Zesty Cheese Ball
8 oz. Kraft New York extra-sharp cheddar cheese
8 oz. cream cheese
1/3 cup real mayonnaise
1 pkg. Good Seasons Zesty Italian dressing (dry)
almond slices, chopped

Chop up the cheddar cheese in small pieces and microwave for 1 minute. Add
chunked up cream cheese and microwave for 30 seconds more. Mix together, until
lumps are gone. You can microwave for a few seconds more to zap lumps. Add mayo
and dry dressing, and mix. Chill for 5 minutes, then form into a ball and roll
in chopped almond slices.

[RecipesAndMore] The warmest thoughts we ever send

2010-08-21 Thread steve doyle
The warmest thoughts we ever send
Are those that go from friend to friend.

The happiest wishes we ever make
Are the wishes made for friendship's sake.

The loveliest memories that we know were made
With good friends long ago.

The brightest tomorrows yet to be,
We'll find in friendship's company.

Subject: [RecipesAndMore] The Size of Your Heart

The Size of Your Heart

It isn't the size of your house as such
That matters so much at all.
It's the gentle hand and its loving touch,
That make it great or small.

The friends who come and the hour they
Who out of your house depart,
Will judge it not by the style you show,
But rather by the size of your heart.

It isn't the size of your head so much,
It isn't the wealth you found.
That will make you happy -- it's how you touch
The lives that are all around.

For making money is not hard --
To live life well is an art:
How people love you, how they regard,
Is all in the size of your heart.

[RecipesAndMore] Crockpot Smothered Chicken

2010-06-21 Thread steve doyle
Crockpot Smothered Chicken

Ingredients:
4 to 6 boneless chicken breast halves, without skin
12 ounces small portobello or crimini mushrooms, sliced
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 can French onion soup
1 large onion, sliced
vegetables, your choice, 2 cups sliced/diced

Preparation:
Cut chicken into bite size chunks and quickly brown in small amount of olive
oil.
Remove from pan, set aside and brown onion until almost soft.
Add mushrooms and sauté for another 5 minutes. Layer all vegetables in bottom
of crock, add some of the onions, then all of the chicken Top with rest of
onion.
Empty all three soups into saute pan. Stir thoroughly then pour over chicken.
Cover and cook on high for 2 hours, then on low for another 2-1/2 hours.
Serve over rice, noodles, vegetables, or your favorite.

Note: We steamed a head of cauliflower, cut it into wedges and topped it with
the chicken mixture. This eliminated the extra starch calories... different and
delicious.

Serves 4 to 6.

Thank Heaven

For all The little friendship things between just you and me.
For the closeness way down deep that comes

For the ordinary, everyday, just-called-to-say surprises,

For I care so much about you, and I'll be there till the end.
For God who blessed my life with such a special friend.

[RecipesAndMore] Tribute To A Best Friend

Tribute To A Best Friend

Sunlight streams through window pane
unto a spot on the floor
then I remember,
it's where you used to lie,
but now you are no more.
Our feet walk down a hall of carpet,
and muted echoes sound
then I remember,
It's where your paws would joyously abound.
A voice is heard along the road,
and up beyond the hill,
then I remember it can't be yours
your golden voice is still.
But I'll take that vacant spot of floor
and empty muted hall
and lay them with the absent voice

[RecipesAndMore] SMILE

2010-06-18 Thread steve doyle
SMILE

Today I smiled, and all at once
Things didn't look so bad.
Today I shared with someone else,
A little bit of hope I had.

Today I sang a little song,
And felt my heart grow light.
I walked a happy little mile,
With not a cloud in sight.

Today I worked with what I had,
And longed for nothing more,
And what had seemed like only weeds,
Were flowers at my door.

Today I loved a little more,
And complained a little less.
And in the giving of myself,
I forgot my weariness.

You're a friend for all seasons,

And I want you to know it is true

That my life has been richer,

[RecipesAndMore] Friendship is a priceless gift,

2010-06-14 Thread steve doyle
Friendship is a priceless gift,

That cannot be bought or sold.
But it's value is far greater,
Than a mountain of gold.

For gold is cold and lifeless.
It can neither see nor hear.
And in the time of trouble,
It is powerless to cheer.

It has no ears to listen.
No heart to understand.
It cannot bring you comfort.
Or reach out a helping hand.

So when you feel down and need a lift,
One of the best things to make amends,
Isn't diamonds, pearls or riches,
But the love of real true friends.

Steve, they don't have them in England? I love them, and just this week end,
I bought one fourth of a melon, well, they were on sale, so I got 2 pieces, and
cut them up and put the fruit in a plastic storage container; loads cheaper
than buying it already cut up! I cannot cut up a whole one; my hands are not
strong enough, I guess, to push through the big melon, but smaller pieces work
fine for me. guess I am just getting old! grin! good article.

It's Time For Watermelon!

Americans purchase and consume about 3 billion pounds of watermelon
annually.

Watermelon, considered one of America's favorite fruits, is really a
vegetable (Citrullus lanatus). Cousin to the cucumber and kin to the gourd,
watermelons can range in size from 7 to 100 pounds.

* Melons may be kept at room temperature, un-cut, for about two weeks.
Store whole melons at 50-60 degrees.

Cut melons should be wrapped and stored at 40-50 degrees.

If you need a small amount of watermelon, it is best to buy a piece of a
larger one. It may be more expensive per pound, but you will be more likely to
get good flavor.

To leave your home in heaven to guard a child like me!

Your beautiful and shining face I see not, though you're near,
The sweetness of your lovely voice, I cannot really hear.

A Panda was eating his meal in a Restaurant, as Pandas often do.

When the Waiter presented the bill, the Panda shot the Waiter and
Immediately left the building.

Naturally the Restaurant Owner was more than a little put out by this chain
Of events, so He went upstairs and looked up Panda's in his Encyclopaedia,
For the behaviour patterns of such a beast.

Sure enough, under Pandas, the definition reads:
Panda, eats,shoots and leaves.

[RecipesAndMore] What Cats Do For Us

2010-06-08 Thread steve doyle
What Cats Do For Us

Warm our laps.
Give us someone to talk to.
Help reduce high blood pressure.
Bring the winter air inside, nestled in their coats.
Create a kindred feeling with other cat people.
Turn common household objects like bottle caps into toys.
Make us more aware of birds.
Donate their services as alarm clocks.
Display daring acrobatic feats right in front of our eyes.
Contribute to living a longer life.
Make a window sill more beautiful.
Keep mice on the run.
Make us smile.
Inspire poets and playwrights.
Teach us how to land on our feet.
Let us indulge our desires to really spoil someone.
Make our homes warmer.
Remind us that life is mysterious.
Share with us the all-is-well experience of purring.
Instruct us in the luxurious art of stretching.
Show us how to lick our wounds and go on.
Give us cool cartoon characters.
Make even an old worn couch look beautiful.
Open our hearts.

[RecipesAndMore] UNFOLDING THE ROSEBUD

2010-06-07 Thread steve doyle
UNFOLDING THE ROSEBUD

A young, new preacher was walking with an older, more seasoned preacher in
the garden one day and feeling a bit insecure about what God had for him to
do, he was inquiring of the older preacher. The older preacher walked up to
a rosebush and handed the young preacher a rosebud and told him to open it
without tearing off any petals.

The young preacher looked in disbelief at the older preacher and was trying
to figure out what a rosebud could possibly have to do with his wanting to
know the WILL OF GOD for his life and for his ministry. Because of his high
respect for the older preacher, he proceeded to TRY to unfold the rose,
while keeping every petal in tact...It wasn't long before he realized how it
was impossible to do so.

Noticing the younger preacher's inability to unfold the rosebud while
keeping it in tact, the older preacher began to tell the following poem...

UNFOLDING THE ROSEBUD

It is only a tiny rosebud,

A flower of GOD's design;

But I cannot unfold the petals

With these clumsy hands of mine.

The secret of unfolding flowers

Is not known to such as I.

GOD opens this flower so sweetly,

When in my hands they fade and die.

If I cannot unfold a rosebud,

This flower of GOD's design,

Then how can I think I have wisdom

To unfold this life of mine?

So I'll trust in Him for His leading

Each moment of every day.

I will look to Him for His guidance

Each step of the pilgrim way.

The pathway that lies before me,

Only my heavenly Father knows.

I'll trust Him to unfold the moments,

Just as He unfolds the rose.

Coax Your Dog Into Sleeping In His Bed

To persuade your dog to sleep in his own pet bed, put a few pieces of your worn
clothing on his bed cushion. A dog is attracted to his owner's scent, which
thanks to your dirty laundry, will penetrate the bed's fibers, so everyone can
sleep soundly.

[RecipesAndMore] BEST FRIEND

2010-06-07 Thread steve doyle
BEST FRIEND

Last night you and your best friend had a fight. You decide not to talk to
her the next day.

She smiles at you. You grind your teeth at her.

She tells her friends nice things about you. You spread bad rumors about
her.

She tries to come and talk to you. But you push her aside.

She thinks you are a great friend. You think she is a terrible friend.

She writes nice notes to you, telling you about the best times you shared
together. You write about all the bad times you can remember experiencing
together.

Deep down you know she's sorry. But all you have is hate.

The next day you find a note. It reads:

   Dear -,

I tried to tell you yesterday, but you didn't let me speak,
I tried to tell you good things, but you were afraid to hear them.
I tried to smile at you, to take away the hate.
But now it's time to tell you, even though it's a bit late. That I am
dying.

I have a bad condition and it is getting worse. I'm sorry to have to tell
you that I won't be able to see you today. I wrote this to you today in the
hospital.
   My time is up.
I'm sorry I should have told you sooner. I'm really sorry about our
argument; you are such a great friend.
I promise I shall watch over you,

   Lots of love

   -

You run to the hospital to tell her you are sorry,

But only her mum is left.

Her hand clasped over her face.

And she was crying. Down on her knees she prays, for her daughter to come
back.

   You are too late.

You wish you told her sorry sooner and got to say goodbye.

All friends have their ups and downs, and sometimes you need to say
sorry... Don't wait for the other person to do it first.

Because you never know what could happen.

  Dr. Wild's

  Red Pepper Vinaigrette

  Tuesday June 01, 2010

A delicious recipe to help you eat and feel healthy - direct to you from Dr.
Weil's Optimum Health Plan.

  Red Pepper Vinaigrette

  8 Servings

This salad dressing is nothing like your basic vinaigrette formula - but
you'll soon want to use it nearly every day. The classic vinaigrette is made
with

3 parts oil to 1 part vinegar. As you can see, this version has no oil in it
at all, making it extremely low in calories. But don't worry - it's very high

in flavor. Once you've tried this I'm sure it'll become your basic everyday
staple for salad. And you can never eat too much salad!

  Ingredients:

  1/4 cup apple juice

  1/4 cup cider vinegar

  2 tablespoons chopped onion

  2 cloves garlic, chopped

  1/2 teaspoon dried whole oregano

  Pinches of rosemary and thyme

  1/2 teaspoon dry mustard powder

  1/2 teaspoon paprika

1/2 of a roasted red bell pepper

  Instructions:

Combine all ingredients in a blender container. Blend to mix thoroughly.

  Nutritional Information:

  Per serving:

Hugs from Heaven

When you feel a gentle breeze
Caress you when you sigh
It's a hug sent from Heaven

From a loved one way up high.

If a soft and tender raindrop
Lands upon your nose
They've added a small kiss
As fragile as a rose.

If a song you hear fills you
With a feeling of sweet love
It's a hug sent from Heaven

From someone special up above.

If you awaken in the morning
To a bluebird's chirping song
It's music sent from Heaven
To cheer you all day long.

If tiny little snowflakes
Land upon your face
It's a hug sent from Heaven
Trimmed with Angel lace.

So keep the joy in your heart
If you're lonely my dear friend
Hugs that are sent from Heaven
A broken heart will mend.

Hello to one and all!

It feels good to be welcome.

Sandy: I could have not said it better myself. A lifestyle change is
what works best indeed. I’m exploring all possibilities, however, as I
prefer to be well-versed at all times. It would appear that starting
the process of weight loss/maintenance with a program such as WW may
help at first to teach one commitment. I’m not sure how much of that
will apply to me but I’m open to finding out.

Steve: You made me smile. Thanks for the warm welcome. I will be sure

FOOD FUNNIES: How To Drive Restaurant Workers Insane

   9. When the waitress finishes taking your order, stop her before she
leaves your table and ask if you're supposed to drive around.

   8. Ask the manager to play Achy Breaky Heart. Complain loudly
in a French accent when they play it. Repeat.

   7. Order the cherries jubilee. When it's brought, flaming, to your
table, scream and try to put it out by throwing dinner rolls
  at it.

   6. At a buffet, take one piece of potato, one grape, etc. at a
time and give it a loud scolding before eating it.

   5. Each time the server leaves the table, everybody change
  positions.

   4. Throw your fork at the guy at the next table. Call the waiter
to say that you have dropped your fork. Repeat.

   3. When the waitress brings the sugar packets for your tea, demand
she bring out the whole box so you can choose your own.

   2. Demand to know why they can call your steak rare if just
  *anybody* can order one.

... and the #1 Way to Drive Restaurant Workers Insane ...

   1. Ask the waitress for a bottom for your bottomless cup of coffee.

[RecipesAndMore] See Success

2010-04-17 Thread steve doyle
See Success

Those who achieve success are those who can see success, and who act on what
they see. There is success in a cold, dreary day, for the person who can see
the need for overcoats and firewood, and then supply them to people who want to
stay warm.

There is success in the irate customer, for the person who can see the cause of
the problem and solve it. There is success in disaster, for the person who can
see the way to rebuild and to learn from past mistakes.

Success is everywhere for the making, if only you can see it. In every
situation is the seed for success. Successful people don't wait for the
situation to improve.

And they don't complain about it. They simply take action to improve the
situation.

Success, achievement and greatness come from the belief in, and the commitment
to, improving the world around you. When you set out looking for ways to make
the world a better place, what you find... is success.

[RecipesAndMore] Cowboy Pie Recipe

2010-04-16 Thread steve doyle
Cowboy Pie Recipe
A bit of a different recipe from some of our more traditional British dishes.
Try something western - and we don't mean Pembrokeshire or Cornwall!

Ingredients
500g Mince Beef
3 large leeks, chopped and washed
1 tin Baked Beans
3 tablespoons Tomato ketchup
1 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
Knob of butter

Topping
700g Potatoes peeled and chopped
Knob butter
150ml double cream

Preparation
Put the peeled and chopped potatoes on to boil.
Put knob of butter in a pan and add leeks cook until softened, add mince beef
and cook until mince is thoroughly cooked,

Add 3 tablespoons of tomato ketchup and 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce stir

[RecipesAndMore] Your Inner Angel

2010-04-14 Thread steve doyle
Your Inner Angel

I saw another angel recently. Sometimes it's hard to spot them because they
are so good at disguises. There was no white robe on this one. She was
wearing a faded, flowered, sundress not suited for the winter weather. Her
coat was well worn and probably older than my grownup son. She didn't have a
halo, but her white hair sparkled when the light hit it, and her smile shown
with joy. And there were no wings to be seen either. She walked slowly in
her scuffed-up shoes, while she pushed her shopping cart through the
supermarket.

I knew she was an angel, though, when, at the checkout, she divided her
groceries into three small piles. She apologized to me for doing so but
explained that she was buying food for two other elderly people, who
couldn't make it out in the bad weather. I just laughed and told her to take
her time. After all, it isn't every day that you get to see an angel in
action.

This ancient cherub squinted through her thick glasses and counted out the
last of her change to pay for the groceries. Then she picked up her full
bags and started to head out into the cold. She stopped for just a second,
though, at a collection bin for the local humane society and quietly dropped
in a bag of cat food and a bag of dog food.

As I watched her walk into the swirling snow, I smiled and wondered if she
was going to head for a car or fly up to heaven.

That elderly angel in disguise reminded me once again to look for the inner
angel in myself. She showed me one more time that doing good and spreading
joy can be as natural here on Earth as it is in heaven. She helped me see
that sharing God's love is not only easy to do, it is what we are meant to
do.

I hope you all take the time today to find the inner angel inside
yourselves. I hope you let that angel out to bless the world with your love.
And I hope you always remember that you don't need wings to fly.

Oranges
A small orange might not seem like a lot of fruit, but it's jampacked with
vitamin C, and not too high in carbohydrate. So it's a good choice as summer
starts to wane and you see more citrus fruit in the stores.

[RecipesAndMore] Easter Forever

2010-04-01 Thread steve doyle
Easter Forever

Imagine if Easter would last forever
You'd eat candy and chocolate everyday
And have Easter hunts, and be very clever
About where to hide your Easter prey

You'd be getting presents and toys
Eat millions of caramel 'n' cakes
You'd be filled with happiness and joy
When your parents start to bake

So Easter would rule forever
Pouring with billions of treats
Eat them like a beaver
And take care where you put your seat!

But after a while it gets boring and dull
The hiding, the finding, the partying and eating
So you'd get bored and so dreadfully full
That you'd look like a fat sheep bleating

So avoid the unpleasant
Be happy today
As in all 12 months in a year
There is only ONE Easter day

Another home remedy for toothache is in the use of clove, which reduces pain.
It also helps decrease infection due to its antiseptic properties. Clove oil,

[RecipesAndMore] You Don't Have To

2010-03-28 Thread steve doyle
You Don't Have To

You are free to walk away from the thoughts, habits and actions that have held
you back. You don't have to keep pulling yourself down. You don't have to.

The negative thoughts, the self-defeating things you do, may have become so
familiar that you think they're a part of you. They are not. You have the
strength to leave them behind.

You know well what helps you, and what hurts you. You know what brings growth
and fulfillment, and what is a waste of time. You know. And you don't have to
tolerate another moment of being any less than the best you can be.

You know what you need, and what you can do. Do what needs to be done, and stop
what needs to stop. Take control of each of your moments. Live your
possibilities in joy and earnest.

[RecipesAndMore] Preparing Meats For Cooking

Preparing Meats For Cooking

Leave a thin layer of fat on steaks and roasts during cooking to preserve
juiciness.

Trim fat after cooking. Pat steaks, cubes and pot roasts dry with paper
toweling for better browning. To make cutting into strips for stir-frying
easier, partially freeze beef to firm. Salt beef after cooking or browning;
salt draws out moisture and inhibits browning.

[RecipesAndMore] Baby Steps

Baby Steps

Fear

Imagine a fish afraid to swim?

A bird not able to fly?

A little 3 year old Hawaiian... afraid of the water. How can it be?

They should go together like blue and the sky. Like blue and the ocean. Yet
here she was scared to go near the ocean. I watched as her dad tried to coax
her in. Her sister had worse luck yet. Lifting her to her waist and trying to
carry her in to the waves. She screamed. Everyone, including me, looked to see
what in the world was happening to this little child.

There I sat in my comfy chair. Taking it all in. The cool breeze dancing across
the waves. The tropical trades gently kissing the palm trees. Their palms
waving in response.

The waves rolling in and slapping the sand. I was enjoying my day off in
paradise. That wonderful smell of salt vastness before me. I was relaxed.
Comfortable and enjoying my day... in paradise.

Until the scream rang out.

How could something so small be so loud?

Her sister set her down and joined her friend in the surf. Laughing. Playing
and enjoying the beach.

I watched. She just stood there. Afraid to move forward. Watching the other
kids playing in the ocean. Every time a wave would roll in, she would cower,
back away and run toward me. That would last a few seconds as the black sand
would burn her tiny little feet. She'd quickly run back toward the cool wet
sand seeking relief for her feet.

I caught a glimpse of her face. I've seen that look many times. In churches, at
work and in work in the scuba pool... Fear. The ugly monster. A fear breathing
dragon who knows no prejudice and preys upon everyone. It goes for the
emotional jugular of all it's victims. The glazed look in the victim's eyes...
gives it away. It feeds off of negative thoughts, fills your head with the I
can'ts, and makes your palms wet and clammy. Then sweat pours from your
forehead, a natural reaction that the body won't shake.

I placed my book down as I stood and walked toward her. Just then a wave came
in and she turned and ran in my direction. She looked up at me with those eyes.
Here on the islands the natives have these huge, beautiful brown eyes. Her's
were crying out for help. Filled with fear...

Come on Camry, I said to her as I walked past her. Come stand with me.

I walked to the cool wet sand, being careful to stand at the edge of where the
waves were stopping. I pointed down next to my feet. Stand right here, you'll
be safe.

She looked at me and then at my feet. I could see the doubt build in those
beautiful brown eyes.

It'll be ok. Stand right here, I said as I pointed down next to my feet.

She reluctantly walked slowly toward me. Another wave hit the shore but fell
short of our toes. I looked down and giggled. See, no problem. Not even
close, I said. She giggled.

Then the next wave rolled in and up onto the shore, still falling short of our
toes.

She didn't move, so I gave her the high five. Way to go Cam, you did great, I
said as I saw her confidence build and another fear hurdle collapse.

Being a scuba diver, I knew the next one would be the test. Waves roll in
groups of four. The next one would really test her courage. Ready? I
questioned her. Here it comes...

The next wave rolled in and over our toes. She grasped my leg and wrapped her
little arms tightly around my leg in a death grip as the water drained back
into the ocean.

Way to go!, I exclaimed, You did it!

I held my hand up... Give me 5, I said as I looked at her hand. She jumped
up, slapping my palm with her little fingers.

Her face lit up like the sunshine on our backs.

Daddy!, Daddy! I did it!, she cried out, Did you see me?

We stood there for the next few minutes. Her confidence building. Her smiles
growing.

I looked down and said, Are you ready? Lets take a step forward together, as
I took a step forward. All of a sudden it hit. That familiar look on her face.
Ugly fear was up to it's old tricks.

It's ok, I said. Come on, step up here next to me, stand right here.

She took a baby step forward toward my feet. Ok, here it comes, I said as I
heard the next wave crash against the shore. Camry stood there as the water
approached us.

The water hit my toes and I jumped, splashing her little legs. She giggled with
glee and jumped as well, splashing me back. Nothing like a game to distract
that old confidence eating monster. I was going to help her slay her dragon
with fun, laughter and a game. We stood there for another couple of minutes,
jumping, laughing and having a fun time on the shores of paradise.

After a few more minutes, once again it was time. Are you ready? Lets take
another step forward together as I once again took a step forward. It's ok,
come on, stand next to my toes.

That's when it hit me. Anyone can overcome their fear. All it takes is a little
knowledge and the help of a father. The father. He's always there with us. We
know it too. All day long, wherever we go, God goes with us, waiting for us to
take

[RecipesAndMore] In His Time

2010-03-14 Thread steve doyle
In His Time

I see God's goodness everyday,

In how He answers prayer.

We should never doubt His word,

Because He's always there.

He may not answer for weeks or months,

Or it just might be today.

We never know but the answer could come,

In the moment we pray!

Sometimes doubt will try to discourage,

Because answers have to wait.

We need to remember our time is not His,

He knows the destined fate.

Our prayers are not always answered,

In the way we might expect.

He may even answer prayers,

In ways we can't detect!

Oh! how I love my Father above,

And as I look around,

I see His sweet love and mercy,

That others through prayer have found.

I see broken hearts mend and,

Hope where there was none.

Smiles where there once were tears,

People healed one by one.

I thank our Father for answered prayer,

And praise His Holy name!

He never forsakes His children,

And always remains the same.

I pray my heart will be pure and sweet,

That worthy I'll always be,

To come into His presence,

And answered prayer I'll see.

[RecipesAndMore] Listening To Your Heart

2010-03-11 Thread steve doyle
Listening To Your Heart

I sometimes wish I had a road map for living. If only someone would
occasionally show me a way to go, a direction to take, it seems things could be
easier. Have you ever thought like that?

But it doesn't take me long to remember that others probably feel as confused
as I do.

Passengers on a regular flight from Detroit to Tri-City Airport (which is
situated between the Michigan cities of Saginaw, Bay City and Midland), must
have felt a little more than confused during a flight attendant's greeting.
Obviously not familiar with the area, she welcomed everyone warmly and stated
that the destination would be Midland.

A few concerned passengers alerted her to the mistake, so she quickly corrected
herself by saying they were headed to Tri-City and Bay City.

Chuckles rippled along the aisle as she bravely tried again. This time she
informed passengers that their destination was Saginaw. Now laughter broke out.

At that point, an authoritative voice came over the intercom and rescued her.
I'm your pilot, folks, he said, and don't worry - I know where we're going.

It's nice when someone knows the way. But does anyone know the way YOU should
be going? The way you should go in your life?

The truth is, we really can't depend on others for the most important answers
about living our lives. People can help, but nobody can truly decide what is
best for us; nobody else can steer us along that individual path that we should
take.

But the good news is this: we will eventually find the way ourselves. And I
believe we'll find it best by listening. Listening to our hearts; listening to
an inner voice.

I've learned that if I listen well, I will discover that the solution I need is
usually there, hiding within. It may be irritatingly well hidden, but it is
there nevertheless.

Perhaps you feel a bit lost. Most of us do at times. And if so, don't worry.
This may be a perfect time to listen. Listen to that quiet voice within. And
while you listen, remember this - your inner pilot knows where you're going.

[RecipesAndMore] Cute Dog Story

2010-03-08 Thread steve doyle
Cute Dog Story
An older, tired-looking dog wandered into my yard.
I could tell from his collar and well-fed belly that he had

a home and was well taken care of.

 He calmly came over to me, I gave him a few pats on his head;
he then followed me into my house, slowly walked down the
hall, curled up in the corner and fell asleep.

An hour later, he went to the door, and I let him out..

The next day he was back, greeted me in my yard,

walked inside and resumed his spot in the hall

and again slept for about an hour.

This continued off and on for several weeks.

Curious I pinned a note to his collar:

'I would like to find out who the owner of this wonderful sweet dog is

and ask if you are aware that almost every afternoon

your dog comes to my house for a nap.'

The next day he arrived for his nap, with a different note pinned to his
 collar:

'He lives in a home with 6 children, 2 under the age of 3 -

he's trying to catch up on his sleep.

Can I come with him tomorrow?'

After your morning coffee, remove the filter and grounds and set them aside
to dry. When the grounds are thoroughly dried, scatter them around the garden
as an organic plant food. Don’t use too much in one area because coffee grounds
tend to raise the acidity of the soil. Use the filter to line the bottom of
flowerpots to keep the soil from falling through the drainage holes.

Sore throat? Just mix 1/4 cup of vinegar with 1/4 cup of honey and take 1

Subject: [RecipesAndMore] The 99 Club

Once upon a time, there lived a King who, despite his luxurious
lifestyle, was neither happy nor content. One day, the King came upon
a servant who was singing happily while he worked. This fascinated the
King; why was he, the Supreme Ruler of the Land, unhappy and gloomy,
while a lowly servant had so much joy. The King asked the servant,
“Why are you so happy?”
The man replied, “Your Majesty, I am nothing but a servant, but my
family and I don’t need too much - just a roof over our heads and warm
food to fill our tummies.”
The king was not satisfied with that reply. Later in the day, he
sought the advice of his most trusted advisor. After hearing the
King’s woes and the servant’s story, the advisor said, “Your Majesty,
I believe that the servant has not been made part of The 99 Club.”
“The 99 Club? And what exactly is that?” the King inquired.
The advisor replied, “Your Majesty, to truly know what The 99 Club is,
place 99 Gold coins in a bag and leave it at this servant’s doorstep.”
When the servant saw the bag, he took it into his house. When he
opened the bag, he let out a great shout of joy... so many gold coins!
He began to count them. After several counts, he was at last convinced
that there were 99 coins. He wondered, “What could’ve happened to that
last gold coin? Surely, no one would leave 99 coins!” He looked
everywhere he could, but that final coin was elusive. Finally,
exhausted, he decided that he was going to have to work harder than
ever to earn that gold coin and complete his collection.

From that day, the servant’s life was changed. He was overworked,

horribly grumpy, and castigated his family for not helping him make
that 100th gold coin. He stopped singing while he worked. Witnessing
this drastic transformation, the King was puzzled. When he sought his
advisor’s help, the advisor said, “Your Majesty, the servant has now
officially joined The 99 Club.” He continued, “The 99 Club is a name
given to those people who have enough to be happy but are never
contented, because they’re always yearning and striving for that extra
1 telling themselves: “Let me get that one final thing and then I will
be happy for life.”
We can be happy, even with very little in our lives, but the minute
we're given something bigger and better, we want even more! We lose
our sleep, our happiness, we hurt the people around us; all these as a
price for our growing needs and desires. That’s what joining The 99
Club is all about.”

Have you joined the 99 club lately?

  Soggy Foods In The Microwave?

To keep foods from getting soggy in the microwave, cover them with paper
instead of plastic wrap. Because it doesn't cling, wax paper will allow more

[RecipesAndMore] My Walk With Sam

2010-02-19 Thread steve doyle
My Walk With Sam

I took Sam to the park today,

Thinking he'd have fun.

The paths there are cool and shady,

Not much walking in the sun.

We started out side by side and,

Walking along real good.

I wondered how long it would last,

Keeping up like he should.

You see Sam has become a lazy bonz,

Doesn't like to walk too long.

He'd much rather sit on a bench,

And see what comes along.

Half a mile down that shady path,

All of a sudden we stopped.

No budging or coaxing that boy,

On his tummy he flopped!

The people walking and jogging by,

Looked and gave a smile.

I really didn't think it funny,

I wanted to walk awhile.

When I turned and started back,

He willingly came along.

We were headed toward the playground,

Where he wanted all along!

You wouldn't believe the attention he stirred;

Showed off by chasing his tail!

He pranced around and made them laugh,

Until he met a dog named Abigale!

The children forgotten as she snuggled up;

This lady stole his heart.

Oh my goodness, how he did strut!

Then it was time to part.

He fell asleep when we got home,

I'm sure dreaming of the day.

And Doggy dreams of Abigale,

Together the two in play!

I sure do love my sweet Sam,

Doesn't matter lazy or not.

When he looks at me so adoringly,

Laziness is forgot!

Eliminate ear mites. All it takes is a few drops of WessonR Corn Oil in
your cat's ear. Massage it in, then clean with a cotton ball. Repeat
daily for 3 days. The oil soothes the cat's skin, smothers the mites,
and accelerates healing.

Kills fleas instantly. DawnR Dishwashing Liquid does the trick. Add a
few drops to your dog's bath and shampoo the animal thoroughly. Rinse
well to avoid skin irritations. Good-bye fleas.

Rainy day cure for dog odor: Next time your dog comes in from the rain,
simply wipe down the animal with BounceR or any dryer sheet, instantly
making your dog smell springtime fresh.

Did you know that drinking two glasses of GatoradeR can relieve headache
pain almost immediately-without the unpleasant side effects caused by
traditional pain relievers?

[RecipesAndMore] Love Is Like A Rose

Love Is Like A Rose

Love is like a beautiful rose. It needs time and space to grow.

It needs proper nourishment, and a gentle touch.

It starts out as a tiny seed and grows through time.

You need to treasure every bloom that appears.

Each bloom symbolizes a special event.

Happiness ... Joy

Laughter ... and even tears.

These events are what your love will become.

And just as the roots of the rose grow stronger

So does your love, forming a stronger bond with each passing year.

Love is a stable force.

Love is a need and a blessing.

[RecipesAndMore] On the Lighter Side...

On the Lighter Side...

Which Sermon?

A man who hadn't attended church in years
suddenly began attending faithfully on Sunday
mornings instead of going fishing as was his
normal habit. The pastor was highly gratified and
at the end of service one morning told him, How
wonderful it makes me feel to see you at services
with your good wife! Well, Preacher, said the
fisherman, Quite honestly, it's a matter of
choice. I'd much rather hear your sermon than hers.

The Difference

A salesman, tired of his job, gave it up to
become a policeman. Several months later, a
friend asked him how he liked his new role.
Well, he replied, the pay is good and the
hours aren't bad, but what I like best is that the customer is always wrong.

Thinking This Through...

I am full-figured, and when I dine in
restaurants, I often find the chairs too small
and uncomfortable. The last time I ate out I
filled in a comment card, saying that while the
food and service were wonderful, the chairs did
not accommodate anyone over a size 14. Several
weeks later I received a note of apology - and a coupon for a free dessert.

Amphibious Invasion

I had been teaching my seventh-graders about
World War II, and a test question was, What was
the largest amphibious assault of all time?
Expecting to see the D-Day invasion as the
answer, I found instead on one paper, Moses and the plague of frogs.

Teen Logic

Somewhat skeptical of his son's newfound
determination to become the next Charles Atlas,
the father nevertheless followed the teenager
over to the weight-lifting department. Please,
Dad, whined the boy, I promise I'll use them
every day. I don't know, Michael. It's really a
big commitment on your part, the father pointed
out. Please, Dad? They're not cheap either.
I'll use them Dad, I promise. You'll see.
Finally won over, the father paid for the
equipment and headed for the door. From the
corner of the store he heard his son yell,
What!? You mean I have to carry them to the car?!

[RecipesAndMore] First Things First

2010-02-11 Thread steve doyle
First Things First

Here are a few suggestions that will get you off to the right start on this
first day of the work week.

1. Do the least desirable things first.

You probably have a list of things to do today.

Some of these things you're looking forward to doing. Some of them you frankly
don't want to do. The first things you need to do are the things that you want
to do the least. The tendency is to put off the disagreeable things until the
very last minute.

Doing them first, however, has lots of advantages. You'll probably get through
them quicker, by doing them when you are fresh and haven't had time to get
bogged down in a lot of other things. You'll get them over with, and won't
waste time worrying about them all day. You'll be developing an important habit
of self-discipline, of going right ahead and doing what needs to be done, no
matter how unpleasant it is.

And when you do get around to the work that you really want to do, you'll be
able to put all your concentration into it, knowing smugly that all the
unpleasant, have to do's, for the day are behind you.

2. Confront your fears.

Do something today that you've been afraid to do. Is there someone you're
afraid to call? Is there some new skill you're afraid to try and tackle? Are
you afraid to balance your checkbook because you don't want to know how little
money you have? Whatever your fear, the only way you can overcome it is to meet
it head on. Do the thing you fear, and fear will have no control over you.

3. Be extra nice to someone you don't like.

Pretend that you like them, and treat them accordingly. You'll be surprised at
how much of your dislike for someone comes from your attitude toward them,
rather than their actual behavior. Yes, perhaps a long time ago they did
something that ticked you off. And ever since that time, you've been holding a
grudge. You now view everything they do in terms of that grudge. That is wasted
effort and energy on your part. Try liking someone and see what a difference it
makes in your overall attitude. It may even make them more likeable in the
process.

4. Do something a different way.

Take a different route to the office. Eat in a restaurant where you've never
eaten. Call someone you haven't spoken with for a long time. Get outside of
your comfort zone and challenge yourself to think in different ways. It is easy
to get into a rut, and to live our lives on auto-pilot. You can grow only
when you challenge yourself, and one of the best challenges is to put yourself
in a new situation.

Try these simple steps today and see for yourself how you feel at the end of
the day.

[RecipesAndMore] Poisoned Minds

2010-02-10 Thread steve doyle
Poisoned Minds

Tommy, an American Indian, was the new boy at school. My new school is awful!
he complained to his mother. The kids are so mean! They think we wear war
paint and feathers and say, Ugh! How! Me Big Chief Tommy Hawk.

Someone's teased you, I see, said Mom with a smile.

It's not funny, replied Tommy, almost in tears.

Mom was sympathetic. I'm sorry, honey. I do know what it's like, she assured
him. I'm an American Indian, too. I'm proud of my heritage, but no matter
where you live, there will be people with prejudices.

Prejudices, said Tommy. What's that?

Prejudices are opinions people form before the facts are known. It's like
their minds are poisoned with unfair and unreasonable dislikes for someone or
something.

People who are prejudiced often dislike those who are different from
themselves, Mom replied. Now... tell me about the kids in your class.

Well, mostly they're just regular kids, said Tommy. There's one girl,
though, who's different. Her name is Marta, and every day, a chauffeur in a
big, fancy car brings her to school and picks her up. She's a snob! She goes
around with her nose in the air. She doesn't seem to have any friends at
school, and it's no wonder!

You don't even know Marta, but you're judging her like others judged you,
scolded Mom.

But, Mom... began Tommy.

There are other prejudices besides racial ones, Mom said. Some people are
prejudiced against other religions or against disabled people. Some are
prejudiced against the rich or the poor. All kinds of prejudices are wrong,
they poison the mind of the person who has them.

Tommy knew his mother was right. Okay. I'll talk to Marta and try to be her
friend, he said slowly.

Good, approved Mom, and try not to be too sensitive when kids tease you.
After all, everyone is laughed at sometimes-for being too fat or too skinny or
red headed or freckle-faced or too smart. Mom smiled. Instead of getting all
upset over others' misunderstandings, learn to thank God for making us all
different, she added. Think how boring it would be if we were all alike!)

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Do you know someone who's prejudiced? How about yourself? You probably think
you're not, but do you tease or avoid someone who is different from you?
Someone of a different nationality? Someone who doesn't have the nicest clothes
or hair? Or someone who's too shy or too bold? Ask God to help you be friendly,
kind, and learn to appreciate everyone's differences. Decide to treat people
you think are different just the way you like to be treated yourself.

THE KEY: Don't be prejudiced

[RecipesAndMore] Keeping Cooked Pasta Warm

2010-02-10 Thread steve doyle
Keeping Cooked Pasta Warm

Quickly drain the pasta and let it stand in the colander just long enough to
drain. Transfer the drained pasta back to the cooking pan. The pan will be warm
enough to keep the pasta warm while you prepare the sauce. Warm the serving
dish before piling in the pasta: Fill the dish with hot water and let it stand
a few minutes. Pour out the water, dry the dish, add the pasta, and serve
immediately.

* Cooked pasta can also be stored in airtight containers in the refrigerator
for 3 to 5 days. If possible, store pasta and sauce separately. To reheat,
simply drop pasta in boiling water for a few seconds; drain.

[RecipesAndMore] Thanks For The Ride

2010-02-09 Thread steve doyle
Thanks For The Ride

It was mid-winter at the height of the Great Depression, and George and David
were making their way across the country, looking for work! Any work, anything
that would provide them with a few dollars to send home to their struggling,
starving families.

They did a lot of walking! A lot. It wasn't a very efficient way to get from
one place to another, but they didn't have a lot of options. They walked and
lived off the land (you'd be surprised the things you're willing to eat when
you're hungry enough) and the kindness of strangers. Occasionally they hitched
a ride with a kindly trucker driver. And once, they met a sympathetic train
conductor, who agreed to, you know, look the other way when they slipped into
an open cattle car.

It won't be much for comfort, the conductor told them, But it will get you
where you want to go faster than walking will.

Saying that the cattle car wasn't much for comfort was a little like saying the
stock market crash of 1929 didn't do much for the economy. For one thing, it
was a cattle car, which meant cattle, you know, residue, and plenty of it. You
couldn't step anywhere in the car without stepping on, or in, something
disgusting. Plus there was a ton of hay, which blew around the car like little
wind-driven spears as the train picked up steam. And then, there was the fact
that it was an open car, with icy wind, blasting them from every side. Smoke
and burning cinders from the engine also blew directly into the car, making
them cough and gag. Some cinders even started a fire in the hay, which might
have been disastrous for the train had George and David not been back there to
stamp it out.

Uncomfortable? Make that hellish. But the conductor was also right about the
speed of the train, which carried them several hundred miles across difficult
terrain.

In a matter of hours, they arrived in a large city where they were sure they
could find jobs, a journey that would have required weeks to complete on foot.

When the train finally came to a stop, the conductor hurried back to check on
his charges. I can't believe you made us stay back there! George said as he
mopped his cinder-pocked face with his handkerchief. There had to be a better
place for us on the train.

The conductor started to explain how it would have been impossible to have them
ride anyplace else without paying, but George held up a hand to stop him. I
don't want to hear it, he said. Thanks for nothing.

As George stormed off, David looked at the anguish on the conductor's face. He
tapped him on the shoulder, shook his hand and smiled. Never mind him, David
said. You've given us a great gift. We have a lot more time now to earn money
for our families. Thanks for the ride.

Life takes us on lots of different journeys during our time on this planet.
Some are slick, smooth, fast, and comfortable. Others are bumpy and rough, with
blowing hay and burning cinders, blasting us in the face, and cow residue
underfoot. Sometimes the journey is rough because of our own poor choices.
Sometimes our journey is adversely impacted by the poor choices of others. And
sometimes the journey is hard because, well, sometimes journeys are hard.
Earthquakes happen. Hurricanes happen. Cancer happens. Life happens.

As I watch people travel life's journeys, both easy and hard, it occurs to me
that it isn't so important what happens to us, since we'll all get our share of
both kinds of journeys. What's important, and what truly seems to make a
difference in our lives, is how we respond to what happens to us. Are we like
George, shaking a fist at the heavens and complaining about how hard and
painful life can be? Or are we like David, brushing off the cinders, shaking
out the hay and thanking God for the privilege of a ride?

It's an attitude, but it's more than just an attitude. It's an approach to
living that embraces life - fully and completely, residue and all.

Now this is the Living Bible:

His name is Bill.. He has wild hair, wears a T-shirt with holes in it,
jeans, and no shoes. This was literally his wardrobe for his entire four
years of college.

He is brilliant.. Kind of profound and very, very bright. He became a
Christian while attending college.

Across the street from the campus is a well-dressed, very conservative
church. They want to develop a ministry to the students but are not sure
how to go about it.

One day Bill decides to go there. He walks in with no shoes, jeans, his
T-shirt, and wild hair.. The service has already started and so Bill
starts down the aisle looking for a seat.

The church is completely packed and he can't find a seat. By now, people
are really looking a bit uncomfortable, but no one says anything.

Bill gets closer and closer and closer to the pulpit, and when he
realizes there are no seats, he just squats down right on the carpet.

By now the people are really uptight, and the tension in the air is
thick.

About this time, the minister realizes that from way at the back of the
church, a deacon is slowly making his way toward Bill.

Now the deacon is in his eighties, has silver-gray hair, and a
three-piece suit. A godly man, very elegant, very dignified, very
courtly. He walks with a cane and, as he starts walking toward this boy,
everyone is saying to themselves that you can't blame him for what he's
going to do.

How can you expect a man of his age and of his background to understand
some college kid on the floor?

It takes a long time for the man to reach the boy.

The church is utterly silent except for the clicking of the man's cane.
All eyes are focused on him.. You can't even hear anyone breathing. The
minister can't even preach the sermon until the deacon does what he has
to do.

And now they see this elderly man drop his cane on the floor. With great
difficulty, he lowers himself and sits down next to Bill and worships
with him so he won't be alone.

Everyone chokes up with emotion.

When the minister gains control, he says, 'What I'm about to preach,
you will never remember. What you have just seen, you will never
forget.'

'Be careful how you live. You may be the only Bible some people will
ever read!'

Food Trivia Quiz
1) You've seen them in stores - Sea Legs, imitation scallops, imitation
crab and imitation shrimp. What is the general name for these products,
what are they made from, who developed the process and when was the
process developed?

2) What do basil, marjoram, oregano, sage and rosemary have in common?

3) What dessert ingredient was inspired by a perfume for gloves?

4) What are the only two food preferences humans are supposedly born
with?

5) What are the top 3 'farmed' fish crops in the U.S.?

Answers

1) Surimi. Those seafood items that look like crab, scallops, etc. but
are really mostly white fish fillets, are thought of by most people as
some sort of modern high tech imitation product. They go by such names
as 'sea legs', imitation crab or imitation shrimp, etc. In reality, this
process was developed in Japan several hundred years ago when the
Japanese discovered that mincing fish flesh, washing it and then heating
it, caused a natural gelling of the flesh. If this was then mixed with
other ingredients and steamed, the resulting 'fish cake' (kamaboko)
stayed together as though it were a natural product.

2) They are all in the mint family.

3) Frangipane is a rich pastry cream flavored with ground almonds and
used to fill or top pastries and cakes. The name has a very unusual
origin. In the 16th century an Italian nobleman, Marquis Muzio
Frangipani, created a perfume for scenting gloves. It was popular in
Paris, and pastry cooks flavored pastry cream with almonds and called it
'frangipane', presumably to take advantage of the scents popularity.

4) Humans only have two basic food preferences that we are born with; a
liking for sweet foods, and a dislike for bitter foods. All other
preferences are learned, either culturally or by personal experience
which may cause us to associate certain tastes or foods with unpleasant
or pleasant moments. Medical disorders may also cause a craving or
revulsion for certain foods.

5)
Catfish is the largest 'crop', followed by crawfish and the third
largest 'crop' is rainbow trout.

Here is one of Chef Folse's heirloom recipes. These are excellent as
a base for a fish burger or as a patty. Great tasting in a brown,
  roux-based gravy.

  Boulettes de Poisson

1 pound new potatoes, peeled and diced

  1/2 cup minced onions

  1/2 cup minced celery

  1/4 cup minced garlic

  1/4 cup sliced green onions

  2 eggs

Salt and black pepper, to taste

  Cayenne pepper, to taste

  Granulated garlic, to taste

  1/2 cup vegetable oil, divided

  1 cup seasoned flour

In a 1-gallon saucepot, add 4 inches lightly salted water. Bring to a
rolling boil and reduce to a low simmer.

Add catfish and poach until fork tender but not falling apart. Drain
  and reserve liquid.

Return poaching liquid to a low boil, add potatoes and cook 12-15
minutes or until tender enough to mash. Drain potatoes then place in
  a large mixing bowl.

Add fish, onions, celery, minced garlic, green onions and eggs to
potatoes, then season to taste with salt, peppers and granulated
  garlic. Stir to mix well.

Form mixture into hamburger-sized patties. In a 10-inch skillet, heat
1/4 cup oil over medium-high heat. Dust patties with seasoned flour,
  shaking off excess.

Add patties to hot oil, 2-3 at a time, and fry 7-10 minutes or until
  golden brown, turning occasionally.

Using a spatula, remove and place on paper towels to drain. Continue
until all patties are cooked, adding more vegetable oil to skillet as
  needed. Serve warm.

Note: If desired, form the mixture into meatballs and deep fry or
cook in a brown or tomato gravy.

  Did you know - Pizza

  Americans eat billions of slices of pizza each year;
the annual per capita pizza consumption is 23 pounds.

Saturday night is the biggest night of the week for
eating pizza. Americans eat 90 acres of pizza per day.

During TV news broadcasts, most pizza is ordered during
the weather, and the delivery folks report that women are
  better tippers!

Post Columbus - Tomatoes were brought back to Europe
from the New World. Originally they were thought to be poisonous,
but later became accepted and added to pizza.

In the 16th century - Maria Carolina, the Queen of
Naples convinced her husband, King Ferdinand IV to allow the
peasant dish pizza to be made in the royal oven.

In 1889 Raffaele Esposito, the most famous PIZZAIOLO
(pizza chef) created a pie for Queen Margherita - tomato,
basil and cheese, (to resemble the Italian flag) which
remains the basis for American pizza.

In 1905, the first US Pizzeria opens in New York City
  at 53 1/2 Spring St.

On the Lighter Side...

Oh...

Patty began a job as an elementary school counselor and she was eager
to help. One day during recess she walked outside and noticed a girl
standing by herself on one side of a playing field while the rest of
the kids enjoyed a game of soccer at the other. Patty approached and
asked if she was all right. The girl said she was. A little while
later, however, Patty noticed the girl was in the same spot, still by
herself. Approaching again, Patty offered, Would you like me to be
your friend? The girl hesitated, then said, Okay, looking at the
woman suspiciously. Feeling she was making progress, Patty then
asked, Why are you standing here all alone? Because, the girl
said with great exasperation, I'm the goalie!

The Importance of Walking

Walking can add minutes to your life. This enables you at 95 years
old to spend an additional five months in a nursing home at $7000 per month.
My grandpa started walking five miles a day when he was 60. Now he's
97 years old and we don't know where he is.
I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.
I have to walk early in the morning, before my brain figures out what
I'm doing.
I joined a health club last year, spent about 400 bucks. Haven't lost

Every time I hear the dirty word 'exercise', I wash my mouth out with

The advantage of exercising every day is so when you die, they'll

If you are going to try cross-country skiing, start with a small country.
I know I got a lot of exercise the last few years, just getting over the hill.
We all get heavier as we get older, because there's a lot more

[RecipesAndMore] Great Goals Make You Stretch!

2010-01-16 Thread steve doyle
Great Goals Make You Stretch!

I met my alternate self three months shy of my 40th birthday as I struggled
with clinically-diagnosed depression. During this same period, I was
challenged, immensely by the debilitating effects of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
and being rendered permanently partially disabled as the result of being
involved in two car accidents in six days, neither of which was I at fault.

I recall an incredible sense of emptiness and a daunting feeling of being
completely overwhelmed; especially when trying to figure out which pills went
with what ills.

I was unable to return to the vocation I loved. That hurt more than my pain.
Most of my time was spent in bed where I eventually became 48 pounds over-fat.

When dreams and reasons for living are wiped out by the greatest, of the least
unexpected, most people's priorities typically change. My priorities? Well,
they just disappeared.

I was defeated physically, emotionally, psychologically, spiritually and
knocking on Financially's door. Making the bed was not a priority; it simply
went unmade.

And when it came down to paying the bills, many went unpaid.

One day I was moved enough to actually cultivate the emotion of being fed up!
During this awakening, I made the decision to reclaim complete responsibility
for my life.

And I did. 37 months post accident's, I went to work on my mind, body, and
spirit.

I studied, and applied everything that would enhance these areas. It wasn't
long before I was 51 pounds lighter, and at least 52 times brighter.

Following my awakening, I set goals to become an author, speaker, consultant,
and educator. I quickly established myself in each discipline and began to
promote and practice life-altering strategies. My approach was innovative,
strategic, fun, proven and desired-results focused. Paramount to enhancing my
personal energy level was to identify, outline and writing down my physical
goals.

Returning to playing competitive softball, being the team's starting short stop
and winning the league championship were my top three goals. I promised myself
I would return to play softball at a competitive level if it killed me. It
almost did! Playing softball on several teams simultaneously left me limping
around with a blue, pain-alleviating ointment. I had soreness in muscles I
never even knew existed! Nevertheless, by season's end, I had accomplished all
of my goals. I figured, if I could overcome all of my physical, spiritual and
psychological ailments, discovered how to run faster; jump higher; throw
farther; look younger, stay up longer, manifest twice as much energy than I did
when I was a starting NCAA athlete half my age, anyone else can do the
undoable, too! Whatever the undoable, may be.

As I continued following a disciplined program to attain goals in every area of
my life, something just short of magical happened. My personality sparked with
a resurgence of charisma, confidence and boldness. My muscles grew stronger, my
energy increased and the fat melted off my body. Taking part in an activity not
only became easier, but quite enjoyable. Suddenly, I was living life as I had
designed.

Great goals make you stretch. They absolutely can take you well beyond anything
you could possibly imagine! The most important part of setting great goals is
not the goals themselves, but the person you become in the stretch.

[RecipesAndMore] The Seed

2010-01-12 Thread steve doyle
The Seed

A successful businessman was growing old and knew it was time to choose a
successor to take over the business. Instead of choosing one of his Directors
or his children, he decided to do something different. He called all the young
executives in his company together.

He said, It is time for me to step down and choose the next CEO. I have
decided to choose one of you. The young executives were Shocked, but the boss
continued. I am going to give each one of you a SEED today - one very special
SEED. I want you to plant the seed, water it, and come back here one year
from today with what you have grown from the seed I have given you. I will then
judge the plants that you bring, and the one I choose will be the next
CEO.

One man, named Jim, was there that day and he, like the others, received a
seed. He went home and excitedly, told his wife the
story. She helped him get a pot, soil and compost and he planted the seed.
Everyday, he would water it and watch to see if it had
grown. After about three weeks, some of the other executives began to talk
about their seeds and the plants that were beginning to grow.

Jim kept checking his seed, but nothing ever grew. Three weeks, four weeks,
five weeks went by, still nothing. By now, others were talking about their
plants, but Jim didn't have a plant and he felt like a failure. Six months went
by -- still nothing in Jim's pot. He just knew he had killed his seed.
Everyone else had trees and tall plants, but he had nothing. Jim didn't say
anything to his colleagues, however.
He just kept watering and fertilizing the soil - He so wanted the seed to grow.

A year finally went by and all the young executives of the company brought
their plants to the CEO for inspection. Jim told his wife that he wasn't going
to take an empty pot. But she asked him to be honest about what happened. Jim
felt sick to his stomach, it was going to be the most embarrassing moment
of his life, but he knew his wife was right. He took his empty pot to the board
room. When Jim arrived, he was amazed at the variety of plants grown by
the other executives. They were beautiful -- in all shapes and sizes. Jim put
his empty pot on the floor and many of his colleagues laughed, a few felt
sorry for him!

When the CEO arrived, he surveyed the room and greeted his young executives.
Jim just tried to hide in the back. My, what great plants, trees, and flowers
you have grown, said the CEO. Today one of you will be appointed the next
CEO! Everybody in the Boardroom were excited.

All of a sudden, the CEO spotted Jim at the back of the room with his empty
pot. He ordered the Financial Director to bring him to the front. Jim was
terrified.
He thought, The CEO knows I'm a failure! Maybe he will have me fired!

When Jim got to the front, the CEO asked him what had happened to his seed -
Jim told him the story.

The CEO asked everyone to sit down except Jim. He looked at Jim, and then
announced to the young executives, Behold your next
Chief Executive Officer! His name is Jim! Jim couldn't believe it. Jim
couldn't even grow his seed. How could he be the new CEO? the others said.

Then the CEO said, One year ago today, I gave everyone in this room a seed. I
told you to take the seed, plant it, water it,
and bring it back to me today. But I gave you all boiled seeds; they were dead
- it was not possible for them to grow. All of you, except Jim, have brought
me trees and plants and flowers. When you found that the seed would not grow,
you substituted another seed for the one I gave you. Jim was the only one
with the courage and honesty to bring me a pot with my seed in it. Therefore,
he is the one who will be the new Chief Executive Officer!

* If you plant honesty, you will reap trust

* If you plant goodness, you will reap friends

* If you plant humility, you will reap greatness

* If you plant perseverance, you will reap contentment

* If you plant consideration, you will reap perspective

* If you plant hard work, you will reap success

* If you plant forgiveness, you will reap reconciliation

* If you plant faith in God, you will reap a harvest

So, be careful what you plant now;
it will determine what you will reap later..

Here are three thoughts to keep in mind when running in the race of life:

1. Look for hope in your present resources.

2. Surround yourself with friends and family who support you.

3. Seek guidance and assistance from others who can help you along your journey
to reach the finish line.

Be victorious and have your Nikes on!
