[Bug 1305522] Re: Backport Synaptics HID touchpad driver for 14.04

2014-05-15 Thread Marc Nieper-Wißkirchen
@AceLan Kao: I tested your newly built kernel:

mnieper@macaulay:~$ uname -r
3.13.0-27-generic
mnieper@macaulay:~$ lsmod | grep i2c_hid
i2c_hid18860 0
hid 106148 4 i2c_hid,hid_multitouch,hid_rmi,usbhid

The touchscreen works as does the touchpad! In addition, the touchpad
recognizes multi-touch events (e.g. four fingers for showing the unity
search, etc.), which it didn't with the -24 kernel.

[Bug 1305522] Re: Backport Synaptics HID touchpad driver for 14.04

2014-05-14 Thread Marc Nieper-Wißkirchen
Okay, I tested the kernels in comment #21. With all three of them, I
still have touchscreen functionality. I blacklisted i2c_hid at boot
time. After modprobe'ing the i2c_hid module, the touchscreen still
works, but scrolling with the touchpad does not work anymore (thus, it
is the same behaviour as the standard kernel exhibits).

I am now testing the kernels in comment #24.

[Bug 1305522] Re: Backport Synaptics HID touchpad driver for 14.04

2014-05-14 Thread Marc Nieper-Wißkirchen
I tried the proposed fix on my Dell XPS 13 (Sputnik 3) system. With the
proposed kernel 3.13.0-26, the touchpad works in fact without
blacklisting i2c_hid.

However, the touchscreen ceases to work with the proposed kernel (it
does work with the regular 3.13.0-24 kernel). Thus this patch should not
be released in its current state.

Ubuntu no longer uses GDM. Is this an issue with LightDM/12.04?

[Bug 820328] [NEW] Unity depends on gdm as a desktop manager and gives empty screen in ldm

2011-08-03 Thread Marc Nieper-Wißkirchen
Public bug reported:

Under Natty, the file /etc/X11/Xsession.d/65compiz_profile-on-session
reads as follows:

# This file is sourced by Xsession(5), not executed.
# Select unity profile if we are in the default session.
# The default profile is used otherwise.

if [ x$GDMSESSION = xgnome ]; then
COMPIZ_CONFIG_PROFILE=ubuntu
export COMPIZ_CONFIG_PROFILE
fi

The purpose of this script is to enable the Unity plugin in compiz in
the default session (where there is no gnome-shell or -panel) so that
the Unity shell is activated. There are two problems with this script:

1) The first one being that it depends on the environment variable
$GDMSESSION being set while /etc/X11/Xsession runs. This leads to
problems on LTSP clients where LDM instead of GDM is used so that there
is no variable $GDMSESSION. (This problem could be solved in the ldm
package by adding a script to /usr/share/ldm/rc.d but this wouldn't
solve the problem for other desktop managers.) In Oneiric, the
environment $DESKTOP_SESSION is used instead of $GDMSESSION but I am not
sure whether this should be set by all desktop managers.

2) The second problem with this script is that enabling the Unity plugin
depends on the session being named gnome. This means that one cannot
rename the session in /usr/share/xsessions without breaking Unity or one
cannot easily install a second Unity session in this directory.

A solution would be to enable the Unity plugin while gnome-session is
processing the file /usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/ubuntu.session,
although I don't know how to hook a script in a gnome-session session
file.

[Bug 820417] [NEW] LDM doesn't set ~/.dmrc correctly

2011-08-03 Thread Marc Nieper-Wißkirchen
Public bug reported:

I am running Natty on an LTSP fat client and server.

In /usr/share/ldm/rc.d/X50-dmrc-processing, ldm reads and/or sets
~/.dmrc depending on the chosen session.

The variables $LDM_SESSION and $CURRENT_SET usually contain strings like
gnome-session --session=ubuntu. In particular, they usually contain
spaces.

This seems to make the lines

LDM_SESSION=$CURRENT_SET

and

NEW_SESSION_SETTING=$(get_desktop_file $LDM_SESSION)

behave badly as only the first part 'gnome-session' is looked at. The
result (due to the further processing of said script) is that the
session that ends up in ./~dmrc is always 'gnome-failsafe'.

More information:

In order for Unity to function properly, the /etc/X11/Xsession.d
/65compiz_profile-on-session is being sourced by Xsession.

However, it checks the $GDMSESSION variable, which is not set in LDM.

It is still not possible to install nvidia-current in a chrooted

[Bug 819394] [NEW] Unity desktop does not start up on fat LTSP clients

2011-08-01 Thread Marc Nieper-Wißkirchen
Public bug reported:

I am currently experiencing a bug with the following system setup:

1) a Ubuntu server instance running the server edition of 11.04
2) an LTSP fat client, which bootstraps from the server
3) a virtual machine that serves the home directories for the LTSP fat client

When I specify

LDM_XSESSION=gnome-session --session=classic-gnome

in lts.conf, everything works fine. Afterwords I can start Unity by
typing unity --replace in a terminal. However, without the
LDM_XSESSION variable or with

LDM_XSESSION=gnome-session --session=ubuntu,

Unity fails to load (only Nautilus and Compiz seem to be running).

[Bug 625402] Re: Dell E6510 with NVIDIA: Kernel panics after switching video output

2010-09-20 Thread Marc Nieper-Wißkirchen
Jeremy,

in the meantime, I had installed Ubuntu 10.10 as a test because 10.04
wasn't usable for me due to the mentioned bug above. With the current
development version of Ubuntu 10.10 there are no kernel panics anymore.
(However, the system sometimes has difficulties to recognize the
external display during boot and the Fn-F8 behaviour (producing super-p)
reported elsewhere is a nuisance.)

As linux-2.6.35-22 doesn't show my reported error anymore, I don't know
what to do with the needs-upstream-testing flag.

[Bug 625402] [NEW] Dell E6510 with NVIDIA: Kernel panics after switching video output

2010-08-27 Thread Marc Nieper-Wißkirchen
Public bug reported:

My laptop is a Dell E6510 with an nVidia NVS 3100M graphics card. I have
experienced the following problems:

a) The laptop panel remains black with the nouveau driver.
b) If I plug in an external monitor in the docking station before booting, the
nouveau driver displays everything correctly on the external monitor.
c) Using the nvidia driver, I can use both the external or the internal screen
depending on whether the external screen was plugged in before booting.
d) However, whenever I try to switch between the external and/or internal
screen while the system is running (using nvidia-settings or hotkeys), the
kernel panics (flashing lights on keyboard).
e) This happens also whenever I turn off the external monitor so that the
laptop wants to switch to the internal screen.

[Bug 556761] Re: ntrig stylus: can only left-click

2010-08-07 Thread Marc Nieper-Wißkirchen
Update: With the latest updates in Lucid, finger touch now works (even
with the single touch firmware - I wasn't able to run Windows 7 with
KVM/QEMU at an acceptable speed in order to install the multitouch
firmware).

One issue remains: The driver does not distinguish between my finger and
my palm, which makes having finger touch worse than living without it...
(Speaking of this: Is there a way to disable finger touch in a
configuration file as long as this issue remains?)

Marc

P.S.: Now that my pen recognize left and right button clicks, is there
also a way to map the middle button event to one my pen buttons?

[Bug 556761] Re: ntrig stylus: can only left-click

2010-04-27 Thread Marc Nieper-Wißkirchen
Rafi,

thank you very much! With your patch, I do now can right-click (I also
had to add the mapping from button2 to 3 in order to achieve this).

As I have never updated my firmware on my Dell XT2, I am pretty sure
that I am still using a single touch version of the firmware. I don't
have Windows Vista oder Windows 7. Is there a way to find out the
firmware version and to upgrade without Windows? (Otherwise I will have
to see how I can get an external drive and a Windows installation on
it.)

Best,

[Bug 556761] [NEW] ntrig stylus: can only left-click

2010-04-06 Thread Marc Nieper-Wißkirchen
Public bug reported:

Release: 10.04

Since the last major upgrade of the packages related to the touchscreen
functionality of the n-trig digitizer of my Dell XT2 a few days ago, I
can use my fingers as well as the stylus to move the cursor around.
Tapping with the stylus also works.

What does not work is the following:

1) Tapping with my fingers.
2) All button clicks on my stylus are reported as left mouse clicks and not as
right and middle mouse clicks as they should.
3) There does not seem to be an eraser functionality.

[Bug 436340] Re: Installer fails: grub fails on Intel ICH10 raid

2009-11-09 Thread Marc Nieper-Wißkirchen
I do have the same problem here. I have upgraded from Jaunty to Karmic.
apt-get install grub2 quits with the following error:

grub-probe: error: no mapping exists for `isw_eceeeacaf_diskset1'.

As much I would like to see this error properly fixed, is there an
alternative fix, e.g. by specifying a proper mapping by hand?

[Bug 474703] [NEW] Booting an LTSP client results in kernel panic if receiving more than one ntp server via dhcp

2009-11-04 Thread Marc Nieper-Wißkirchen
Public bug reported:

This is a bug report on ltsp-client-core in version 5.1.90-0ubuntu3
under Ubuntu 9.10.

The script /opt/ltsp/i386/usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/init-
premount/udhcp is not robust enough if it receives from the dhcp server
more than one ntp server (stored in ntpsvr), which happens in our local
installation where ntpsvr eventually holds four space-separated ip
addresses of ntp servers.

This causes problems in /conf/param.conf, generated by the function
export_configuration() in udhcp because something like
export NTPSVR=IP1 IP2 IP3 IP4 is not a valid shell command.

This results in /init aborting and the kernel panics.

[Bug 427782] Re: ubuntu karmic development kernel does not include patch to enable buttons on stylus for the N-Trig digitizer

2009-10-04 Thread Marc Nieper-Wißkirchen
The N-trig digitizer is being built into more and more tablets/notebooks
(Dell Latitude XT, Latitude XT2, HP TouchSmart TX2, Lenovo Thinkpad
T400s and X200t, etc.). There is no reason why Ubuntu shouldn't work out
of the box with all these notebooks.

Using the mainline daily kernels is not really an option for those who
expect their Ubuntu to work without installing additional deb archives
and for those who need the patched Ubuntu kernels (as opposed to
mainline kernels) for some other reason.

Thus I strongly vote for including the bug fix in the Ubuntu kernel.
Also because the patch has been in use for some time now (including a
couple of Ubuntu users) and I am not aware of any complaints about it.

[Bug 401067] Re: [GM45] 3D application fail to run through Wine and often crash X

2009-09-15 Thread Marc Nieper-Wißkirchen
I can confirm this bug with the current Karmic testing version on my
Dell Latitude XT 2 with a GM45 chipset (Intel 4500 MHD graphics).

Furthermore, I have also this bug without running wine at all: Running
the linux version of the original Neverwinter Nights game by Bioware is
fine - the game switches properly in fullscreen mode. Quitting the game,
however, crashes X about 80% of the time.

(If you want to reproduce the bug, you can simply download the game
resources and the linux client, which are available from Bioware.
Running the game will show a screen where you are prompted to type in a
valid CD key. When you abort this dialog, the game exits and X crashes.)

[Bug 428555] [NEW] alsa sound does not work out of the box on a dell latitude xt 2

2009-09-12 Thread Marc Nieper-Wißkirchen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alsa-base

I am running the current testing version of Ubuntu 9.10 on my Dell
Latitude XT 2. The sound does not work out of the box. After I have
added options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m4-1 to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-
base.conf I can listen to sound from my computer.

I'd suggest to improve Karmic in this regard before it is being released
by either

a) changing the alsa code so that the Latitude XT 2 works with the
snd-hda-intel driver without any special options,
b) adding the model dell-m4-1 to the options whenever a Latitute XT 2 is
detected.

Of course, b) could be improved by adding a new model option to the snd-
hda-intel driver (IDT 92HD71B7X codec) for the Latitude XT 2.

[Bug 427782] [NEW] ubuntu karmic development kernel does not include patch to enable buttons on stylus for the N-Trig digitizer

2009-09-11 Thread Marc Nieper-Wißkirchen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-generic

With the current Karmic development kernel (2.6.31-10.32-generic), the
buttons on my stylus of the N-Trig digitizer of my tablet PC (Dell
Latitude XT 2) do not work.

The upstream kernel is already patch against the needed 0001-ntrig-
tool-separation-and-pen-usages patch from
http://ofb.net/~rafi/latitude_xt.html.

I have applied this patch to the Karmic kernel sources and everything
works fine.

Karmic version.

[Bug 422359] Re: Wacom does not support 2.6.31 kernel and n-trig

2009-09-08 Thread Marc Nieper-Wißkirchen
I am running Ubuntu 9.10 on my Dell Latitude XT 2 that has an N-Trig
digitizer built in. The wacom driver does not recognize the digitizer
without the patch from here:

http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_name=4A03EE63.3010403%40seas.upenn.eduforum_name
=linuxwacom-discuss

With the patch, the digitizer starts to work.

Thus I suggest to include this patch into the Ubuntu package xserver-
xorg-linux-wacom.

Thanks for your reply, Sebastien.

Maybe you have misunderstood my point. That the password is asked for
wasn't my issue. My issue was that Evolution's UI thread is blocked (not
responding) while the password dialog is open - and this is certainly
unwanted behaviour (e.g. it makes the window system think, Evolution has
crashed).

And thanks for pointing out bugzilla.gnome.org.

[Bug 262758] Re: [Intrepid] Rendering errors on GM965 (Intel X3100)

2008-11-02 Thread Marc Nieper-Wißkirchen
Just found out that Compiz itself is also not without any problems: When
you do Alt-Tab the icons in the lower right corner of the minimized
windows are sometimes distorted.

Having done one more experiment: Turning off Compiz, Google Earth
becomes somewhat usable again and the glxgears canvas doesn't stay on
top if I move another window over it. On the other hand, the performance
of 3D rendering is still as bad.

We thus seem to have have two bugs here that may be related:

1) AIXGL (Compiz) and 3D (EXA acceleration) aren't working together
properly.

2) The 3D performance is much lower than in Hardy.

[Bug 262758] Re: [Intrepid] Rendering errors on GM965 (Intel X3100)

2008-11-02 Thread Marc Nieper-Wißkirchen
Is KWin also working with AIXGL? Then it is still likely that 1) is true
(add a reference to KWin, of course).

[Bug 292730] [NEW] Evolution is blocked when password for keyring is being asked for

2008-11-02 Thread Marc Nieper-Wißkirchen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Package: evolution
Releases: 8.10
Version: 2.24.1-0ubuntu2

When Evolution starts, it needs the keyring so I am being asked for the
corresponding passphrase. During this time, however, the Evolution
thread is blocked. This means, for example, that Evolution turns gray
when I have Compiz effects enabled.

The desired behaviour should be that Evolution waits patiently with the
UI thread still running during the time I enter the passphrase.

[Bug 252094] Re: Poor graphics performance on Intel G965 system, ubuntu 8.10 alpha 3

When you use 3D desktop effects (KWin, Compiz), does the canvas of
glxgears always stay on top? Is the rendering of Google Earth distorted?

[Bug 277827] Re: [GM45] 3D much slower in Intrepid than in Hardy

2008-10-29 Thread Marc Nieper-Wißkirchen
I can confirm problems with Intrepid here (Dell Latitude D830 with GMA
965). Frame rates in glxgears are rather low (around 600 fps) and video
overlay doesn't seem to work:

* googleearth isn't displaying anything correctly (worked in Hardy),
* celestia paints over its own menus
* As soon as I move a window over a running glxgears, I get display errors.

[Bug 262758] Re: [Intrepid] Rendering errors on GM965 (Intel X3100)

2008-10-29 Thread Marc Nieper-Wißkirchen
Hey,

I can confirm the problems running Ubuntu 8.10 on a Dell Latitude D830
with a GMA 965. Frame rates in glxgears are just at about 600 fps,
Google Earth shows distorted images (like in the screenshots of the
earlier bug reports), Compiz works okay as long as one does not try to
move a window over a running glxgears for example, KDE performance with
3D effects is very bad.

Hope this issue will be resolved soon.

[Bug 262758] Re: [Intrepid] Rendering errors on GM965 (Intel X3100)

2008-10-29 Thread Marc Nieper-Wißkirchen
Carsten,

I have just installed the molecule viewer Avogadro. I get similarly
distorted images like in your bug report #289106. Likewise, the canvas
sometimes tends to stay on top of all other windows. I have run the
program under Gnome with 3D effects enabled.

Thus I suggest you mark your bug report as a duplicate of this one.

[Bug 192382] Re: alsamixer broken in hardy - intel hda

2008-04-19 Thread Marc Nieper-Wißkirchen
With 2.6.24-16-generic and nVidia Corporation MCP51 High Definition
Audio I still have the problem here. With manually compiled alsa
modules, it works though.

P.S.: Is there a way to prevent that manually compiled modules (via m-a
a-i ...) are being overwritten when the kernel packages are being
upgraded?

[Bug 192382] Re: alsamixer broken in hardy - intel hda

2008-04-09 Thread Marc Nieper-Wißkirchen
Same problem here (amd64). Audio device is nVidia Corporation MCP51
High Definition Audio (rev a2) according to lspci -v.

Once solved the problem by compiling the alsa kernel module from the
alsa source package, but this kernel module has been overwritten by the
latest kernel updates.

As this seems to be somewhat independent of the hardware and affects
important functionality, I also vote for heightening the priority.

Re: [Bug 67904] Re: Rhythmbox crashes while playing (Edgy)

2006-10-24 Thread Marc Nieper-Wißkirchen
2006/10/24, Sebastien Bacher [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

Thanks for your bug. That looks like a dbus issue. Do you still have the
issue after restarting dbus (/etc/init.d/dbus restart) by example?

As the error has only occured sporadically, I cannot tell at the moment.
However, I'll try to restart dbus, once the error occurs again.

By the way, another issue I had with Rhythmbox was that one couldn't import
music folders that were mount points of logical volumes. This was with the
Dapper-version. I haven't checked whether the problem occurs with the Edgy
version as well.

Best,

Marc
