Re: [Techno-Chat]: Polk Audio S6 Impressions So Far!

2017-06-30 Thread Dane Trethowan
While we're on the subject of Wireless speaker systems, I've ordered my
Definitive Technology W9 speaker which is supposed to be up there with
the a7 so I'm hoping that this time next week I'll be nodding my head in
agreement.

The W9 has some extra functionality that hthe A7 does not which suits me
hence the reason I ordered one, that functionality being the Play-Fi
protocol which is also available on the Polk Audio Omni series, Rotel's
fine T14 FM/DAB Wi-Fi Streamer etc.

Dane and I have agreed to pool our resourses to compile a jioint review of this

initial findings.

In terms of audio quality which, after all, is the crux issue when it comes to
devices of this type, I had to take a few moments quiet repose so that I could
collect my thoughts. All I can say at this juncture is that I'm very glad
nobody could see me when I attained my first streaming audio. Reason: I was
simply stunned! The device has four amplifiers to drive it's individual drivers
and, my oh my, Can you tell! The audio when streaming high quality content is
just unsurpassed by any other wireless audio system of it's kind which I have
ever encountered.

It doesn't quite come up to the standards of my Samsung HW-6500J sound bar. But
then again, I wouldn't have expected it too. We're talking about two entirely
different devices here, fundimentally different in functionality.

But it deffitely compares favourably with the Boes and Bows wireless systems I
have here. And neither of those is exactky what I'd call bad!

But there's one very marked difference, and I noticed it immediately. If you
position the speaker correctly in relation to your listening environment at the
time, the stereo separation and reproduction quality are just amazing for such
a device.

I put some very high quality audio content into the device, and was rewarded by
sound production which would put many high-end high fidelity systems to shame.
Again, one must be realistic in terms of making comparisons, and I'm very lothe
to do so when systems operate so very differently. I will be more detailed
later when we do our primary review. But I certainly wouldn't have any
difficulty with sitting listening to this device for hours at a time. For me
personally, it has re-enabled my appreciation of stereo sound, something which
I've not had for some years. And I'm thrilled for that reason alone!

More later.

Re: [Techno-Chat]: Polk Audio S6 Impressions So Far!

2017-06-30 Thread Dane Trethowan
Interesting and I do agree that the speaker - for what it is - sounds excellent
given the money one costs the Polk Audio S6 is a bargain.
I also like the Omni s2 though that speaker is a different kettle of fish.
One can buy better of course and we’ll talk about that later.
With these wireless speaker offerings there’s a little more to consider than
just sound quality, how your speaker is going to connect to your network and
the protocols it supports over your network for example however let’s not get
into the nitty gritty right now, the Omni s6 is a speaker worthy of the Polk
Audio name without a doubt.
Perhaps a little resonate in its sound but yes, something that can be enjoyed.

Correct that, it should have been two countries. We get the same prices for 10
days on thee UK dealer’s web shop. From 18 to 28 July, I believe it is. So if
you’re looking for something from Freedom and its associates and you’re in the
UK, go grab yourself a bargain at http://www.sightandsound.co.uk

Actually, when I wrote this, it was yesterday. But for some reason it never got
sent until today. So I have to go hide my head with embarrassment. Apple
released the very first iPhone on 29 June 2007. It was indeed a business
disaster, at least the business model was. Until the 3GS there was no
accessibility. But since that time, things have gone from good, to great, to

I’m out of descriptive terms. And I don’t think anybody could possibly dispute
the role that Apple has played in not only mobile accessibility, but assistive

RE: [Techno-Chat]: Reading ePub books

2017-06-30 Thread David Griffith
Personally I do not like reading in Browsers on my devices although clearly it
can be done.

For me especially with books I want more navigation options for chapters and
bookmarking etc.

On iOS - Voicedream Reader is what I use nearly all the time though iBooks is a
free option. Voicedream I like because you can easily navigate by time or book
percentage. Just swiping up or down on the play/pause button navigates by the
chosen navigation unit. Swiping up or down on the percentage box navigate in
increments of 5%
On Android I also use Voicedream Reader though it is not as good as on the iOS
side as it tends to be erratic at controlling speed of playback for some
voices. For this reason I also use 3MP Reader (I think that is what it is
called( - I might have to check. This is also a good reader but I have found no
way of deleting books from the library. For both readers on Android I find it
best to open the books directly from a File Explorer type program like Total
Commander or even the Dropbox app. The big selling point of Android readers for
me is the ability to use Eloquence speech.
On Windows I use QRead which is a paid app but has good screenreader support.
Pressing control H will normally bring up the book heading, normally including
chapters etc. You can navigate as if you werer for example in a word document.
Text Aloud Mp3 or its free alternative - I cannot remember its name Bannabolka
I think are options for conversion of ePub into mp3.

On the Mac side I used to use Stanza but support for modern ePub formats has
also become erratic with spurious characters being included. I personally find
iBooks flaky with frequent busy messages as well so I am not sure there is now
a problem free good Mac option though iBooks is the best of a bad bunch I
guess. Note that not everybody has the problems with iBooks that I encounter so
it might be fine for you.

Finally of course the Victor Reader Stream is an excellent ePub reader with
good button navigation options. The books will play with TTS when placed in
the $DTB folder.

Re: [Techno-Chat]: Reading ePub books

2017-06-30 Thread Travis Siegel

I know a lot of folks don't like this option, but for me, it works well.

An epub file is just a zip file with all the contents of the book
compressed into a single file.

All you need to do to read an epub book is extract the file, then
navigate to the html files, and read them with your browser of choice.
I like this method, and it works for me, your mileage may vary.

Of course, this won't work if you have drm protected epubs, as the
browser won't know how to decrypt the drm content, but under all other
circumstances, it works just fine.

Yes indeed, Happy Birthday IOS!
The first iPhone was available in 3 flavours, 4, 8 and 16GB storage capacity.
Apple introduced the “Apps Store” a year later but - up until that point - the

The iPhone without a doubt revolutionised hand-held devices and from that
Android and Windows Phone were born.
I joined the party with an Apple 3GS in late 2009 and positively marvelled at
how a blind person could use and read a Touch Screen, if anyone had told me up
until that point that a blind person could use a Touch Screen efficiently then
I would have laughed quite literally in their face.
The iPhone reminds me of a Braille Note Taker in some ways, some people think
an iPhone - like a Note Taker - is God’s gift to the blind. And thus exclude
other technology’s or other equipment that may be more practical, there is a
big wide world out there.

[Techno-Chat]: Happy Birhday

2017-06-30 Thread Gordon Smith
Good day to you all.

I’m not starting another Apple thread here, it’s more of a generic observation.

It was exactly 10 years ago today that Apple released the first iPhone. What a
lot has changed in those ensuing years, and quite a bit has not changed. iOS in
its nappy-wetting days was very very basic. I joined the party with the release
of the 3GS and it’s continued from there.

The word is that Apple plans to release the first public beta of iOS11 later
today, so that should be interesting.

Anyway, happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you! Happy birthday, dear
iPhone, happy birthday to you!

Ten candles on the cake already.

Hi!

I'm hoping for accurate information on this.

I'm looking at setting my Late 2012 Mac Mini as a server machine and thus am
thinking of using some old Firewire drives I have here as part of it.

I'm told that I'll have to install an earlier OS than Sierra given that
- acording to what I've heard - Sierra no longer comes with Firewire drivers
nor Firewire support.

I have to be honest in saying that I find this rather odd so some confirmation
of the status quo would be much appreciated.

Re: [Techno-Chat]: FS Podcast

2017-06-30 Thread Dane Trethowan

Debbie!

I wonder what you think of this and I'm sure you have a view given
you're as into technology as I am.

If what I'm hearing is anything to go by a lot of people - being sick
and tired of forever paying upgrade costs for JAWS, this, that and the
other - are giving JAWS the shove and just using NVDA.

NVDA is - without a doubt - an incredible product and very functional -
even more incredible given its available free of charge -.

A lot of folks seem to be of the opinion that NVDA does what I want so
why should I bother even using JAWS etc.

It also seems that a lot of those who were users of Window-Eyes won't be
making the migration to JAWS choosing to use NVDA instead, have you
noticed any particular trends here?

Let's put this into further context.

Its convention time in the US so yep, the perfect time to take advantage of all these
offers - and wistfully think of the United states as paradise -.

Good Friday

I’ve just spent a happy hour listening to the FS podcast for 29 June. That was
the best podcast I’ve ever heard from them. Jonathan did detailed demos on the
ElBraille, and announced some quite startling price reductions on all of their
software titles, plus reductions on the Pearl camera and so on.

JAWS licenses are, at last, within the reach of most people. For specifics
visit their website.

2017-06-30 Thread Dane Trethowan
Yep, shows how interested blindness organisations such as Blind Clowns
Of Australia are in their members, I did say interested though perhaps I
should have said not interested.

Conventions such as the ACB and NFB conventions in the States are great
occasions where the latest technology available to consumers can be
shown, when did Blind Clowns ever organise something such as a useful
convention showing off technology and helping people actually get hold
of it? And Blind Clowns wonder why people aren't donating or supporting
these days.
