{S-Scale List} List Cycles (was Silence!
Having been addicted to chatlists for going on fifteen years now, I am starting to think there is a life-cycle to most of them. Initially there is quite a bit of interest and energy invested and quite a lot of useful information. Eventually, over time, most of the major interests and concerns are addressed and they move into a sort of holding pattern with only occasional posts from experienced members or perhaps a new member who has not yet read the archives where likely his concern has already been discussed (perhaps at length). For myself, I find it increasingly easy to stop and ask myself before posting Is this message really necessary? More often than not, the answer is in the negative. Mostly I post only when I encounter something unfamiliar where I seek the experience and wisdom of the group. I think I posted a lot more several years ago when I first succumbed to the blandishments of S scale than I do now, not that I know everything about S scale, but that the gaps of knowledge are less frequent and less major. And for the occasional thread that continues ad nauseam, I try very hard not to contribute where there was usually not much light to begin with and increasing heat. And this is probably my last contribution to this particular thread. Jace Kahn General Manager Ceres Canisteo RR Co./Champlain County Traction Co. You're right boB. Re: {S-Scale List} Silence--not so! FNF for 9/27/13
Hi all -- I think some of it has to do with the more vocal of the group forming their own groups/SIG and having enough to do with just that. Also, the recent convention in Scranton probably took some more of the need to converse out of the picture, and NASG elections are over so that is not a factor. Speaking of the NASG, Bill Pyper, the new “Dispatch” editor, is looking for good Christmas season photos for the December issue. If you have some please send him at rrbil...@comcast.net .Also, bill is looking for feedback as to when you receive your October issue so he can more accurately gauge the time in transit from the printer. He has made the commitment to have all issues published and in members’ hands within the cover month date. The October issue is going out as I type...One more thing – I have been thinking about having the “Dispatch” done on the odd months rather than the even months as it is now.I think that would give the magazine a more timely relationship to the many events and seasons it covers. What do you think? As far as Bill Lane’s question about modeling and the FNF for this week, this week we had Pete and Linda Moffett as guests, so we ran trains rather than model. Otherwise, I have been digging up the front yard trying to discover where the root intrusion into the sewer line is located. No small task, as the line is over four feet down... I did order out a few more decals for the Coal Creek Central.I also did the usual solving of problems within the NASG (as well as I can, anyway). Have fun! Bill Winans -- boB Well you're correct in the quietness of this list. I haven't had any Yahoo changes but nearly every list is completely filled with this stuff. I will let the wider S community know about doings here in the Houston area. We have been invited to display our modules at four upcoming shows plus my Great Plains Northern Terminal Railroad will host visitors in late November as part of our yearly Fall Layout Tour --probably one of the largest in the country. The city of Galveston will be our first show next weekend. Their Museum was pretty much wiped out with Hurricane Ike. In fact I just learned that two passenger cars have been sold to scrappers--an ex ATSF business car and an ex Rock Island observation. I did extensive photo work on the ATSF car before the damage, BTW is was renamed the American Flyer by it's owners. It's a slow climb back to being a real museum. Anyway, this is the fourth time we've been involved in this show. It's also somewhat unique in that we setup outdoors under the overhang of the station. So we're protected from the rain but we've had issues with wind gusts. boB, you would like this because you can switch a yard without string or even an engine--just plan your gusts of wind carefully! Andre' and other guys operating the real stuff would like this also because they usually have a 1:1 GMC switcher moving boatloads of kids around the yard. The show after that is just a few miles away in Texas City where they have another museum devoted mostly to model railroads. That will happen in early November. In January, we'll be operating during the return of the World's Greatest Hobbies show. When that marketing program started, Houston was among the first cities to be visited. It's was a big event and we expect this one to be similar with 20,000 attending. We expect to have our biggest layout ever. In February we again expect to participate in a one day show called The Greater Houston Train Show which is an annual event that has been around before my time--and that's becoming a long time. It's a much smaller event but is similar to our own conventions with smaller vendors, contests, modules and clinics. So call us busy! You can check our club's website--Houston S Gaugers in case you are traveling in our neighborhood. Your invited! Bob Werre PhotoTraxx PS, and by the way were are DCC, handlaid code 100 rail and we use any coupler that works! -- The board's been pretty quiet, lately. Re: {S-Scale List} Monster Models 2 Story building
Well, I would love to your pic, Ken. But using either of my browsers, Yahoo/Neo is so screwed up that I can't click a New Photos link and view the new photos. (Firefox displays the Yahoo S Scale list home page as if I'm not a member, but I'm logged into Yahoo!) Thus, I would have to search the Photos folders one by one. What a pain. Now they are back in their place. http://pmrr.org/Equipment/FA2/index_LVL2_7.htm The NWSL motor replacement was a slight improvement, but in retrospect not worth the cost. Of course, I didn't know that ahead of time. I think, ultimately, at fault is the gearing in the AM gear tower (it has the low gear). At this point in time that is beyond my capabilities (I am not a mechanical engineer/machinist), so I will leave that issue for my future self to tackle. I do plan to pursue super-detailing the engines in the future (already have the B.T.S. parts). I found the S-CAB powered engine derailing on my tracklast night. I discovered that the headlight wiring touches the front truck gear tower, and prevents it from smoothly swiveling, so that, I presume, is the cause of the derailments. My second, now un-powered, A unit would derail as well, but for a different reason. Upon close inspection I found that the wheels toward the center ofthe engine floated just above the rail (i.e. the truck was not parallel withthe rail). Looking for the cause, I found that the mounting lug (towhich the truck is attached to the frame) wasn't perfectlystraight, so when the mounting nut is tightened, it pulled the whole truck out of alignment with respect to the track. Loosening that nut solved the alignment issue (i.e. all four wheels of the truck touched the rail), but re-introduced the wobbling of the frame/shell. My solution was to glue a piece of styrene to the underside of the frame where the truck gear tower just barely touches the frame when tightened, which forces the truck to sit at a slight (opposite) angle. It was just enough to cause the four wheels to once again touch the rails. And that solved the derailment problems with that engine. It was kind of fun testing that unpowered engine by having it be pulled by my NW2. In the prototype, the FA2 engines would break down often, so my guess is that there were times when they were indeed pulled by other engines. Today I plan on fixing the headlight wire issue mentioned above, and then doing a full charge on the engine's batteries. Then this weekend I hope to do my endurance test (running the engine, light, on my layout until the battery is drained). As Bob Werre mentioned earlier, next weekend we will be at the Galveston show, where I hope to run the AM FA2 (A-B-A set) with a full train and see how long its battery lasts on a powered layout (Digitrax DCC on our club layout). That's what I've been up to, as far as modeling is concerned. - Peter. On 09/27/2013 9:43 am, Bill Lane wrote: Posting about the list being it being quiet? (:-) Who is doing real S Scale modeling? As one of the first guys involved in the S Sig, I've also had problems returning to that fold. Chris has tried in vain to get things right, but the times I've tried have been fruitless so far. Andre, I think you have to be logged into the SIG's forum before you can see the last-updated date. The public, non-logged-in, page does show a December 2011 last-updated date. Re: {S-Scale List} Silence can be good at times
Hi Peter: Thanks for your article and information. The NWSL motor replacement was a slight improvement, but in retrospect not worth the cost. I have quite a bit experience in repowering, and it appears to me that the the motor used is too small for the heft of an S scale locomotive and components that engine will be carrying. I suspect it will need much more torque at lower RPM than can be produced by that small motor. For example: I recall using Mashima 18 x 33 flat cans in HO GP diesels with satisfactory performance when mated to improved Athearn 4 wheel truck assemblies. In contrast, a Sagami 1630 did NOT work as well using Athearn trucks on account of the 12:1 ratios (I think that was it) in the Athearn 4 axle truck assemblies. Again, not enough torque at slow RPM. I think, ultimately, at fault is the gearing in the AM gear tower (it has the low gear). It appears from the pictures that you have the later style power truck assemblies. My box-stock AM FA also has the later style truck assemblies, but it still doesn't quite approach the smoothness of all of my S-12's. As yet, I have not set about to determine why. My FA (as does yours) appears to use the same truck assembly as my S-12's, so logic would say that my FA can be made to run as good as my S-12's with some tinkering. My AM GP9's are a different matter. They use the earlier truck assemblies and they will need to be significantly improved before I will be satisfied with them. Have you disassembled your AM FA trucks to look for obvious issues? i.e. Cracked gears, tight mesh, binding worm, etc? Andre
Re: {S-Scale List} Silence can be good at times
boB, Over the years much of my work has been photographing cranes doing impressive things. A company call McDermet had a barge with a crane so large, we would have to use a G gauge model to come close to it. I've also been in traveling cranes in shipyards. They run on rails and are about 3-4 stories in the air, so they wiggle alot standing still and are crazy when moving. So any crane will do if it fits the job and has a cab that might fit an S figure. Thanks, Bob Bob: Mine was a Buy it Now from Ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/MODEL-POWER-HO-SCALE-TRAINS-WALKER-SON-SAND-GRAVEL-RAIL-CRANE-BUILDING-KIT-/370845617922?pt=Model_RR_Trainshash=item56581f0f02 It's small, but I mounted it on a raised base, and it don't look to bad boB

Re: {S-Scale List} Articles/photos of intermodal containers
Ed: You'll have to register but the following index site is a good tool: http://trc.trains.com/magazineindex/ Model Railroading ran a series called Containers A - Z that started in May 2000 and looks to have run into 2003. Rail Model Journal looks to have had a series also form sometime in late 2001 to 2003. Tom Hawley in Michigan is on the group and might be able to pin it down more, he's focused on the railroad scene today.. When I searched on intermodal containers in the Kalmbach index, I had 56 hits so you might have to narrow the search a bit. Not modeling at all these days, but hopefully I can still answer a few easy questions! Good luck with your search...
