Am I understanding this...you are looking for an HO something from which to
build an S scale Civil War era 4-4-0? If so you might have better luck going up
a scale to O. Bachmann's On30 4-4-0 broke my heart because its prototype was
just to tiny to convert to S standard gauge, but if might work for a small
1860s-era loco. Also if you hold on to your old Dispatches, check page 19 of
the June 2003 issue. Paul Raham converted a Northwest Short Line On3 Spartan
series loco into a fine looking S standard gauge engine. He did say it was a
lot of work and I don't know how many if any of that loco are stall to be found.

Cheers
Jim.

Re: {S-Scale List} Hinged or solid points to throwbar

2013-10-06 Thread Jim Cheryl Martin
Jamie, Michael...I think the hinged vs soldered throwbar probably depends on
whether the point rails are hinged or solid, along with the rail size. My
turnouts are made with code 83 rail with solid point rails and soldered
throwbars. Code 83 rail doesn't put up a lot of resistance and the few solder
failures I've had at the throwbar have been because of bad soldering, not
stresses on the connection. Those who build with heavier rail (code 125 and up)
might be wise to hinge either or both ends of the points because of the
exponentially higher forces it takes to bend the rail. That's my take on things
for what it's worth.

BTW Michael, your track work techniques look first rate.

Hi guys.

I've head my head deep into other stuff lately so to catch up:

1. Kudos to Brooks and Mike for their loco building efforts. IMHO building
locos, especially scratch building, is the highest form of achievement in our
hobby.

2. I enjoyed the August promotional Dispatch. When we visited Scottsdale AZ
last year, Bill Winans (thanks Bill) took me around to see Nelson Steinmetz's
fine layout. I enjoyed Nelson's hospitality, and it's fun to see his layout in
that issue.

3. FNF...I've been spending Fridays and other nights making some scenery
upgrades to my home layout...particularly my Port Dover and Culverhouse modules
that have now been retired from the show circuit. I will be hosting some
S-scalers in a few week's time when I put on my annual CanAm Socia,l so I'd like
to get some more work accomplished before then. Rather than post any photos

{S-Scale List} Shapeways for modern (post 1980) freight equipment in S scale

2013-09-15 Thread Jim Cheryl Martin
Hi Guys.

Getting what one wants is one of the challenges and pleasures of this scale but
I feel for the modern modellers who are too few in number to create critical
mass for mass produced modern cars. This is supposed to be a builders scale, so
scratch building modern cars out of styrene, or making masters for flat cast
resin components may yield more results than waiting for a manufacturer to
produce it. Modern equipment at least has few rivets and weld lines can be had
from Archer decals.

Modellers in other scales, HO, N, Z and even T are designing their own motive
power and rolling stock for 3-D printing through Shapeways ( shapeways.com) in
the Netherlands. Just for fun I scrolled through their 73 pages of railroad
items and found the following: a 64-foot mechanical reefer; a whale belly tank
car; Trinity 53 foot gon; a mill gon, a NS high side gon; and a number of modern
hopper car designs. In motive power, someone has created a GP-38 body kit, a BQ
23-7 whatever that is, and a Fairmont speeder static model.

Other items that caught my interest, although not modern, are Fox trucks, a D-8
Caterpiller tractor, a Scenic Cruiser bus, Leslie rotary snowplough, and machine
shop tools. It's also worth looking in Shapeways' vehicles catalogue for such
things as late 40s IH trucks and 1:64 sprint cars.

Nearly all of what I've mentioned is listed in other scales, but the guy who
runs Shapeways has told us (S Scale Workshop) that anything listed can be
printed out in S scale. Worst case scenario you have to do some extra
detailing, and add ladders, brake gear, trucks, couplers, paint and decals, but
hey, it beats starting from scratch.

We ordered some double archbar truck frames in S from Shapeways and they're
quite presentable, although not too free rolling.

Just some thoughts that might be worth exploring. In fact I'm sure there are
some computer savvy guys on this list who could be capable of creating their own
files for cars that they want.

Cheers

Hi Gaylord

We had firsthand experience of your observations at Scranton a week ago (that
long already?) when we allowed a nine year old to run our S Scale Workshop
layout for a full two hours. He was too short to see the layout without a stool
so he'd crack the throttle, then jump off the stool and run ten or fifteen feet
down the layout and hop back on to resume throttle duties. He ran the train at
realistic speed and knew what switching maneuvers he wanted to make. Watching
him was a lot of fun. You may see his face in the next Dispatch. Of course it
would be impractical to allow one kid that much time at a public show, but it
does set one to thinking about how we can get the kids more involved, if only
for a short time. You never know how these experiences will imprint a young
mind.

I support Bob's suggestions. During the public show at this year's S Spree,
we had Lionel's TMCC system operating an SD-60 on one of our loops. The SMSG

came along we would offer him or her the opportunity to press the horn button,
which in this case also flashes the ditch lights.

The looks on the kids' faces is priceless when they see the effect of their
actions, and the parents are usually beaming too. We're giving them a chance
to be hands-on and interactive with the trains, and there's little likelihood
of damage (you can help them hold the controller if you think they might drop
 it).

Fun for everyone -- especially when we learned a neighboring layout's TMCC

{S-Scale List} FNF/John Prior [1 Attachment]

2013-08-17 Thread Jim Cheryl Martin
Hi Guys

It's been a busy week since Scranton. Great show Jamie!

First, John Prior of Swindon, England, who attended the Scranton convention,
followed that up with some railfanning in southern Ontario. At my invitation,
he dropped by for a visit last Tuesday afternoon and stayed for supper. The
photo shows him in the layout room where my Port Dover Module, which was part of
our S Scale Workshop display at Scrantion, is back on its L girders awaiting
re-installation. It was great to host John who possesses serious knowledge of
North American railroading.

It was also great fun to show our layout to an exclusively S scale crowd
instead of the usual public train show. For one thing, we didn't have to
explain the scale to anyone. Scranton was the last show my Port Dover and
Culverhouse modules will be travelling to. They are now being permanently
retired to my basement to anchor the home layout. Tasks ahead include detailing
the hand painted backdrop behind the layout, stripping out some redundant or
superfluous wiring, and repairing and upgrading some of the scenery which has
had a hard life the last half dozen years. Particularly the trees

Last night (FNF) I stood Culverhouse on its end and removed the grey Woodlands
Scenics ballast. It was never a favourite colour of mine but conformed with our
group specifications. I will now replace it with the pit run gravel ballast
that is more typical of southern Ontario branchline railroading.

I have committed to having my home layout on next year's NMRA, Niagara Frontier
Region Grapevine Express layout tour, so that should be the kick in the pants I
need to get moving on the rest of the layout.

One other bit of news: Jamie Bothwell has become the newest addition to the S
Scale Workshop and plans to build a module that he'll leave up here in Canada
for us to use on his behalf. He'll also try to attend the odd show with us.
Why Jamie wants to belong to any group that would have him as a member, is
something of a mystery, but we welcome him aboard just the same.

Cheers
Jim Matin

2013-08-14 Thread Jim Cheryl Martin
Hi boB

Same goes for transporting layouts. I trust the fates and the good of the
public. I don't swaddle my modules in plywood coffins, I just use end plates
to stack em and protect the ends of the rails. Over 2-dozen shows the only
damage I've ever incurred has been a few minor bumps and scrapes carrying them
up and down our narrow basement steps. My fault, not my wife who has better
spatial awareness. I did have some trees shake loose and the lock washers
actually spun off my switch machine toggles on that violent trailer ride to
Milwaukee a few years back, but that's it.

Getting back to the public and our stuff...at a show here in Canada a few years
back, a guy who was my age, in other words old enough to know better, was poking
my trees and structure details while showing off to his wife. I politely asked
him not to touch to which he replied while still poking away, But some things
HAVE to be touched. To which I replied NO THEY DON'T SIR! One does meet all
kinds in this hobby.

Oliver Clubine was displaying his exquisite farm scene corner module a few years
back. His etched brass Sheepscott Models farm windmill was placed a little too
close to the edge and left in trust of the Gods of Gravity. The gods failed
him. Someone passing by must have touched it or simply generated enough breeze
to send it to the floor. Along comes Jim with his little bottle of green paint,
touching up the fascia. I felt this strange squishey feeling under my left

{S-Scale List} Good vibes

The S scale list has been a positive reading experience of late...guys who
actually make stuff and share the experience with others.

Nice Mike, Mike! Your MoPac 1414 is a great looking piece of work. Well done.

Same with all the S layout articles that are popping in the major mags this
summer. I've seen Bob's in the July RMC, but will now have to run for the
current issues of RMC and MR to see Roger's work and that of the Jackson family.

I agree it would be nice to see Bob Werre's and Peter Vanvliet's layouts in
print some time. There are also some layouts in the Great White North worthy of
publication. Trevor Marshall's Port Rowan is setting a new standard for
construction. Paul Raham's big double-deck layout is classic construction that
is still very photogenic. John Johnston's layout has enough nicely finished
areas for a photo feature. Then there's Clayt Peter's Plum Creek. I'm sure
there are other guys who's work I haven't seen or that I've lost track of. All
of this with the possible exception of Trevor, is largely unknown work in the
U.S. As for me, I'm not yet ready for prime time, but I have agreed to host an
NMRA layout visit next summer, Hopefully that should be sufficient to light a
fire under my sandals.

Sorry, I don't have anything to add to the wheel standards discussion, but I
do have some recent modeling progress to share:

I have finally finished my GP-9 project for my fictitious Allegheny Western
Railway, and I have attached a few photos of the fleet.

GP-9 6625 is a passenger service engine, based on BO practice. I spliced
together two American Models fuel tanks and added NBW castings, to create the
larger fuel and water tanks found on this prototype. The larger tanks require
that the air reservoirs be placed on the roof. BTS parts were added for the
steam generator parts, the air reservoirs, a five-chime horn, and lift rings.
The ends include MU receptacles, drop steps, MU hoses and an air hose.

The paint scheme for my fictitious PLE-like railroad includes Extended
Century Gothic lettering, giving a NYC flavor (like the real PLE). But, in
my world, the Allegheny Western is a BO subsidiary, and so the paint scheme
includes BO Royal Blue and Dulux Gold lettering and striping.

I installed a Tsunami sound decoder, RailMaster speaker, and 1.5-volt bulbs
 for headlights.

GP-9 5821 is a freight service GP-9, with most of the same parts added.

I will send a separate message with a photo of the 6625 in commuter service.

The Allegheny Western Railway GP-9 fleet is now in full service.

Hi Lee.

Like you, the S Scale Workshop has some upgrades to make before Scranton. Andy
Malette, John Johnston, Pete Moffett and I will be getting together on Monday to
wire a second set of buss cables to our modules. These will be the primary
power cables and will be connected to our track buss cables via circuit breakers
for each module. The old track buss cables will remain unconnected at each
module interface. Thus if we have any electrical problems they should be
confined to just one module and not the whole setup. Springfield was a
rewarding show to attend but one of our most frustrating because of our
electrical problems. Most of them were our own fault, but like you guys we
agree that trailering modules in minus-20 degree weather is not the best way to
treat your stuff. We will have kinder weather in August and hopefully more
reliable operation.

Looking forward to seeing you guys again.

In spite of your agony, the finish on your RDCs looks great. Much more scale
in appearance than nickle plating or aluminum paint. Your techniques would lend
themselves to any other stainless steel equipment. Perhaps you should
contribute this to a major hobby mag.

The finish you describe appears similar to the liquid chrome with black under
base kit that automotive body supplier eastwood.com has available. I hope your
paints didn't cost you a hundred bucks! This finish also appears to be similar
to the marvelous livery the MacLaren Formula 1 cars wear. Their paint gives
their cars' bodies the appearance of having been machined from a metal billet.

Nice work Andrew and an excellent illustration of how talented and computer

BTW, if S- scalers think they’ve got it bad, consider the modellers in that
other “ideal scale” TT.
While you are hunting through the Shapeways site, check out the TT rolling stock
that Alex Hristov has designed. Also Proto87 modeller Rene Gourley. The S
Scale Workshop bought a batch of his double archbar truck frames in 1:64 a while
back and they’re pretty neat.

Rene had an excellent article on 3D print modelling in the March 2012 RMC. I
also interviewed him on Episode 35 of The Model Railway Show which can be

Re: {S-Scale List} New to the list

2013-04-26 Thread Jim Cheryl Martin
Hi Brady.

Welcome aboard! You must have thought we were ignoring you, but I suspect it's
simply light traffic on the list. I like your structures. Cardstock has come a
long way, and I myself am a big proponent of building papers. We are a scale
list, but welcome Flyer runners who are interested in the shift to scale.
That's the route taken by one of this scale's best ambassadors, Brooks Stover.
He started with Flyer and morphed to a scale layout that is barely barely
recognizable as hi-rail.. If you haven't visited his website, you owe it to
yourself to visit soon.

Brooks also builds great looking structures from paper and balsa.

2013-04-12 Thread Jim Cheryl Martin
Hi Geoff.

I don' t think you're off topic at all, not when we're talking Sn42. I've had
the good fortune to railfan and ride the NZ railway and I think the whole system
is way cool. I could easily tip into modelling NZ railways given half a chance.
My Canadian government was extremely short sighted in allowing the whole
Newfoundland system to get torn up. That island province is now a tourist hot
spot, and a narrow gauge tourist railway would now be a major asset. I guess
there's still enough stuff around if they wanted to dust off some old roadbeds,
but how much cheaper it would have been simply to leave some of it to wait for
the tourist dollars. We seem particularly adept at dropping the ball up here.

Forgive the off-topic post, but I thought some members may be interested in
this video, being a 3'6 gauge island railway network that managed to survive
the onslaught from the trucking industry in the 1980's. It could have so
easily gone the way of the Newfoundland network, but as of 2013 is doing quite
well. Not so much passenger-wise, but there's good freight growth.

remember they are still there inside their damaged bodies. A smiling face,
squeeze of the hand, or the blink of an eye to acknowledge you may be all
they can do, but it means a lot to most patients.

2) We all will join Tom. It is hard on those of us living our

of them if it were you. It is better to suffer some minor mental discomfort

last months and days up lifting and pass with peace.

Many of you have known Tom Boldt and are aware of his serious
condition! For those that don’t, Tom was a premier painter of brass
models some years back. His main interest was scale S and I became
aware of his illness, Lou Gehrig’s disease about five years ago. He
resides at a VA Home in Sandusky, Ohio, about thirty five miles from
my home. I had previously visited him about nine to twelve months ago
and left his bedside in a very depressed state. I have know Tom since
1985, when I first became interested in scale S. He painted my first
brass purchase, a NYC 19000 series caboose that I bought from Walt
Danylak, and many more items since. As a matter of fact, Walt
introduced me to Tom. We became good friends and shared an interest
in similar roads. Because of his interest in painting, he was very
knowledgeable of various road paint schemes!
In the nineties, Tom had a run of bad luck, holding jobs for only a
short duration for various reasons. At different times, he had been
employed by Omnicon and American Models after moving west from New
York. He also had family/marital problems that weighted heavily on
him! Tom began showing signs of stress and his health began
deteriorating, at my best recollection, about ten years ago. His
family was not sure if his condition was a result of painting so many
models, or his exposure to agent orange while serving his country in
Viet Nam during the 1960’s.
At any rate, my visit was not a pleasant experience, but I wanted to
find out if he was still with us. His condition is terminal and it
was very difficult standing near his side for the short period I
visited him. The nurse asked him if he recognized me and the only way
she could get and acknowledgement was to tell him to blink his eyes.
He was able to do that, but communication is impossible! I left the
VA more depressed than my previous visit and doubt I will return.
I can only tell you he is still among the living, but his condition
is ever diminishing. For those of you who knew Tom well, I would not
recommend you visit him, but please keep him in your prayers.

  Group,

Today I completed the installation of the S-CAB with battery power supply
system into my American Models FA-2 engine. I started Friday and worked on it
over the weekend as I had time. This is my second install of this system, so
it was a lot easier. I didn't have to figure out where all the wires needed to
go. Overall the installation went smoothly. I took my time (no deadlines). The
engine, of course, has a lot of space inside. However, I opted for the
custom-order two-battery solution for fear of the motor and gearing being too
much of a drain on the normal single-battery solution. I still need to do my
endurance test (to see how long this battery lasts), but so far so good.

The one BIG thing I noticed was that I have a completely different engine
now. This thing is smooth, quiet, and responds wonderfully. I previously had a
Digitrax decoder in it, so the only real significant difference is the pure-DC
battery power that the motor is driven by. I still need to play with the CVs
to set the overall speed curve. The S-CAB system has 28 speed steps, but I
could only max it out at speed step 15. It was super fast; too fast for my
 small layout.

Anyway, if you are interested in seeing the installation photos, I wrote an
article and just uploaded it to:
