Hello all

Sorry to hear about Frank and Carol, they are nice people. We had lots of
good conversations over the years and had a good working relationship. We
hope that they get well soon.

I have been lerking about, reading the list for some time. I bought out
all of Franks QL and Z88 stock, and have been making some sales of both. I
got most of what he had on hand. Some one else from Brazil or somewhere
like that got a few items.

I I intend to stay in the QL scene for a long time to come. (:))

[ql-users] Frank Davis - accident

2002-02-24 Thread Tony Firshman

Frank Davis [EMAIL PROTECTED] (past US QL Trader ) and wife Carol were
involved in a very serious car accident recently and have both just come
out of intensive care. A snippet from another email:
---
IN. She told me they were either going temporarily to a nursing home
(hard to stay long at regular hospitals these days) or would be going
home under home nursing care, meals on wheels, nurses aids, etc. Carol,
who never had high blood pressure has had it vary from over 235 over 197
to as low as 27 over 25, almost cardiac arrest. They are trying to get
it under control. Both are suffering from swollen and bruised kidneys,
liver and spleen and still in a lot of pain as they are being kept on
narcotics. Some cracked ribs and bruised chestbones so breathing is
shallow and painful. Makes me wonder why they did not keep them in
Intensive Care. They need assistance with walking , getting up, etc.
When they are home it is asked that calls be kept to a minimum or none
at all for awhile.
Their vehicle and its software contents are a total loss. they were
on
their way to an AGI Show in anderson when they were struck. His mother
said the accident report and over 13 witnesses all state it was totally
the other drivers fault. No info available on him. Last known to have a
ruptured spleen and massive inter-cranial bleeding. His head went right
through the roll bar on his viper as his body exited the Viper he was
speeding in. That was from a few days ago.

Yes indeed, but it was followed up by an email from his sister Linda.
She passed on a lot of info to all people in Frank's email address book.
Looks like they are both very lucky to be alive. The rogue driver has
since died I gather.

I spent part of a day up in Peru with Frank, Both are walking
SLOWLY and tenderly but are able to get around a little. But nothing
strenious at all. They do have some family up that way and they
are there every day as far as I know.

His mini-ven was totaled by the Insurance company, we recovered
the remaining material they had in the van. Lots of busted
up boxes, containers, merchandise. Even though they were hit in
the front, the stuff in the back plowed into the back seat hard
enough to put a perminate bow in the seat back.

They are about only able to worry about each other at this time.
They are being closely monitored. I too said they should have
remained in the hospital a little longer.

Needless to say, his business sideline is not getting very much
attention at this time.

I drive a minivan - a Dodge Grand Caravan. These minivans seat 7 with
ease, 9 at a pinch. I bought mine after being t-boned by an SUV while
driving an Olds - in the US, about half the vehicles on the road are SUVs,
trucks or minivans. I bought it because it was high up, so most of the
action would be below head height, and because it puts distance between
you and the accident - front and rear.

I don't know what kind of minivan they had, but it probably had something
to do with it.

A lot more dangerous out here than even in Greece (of all places) or France

My chosen subject: accident investigation.

That is a serious mis-statement of the statistics used by governments
world-wide to disuade people from driving larger vehicles.

Usually, the person killed is the driver of the lighter vehicle. SUVs and
minivans are involved in accidents where there is a higher risk of a
fatality, but that risk is biased towards the driver of the lighter
vehicle. You're far more likely to survive in a minivan.

Two vehicles hit each other head on. One weighs 1000 lbs and one weighs
2000 lbs. Assuming no energy absorption by the chassis...

The total velocity is 60mph, and the total weight is 3000 lbs. The 2000 lb
vehicle will slow from 30 mph to 10 mph. The 1000 lb vehicle will slow
from 30 mph to -10 mph. The relative acceleration for the 1000 lb vehicle
is twice that of the 2000 lb vehicle.

(Granted, this ignores differences in restraint systems, energy absorption
systems and etc)

I studied accident investigation - I wanted to be an air accident
investigator.

True, from a physics standpoint the collision favors the larger vehicle
from a standpoint of deforming...
However newer vehicles have controlled deforming zones. Don't also
underestimate inertia on a bigger vehicle (with a greater mass)...

As an on-topic note, I used my QL at Uni. I wrote several BASIC programs
for subjects like energy distribution, acceleration vectors, suspension
behaviour etc.

I had an Independent Studies course in College to get me just over the
number of credits to graduate. I was studying Cellular Automata and
concentrating on One-Dimensional. I wrote the main program that demo's the
CA on the QL using Metacomco Pascal. Since the Professor needed a demo, I
packed up my entire QL and took it off to the college, set it up and
demo'ed the program. Luckily he had no problems with me writing software
for a computer the college did not have. But, his computer graphics class
was still using an old kludged CP/M computer with some special graphics
hardware. For his office, he was using a Sun-2.

I found a bug with Metacomo Pascal and contacted the US office (here is
Silicon Valley). I sent them a microdrive with the source code. One of
the support guys thought there was a QL stored somewhere around the
facility and tried to find it. Never did hear back from them. About a
year later they closed the US office.

Interesting that you studied Aircraft accident investigation. My Air Force

equal number of takeoff and landings. We used to read a instructional book
called Road to Wings which detailed Class-A T-37 mishaps. Since most of
the photo's of the accidents showed charred planes, the students called the
book Road to Toast. I still have it along with some of my other T-37
