Re: [OSM-talk] smoothness
This turned out rather long. Summary: smoothness is a useful tag, though the wiki definition may be lacking. Thanks for reading. On Nov 27, 2008, at 11:27, Dave Stubbs wrote: The table is full of such subjective assessments: can I roller blade on it. No, I can't. It doesn't help that I can't roller blade at all. How about: Would an average roller blader like to use this? Personally, I couldn't care less for an absolutely precise and objective definition for a tag. If the description gives a good idea of how to use the tag in most situations, that's perfect. There'll always be corner cases. It's quite possible that people have tried too hard to define smoothness objectively (and have claimed too strongly that it's even possible to define it 100% precisely). Here's how I see smoothness (on the smooth side of things, I don't care about things beyond bad). If the people that formulated the smoothness proposal disagree, I guess that proves your point. excellent: this is what well paved new cycle ways tend to be like; some fine type of asphalt; good for roller-skating, a pleasure on a road bike good: your typical road in good state; a cycleway like above but with some small bumps from tree roots because they didn't care to put a proper foundation (?) underneath; a high-quality non-paved footway in a park intermediate: a road the has been worn down and could use a new cover, some unevenness from heavy traffic; motorway made of slabs of concrete with annoying bumps when passing to a new slab (you'd really want to use the fast lane exclusively if that's recently been repaved); lots of tree root induced bumps on a cycleway; a footway in a park with coarser gravel or uneven enough that there'll be puddles when it rains; high-quality cobblestoned road (small stones with flat surface, or perhaps some filling of the gaps); the average motorist wouldn't mind, the average cyclist wouldn't complain (at least not loudly), you wouldn't want to skate here. Anything worse, I'd tag bad for now and put a note/fixme in so someone else can say how bad it really is. I think smoothness fits the above distinctions quite well. Together with surface=paved/unpaved, it should provide most information about a way's surface that users of wheeled (on-road) vehicles would like to have when deciding which road to choose. It’s not exactly taxing.) It would take more time to integrate an existing set-up, let alone make it usable for n00bs - which is, after all, the point of all this - than to write something new. But really, we have the chance to do something much better. Right now we have three mainstream editors. On a scale of 0-10 where 0 is approachable and 10 is super-powerful, Potlatch is probably 5, Merkaartor 8, JOSM 10. We don’t actually have an entry-level editor. Of course there are things one can do to improve usability, and I'm hoping to make Potlatch a 3 or 4 eventually, but to turn it into something really approachable (like Google Map Maker) would basically mean we go from having no entry-level editor to having no intermediate editor. Which isn't helpful. So let's kill two birds with one stone. OSB + entry-level editing = OSM is suddenly editable by the great unwashed. If you're not logged in, you could: - report bugs (OSB-style) If you are logged in, you could: - report bugs (OSB-style) - place and tag POIs - change way names/refs - some other limited tagging (road type? oneway? access?) No need to have geometry drawing, which is the hard bit to code. If you want to draw ways, you need to make a sufficient commitment to the project to learn an editor, just as thousands have already done. And if you’ve progressed through this entry-level editor, you’re a lot less likely to foul up when you do. Some of this could be built on OpenLayers as per the data browser (though Chris Schmidt has expressed reservations about JS performance with many ways loaded in IE and FF2, and he knows much more about this sort of thing than I do). In my experience, most browsers start complaining about lengthy JS runtime when more then (say) 200 OL vectors features are loaded and responsiveness becomes poor. 200 way segments (or even 1k) is not much in any built-up area, so only the highest zoomlevels are usable when all features on the map are expressed in OL vectors. On the other hand, OL/browers are fine with 10k segments in a single vector (see yournavigation.org and generate a long route). No, subjective is really about that there are some paths which I'd consider impassible with a wheeled vehicle, and have then seen someone zoom down on a mountain bike. That makes the assessment essentially dependent on my skill level on a mountain bike. ie: subjective. The table is full of such subjective assessments: can I roller blade on it. No, I can't. It doesn't help that I can't roller blade at all. So sure, if the tag was, is it possible to roller blade down this road assuming a skill level of a Grade III Roller Blading Proficiency Award? then it might have a point, but it's not. Can I use a racing bike on it? How often are you willing to stop to repair punctures? Did you buy an easily broken racing bike, or a slightly tougher one? And as has been mentioned by someone else, are we supposed to be taking account of quicksand? Because that's potentially quite smooth. Or a perfectly smooth road that permanently has 3 inches of standing water? This tag actually has nothing to do with smoothness, it's just that smoothness is a particular property which is useful to know for some of the excellent and good transport mediums. So the key name really sucks. Is it usable with a tank? WTF?! One of the main things that's going to stop a tank is road width.. but that clearly isn't going to stop a bike as much. But maybe the road is really wide and smooth enough for roller skates, just with tank traps built in (you can easily get round them with roller blades). N, the Norwegian visitor to Bangkok entered that village the previous day in norwegian-for-village having told Potlatch she was working in Norwegian. T decides it is really a town, so changes it to town-in-thai and uploads it. N downloads it the following day and sees town-in-norwegian. Mapnik also sees it and renders town-as-a-symbol. You are ignoring the fact that human languages rarely produce interchangeable words which really mean the same. Each language is heavily influenced by it's peoples history. Just let's pick up your village-example. In German we name it Dorf. If you ask how to translate Dorf to English, you'll get village and cottage. cottage translates back either to Dorf (multiple houses), but also as Häuschen, Hütte, Landhaus (forms of a single house). Just think of someone inventing a Tag cottage, which should be translated? Which meaning does apply? The best example for such an untranslatable word is trunk as in highway=trunk. What is this? In the UK, it is a declaration that a street is part of the main road system, but it does in no way indicate any kind of traffic rules, number of lanes to expect etc. In fact, any trunk road could end up being anything from motorway down to unclassified if it hadn't been labelled trunk by the authorities. This trunk produces all kinds of strange conflicts because of its unclear meaning, which leads to having every country define which kind of road should be tagged as trunk. In Germany we chose to tag roads which are similar to Autobahn (dual carriageway or four lanes), but lack the blue road sign. But this is simply not what you'd expect in Great Britain. By simply translating the word trunk, you'll end up in a mess if you have Germans running around in the UK, retagging every trunk road as primary road because it is no Kraftfahrstrasse (or whatever the translation would be). Re: [OSM-talk] smoothness
2008/11/27 Robert Vollmert [EMAIL PROTECTED]: How about: Would an average roller blader like to use this? Take a cyclist with a racing bike. If they are training at high speed they might find a road with irregularities and a few potholes unusable. The next day the same rider and bike might be out on a ride with the family and find the same road perfectly usable. On the family ride the fact the road is low traffic and scenic is much more important than on the training ride. Clearly the cyclists objectives are playing a large part in determining if a road is usable or not. Is a road with potholes really smoothness=good? It must be because I saw a racing bicycle use it. I also use a city bike to map brideways and would happily use the track pictured as smoothness=horrible if my objective is mapping. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Image:Jena_Trackexample_profile.jpg Since I used it on a city bike it must be surface=intermediate. If you try to use the tag objectively it just does not work. If you need to think about the average roller blader or average racing cyclist then it is not objective. Trying to pretend it is subjective when it isn't is just going to cause problems when people try and use it objectively. Similar surfaces will end up with very different smoothness values based on who they have seen use the road. Collecting data to objectively classify smoothness is going to be a lot of work. Physically measuring parts of the surface and the like. I don't see the problem with admitting this and coming up with a decent subjective scheme. I think you probably would get a lot of the benefit of an objective scheme with a fraction of the effort. -- DavidD ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

They have un-published the listing, an event that occurs not very often - usually only if the reviewer who published it realises they made a mistake soon after. The specific guideline reads something like caches that require (unusual) third party software to be installed are not permitted, there's also a similar rule about cache perminance in terms of external resources on the net - eg hosting an mp3 on a personal website will not be acceptable as a part of the 'puzzle' as they have a habit of falling offline. They have business with Google as far as using their Maps API, publishing KML files, and using AdWords, I don't think they have any further links with them. This includes quite extreme behaviour on the GC.com side as they are not using their usual methods of disabling or archiving caches. Instead they reset their entire database with respect to this cache to the state before it was published. It's like they really want to clean all traces related to this geocache. The GC.com side is usually just a volunteer reviewer rather than one of the company's employees. This is a strange explanation as geocaches requesting you to find a certain image on google earth are pretty common. On the other hand Geocaching.com seems to have a business with google. This may be the explanation why they don't like to deal with openstreetmap. I really wonder if it's google behind this. As noted, caches can be removed completely from the site - 'unpublished' on the event of the reviewer making a mistake. IMHO a very interesting issue and may mean that google sees a serious competitor arriving ... Not in my view. Till I'm asking some contacts I have to see if I can get the full logs for publishing and subsequent removal of it to see if a reason is further given. -- Regards, Thomas Wood (Edgemaster) ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk -- Regards, Thomas Wood (Edgemaster) ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Hi, Siehe unten. Mike On Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 18:35, Dr. Franz-Josef Behr [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Vielleicht gut für unser Projekt: Google's neue TOS, insbesondere 11.1: http://code.google.com/apis/maps/terms.html http://googlegeodevelopers.blogspot.com/2008/11/update-to-google-maps-api-terms-of.html Update to the Google Maps API Terms of Service Posted by Mickey Kataria, Product Manager From time to time we release updates to the terms of service governing our products. We recently released an updated version of the Google Maps API Terms of Service. Based on feedback from that update, we are releasing a revised version today. The Google Maps API TOS is intended to satisfy several goals: it gives Google the rights needed to operate a service which overlays content on the map, gives us the ability to showcase popular mashup sites, and allows us to index and provide search over Maps API sites so that Google users can find them. What changed and why? A key goal for the November 12th revision was to eliminate a number of unpopular restrictions, including the prohibition on friend finder applications and non-site mashups. We also eliminated ambiguity about whether it's OK to use the API w/ password-protected free sites (it is). Additionally, we streamlined the format of the terms, eliminating the need for developers to reference multiple sets of incorporated terms of service, including the Google Terms of Service and the Google Maps Terms of Service to figure out what rights and obligations applied to their use of the Maps API. That format change appears to have called attention to the License From You to Google - section 11 in the November 12th update. That content license has always been part of the Google Maps API Terms of Service, because it is contained in the Google Terms of Service. Both the original and the November 12th updated Terms of Service relied on that provision to ensure Google received a sufficient content license to provide the Maps API service and to promote the service, including by highlighting excellent mashups as we did here. That section does not provide Google a license to all of the content on your Maps API site to use for any purpose, nor is that how we have treated the content from existing Maps API sites that were developed under the terms that existed prior to the November 12th update. Section 11(b), which we initially included in the November 12th update, created a lot of confusion among our API developers who are publishing licensed content. In 11(b) we were trying to be clear that we wanted a broader license from Maps API developers for use of business listings information. However, given the confusion that resulted, we removed that language from today's revision of the terms. Thank you for using the Google Maps API. We look forward to continuing to create great products together with you.

Die 10% aktiv kommt also in etwa hin.

-- Karl Eichwalder ___ Talk-de mailing list Talk-de@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-de
