[Bug 442535] Re: wesnoth no sound, high cpu usage, can't quit without freezing the application
I'm adding info to my previous post in an effort to be more helpful- :) Rebooting my 9.10 Beta, I was able to make it to the sound preferences in Wesnoth (music, turn bell, sound effects interface sounds), turning them all off. With no sound enabled at all, I was able to play an entire scenario of Wesnoth, and quit the game without a problem. I was running Jaunty 9.04 previously with no issues with Wesnoth, so can I assume there was a change in the audio software? I just tried another scenario with all the sound preferences enabled- all is well for a few minutes, and then CPU usage spikes to 100% and stays there. Any effort to click off the sound again or quit the game is not possible. Wesnoth freezes up tight. I hope this helps, I'm still poking around myself. :) -- wesnoth no sound, high cpu usage, can't quit without freezing the application https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/442535 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 442535] Re: wesnoth no sound, high cpu usage, can't quit without freezing the application
*grin* Hi, klerfayt... I just happened to check here and you wrote just minutes ago. lol I had Wesnoth installed already under Jaunty. Last night I did uninstall it and re-installed it using the Synaptic Package Manager with the same results; enabling the sound settings seems to max out the CPU, and when it does it is very random when it occurs. Sometimes the CPU will max out and then drop to reasonable levels before spiking again 30 seconds later. If I go into the System Monitor and stop Pulse Audio then bring Wesnoth back up, I can play with little CPU usage without a problem (without sound, of course). I have a relatively new Toshiba A205 laptop with 2 gigs of memory and never had a problem playing Wesnoth before. At this point its a puzzler, but knowing the Ubuntu community (and the huge Wesnoth community) I'm pretty sure an answer is on the way. Thanks for asking. -- wesnoth no sound, high cpu usage, can't quit without freezing the application https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/442535 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 442535] Re: wesnoth no sound, high cpu usage, can't quit without freezing the application
FIXED. Thanks to- http://sweemengs-tech-world.blogspot.com/2008/08 /wesnoth-sound-issue.html sudo apt-get install libsdl1.2-esd Wesnoth now plays fine, with sound, and very low CPU usage. And it appears libsdl1.2-esd no longer exists, libsdl1.2debian-esd was used automatically instead. During loading this software you are warned there are dependency issues, and gives you a list of other files it relies on. I copied and pasted all of this data in my notes in case I find I need these additional files. But at this point, streaming radio plays fine, MP3 plays fine. I'll post again if I find any problems. :) -- wesnoth no sound, high cpu usage, can't quit without freezing the application https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/442535 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 242986] Re: gpib-modules-source will not compile
Thank you. I purchased an Agilent 5810 LAN/gpib gateway and use LAN commands, which are converted to GPIB. I later learned of a $150 USB/GPIB converter. I've had too much trouble from GPIB in the past on Fedora and Ubuntu. I did a reinstall of it in synaptic. Reran the upgrade, same error message. Even rebooted and logged into Gnome instead of KDE, same result. Is there more logfiles that would help? [Bug 554172] Re: CUPS and other system services not starting at boot
I've done 20 installs if 10.04, mostly upgrades from 9.10, all 32 bit. Initially only 2 machines were problem machines. My computer at home and my co-workers computer at the office. None of the others had this issue for months. The upgrades were done shortly after 10.04 was released. On the two problem machines, about a week and a half ago, I did things listed here in the link in Post 165: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9480172postcount=20 So far those machines have performed perfectly. But, I am now finding this happening to machines which had not had the issue. My main machine at the office, and my backup machine at the office last week, and last night my brother had it happen on his machine. He had not had any issues since I upgraded him in early May. Each time I run into this instance, I am now applying the work around above. It looks like many computers are going to be facing this issue even if they seemed fine for a period of time. It doesn't matter with respect to whether or not the computer is a newer, high spec machine, or an older low spec machine. It really looks like I had best install the workaround in post 165 as soon as I do any new installs (I have one I will be doing soon) just so people don't have this issue, and I don't have problems to fix for people. Menno in post 172 above said replacing kernel version 2.6.32-23 by version 2.6.32-24 seemed to solve the issue for him. That kernel came in my updates last night, so this issue happened to the three other computer before the updated kernel. I don't know if that makes a difference or not. -- CUPS and other system services not starting at boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/554172 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

In response to Sepero, message 165 above, could you please clarify the instructions in the second link in your post. When I run sudo su -, it puts me in root. In the next step, I'm assuming the words done exit are not to be included in what I enter into the terminal. I had no idea I was spamming this board. I'm sorry. [Bug 554172] Re: cups not starting at boot
My appologizies to Garry! I see that Linux Mint 9 is based on Ubuntu 10.04. I am truly sorry. After using Ubuntu 8.10, 9.04, 9.10, and now 10.04, I am somewhat disgruntled with 10.04. In theory, each version should be an improvement over the last. I've had a few relatively minor issues with past versions, and while I like the additional boot speed and appearence of 10.04, I've had 4 significant issues with it. There is the recurring problem where some hardware will not awake from sleep. Some systems work perfectly, and some not at all. Then I had the issue of web pages, scans, and pdf creator pages printing with a cream colored background. This has now been fixed. Then we have the issue of the printers disappearing, which still happens for me on two computers. To top things off though, one would assume that openoffice would work to perfection. I found last week that if you do an install of the openoffice individual applications or the entire suite from the repository, the spell checker doesn't function. It pretends it does. Openoffice in a linux distrubution should be rock solid. Any simple testing would reveal this problem. So I downloaded and installed openoffice directly from openoffice.org and have a fully functrioning spell checker and office suite. Quality control is certainly lacking! Then I tried to report this bug. The two preferred ways in their instructions didn't work, so I made up a launchpad bug report which crashed when it was trying to upload. At that point I gave up Frustration. I admire what Ubuntu has done for Linux, and their goals. But quality control and something that works out of the box is of great importance to convert new people to Linux. Printers that disappear and spell checks that pretend to function and do nothing don't cut it to convert new users to either Linux or Ubuntu. If I were a brand new user, I would look at all of these issues and say it is back to Windows. Linux isn't ready for the destop yet. -- cups not starting at boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/554172 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 554172] Re: cups not starting at boot
Hi Joel, Thank you for your very well written comments. I've been using Ubuntu for about 15 months. I've migrated everything to Ubuntu except my video editing and a Windows forms program. I do a lot of picture editing and some websites, as well as sell real estate and farm. I've installed Ubuntu on 20 different computers. For the power save problem I turn the power save off even though I wish it would work. The cream colored background issue has been fixed. The cups issue has been major, but for me personally it is a nuisance. I can live with it until it is fixed. For a co-worker in the office who I'm trying to convince to like Ubuntu and Linux, having his machine as one where the printers don't work is a major issue with him. But quite honestly when I found that the openoffice spell checker was non-functional on my own machine, and then checked a second machine and it had the same issue, and then checked on line and found others having the exact same issue, I was just dumbfounded that something like this could ever slip by and be released. Most of the people who I've installed Ubuntu for would never understand how to install the openoffice.org version. This kind of problem with the spell checker is something that reflects badly on openoffice, Ubuntu, and Linux. I tried installing several additional different packages from synaptic. That didn't help. At that point I gave up and went to openoffice.org. I didn't have time to play with something that should have never been broken in the first place. But for me to try to explain to the first time user why a spell checker goes through the motions but doesn't do anything is beyond anything I can do. My printers did show up on this computer tonight. But the next time they don't I will do what you suggested. I'm comfortable running the command line as long as someone tells me what to enter! -- cups not starting at boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/554172 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 554172] Re: CUPS and other system services not starting at boot
Hi Jens, Some machines have not had issues. When I first noticed it, after doing an upgrade, I had no printers. The help in the printer dialog boxes indicated cups was not running and to start it. Almost all of the upgrade installs had this issue. Many of them after an initial restrt have not had the issue. It made me wonder if it made a difference if the printers were turned on or off during the upgrade. Two systems continue to give me problems. On both of them I completely uninstalled cups, and completely reinstalled cups, and thens tarted cups, but the issue remains. [Bug 554172] Re: CUPS and other system services not starting at boot
Hi Joel, I hit the sack last night before you made your last post. Here is the strange thing. My machine at home was 50% of the time having the printers show up. The alst few days they were there. My co-workers machine at the office was 98% of the time the printers were missing. I made a document that I put on his desktop with the instructions for him to start cups in the terminal in case I wasn't here to help him. He has been off the end of last week and this week. I booted his computer 3 times on Saturday, primarily to take off the Ubuntu version of Open Office with the unworking spell checker, and to put on the openoffice.org version with the working spell checker. I DID NOT want him to see another issue with Ubuntu or Linux. But while I was doing his reboots Saturday, I would check the printers, and they were always there. The same is true this morning. I did a cold boot and then 2 reboots and they were theer all there times. I wonder if any of the Ubuntu updates fixed the issue! Especially since over the weekend and early this week I've had no problems with either machine. -- CUPS and other system services not starting at boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/554172 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

The cups update didn't change anything relative to this problem for me with the printers not being available after a startup. The machines that have had the problem continue to have the problem. The ones that don't have the issue haven't had a problem yet. But one thing I have noticed as compared to Ubuntu 8.10, 9.04, and 9.10, is that 10.04 occasionally, when you are printing a document, the printers show that they are available, but when you click to print a document, sometimes it will take 15 to 20 seconds before it will print. It says it is searching for the printer even though cups appears to be started and the printers are displayed. Re: [Bug 578920] Re: Cream Background Color when it should be white
Hi, Thank you very, very much! The reason this is a big problem for me is that I sell real estate, and all of the brochures I print out are printed from our website. And thank you for confirming the bug! I'm sure you are right about this being the same as the debian bug. I don't know if this affects other printers besides HP or not. This issue never showed up until Ubuntu 10.04. I've been using Ubuntu for about 14 months now, and am 95% away from Windows. I've installed it on about 20 computers for various people. I started with 8.10 about a month before 9.04. Then I upgraded to 9.04, 9.10, and now 10.04. I've learned a lot, but still I have much, much more to learn. Almost all of these systems are running HP printers. May I ask a question? First, to delete the -dUseCIEColor flag, PS2PDF_OPTIONS=$PS2PS_OPTIONS -dColorImageFilter=/FlateEncode \ -dPDFSETTINGS=/printer -dUseCIEColor do I delete the entire paste above, or just put a # sign in front of that. Or do I just delete a portion of the above? Also, should I be posting this to the bug report to help others? Thank you. Don On 05/17/2010 12:35 PM, vxxzy wrote: I have found a temporary workaround for now. This bug seems to really be another bug described here: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=580963 In order to get this working (This is more of a band-aid fix but works!) just remove the -dUseCIEColor flag from /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstopdf It fixed the yellow cream background on my Officejet 8500. This problem seems to only affect ubuntu 10.04. I administrate about 100+ computers and we run nothing but Linux. We have various HP Inject printers and Brother Printers. I have only just now started to see this issue come up on the Ubuntu 10.04 at a store where I am testing this new version. Re: [Bug 578920] Re: Cream Background Color when it should be white
Hi, It works perfectly now!!! Thank you so much. My old laser printer still works fine also. I would assume that once the real fix is out, my Ubuntu updates would update things. Is this a correct assumption? I hope you have or had a great day also! Don On 05/17/2010 03:44 PM, vxxzy wrote: You Welcome! You just need to delete a portion of that line. It should look like the one below: PS2PDF_OPTIONS=$PS2PS_OPTIONS -dColorImageFilter=/FlateEncode \ -dPDFSETTINGS=/printer Take note that the actual bug probably lay somewhere in ghostscript. This is a temporary solution. I do not know how it will behave with other printers (I think it should be fine though) So... Make a backup copy of '/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstopdf' just in case :) You can post this to the bug report but as mentioned before I would only use this solution as a temporary fix. Re: [Bug 578920] Re: Cream Background Color when it should be white
Hi David, Thank you again so much for everything. I've made the change on 6 of the 11 machines I've upgraded. They are all working fine. Maybe this will help with the issue. I use cups-pdf a lot. If you selected cup-pdf and printed a document before making the change (like last week), it also had the cream color background. I printed one off this morning that I created last Friday. It printed with the cream color which means the cream color was also created in cups-pdf. I created a new pdf this morning of the same document with cups-pdf, and then printed the document on the K5400, and it is fine. Nice, white, background!!! If I can do any testing or be of additional assistance, please let me know. Thank you again so very, very, very much for all of your help!! Don On 05/18/2010 08:22 AM, vxxzy wrote: When the updates are run it 'should' fix the issue; however it may be best to keep watch on what is being updated. If you see an update for ghostscript, pstopdf, cups, lpr, etc... (basically updates that deal with printing) you may want to restore that file from the backup you created and then run the update. (This may or may not be necessary, but this is the safest bet.) Or just update your system on a regular basis (as you have) and eventually restore the backup and see if the issue is fixed. From the testing I have done for the past week now; everything seems to be going great with the fix I have implemented on my test machine. I was glad to have helped you. No problem. My concern is that parted v 2.2 (included in Lucid) states this capability, and that some user will have a botched installation on a 4K sector HD or SSD. I have installed or upgraded 15 systems since 10.04 was released. All 32 bit versions. Most were upgrades from 9.10. In almost all instances when an upgrade was done, after the installation was finished and the machine rebooted, cups was not running. Some of these machines have not been a problem after that. Several continue to be a major issue. One of those is a co-worker's computer. Several times has said to me about wiping of his Ubuntu and his just going back to Windows. I'm dragging my feet as much as possible in the hope that this gets fixed. -- cups not starting at boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/554172 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 554172] Re: cups not starting at boot
Thank you Garry. I think Linux Mint 9 is based on either Ubuntu 9.04 or 9.10. I never saw this issue come up until 10.04. On 06/10/2010 06:01 PM, Garry Roseman wrote: I converted two systems that had this problem to an Ubuntu 10.04 derivative, Linux Mint 9, and both systems work perfectly. This could provide a clue to the source of the problem, and could provide an emergency solution to people like Don who are in a tough situation and must have a working Ubuntu-like system immediately. BTW, the main menu in Linux Mint would probably feel very familiar to Windows users. It's a very pleasant system (and of course steals shamelessly from all of the work done in creating Ubuntu). It does not come with Ubuntu One or the Ubuntu Music Store plugin pre-installed. [Bug 583911] [NEW] bad flag alias index bad flag vector alias errors
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gedit This problem most probably is not only related to gedit but I noticed it in gedit first. When running gedit from the terminal the following errors floods the terminal while the applications hangs: error: line xx: bad flag alias index: 0 error: line xx: bad flag vector alias The file is still saved after these errors but the period of non-responsiveness is annoying. [Bug 501956] Re: OpenSSH does not log failed attempts when key authentication is used
To summarize: LogLevel INFO RSAAuthentication yes PubkeyAuthentication yes HostbasedAthentication no ChallengeResponseAuthentication no PasswordAuthentication no AllowUsers lukeskywalker [1] The decision to log the error is made in procedure auth_log in auth.c: /* Raise logging level */ if (authenticated == 1 || !authctxt-valid || authctxt-failures = options.max_authtries / 2 || strcmp(method, password) == 0) authlog = logit; When account exists but does not have a trusted pubkey on the server the variables have the following values: auth_log decision has the following values: authenticated . 0 authctxt-valid ... 1 authctxt-failures 0 options.max_authtries . 6 method publickey Which translates to: if (0 == 1 || ! 1 || 0 = 6 / 2 || 1 == 0) authlog = logit; So authlog cannot escalate to the logit function (nothing in auth.log) I suggest ADDING the following change between /* Raise logging level */ and the start of the if statement that immediately followed it: if (!authenticated authctxt--valid strcmp(method, publickey) == 0) authlog = logit; There seems to be an alternative train of thought from the 2005 portable bug associated with this report. [Bug 501956] Re: OpenSSH does not log failed attempts when key authentication is used
auth_log in auth.c is not changing the error logging function from authlog to logit for this type of error (line 258). If you use sshd start -dd you will get the failed attempt clearly on the screen but NOT in auth.log. NB. Setting LogLevel to VERBOSE does show the failed attempts quite well I think: This account does not exist: Feb 16 00:17:18 nono sshd[18101]: Connection from 192.168.0.247 port 36732 Feb 16 00:17:19 nono sshd[18101]: Invalid user r2 from 192.0.168.247 This account exists on the server but does not have a publickey: Feb 16 00:17:24 nono sshd[18103]: Connection from 192.168.0.247 port 36733 Feb 16 00:17:24 nono sshd[18103]: Failed publickey for ob1 from 192.168.0.247 port 36733 ssh2 Also note that specifically denying users through the various allow/deny/user/group methods in sshd_config has an effect on the error logged as well. However I agree that the 2nd line of the two should be logged as INFO. Will continue tomorrow... [Bug 511019] [NEW] Neither Sun Java Plugin or Iced Tea Java plugin works - 3.5.8pre and 3.6pre
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: firefox I've been running the Firefox and Thunderbird daily builds since Thunderbird 3.0 came out on Ubuntu 9.10. I have Sun Java 6-15-1 installed. I had no problems until last night with Java not working in Firefox 3.5 working. There was an Ubuntu security update installed last night and also updates to Firefox. After the update I saw Java wasn't working in Firefox 3.5.8pre. It was too late to play with it. Today my work computer had security updates and also Firefox updates which took Firefox to 3.6pre. I lost Java in Firefox in that machine also. When a site requiring Java is loaded, Firefox says there are missing plugins. Clicking on the notification suggests the Iced Tea or the Sun Java plugins. If I click on the Sun plugin, it tells me it is already installed. I've tried relaoding the page. Closing the browser and reopening the page, completely uninstalling Java and reinstalling it, with complete shutdowns in the process. And completely uninstalling Firefox and Java, doing a complete shutdown, then reinstalling Firefox, and then reinstalling the plugin through the Firefox missing plugin links, but the plugin will still not work. If you try to install it again after that, it still says it is installed. [Bug 511019] Re: Neither Sun Java Plugin or Iced Tea Java plugin works - 3.5.8pre and 3.6pre
Additional Information: I found this in Ubuntuzilla today: ~ Java plugin not showing up (on Ubuntu Karmic) If the Java plugin is not showing up, this is due to a bug in sun-java6-plugin package on Ubuntu Karmic. To fix this, run the following command (copy and paste the entire line into a terminal, and press enter): sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin.so mozilla-javaplugin.so /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so 50 This will place the appropriate link to the java plugin into /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins. Restart your browser to detect the plugin. ~ This does take care of the issue, but While Java now works in Firefox 3.6.1pre and also the 3.6 from the Ubuntuzilla repository, as soon as I scroll down on any of the pages in this site: http://www.cbur-ruralproperty.com small to large white blocks appear. This never happened before my initial post that Java wasn't working. It worked very well in all versions of 3.0 and 3.5. No white blocks at all. I would assume it is a Firefox 3.6 issue. I am the webmaster of this site, so I am very aware of how it looks and if something changes in how it displays. Thank you for your consideration of this issue. Hi John, I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed on my 4 computers, on a co-workers computer, my wife's computer, as well as 8 others of folks who were willing to give Ubuntu a try. On my main desktops(2) and on my backup desktop, with either the daily build repositories builds 3.6pre or 3.6.1pre, or the present 3.6 from Ubuntuzilla through the Ubuntu Software Center (Ubuntuzilla), I needed to do sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin.so mozilla- javaplugin.so /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so 50 to make the java plugin work. Once it works, as soon as I scroll down the page, I have the white blank spaces show up on the page as shown in the attachment below. I will attach two more in posts to show what happens as you scroll further down, or back up. I updated my co-workers computer today to the daily build of 3.6.1pre and had to install the link to make the plug in work, and his had the same white blanks showing up. This never occurred in the daily builds prior to the very last daily updates to 3.5.8pre, or to the the regular 3.5. My wife has the latest from the regular Ubuntu updates, which 3.5.4, and it works just fine. My laptop has an early 3.5.8pre before the last daily updates to it, and it works fine.
