[Ql-Users] Data exchange with MODBUS protocol via QPC2/Q-emuLator?

2023-09-11 Thread Davide Santachiara via Ql-Users
Hi All,

I have to exchange data (mainly read) from a PLC (with fixed IP address)
which uses the modbus protocol. Would it be possible to exchange data via
TCP/IP with this protocol using a QL emulator like QPC2 or Q-emuLator?

Thank you

Kind regards

Really nice and inspiring video, I am a little bit envious of your QL

But among many interesting things I saw QL-VGA card... Marcel, are you

I did almost not do anything QL related recently, but yesterday - after a

[Ql-Users] 16th Italian Sinclair QL meeting (virtual) - Report

2020-04-13 Thread Davide Santachiara via Ql-Users
16° Meeting Sinclair QL Italiano – 5th of April 2020

The 16° Sinclair QL should have been held in Modena as it has been the case
since 2008. Unfortunately, due to the restriction enforced following the
Covid-spread 19 we had to meet on the virtual teleconferencing platform
Jitsi. Twenty people have attended the teleconference including Marcel
Kilgus, Dilwyn Jones and Urs Keonig as welcome international guests.

Marcel, as also happened in the last two QL Italian meetings, had many
interesting news to report. Guest star was the new RGB-VGA interface for
Sinclair QL. This is yet another very useful piece of hardware to keep the
original QL alive at the time were only SVGA interfaces are available in
modern monitors. The prototype is almost finished and the image quality is
outstanding, everything is managed by a FPGA which scans the RGB signal and
transform it into a VGA signal. All the details can be found on

https://www.kilgus.net/2020/01/08/ql-vga-the-second/ An Italian QL user
living in Toronto since many years, Michele Perini, is designing a QL style
case to be realized with 3D print technology.

The second news was that the excellent QL-SD interface card will not be any
more realized due to the effort at Marcel’s side needed to solder and
integrate the boards. That’s a pity, but do not despair as a new replacement
named QL-SD ROM is already in the pipeline. This board will connect to the
QL ROM port. The nice plus is that the new QL-SD ROM will have an onboard
flash ram capable to keep up to 8 QL ROMs which can be loaded and selected
with simple SuperBasic commands.
https://www.kilgus.net/2020/03/28/ql-sd-rom-the-early-days/

As side activity Marcel is also working in the port of SMSQ/E for the MiSTer
platform. MiSTer is a hardware platform capable to emulate most of the
“retro-computers”. You can find the Sinclair QL port on

https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/QL_MiSTer while a MiSTer description is
given at this link
https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/Main_MiSTer/wiki

One of the possible future ideas which were mentioned by Marcel is the QL
port on the Spectrum Next
https://www.specnext.com/ which has been shown “live” by Massimo Boccardi,
one of the few guys who managed to buy one. One of the nice things about the
Spectrum Next is that the case has been designed by the same designer of the
Sinclair QL case.

Another nice video contribution was an original Sinclair QL connected to an
internet connection with this serial-ethernet interface

https://www.simulant.uk/shop/retro-vintage-computer-wifi-modem-rs232-serial-
hayes-compatible as well as V-Drive with a case made with SLS 3D printing
technology. The case was almost identical to the original Sinclair QL one.

Dilwyn Jones has shown his QL-IRC program. QL-IRC is written in structured
Super Basic (by Tim Swenson) and allows to any QL platform allowing to have
a TCP/IP connection like QPC2 to an IRC server (like e.g. the one hosted by
QLForum https://qlforum.co.uk/)

During Dilwyn’s presentation I noticed QL IRC was running on QPC 4.99 so I
could not resist to ask whether this was an error or a special version
developed on purpose for QL IRC. Actually, Marcel forgot that he almost
completed the work on QPC 5 which is a version almost completely re-written
in C a part for the core. There are many advantages vs QPC 4 like full
Direct-X 11 support, an improved floppy driver and capability to save header
information on DOS files. Only minor drawback is that it will not run
anymore on Windows 95.

Last presentation was made by Giorgio Garabello who has shown the latest
developments of his Black Phoenix platform
http://www.hunggartorino.it/ql/black-phoenix-en/ Most of the efforts have
been spent on a new sophisticated file manager called Quantum Explorer which
will be available in the next release. Roberto Porro in parallel has shown
the ongoing development work in the routines to allow image processing also
to be implemented in a new utility which will be part of Black Phoenix.

I hope I did not forget any of the very interesting information exchanged
during this virtual meeting, two hours and a half has flown and our wish has
been to organize a similar virtual event not far in the future. This was
however not new for us as since 2014 during our physical QL Italian meeting
we always organized videoconferencing sessions which allowed many people
from outside Italy to attend and present their projects. Obviously our hope
is that at least in 2021 there will be again a physical meeting where we
will manage to bring again our QL hardware and have together a lunch with
tigelle and Lambrusco.

It is remarkable that after 35 years from his launch and after 31 years
after the first Italian QL

could you explain a little bit more in practical details how you
configure/use the RSS reader (sw etc)? Because I admit I am not very used to
QL Forum and find a little bit awkward to navigate through it finding new
posts without loosing too much time. So I would be very curious to know a
little bit more about your RSS solution as that looks what could be the
right idea for me

I try to inform all 4 major venues (this list, the English forum, the
German forum and Facebook), which is a bit of a pain but they all have
distinct groups of users.

But while I do get the rejection of Facebook I encourage joining at
least the English forum, it is a very lively place (between 5 to 30
posts a day I would guess. If that is too much, the forum is split
into hardware/software/etc. so easy to filter for one's taste) and
unlike Facebook it is exclusively operated by QL enthusiasts.

I uses an RSS reader to read the forum, so I get to see new posts when
they arrive, just like in an eMail list, and can then decide to chime
in or not. This way reading it is very comfortable without having to
manually poll the site for changes, which in the past was my biggest
grievance with web forums.

Bad idea... I never ran my QXL from within Windoze, only DOS: memory
management
under DOS (and Windows) are bad enough as they are already. What you might
be
experiencing is a lack of sufficient "low mem" (that 640Kb first block of
addresses that the totally retard x86 16 bits CPUs can only address via one
64Kb segment at any given time and that all DOS executables must fit).

Since newer SMSQ/E executables are much larger, and since W98 is already
using the low memory in part, it is not a big surprise that it cannot work
under W98.

You *might* be successful if using DOS memory optimizers (such as QEMM)
before launching W98, depending on the amount of DOS drivers you load
on boot.

You don't "kill" SMSQ/E in the QXL, you kill (or rather exit) the DOS
process
that communicates with it, and this is done by hitting CTRL ScrollLock
under SMSQ/E. You can return back to SMSQ/E by relaunching the SMSQE.EXE
executable (i.e. SMSQ/E keeps running on the QXL even while you are doing
other stuff under DOS).

[Ql-Users] QXL 3.33, DOS and W98

2018-05-20 Thread Davide Santachiara via Ql-Users
Hi all QXL users :-)

After probably 18 years I decided to try my QXL with the latest SMSQ/E version.
I admit I was astonished when I saw my almost 20 years old multi-boot system
starting smoothly 1024x768 high res with SMSQ/E 3.33 for QXL. I think this is
quite impressive and I have to congratulate for maintaining a very high level
of compatibility along such a long period where in any case quite a number of
modifications have been introduced (as well as new hardware and software
platforms).

I have a couple of questions though:

# 1
While it seems with my old SMSQ 2.90 I managed to run SMSQ under the Windows 98
DOS (i.e. starting DOS inside W98, which allowed with ALT TAB to move to
Windows back and forth), with the last SMSQE.EXE version 3.33 I had to force to
run in as pure DOS program following a W98 reboot to have a proper QL boot.

# 2
Linked to #1 after instructing W98 to restart in DOS mode there is a drawback:
I did not find a way to kill SMSQE.EXE (like e.g. QPC_EXIT in QPC2 in Windows
mode of course). Hence the only way to restat the system is via a hw reset. But
W98 calls again the DOS mode launching SMSQE.EXE. The only way to restart the
system in W98 was to modify autoexec.bat and REM the lines calling SMSQE.EXE.
Has anybody a better solution?

Thanks and regards

Davide

Carlo presented his excellent Spectrum emulator. I still remember the 15

improve our emulators. Quite likely without Carlo emulator ZM/128, ZM/hT and

This unfortunately also reminds us how time has passed quickly and how

This weekend I came across the sad announcement that Dutch programmer Dr.
Ir. Carlo Delhez had died a week before. He was only 48.
He was a familiar name among Sinclair users. He wrote programs for ZX & QL
computers, both commercial and freeware. Among them Coral Basic - an
extension bringing SuperBASIC to the ZX81 - and ZX emulators for the QL and
PC. His Ungif tool has seen regular use on my systems.
He was not a club member nor a regular visitor at meetings but I remember
talking to him in Eindhoven briefly, about 20 years ago, a very nice person
and full of new ideas.

Our thoughts are with Carlo's family.

Oggetto: [Ql-Users] SBASIC / SuperBASIC Reference Manual - Online (HTML)

Thanks to some sterling work by tcat to further develop the automatic
conversion tool, the first version of the SBASIC/SuperBASIC Reference Manual
is now online
at:

http://www.rwapsoftware.co.uk/SBASIC_reference_manual_online/Foreword.html

JOBS to do - volunteers are required, as I will not have time for this -
it is now going to be a community project

If you don't come forward with changes, then they are unlikely to be done!

a) Write a home page to form the main link to the manual
b) Improve CSS and layout
c) Some more work on the conversion tool to handle the non-English
characters - especially needed for Appendix 8 and 9.
d) tcat to add the latest version conversion tool source to the forum for
comments / changes to be suggested and made - you might spot more ways in
which it can be improved to reduce the amount of manual effort needed.
e) Volunteers to take ownership of a specific page and hand edit it to
improve the layout - remove some of the line breaks for example in each
paragraph.

If you download a page to edit the HTML in a WYSIWYG editor, you will need
access to the CSS file:

http://www.rwapsoftware.co.uk/SBASIC_reference_manual_online/css/QLManualSty
le.css

If someone wants to set up some sort of online system where people can edit
pages (eg. a wiki ?) then let me know and I can send a zip with all of the
HTML files.

Hi Wolfang,

I think that possibility would be pretty nice, probably this can be done in
any case with virtual devices like pth (didn't try yet) but having this
possibility as native option could make things easier.

 Dear Wolfgang,

The utility allows to backup only from a device like win1_ to

Start time will be 10:30 - lunch break between 13:00-14:30 (tentative) then
afternoon session from 14:30 till 17:30.

There will be an international session via skype tele and videoconference in

Should you like either to present something or just to connect to the
international skype session please let me know privately and I will provide

Should you have anything which you would like to be advertised or shown

[Ql-Users] QL Meeting Italy Sunday 18th of May 2014

2014-05-06 Thread Davide Santachiara

Hi All,

I confirm on 18th of May will be held a new QL meeting in Italy. We already
had good feedback from Italian users and we hope to match the partecipation
of 2008 where we were roughly a dozen people.

We welcome QL experts either in hardware or software to partecipate at the
event with dedicated videoconferences. Dave Park kindly gave his
availability in presenting Sandy Eleectronics product range. Further
contributions would be highly welcomed. Please contact me offline if you are
interested.

Meeting place will be exactly the same in 2008 whose report can be still
downloaded from www.sinclairql.it (both Italian and English reports are
available) just to have a flavour of what happened and how it was organized.

Meeting will be held on 18th of May in Modena (northern Italy) which is very
conveniently located as it is exactly at the intersection of A22 (Brenner
motorway - 3 hours by car from the border with Austria) and A1 (Milano -
Roma motorway 1,5 hours by car). The location is DTM Technologies (the
company I work for) which is located less than 1 Km far from the Modena Nord
motorway exit. Closest train station is Modena or the new Mediopadana high
speed traing station in Reggio Emilia (20 Km far - 1h from/to Milano, 1h
from/to Florence, 2.5h from/to Rome). For directions and hints I would
suggest to go directly to this web link:

http://www.dtm.it/home.php?id=40201

Of course should there be people from abroad interested to spend a week-end
in the area they are more than welcome and I would be happy to help with
accomodations or other support. Modena is a nice town with the famous
Ghirlandina tower while the Ferrari premises and the Fiorano circuit are
15Km far (with museums both in Maranello and Modena close to the Maserati
premises). Reggio Emilia is also worth a quick visit, in this period is held
an interesting photograph event with many exhibitions:

[Ql-Users] QL Meeting Italy

2014-04-23 Thread Davide Santachiara
Hi All,

We are trying to organize a QL meeting in Italy on 18th of May (Sunday) very
similar to the last one held in 2008. You will find information and a report
on www.sinclairql.it - i.e. it will be something very informal with the main
goal to spend a day together and having a good lunch in a nearby trattoria.

However we would really appreciate if somebody from outside Italy would be
willing to join us by teleconference presenting his products or latest
software or hardware development. That could be easily (tbc) managed by
skype or other videoconference systems as we did in 2008 with Daniele from
the US.

The date is not yet fixed in stone as we are trying to reach a minimum
number of person to justify the effort but it appears likely so far. If
anybody is interested in joining us with a telecon for a presentation please
write me privately.

Thanks in advance

Hi all,

We are looking for someone with experience developing custom yet highly
compatible versions of Minerva. The revised version of Minerva may have
features like a very large amount of physical RAM, and exist on
system-writable flash memory. This provides an exciting opportunity for
Minerva to undergo active development on a new hardware platform, where it
can be updated using a software update system that needs to be safe, secure
and reliable.

We are also looking for anyone interested in working on development of an
ethernet driver. We're looking closely at the WizNet 5300. The datasheet is
here: http://www.wiznet.co.kr/UpLoad_Files/ReferenceFiles/W5300_DS_V128E.pdf
We would like the driver to be well integrated with Minerva. We would also
like to discuss the option of some BASIC extensions to make the new
interface as accessible as possible. ROM size no limit!

If anyone is interested and would like to know more, please contact me
privately by email. Compensation includes subsidized early access to
hardware.

If to be held in UK what about seeing if something could be done in
co-operation with The National Museum of Computing
http://www.tnmoc.org, perhaps at their place in Bletchley Park? One
advantage is that there would be plenty of other computing history,
aside from the QL, to attract visitors.

I've been meaning to make another visit to Bletchley Park for ages, so
a one-day QL event there would certainly coax me out of my armchair.

 Ian.

I hope I have not caused confusion. If there is an event it would be a UK
event.

My personal opinion is that there is no point in having a traditonal Quanta
show. They are burnt out and are of no interest to the members.
Last year's show at Manchester was the worst I have ever attended. Two days
with just two presentations both on the Sunday. Scarcely any mixing and
badly attended presentations. I had the impression that some people were
only there because they felt they had to be and just stayed at their tables
doing their own thing.

At the end of the show the committee had a tut tut session and asked how we
could approve attendance. They came up with a brilliant solution for this
year - a carbon copy of last year! And then Sarah grumbles why attendance
was bad and screams APATHY in the Quanta Magazine.
(Although she did spare us the capital letters this year.)

We have to break with this pattern. That's why I referred to shows abroad as
possible models. Let's stop having the obsession with numbers and instead
look at the quality of the event.

I don't know whether Bletchley Park would be financially feasible, but I
like the idea of combining some form of social activity with the business.
It would also get us back nearer to the South of England. No problem with
day travel for the commitee - Bletchley is on the West Coast Line which also
serves the small village of Manchester. The venue is 300 metres from the
station,

Best Wishes,

Geoff

2013-11-02 Thread Davide Santachiara
Dear Geoff,

Indeed the last QL event in Italy (2008) has been a rendez-vous between QL
enthusiasts (active and non active) which was held in the company for which
I work. That means the cost was zero besides for travels and a lunch event
which was of course also one of the reasons for the people to join again
from different parts of Italy.

I agree that even if the event was attended by a relatively low number of
people it has been very interesting and it was very nice to have the telecon
with Daniele Terdina in the US. Anybody interested could check the report at
this address:

http://www.sinclairql.it/meeting2008eng.pdf

It is not unlikely we will organize a similar event sometimes in Spring
2014.

So far discussion of a possible QLis30 event has been on whether or not such
an event should be held at all; whether it should be a two day or one day
event; and whether anyone will bother to attend.

The most important thing - the content of the event - has scarcely been
mentioned. In fact I believe that Dilwyn and I are the only people to have
made suggestions. If we can't do better than that we should forget the whole
business.

If we are expecting Quanta to finance an event then they have a right to
expect a detailed business plan rather than just a vague idea. There is no
point in having an event that will be nothing more than a Manchester show at
another location.

To concentrate our minds on the content of the event, I have devised this
little exercise. The scenario is deliberately very restrictive to avoid
unnecessary side issues. In practice I would expect the actual event to be
more flexible.

The QLis30 event will be a single day held in the function room of a hotel
between 10.00 and 16:00. There will be only the one room available the size
of which will be determined by the program of the day. Only three tables
will be permitted. One for Quanta, one for Dilwyn and one for Rich. Any
other person wanting a table would have to apply with a good motivation.

The first thing we have to decide is the target group of the event. This may
seem a strange concept, especially to UK QL-ers who only know one type of
show - a large hall with lots of tables and possibly presentations. However
if you look at shows worldwide there have been a wide variety of styles.

For example QL2004 was a day for the developers more than for the punters.

Recent continental shows have had a small, but enthusiastic, attendance and
have had an above average technical content.

The former North American shows also had a small, but enthusiastic,
attendance and always included lively social events outside the formal
sessions.

A few years ago there was a successful event in Italy attended, if I
remember correctly, by about 12 people. Several were no longer QL-ers and
the event was a form of reunion. It included a video presentation by Daniele
Terdina from America.

A small number of people attending is not necessarily a negative thing.
It depends on who the people are and whether they can produce something out
of the event that can benefit the QL community at large.

I have used a hotel function room because of access to catering. Do we, for
example, include catering as part of the day's events? A communal buffet
lunch or even a sit down lunch? A structured relaxation session in the bar?
(The bar at QLis21 was well patronised after the show dinner with some
Quanta members becoming Brahms! It buggered up the programme for the
following day.)

The content is open ended, but has to be entirely on the theme Qlis30 - that
is looking at the past or looking to the future. Thus a presentation on the
QLSD would be on topic but one on assembler off topic (sorry George!). I for
one would like to see some brainstorming over the future especially in a non
QL Today world and I suspect, shortly, a non Quanta world. We would have
about 6 hours to fill. You can do a lot in six hours.

I hope we can have a lively discussion on this list from which we can build
up the structure of a possible event to put to Quanta. (Or decide to do
privately? I would not rule that out.) I prefer an open discussion, but I
will understand if anyone would prefer to contact me privately.

I shall be just as happy with no feedback at all. No feedback is also
feedback!

Best Wishes,

Geoff

[Ql-Users] R: Sinclair QL running a qualification test for a spacecomponent

2012-11-23 Thread Davide Santachiara
Dear Francois,

We also work in the space business and it happened once or twice I relied on
the QL (actually it was QPC2) to solve on the spot some problems that could
have taken days of a software engineer. The problems were mainly related to
data conversion and not hardware related as in your case. Superbasic in this
respect is really powerful.

Oggetto: [Ql-Users] Sinclair QL running a qualification test for a
spacecomponent

Hi group, here is a short story for you this morning:

My trusty QL is controlling a test setup built to qualify a new component
for space use as we speak.

To make the story short, I work for a company that build satellite and other
space hardware. Two weeks ago, one of our design failed during an official
life test in the lab. We made some changes to the design and we are about to
restart the test soon.

But I found out that changing the material of the failed part for a
different type might be an even better solution. After talking to my boss,
he said that we have no time to qualify that new material before the
official test. His other objection was that a new test setup was needed to
mechanically bend the part made of the new material for many thousand cycles
before he would even consider it. There was no time, and no money. You need
to understand that a setup like that usually cost a few $1 and take
about a month to built, program the test computer etc.

The day after I told my boss: I WILL test this solution. Give me 24 hours to
built the test setup, and it will cost you nothing. I agreed with a smile.
24 hours later, the test was running.

I use scrap flight parts, a couple of brackets and a lot of Meccano parts.
For the actuator, I use a small $20 servo-motor that I had for a robotic
project of mine. I also had the controller for the servo. This controller
can be attached to a simple serial port. That is where the QL comes into
play. I needed a computer to control the amount of bending, the timing, the
large quantity of cycles and able to log everything. I also needed a
computer that was easy to program, as I started to work on the program at
23h00. Because the QL is the computer I know best, the program was finished
2 hours later.

The next day, when I installed everything in the thermal chamber, I must
admit that it looks a bit foolish. But it did work. I closed the door and
set the temperature to -50degC. Everybody knew it would not last through the
night. But this morning I opened the chamber and it was still running great,
25000 cycles later. When I left work it was at 4 cycles.

Anyway, It is fun to see my QL in a lab running this test, and I thought you
might like it. The other thing that I like is that I can work on my 3D game
at lunch time :-)

Have a nice day!

[Ql-Users] QL compatible Printers

2011-12-26 Thread Davide Santachiara
Hello everybody,

A friend of mine - Adelchi Moscardini, the oldest Italian QL active user -
who is using an Aurora SGC QL system has problems finding alternatives to
his two inkjet printers which recently broke. One is an Epson Styuls 740,
the other is a Canon BIC 250. While the Canon seems not repairable at all,
the Epson could be repaired but the price is in the range of 160 euro (!)

Are there any inkjet printers around which could be bought online still
compatible with commands like SDUMP or the Psion drivers?

Thanks for your help - I take the chance to wish you all a wonderful 2012.

[Ql-Users] R: Dead QL

2011-02-22 Thread Davide Santachiara
Dear François,

I doubt a dead SGC battery could be the origin of your problem. Try instead
removing the Qubide and see what happens, the further stop to be 100% sure
would be also to remove Aurora and reinstalling if needed the missing chips
on the QL motherboard to see whether the original QL is OK or not

On a QL of a friend of mine with similar setup I had quite a number of
similar problems due to Qubide.

Hi QL gang,

I fired up my QL this evening and it would stay on the F1/F2 screen, no
matter how hard I press the F1 and F2 keys...

My setup is:

Aurora board
SuperGoldCard
QUBIDE
Minerva MK1

As I said, it would not boot past the welcome screen. Not even the Minerva
timeout to the default F2 works. It would not boot to harddrive, or to
floppy.

This only thing that produce any change on the screen is the CTR,
ALT,SHIFT,TAB combination that makes the screen kind of redraw itself.

I suspect that the SGC battery is dead. Does a dead SGC battery makes the
system un-bootable ? What else can it be ?

Thanks in advance.

I guess no one enhanced Ed any further, as people moved onto using tools

such as Digital Precision's The Editor, or the even better QD editor
from Jochen Merz if they wanted to be able to do this sort of thing.

Yep, that's just about right. I find myself rarely using ed nowadays,
even for plain SBASIC programming. QD2 with its feature to remove and add

line numbers on the fly makes editing (and properly formatting) programs
 much easier.
I use ED only for small corrections/amendments when actually compiling.

I suppose the other thing to mention are the tools which were developed to
make writing SuperBASIC much easier even with just the basic ED command:

- QREF by Liberation Software which allows you to find all references to a
given command / string / function / procedure
- MasterBASIC by Ergon Development which analysed the program much more
than QREF - you could even search for tokens! and much more

Hi Rich,

MasterBASIC is good, which I re-discover when I remember to use it.

It would be nice to have an updated version of this at some time, too.

[Ql-Users] Epson EPL-6200 compatibility with QL

I regret that I can not answer your question fully. A few months ago I
bought one and am generally very pleased BUT I do not use it with a QL but
rather with QPC under Windows 7. It prints my PostScript via GhostScript and
is easily used with XChange (treat it as a laserjet). The real problem is
that the utility to switch between modes explicitly does not run under
Windows 7 but Windows ME and I have not been able to find a programmer's
manual for the 6200 (should anyone do so please let me know).
If, from QPC, I copy text directly to par1 it is printed (does this bypass
the W printer driver). At the moment, I cannot access a QL/Q60 to try it
out.

items). Thanks to Romaldo Parodi it seems we have found similar batteries
which in theory could be easily used to replace the original ones.

Does anyone has a schematic of GC and SGC in order to connect properly these
batteries to the SGC/GC battery socket?

Thank you

[Ql-Users] Problem with Qubide

2008-04-09 Thread Davide Santachiara
Hello everybody,

A friend of mine has a problem with his Qubide (PC cabinet with Aurora, Gold
Card and bus expander).

This is the third time in a couple of months that the drive is not
recognized anymore. I.e. the dots at QL boot do not appear at all. First
time I solved the problem just by unplugging / plugging all the cards and
cables. Second time this solution did not work 100% as the dots at boot
appeared but the name of the drive was shown with strange characters and the
drive was actually not recognized. I then removed/inserted the ICs of the
Qubide (I think the two GALs) and everything magically worked again.

Yesterday evening the problem appeared again. No Qubide dots at boot,
everything is stuck. Of course I will try the usual solution of
unplugging/plugging boards etc. However which could be in your opinion the
origin of the problem and which could be the definitive solution?

Thank you

Best regards

Davide

Dear Bill, (off topic)

A few days ago I bought a brand new Packard Bell PC from a local computer
shop. When I switched it on I just realized that it did not boot up. Before
spending hours with the support service I carefully checked that it was
possible to open it without loosing the warranty. I immediately discovered
that the HD power cable was disconnected.

I just think that those new SATA power cable are quite soft and it is
sufficient a bit of shaking to allow the cable to disconnect from the HD

Good old stiff PATA power cable

I would be grateful if you could send me the ZM/hT and also the ZM/128 doc

I have the full manual in Quill _doc format should anyone want me to email a

Davide - do you not have a full copy to upload to the website?

I agree with some of the comments below. Low cost hardware has indeed been
developed for the Spectrum, but it is hard to justify spending £30 on parts
and then selling fully made up and tested boards for £30-£35. It takes time
to solder, test and design the hardware. Plus firmware has to be written -
the DivIDE designer was lucky that someone designed FATware for it before
launch and did not want payment. However, now we come to design an improved
version (DivIDE Plus), this is where we hit the stumbling block - some of
the original firmware designers are not interested in going back to a 2-3
year old project and re-writing it to cope with improved hardware and all
the new facilities made available - they do not hav ethe time or cannot give
it freely, but yet are unwilling to charge for an upgraded version !

Designing hardware for the QL does not seem as easy as for the Spectrum for
some reason - possibly due to the difference in the bus and expansion port.
There are also a lot less people who can write firmware. I also think that
the Spectrum users have much lower expectations than QL users, especially
due to the memory paging system on the Spectrum - after all, we could sell a
4MB memory expansion card for the Spectrum, but programs have to page in 16K
(?) at a time and therefore you do not get bigger programs being written !!
There never were many programs written which utilised
the full 128K available on later models, so memory is not an issue.
However on the QL, programs are written which can fill all the available
memory, as they do not have to worry about how it pages in.

The QL has always had a wealth of public domain programs, but unfortunately
the user base (and thus the programmer base) has always been a lot smaller
than for the Speccy, so there is little incentive to write programs or
design new hardware.

A comment Davide made to me has suddenly hit home. Basically he was
pleased that someone was still having fun with his product after some
 10 years or more
but wait a minute, the spectrum
scene is still strong so why on earth isn't ZM/ht etc still
commercially available and being advertised on Auction sites like
 Ebay.
With full respect to Davide - he did truly good job with his emulator,
I do love it - I wouldn't probably buy it today. This time has gone. I
like his approach to provide it for free, which promotes himself
 better than low selling product.

I am from spectrum scene and I cannot believe what some people are
writing here. Have you ever think why on earth is the spectrum still
so strong? There are knowledged people willing to share for NO PROFIT.
This makes the spectrum scene stable, strong and up to date with HW and
SW.
IDE HDD interface called divIDE (similar to Qubide) is great example
of such activity : http://baze.au.com/divide/ Anyone can build it from
schematics, buy a DIY kit for 20EURO(!) or buy a complete interface
for 30EURO. For 30 EUROs (+/- price of the components) your ZX
Spectrum has much higher value and more features. Reward for these
authors is only success and feedback from users.

Similar trends to have open projects can be seen in Atari scene,
Commodore (look at Commodore One), MSX, CPC (look at try out SymbOS) etc.

In contrary what I see here on QL scene is still push to commerciality.
This doesn't attract newcomers, because unexpanded QL which you buy on
ebay with four Psion microdrives is nothing more than poor computer
with cool design and potential. Expanding QL is hard and expensive
or not possible due to lack of expension cards. At the top of it there
are no open source projects to change this status. Software on QL is
special category... So, where is the QL heading?

I don't want to be missinterpretted - it is nothing against you Neil,
but certainly I see here big difference in ZX Scene and QL Scene.
btw, as a side question. I have plenty of _Z80 images that ZM/hT
expects but i have even more .SNA's.
Is anyone aware of a .SNA to _Z80 convertors. Just for fun i renamed

2007-02-06 Thread Davide Santachiara
Hello Rich,

Thank you for your email. I do not have any information about divIDE HD i/f.
However the biggest problem would be 1) to find time to adapt ZM/Accessories
for SMSQ/E (it was originally compiled on Minerva) 2) to make the additional
programming to implement divIDE support. This is unfortunately quite
unlikely, it was already a miracle to be able to adapt ZeXcel for 65536

to help on this matter?

Hi Davide,

I trust that you are keeping well - this brings back some happy memories.
I guess the wheel has turned full circle, as I now support the Spectrum as
well as the QL !!

Of course the one thing now missing from the ZM/A Accessories and the other
emulators, is support for the divIDE hard disk interface and Compact Flash
Memory cards - we are just about to release a new version of divIDE for the
ZX Spectrum and I'd love to be able to test firmware for the divIDE on a
Spectrum emulator within a QL emulator ! Am I asking for trouble - no if I
wanted that, the QL emulator would have to be running inside a windows
emulator on Linux.

Hello everybody,

A couple of days ago my friend (80 years old) Adelchi Moscardini came to my

containing the name of around 5000 people which he has to sort in ascendent
order. However he discovered that:

de angelis

came after

degola

Which is not correct. So I made some tests and I discovered that the problem
seems due to a Minerva bug. In fact if you try

PRINT de angelisdegola

You get 0 on SMSQ/E (correct) and 1 on Minerva (1.97).

My question is whether there is a smart way to overcome this problem without
having to convert the program for SMSQ/E.

IBM h/w helpdesk. When the technician arrived the solution was to disassemble the HD,
quickly rotate it with his hand and then assemble again the HD into the case. That
worked very nice (!). The internal disk was stuck because of the non-operational
period and with the a strong rotation it was unlocked. However we are talking of old
and bulky SCSI hard disks.

Dear Jochen,

From information I have got from Gino when attending the 2003 Italian meeting he was
not using anymore email accounts (?). I only have his phone number and address.

Kind Regards

Davide
