Okay, I tested the kernels in comment #21. With all three of them, I still have touchscreen functionality. I blacklisted i2c_hid at boot time. After modprobe'ing the i2c_hid module, the touchscreen still works, but scrolling with the touchpad does not work anymore (thus, it is the same behaviour as the standard kernel exhibits). [Bug 1305522] Re: Backport Synaptics HID touchpad driver for 14.04
I tried the proposed fix on my Dell XPS 13 (Sputnik 3) system. With the proposed kernel 3.13.0-26, the touchpad works in fact without blacklisting i2c_hid. However, the touchscreen ceases to work with the proposed kernel (it does work with the regular 3.13.0-24 kernel). [Bug 820328] [NEW] Unity depends on gdm as a desktop manager and gives empty screen in ldm
Public bug reported: Under Natty, the file /etc/X11/Xsession.d/65compiz_profile-on-session reads as follows: # This file is sourced by Xsession(5), not executed. # Select unity profile if we are in the default session. # The default profile is used otherwise. if [ x$GDMSESSION = xgnome ]; then COMPIZ_CONFIG_PROFILE=ubuntu export COMPIZ_CONFIG_PROFILE fi The purpose of this script is to enable the Unity plugin in compiz in the default session (where there is no gnome-shell or -panel) so that the Unity shell is activated. There are two problems with this script: 1) The first one being that it depends on the environment variable $GDMSESSION being set while /etc/X11/Xsession runs. This leads to problems on LTSP clients where LDM instead of GDM is used so that there is no variable $GDMSESSION. (This problem could be solved in the ldm package by adding a script to /usr/share/ldm/rc.d but this wouldn't solve the problem for other desktop managers.) In Oneiric, the environment $DESKTOP_SESSION is used instead of $GDMSESSION but I am not sure whether this should be set by all desktop managers. 2) The second problem with this script is that enabling the Unity plugin depends on the session being named gnome. This means that one cannot rename the session in /usr/share/xsessions without breaking Unity or one cannot easily install a second Unity session in this directory. A solution would be to enable the Unity plugin while gnome-session is processing the file /usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/ubuntu.session, although I don't know how to hook a script in a gnome-session session file. [Bug 820417] [NEW] LDM doesn't set ~/.dmrc correctly
Public bug reported: I am running Natty on an LTSP fat client and server. In /usr/share/ldm/rc.d/X50-dmrc-processing, ldm reads and/or sets ~/.dmrc depending on the chosen session. The variables $LDM_SESSION and $CURRENT_SET usually contain strings like gnome-session --session=ubuntu. In particular, they usually contain spaces. This seems to make the lines LDM_SESSION=$CURRENT_SET and NEW_SESSION_SETTING=$(get_desktop_file $LDM_SESSION) behave badly as only the first part 'gnome-session' is looked at. The result (due to the further processing of said script) is that the session that ends up in ./~dmrc is always 'gnome-failsafe'. [Bug 625402] Re: Dell E6510 with NVIDIA: Kernel panics after switching video output
Jeremy, in the meantime, I had installed Ubuntu 10.10 as a test because 10.04 wasn't usable for me due to the mentioned bug above. With the current development version of Ubuntu 10.10 there are no kernel panics anymore. (However, the system sometimes has difficulties to recognize the external display during boot and the Fn-F8 behaviour (producing super-p) reported elsewhere is a nuisance.) As linux-2.6.35-22 doesn't show my reported error anymore, I don't know what to do with the needs-upstream-testing flag. [Bug 625402] [NEW] Dell E6510 with NVIDIA: Kernel panics after switching video output
Public bug reported: My laptop is a Dell E6510 with an nVidia NVS 3100M graphics card. I have experienced the following problems: a) The laptop panel remains black with the nouveau driver. b) If I plug in an external monitor in the docking station before booting, the nouveau driver displays everything correctly on the external monitor. c) Using the nvidia driver, I can use both the external or the internal screen depending on whether the external screen was plugged in before booting. d) However, whenever I try to switch between the external and/or internal screen while the system is running (using nvidia-settings or hotkeys), the kernel panics (flashing lights on keyboard). e) This happens also whenever I turn off the external monitor so that the laptop wants to switch to the internal screen. [Bug 556761] Re: ntrig stylus: can only left-click
Update: With the latest updates in Lucid, finger touch now works (even with the single touch firmware - I wasn't able to run Windows 7 with KVM/QEMU at an acceptable speed in order to install the multitouch firmware). One issue remains: The driver does not distinguish between my finger and my palm, which makes having finger touch worse than living without it... [Bug 474703] [NEW] Booting an LTSP client results in kernel panic if receiving more than one ntp server via dhcp
Public bug reported: This is a bug report on ltsp-client-core in version 5.1.90-0ubuntu3 under Ubuntu 9.10. The script /opt/ltsp/i386/usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/init- premount/udhcp is not robust enough if it receives from the dhcp server more than one ntp server (stored in ntpsvr), which happens in our local installation where ntpsvr eventually holds four space-separated ip addresses of ntp servers. This causes problems in /conf/param.conf, generated by the function export_configuration() in udhcp because something like export NTPSVR=IP1 IP2 IP3 IP4 is not a valid shell command. This results in /init aborting and the kernel panics. ** Affects: ltsp (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Booting an LTSP client results in kernel panic if receiving more than one ntp server via dhcp https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/474703 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 427782] Re: ubuntu karmic development kernel does not include patch to enable buttons on stylus for the N-Trig digitizer
The N-trig digitizer is being built into more and more tablets/notebooks (Dell Latitude XT, Latitude XT2, HP TouchSmart TX2, Lenovo Thinkpad T400s and X200t, etc.). There is no reason why Ubuntu shouldn't work out of the box with all these notebooks. Using the mainline daily kernels is not really an option for those who expect their Ubuntu to work without installing additional deb archives and for those who need the patched Ubuntu kernels (as opposed to mainline kernels) for some other reason. Thus I strongly vote for including the bug fix in the Ubuntu kernel. Also because the patch has been in use for some time now (including a couple of Ubuntu users) and I am not aware of any complaints about it. -- ubuntu karmic development kernel does not include patch to enable buttons on stylus for the N-Trig digitizer https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/427782 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I'd suggest to improve Karmic in this regard before it is being released by either a) changing the alsa code so that the Latitude XT 2 works with the snd-hda-intel driver without any special options, b) adding the model dell-m4-1 to the options whenever a Latitute XT 2 is detected. Of course, b) could be improved by adding a new model option to the snd- hda-intel driver (IDT 92HD71B7X codec) for the Latitude XT 2. ** Affects: alsa-driver (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- alsa sound does not work out of the box on a dell latitude xt 2 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/428555 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thanks for your reply, Sebastien. Maybe you have misunderstood my point. That the password is asked for wasn't my issue. [Bug 262758] Re: [Intrepid] Rendering errors on GM965 (Intel X3100)
Just found out that Compiz itself is also not without any problems: When you do Alt-Tab the icons in the lower right corner of the minimized windows are sometimes distorted. Having done one more experiment: Turning off Compiz, Google Earth becomes somewhat usable again and the glxgears canvas doesn't stay on top if I move another window over it. On the other hand, the performance of 3D rendering is still as bad. We thus seem to have have two bugs here that may be related: 1) AIXGL (Compiz) and 3D (EXA acceleration) aren't working together properly. 2) The 3D performance is much lower than in Hardy. -- [Intrepid] Rendering errors on GM965 (Intel X3100) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/262758 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
