Re: [RCSE] Common trim mode on JR 9303
John, Buy some new servos... that will be a start - Original Message - From: John Kappusmailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To: soaring@airage.commailto:soaring@airage.com Sent: Tuesday, July 22, 2008 2:19 PM Subject: [RCSE] Common trim mode on JR 9303 Common trim mode on 9303 ? I have a question on the 9303 regarding the common trim mode when using flight modes. In the device select, I set trim mode to common, but I see in the monitor screen that common only refers to rudder and aileron. All other trim controls stay in flight mode. Even with the trim mode on common, a trim change to elevator in cruise does NOT affect thermal or launch trim. Since my servos in my DLGs have some drift, it's not uncommon for me to change trim on the 1st flight. I want this change to go to everything (all Flight Modes). I can get elevator presets as changes to 'normal' trim by adding in mixes. I know I can make FM trim work by changing sub trim IF I notice the drift before the round, but true common trim might work better for this problem. What am I missing? Thanks, John

Re: [RCSE] The Stylus, Airtronics, Can't wait forever
I too had a RD8000 the 72mhz version I'm guessing the 2.4 version has the same software. And I agree with Mike it is a great radio for electrics and 2 to 4 channel sailplanes and handlaunch the RD8000 is light but has a inexpensive look to it, the RD8000 seems geared to power and heli's. RD8000 is lacking for F3X needs Like sliders, flight modes, 6 servo control, 3 position switches to name a few. I now have ONE radio that fly's all my toys and that's the way it should be. joe - Original Message - From: Mike Foxmailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Soaring@airage.commailto:Soaring@airage.com Sent: Wednesday, April 30, 2008 4:39 AM Subject: Re: [RCSE] The Stylus, Airtronics Hi Guys, From what I have heard from Airtronics also is, that the new 10 channel is being developed and hopefully out to the public in Feb. 09. Sanwa is using the same engineers that developed the Stylus. They also said there are plans to make a 2.4ghz module to fit the Stylus as it is still a good and popular radio. There is also talk about a higher end radio down the road, maybe 14 channel, good for our large Scale ships. I just got the Airtronics RDS8000 and flew it last weekend in a electric. Worked flawlessly! The RDS8000 does not have sliders for soaring, but it was not really intended to be that kind of radio. I think it is a excellent middle of the line radio. It has alot of mixing availible. I will fly my electric planes, heli and will try some sailplanes to figure out the 2.4 stuff. Re: [RCSE] Winter blues and USA F3J fundraising
It sucks that AMA does not allow more monies for ALL TEAM USA's to compete abroad representing our country. As Junior team manager for the 2000 effort in Greece there was NO AMA SUPPORT for the Juniors at that time and we were fortunate to raise enough $$ to cover all costs for the junior team and help the seniors. So I know how tough it is and it is tougher in today's economic climate. My idea to help is that ALL USA SOARING CLUBS holding contests increase there entry fee by $5 from now till JULY. This $5 will go to the F3J TEAM and should be a substantial amount, but we need to start NOW. Maybe the AMA will take note as they sit behind there castle walls in Muncie. maybe just maybe!! the AMA can afford to toss you a few logs for fire wood to keep you warm Rich. Well by now most of you guys have your new contest killer plane , and possibly have the radio installed already. Your probably looking on your shelves pulling out last years broken stuff and glueing that back together for back up. Here in beautiful Chicago , we almost broke an all time temperature change of the temperature going from 50 degrees to minus 4 this morning. I thought about going out to practice landings,,, umm, not really. So, Id like to go to the South West Classic and see your smiling faces but the upcoming year expenditures, plus pending plane purchases will probably allow me a spring flying contest being F3J in the Rockies in Denver Memorial weekend. The first time Ill see most of you soaring guys will be at the Toledo weak signals show in Ohio, April 4-5-6. Barry Kennedy has allowed Jeffery Walters and myself to be in his booth to sell raffle tickets and T shirts for the team. ( Thanks Barry). I thought making the US Team was hard but this fundraising thing is equal the challenge. We have 151 days left till leaving for the WC, and the team has a net need figured around $30,000. Another fundraising problem is our fundraising effort is cut a whole month shorter because the WC is a month earlier (late June). Thus, I have the winter blues thinking about it! I wish I could fly today to remind me what this soaring thing is all about! I think you know what I mean! That is why Soaring is so great, You can leave everything behind during a flight or two. I could only dream about being in Punta Gorda with you guys last weekend. So We the Team have to rely heavily on your generous contributions thru the Team website. I have come to be amazed at the cost of what it takes to send a team to a place as far as Turkey! usf3jteam.com If you have already contributed, thanks a million and good luck on the raffle! And feel free to drop me an email to let me know that you did , or email with any questions regarding preparing for flying in the WC. 2008 F3J , USA Team Richard Burnoski

Inside the USA most of our formats are the same since the late 70's while our models have evolved over the last 30+ years the contests have not. Our attendance is shrinking, we give in to a sandbagger, and we don't want to change anything to keep the pilots we have coming back. We don't push ourselves to try anything new and learn something. Sure the new guy has lots to learn starting from zero but after 6 months what is next? Guys soaring is not difficult. How many of us are significantly better pilots after the first 2 or 3 years? What have you learned the last 3 years? We quit flying if the conditions get a little rough. You can choose your issue all day long as why we get board or why attendance is shrinking. BTW, Each and every contest I have been to is a social event! That's the nature of humans. We tend to have fun when we can. Re: [RCSE] Contest Format
Tim, I see and understand where you are going, and respectfully disagree. I fly model sailplanes to compete and so a contest to me is a test of skills among peers. Like Golfing I work at every aspect of flying to improve my game in order to get that edge on the less skilled, the less prepared and the less knowledgeable. So for me when it all comes together for a win or high place, the taste of victory is sweet although brief is very addictive. This is what keeps me going I can fun fly anytime!! I look forward to a true contest of skills. To level the playing field and to reward players for not being prepared, less skilled or less practiced will give them a false sense of success. They will wonder why they got there A%$ handed to them when they attend a real contest, and who fault is that? smokinjoe

Unethical? ;-) I see it as maximizing my available flying time during a contest event, and playing by the rules of the contest attempting to maximize my score. Jim makes a valid point while at the same time highlighting one of the weaknesses of seeded MOM as currently practiced. The format creates a structure that encourages or even requires what would seem to some as unsportsmanlike behavior which belittles and demeans the unsuccessful competitor. The rules encourage exploiting any opportunity to bury someone who has a bad flight by putting on a show of being the only one flying for as long as possible while everyone stands and watches. This kind of structure is unnecessary and disproportionately rewards the single episode of good luck or heroic effort as opposed to consistent superior performance round after round. There can be no greater turn off in competition than being shafted or buried. While it may be fun for one guy, it is at the expense of everyone else. If playing by the rules makes the competition a turnoff to many, maybe better rules can correct this. This is an issue of the design of the contest format which my earlier idea seeks to address. By assigning scores that are limited on the low side, a competitor is not able to lose or win the whole contest in one round and there is no need nor opportunity to bury or shaft anybody. I think this is a better way to structure a contest if you want to insure all competitors have a good time and encourage participation while not artificially limiting the performance of any competitor. I guess a key objective I left out was: Respect for the dignity of all participants. I also think ...maximizing available flying time during a contest... is better done by increasing the pace of the event so more rounds can be flown. Designed by the intrepid Dr. Mark Drela, this new high aspect ratio F3J/Thermal Duration plane has a wing span of 150 (3.81 m) and a VERY slender 2.4 friendly pod and carbon boom. I have had the privilege of fondling the parts and pieces as the design was developed, and I can tell you that this plane is way-cool. The first prototypes of the Icon 2 are being tested as I type this, and the first production planes (mine - VBG) will be delivered just after the first of the year. I understand there's already a list. No - I don't have photos or drawings.and leave Don alone - he's busy working on my planes. Just get on the list. Whahooo... Steve Johnson

Re: [RCSE] Icon 2
This thread is going ?? ,, RCSE is about American TD pilots buying and using F3J F3X sailplanes flying American TD contests (3, 5, 7 tasks) and breaking American launch equipment. If they (RCSE Guys) want to maximize a American TD launch they should use a model designed for that task OR learn to launch a F3J model on American TD launch equipment. Contest organizers should not modify there equipment to accommodate Pilots, Pilots should modify there equipment and technique to maximize the contest organizers equipment and rules. If you break the line cause your pushing the limit's then suffer the consequence of your (Pilot) decision. Some guys can not see past there landing skag they will continue to search for the silver bullet instead of learning to launch, learning to land and learning to maximize there models. Man I need sell more 72mhz stuff smokinjoe

Re: [RCSE] Re: Supra or Onyx JW??
What I find interesting why is the Supra considered the bench mark ? who is the soaring lord who made this decree? The Supra is the most documented sailplane since it's release to the public, with it's many issues depending what serial number you have. I can not agree that fits a standard for bench mark status. j - Original Message - From: Gordysoarmailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To: soaring@airage.commailto:soaring@airage.com Sent: Sunday, November 18, 2007 12:03 PM Subject: [RCSE] Re: Supra or Onyx JW?? -I went with the Onyx Jw because I thought it performed about like a Supra - Jack What I find interesting is that the Supra is considered the 'bench mark' and then there are the others...cheaper, but with some feature that makes them...better? worth more? almost as good for the cost? There are a lot of reasons to chose something other than the ships that are most proven and popluar, cost being one but in fact the cost is a few lawn mowings or driveway shovelings extra cash away from each other. The number one reason to get something other than the 'bench mark' ship? Because you want to try something else...it makes the hobby that much more fun for you. Second best reason...because IF you enter a contest flying the same ship as the majorityyou are left with one less excuse for not having done as well as they all did. Flying the same design as the group can make Man On Man more about the pilot. Maybe takes a little more guts :-) Third Reason...because you still believe that a certain model's foil or weight or span offers some advantage that will tip the time or landing points your way over the other poor saps stuck with that that 'bench mark' sailplane. We had school kids paid to tow, and they were weak, giving me launches 30m less altitude I had wing connector problem on one launch disconnecting the aileron and that caused a double pop offzero. On another flight I was skied out another pilot came overand wemid airedhard, I got it down but it hit a fence pole and destroyed the wing. Today I did a test launch to get the new kids towing some experience. When I dove to get off the line they stopped towing and I over rotated some, the line wrapped around my vertical and sawed it off right at the stab pivot, and both popped off, and destroyed the entire plane. Tower cost $200 for the weekend, motel and rental car expense approx $800, two Pikes approx $1,100 and the flight out $450. F3J in the Rockies cost me pretty close to $4,000. Figure I got 4 actual flights in counting the practice flight...you do the math, I'm gonna be a little sick :-)Star Wars was great the other day though! Gordy

My new Shadow 3 was put in my beater ICON and range tested. It showed slightlybetter range than the hitec superslim that was in it before. All directionswere good so I launched and specked it out and no problems were observed. My buddy Mike Verzuh came along and slammed his 57 module in and we were goingto see how in handled interference. We were very impressed. As long as I wasa few feet closer to the model, I had full control, as we got next to eachother the receiver would kick into failsafe.I set the failsafe to 3/4 landing mode (flaps and elevator comp) and some leftrudder. I got some altitude and turned off the transmitter. There were noglitches or wierdness - it simply put the flaps down and started a slowcircling descent. I let it run for about 30 seconds, then turned back on andcontrol was instantly back. All in all very impressive for a PPM receiver.JimRCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] Cargo
Bill, been there done that and the Twin star fly's great. I had a crashed one and ordered another just cut out the nacelles and install on new wing with enough room for the prop to swing, wire motors in series, spackle and paint took about an hour and a half to complete the project. You will need about a 40amp speed controller for the extra juice Ah!! the sound of 4 motors. I recommend a flight pack for the receiver as mine met a awful end at the Phoenix contest two years ago it brings a tear to my eyes when I think about, the quad star tows hand launches with out breaking a sweat. It was a great, fun and easy project just call up Karlton for a wing kit and you to can have a quad star. ... I had a photo Karlton may still have it. joe -Original Message- From: Bill Swingle [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, May 30, 2001 1:58 PM To: RCSE Soaring Subject: Re: [RCSE] Cargo Okay, looking at the Cargo gives me an idea. RE: [RCSE] piezo gyros
I am very familiar with the Wingo Gyro it is the size of a servo and of high quality, on the Stylist it is setup to be turned on and off via switch also I am able to adjust the gain during flight. As a contest pilot I am always looking for an edge so experimenting with the gyro was a natural. The gyro is just another tool and if not used properly will yield poor results. I have seen not so skilled pilots use the gyro and noticed no increase in flight or contest performance as mentioned earlier it will not fly or core thermals for you. Where I have seen the payoff for me is it's ability to smooth out your turns at great distance on the edge where you are guessing part of the time what your plane is doing and in landing. You make you base turn your locked on the spot any side gusts the gyro will begin to correct and so your aileron input is minimal but you still have to land your ship. Will I use one in 2001 contest season? the jury is still out. I am still getting flying time in on the Artimus super light (57oz) running MCV2's this is a sweet heart but not for everyone, for a molded ship it is made with enough martial to do the job. This bleeding edge ship will dent if you stair too long but will take a full pedal launch with the best of them. See Tom at F3X.com for info but this version is very very limited... joe -Original Message- From: Gary Retterbush [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Sunday, January 21, 2001 2:07 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [RCSE] piezo gyros I've used a "Wingo" dual output (aileron) gyro on a couple of my hot electrics and find it to be exactly as advertised (good). The set up I have allows switching it on and off in flight as well as adjusting the sensitivity. Good, fast servos are a must for a gyro of this type to do its job correctly. Most of the scale jet turbine guys over here are using them on the nose gear steering and they make take off much easier. And what would choppers be today without them? Remember, these are not autopilots as most people think of them. They just like to hold the last position. Gary RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. For example "FLASH5, Hitec 555 w/HS-60's, brand x field charger, and a Highlander" etc... Obviously, durability and low cost are priorities. RE: [RCSE] Canards thread
I went out the field yesterday and saw two red tails in a booming thermal I hurried to get my hand launch ready picked up my radio and ran to the thermal. I put together the skeeter so fast I mounted the wing backwards so I launched the skeeter backwards. Into the thermal my canard HLG went it was a little shaky at first but that's how a skeeter fly's anyway. One circle, two circles wow I was gaining, then all of a sudden one of the red tails looked down at the skeeter and dropped a turd, it hit the wing and folded. I thought I saw a smile on that red tail as he flew out of sight, I bet he was thinking he did me a favor. I wonder if orbitone need a hand launch a little glue it will be competition ready. [RCSE] Contest announcement F3J March 18th and 19th
Harbor Soaring Society is proud to present 2 days of F3J soaring competition, current F3J rules 2 man tows. Each day will be flown as a single contest with scores combined for overall champion. To run this contest as efficiently as possible there will be a pre-determined matrix. This means entries close March 1, 2000. We will accept ONE pilot per frequency, there will be no team protection. Everyone will fly against everyone at some point in the contest. Contestants are expected to provide their own launch equipment. Top 8 pilots will be in 15min fly-off rounds, trophies for top 10 finishers combined. Contest entry forms now available on the Harbor Soaring Society web page. http://www.1hss.org/ RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] RES Skegs
Dave, I have been flying the Fall Soaring Fest for the last ten years, and I do not recall an incident like the one you described. I do recall many ankles, and legs, hit by non skaged gliders sliding threw the landing area and have yet to see a severe injury due directly to a skag. I do recall Don Vickers and Marshal Searcy being struck and knocked down by a glider flying threw the landing zone, Don was a young 69 and Marshal just had bypass surgery. What I report here is fact and first hand information and anything else that I do not know is speculation and not reported on RCSE. Contest people need to make decisions for contest people there seems to be many non and anti contest people giving there opinions in an area where they do not participate. This is a problem when real and workable rules need to be ironed out. I guess I have spoken my peace this forum is a place to discuss such issues but if your a non contest person remember your opinion can be fuel to the fire of trying have a organized set of rules for RES a performance challenged class that I stay away from. joe rodriguez -Original Message- From: Dave [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, January 27, 2000 7:41 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Mike Stump Subject: Re: [RCSE] RES Skegs Mike, sems to me that a few years ago at the Fall Soaring Festival, a guy from Sacramento hed the side of his head opened up, either by a skeg or nose protruberances, not certain which.
