ie. Using their chipsets) are brilliant.
Disgo is one of these, and also bUSBi in the UK. There are a few issues
around the Disgo caps coming off, (now solved on the new models) but I've
only ever seen one that doesn't work.

On another note we've just launched the X-Key - a disgo with 256-bit data
encryption, and a safe environment application. You can use one of these in
an internet café, drag and drop stuff onto the café machines desktop, using
the PC as you would at home, and when you pull out the xkey, it
automatically deletes all traces that you were ever there. Amazing product,
but not cheap - about 5 times the price of an ordinary disgo.

We also do USB keys with fingerprint recognition on them.

END PLUG :-)

Cheers,

Darren.

A few years ago, Darren sent me something about the EU forcing a
standardisation of English spellings. After a few years of change, the
initial English text looked (to a non-German speaker) exactly like
written German but readable as English. Robert's example (to me
anyway) looks more like written Dutch.

Do you still have that one Darren?

For example, in Year 1 that useless letter c would be dropped to

Yep. Tooling costs the earth. And, with a lot of companies we work for, the
tooling plans are either sold to them, or destroyed, so that further ones
cant be made, should the company have wished a limited edition of whatever
device they commissioned.

I'm asked one of the guys in the know to look at the back catalogue to see
if we have a regtangular case there, but I doubt it. Even if we did, you'd
probably find the rights to it don't belong to us anymore, but to the
company that asked for it.

Exactly. The tooling cost of the real QL case was, I think, £30,000 in
the 80s.

(we did one in the shape and colour of a human finger last month - the
fingernail removed to show the USB connector - very classy!) I think the
print run for those was about 25,000 units, was for a US Telecoms company.
Mind you if there is tooling for a rectangular case, then that might be
cost effective. Isn't the tooling the really expensive bit?

Yes, you're missing something!! :-) We where talking of getting a mounded
case made in the shape of a QL. Could be done, but for 100 or so units,
would cost the earth.

The sticky label idea wouldn't work - they'd wear off in about 5 mins of
throwing them about, and the stick is not square, its tapered and slightly
rounded at the ends - a label would crease and look awful.

We can print directly onto the stick, the same way promotional pens and
keyrings are done, and it looks great. But it's a minimum order of 100.

Cheers,

Darren.

Am I missing something here, or could Darren just get some transparent
sticky labels (e.g. from Avery) and laser print a QL picture or
something onto them and wrap it around the body of the QL Stick?

think we should make all these unknown status programs available in a site

They note that abandonware is technically illegal but that the

It happens in PC land where the market money amd lawyers are so much
bigger
and agressive. Why then are the theoretical rights of absentee

a mega issue?
No one can be harmed when sources/modifications are released where
there is no market.
How about this - even in a PC 100% of zero is always zero.

This is one of the many things that bugs the hell out of me.

I wish there was a statute of limitations or similar on software,
 whereby
after x years the stuff became free. I'm sure freddy would agree to
releasing it as freeware, or certainly for a giveaway price. I mean,
what
real use is a piece of 10 year old QL Software other than
retro/curiosity
value? You're hardly gonna run the world with it...

There is so much good usable software out there and nobody knows its
user
status - is it freeware, charityware, commercial, or what? And if we
had
some certainty on a lot of this, a lot of users may be attracted
back or
stay with the QL to use them, purely as tinkerers.

I can pick up a copy of PC World, Computer Shopper, PC Pro or any
other PC
Magazine and find a pile of software (often once costing hundreds of
 pounds)
stuck to the front cover for the 4.99 cover price, and much of this
is
 less
than 2-3 years of age. You usually find v.3 or whatever on the cover
disc
with an offer to get the new v.4 inside at a reduced cost - yet here
we
 are
debating the status of software that hasn't been sold at all, never
mind
 updated, for over a decade.

Why are people so reluctant to give this stuff away? There is no
money in
 it
anymore. Just ask any trader :-)

 END RANT/

Don't forget Freddy V. may have sold the software, but that does not
mean he
is the copyright holder. I have said this many times before on this
list.
There are doubts about the copyright position of several of the
ancilliary
programs that formed part of the total Perfection package. When I
enquired
many years ago, no one was sure of the exact copyright status of
Spellchecker, for example. If my memory serves me correctly when Turbo
became PD permission had to be sought not just from Freddy V., but
also the
various authors,

Best Wishes,
Geoff

Dear Ffibys,

I must confess that I did not buy the Collection as such until now.

The situation is as follows.

Around 10 years ago, and for some years previous, I purchased many
individual titles of DP's programs. I guess I had around 30-40% of the
complete set, at a cost of several hundred pounds. By then, the PC was
slowly taking over, and the idea of buying the rest as a job lot in the form
of the Collection, on a limited budget, didn't appeal.

Subsequent to that, I purchased QPC2, and like you, using the virtual win_
disks, copied all my floppies and microdrives to a win_ file.
Unfortunately, in a moment of madness, I accidentally used WDEL_ and deleted
the wrong tree. By the time I realized, it was too late... Some of the
floppies, where there entire contents were copied, were thrown away, others
had deleted files (I still have these).

Since then, I have purchased, second hand, a copy of the DP collection
itself. Unfortunately, only 6 of the 10 disks were present, though the
remainder of DP's programs are on around 30 floppy disks as individual
titles. What I would like is a copy of the missing disks, numbers QL5, QL6,
QL7, and QL10.

In practice, I have all the titles, but not in the form I'd like (i.e. nice
and neat).

If you or anyone else could help me out, I'd be grateful.

I do understand the copyright issue, but in view of the foregoing, and the
10 year gap, and the practical realities of the programs being effectively
obsolete, I hope the request could be considered reasonably, rather than
creating a furore over rights and wrongs!

Regards,

Stuart
