Re: [Unattended] Question

2013-04-25 Thread Ben Greenfield
You need to make an new install from the dell disks that shipped with the 7010
the motherboard/devices are different enough that the original install doesn't
work with it.

I had different models grab different boot devices based on mac address
filtering.

Good luck,

Ben

There are 2 methods to fix your issue. One is to build using
debian/ubuntu and the other on is to add those drivers without building it.

Just check the page and let us know if that works for you.

I am testing right now to build using 3.4.4 and applying some patches

 Hi there,

I just have a question regarding the license of Unattended.

We are currently developing an application which allows us to
perform installations for Linux/BSD and Windows over a
 network, using PXE.
This is being coupled with a web-based interface, as well as
XML features to automate all of this.

Initially this will only be used in-house. If everything
works well, we are considering to sell this as a commercial
product. Now the thing is that we are planning to use
Unattended for the installations of Windows servers. Now my
question is; is it permitted to distribute our commercial
application with Unattended integrated into it?

AFAIK:
You're allowed to distribute it with/as an commercial product.
BUT you have to open your sources for everyone who's interested.
That means, that you could more or less sell your support, not the software
itself.

Linksys also _had_ to open their linux-sources because they're using
Linux on their routers.

 Thank you.

 Andre

[Unattended] Question about partitioning with 4.7

2007-12-19 Thread Jens Geile
Hi,

so far I've been happy with having just one partition on my drive but now
customers are bugging me if it is somewho possible to create two partions of
the same size on one drive. For example on a 120GB drive there should be C:
with 60GB and D: with 60GB. Of course I could just use fixed values but since
not all machines have harddisks of the same size (replaced with a different,
bigger one because the old one was broken/a whole other type of computer with
smaller drives/..) I was wondering if it was somehow possible to use
percentages (50%|50% (or any other combination)) in fdisk_cmds.
Any ideas or even better: working examples? ;)

Thanks in advance,

-

[Unattended] Question about the Boot Disks

2007-10-25 Thread Mullaley, Patrick S (Pat)
I am brand new to this, and I realize that netbooting has been done for
decades (Solaris at least). I am trying to build a Linux (Ubuntu) box
that can house a few boot images and configure the machines after a
fresh install. I want to have this all done over a network, using the
PXE boot option. I have 23089743 questions, but I would like to start
with the obvious first and then move into the more mundane.

1) Where / How do I build a Windows XP boot image? Is it just a bootable
ISO image? If so, do I place an 'unattend.cfg' file in there too so it
answers all the groovy install questions?

2) Are there actions available after the last boot to trigger variances
in the installation, like IP addressing, hostname, etc. or would I need
a different 'image' for each variant?

That should get me really scratching my head.

Thanks in Advance,

Patrick

Yes, but you have to parse that argument manually. See GetOptions

To me it's clear that I#m able to edit
the [_meta] section in unattended.txt.
But I want to have the choice during

editing the [_meta] section)

I'm using the unattended 4.6 on a linux

As I could remember on the 4.4 the was
a choice for the partitioning. Is it possible to include this in 4.6?

Christian,

The way that I did it was to install NTFS Link
(http://www.elsdoerfer.info/ntfslink/) on the Windows box that was providing
the unattended share, and create a junction to an $OEM$ folder stored
elsewhere in the folder tree. This meant that I had one $OEM$ folder to keep
updated, and all the install points were updated. It also avoids having to
mess around with Windows files, so that if a SP update changed the file...

Under *nix, you can do this by creating hard links (ln target source)
instead of symbolic links, and all should be fine.

Hey there!

I like th concept of your program... I think it's great. However, I have one minor question... Is there any Live CD distribution that has your program on it? I would think that there would be a great use for a live-cd that would pretty much do everything for you, and all you would have to do is prepare the windows intstall.

Does something like that exist... Or would that be something that a community project would be interasted in?

My script is effectively a shell script reading the TFTP log file. If it
sees a sucessful transfer to an IP, it converts that IP to a hex, and then
does an unlink of that hex file in the config directory.

I think it would be fairly easy to add a counter. Right now the script
doesn't keep any state at all.

I guess it would depend of what TFTP server/service you are using.

[Unattended] question about freedos bootdisk image

2005-09-26 Thread Thomas Seeling

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hallo,

from reading the list in the last few days I learnt
that the dos bootdisks are deemed deprecated.
Anyway, is anyone still using them?
I think they are much more convenient to customize
when compared to the linux boot disks and their
uncountable ;) prerequisites (with specific versions ...).

I have a strange problem where the bootdisk (real floppy) works fine,
but as soon as I make an image from this disk and use this
as my own empty-bootdisk.img for PXE booting, it stops working.
The symptom is that the config.sys is not used, i.e.
himem.sys and ifshlp.sys are not loaded.
No matter if I call the file config.sys or fdconfig.sys,
use plain msdos syntax or advanced freedos syntax ... it fails.
I added a minimalistic german keyboard driver (from 1991 c't),
and I can devload the ifshlp.sys, but then I don't have enough
memory to execute perl and spawned programs like fdisk.
devload.com hangs on loading himem.sys ;(
I even tried with original msdos 5, but this could not execute
perl at all.

A related question: if the primary boot option is PXE boot,
how do I prevent an infinite loop? Currently linuxboot-4.6
gets booted by PXE, WXP setup.exe configures the disk,
but even on the 2nd run it does not recognize that
the disk is already formatted and WXP waits to get booted
to continue the windows configuration.
Can I rename the tftpboot config file (the 32bit hex-IP filename)
somehow during or after the first run, so that the default file
can have localboot as 1st option?
Can PXE boot look at the hard disk and decide it's worth booting?
While playing with unattended I created a file C0A86420 manually
(for 192.168.100.32, my test machine) with localboot option
(and this works), but I'd like to have even this one automated ;).

Thanks in advance!

Yes,
you probably missed to install cygwin since "make" is a linux command not
provided by unattended. So you have to install cygwin to get your minilinux
inside your windows.
Start
the cygwin shell and there type your make whatever.

  In the bootdisk directory,

  Typing make

This does not work since there is no "make" file

Why not just use the binaries and install it manually? It's very easy
to do. I've been using those without any problems for a while on
OpenBSD and Solaris servers.

http://download.sourceforge.net/unattended/unattended-4.6-linuxboot.zip

Just copy everything from the unattended-4.6/linuxboot/tftpboot
directory to your server's tftp directory. Then just copy over the
pxelinux.0 from here:

http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/boot/syslinux/syslinux-3.09.zip

If you want a cd image, just use
unattended-4.6/linuxboot/linuxboot.iso. Also, if you want a floppy or
cdrom you can use one from Etherboot: http://rom-o-matic.net/5.4.0/

/bin/bash: line 1: mcopy: command not found

That's part of mtools. I'm not sure if that works under Cygwin.

BTW, the lack of a Reply-To on the mailing list is very annoying.

[Unattended] Question

2005-06-22 Thread Hansen, Brian
Title: Question

I am trying to test this application for an unattended install of Windows 2003. When trying to use the network boot procedure I follow this step:

In the bootdisk directory, typing make images will generate the floppy disk images. Typing make iso will create the ISO image. Typing make tftpboot will populate the tftpbootdirectory. And simply typing make will do all these.

This does not work since there is no make file anywhere in the distribution. The unattended server is Windows 2000. Is there something else im missing or need to have installed to make this work?

Thanks,

Brian

Make is a linux only command, either install cygwin on the server or
follow this how-to for Windows systems to get it done without the need
of non-native windows commands:

Hi,

I'm not sure if I understood. But if you only want to get other options in
the menu where to choose sales/developer/Base installation. You can just
copy the base.bat to a new one and edit this file. Or just create a new
batch file. Beware of the first line!

 Hi Michael!

I'm sorry if I intruded on your e-mail.

That would be okay I you wrote to the unattended-info list. I've
bounced your mail to that list and answer it there so other people
can answer too or benefit from the answers.

  However, I
have pretty much automated the script but I have come
to one menu that I really cannot explain. When the
user is prompted for a sales/developer/Base kind of
computer, how can I edit this menu to better fit my
Batch files I have created for various group of
  people.

 You can use a self-written config.pl.

There you can implement a user-defined menu where you can select the
 type of computer etc.

(My favorite computer hard- and software dealer www.b-c-s.de are
doing that - maybe I can ask them to share their script and I put
parts of it to the example page in our documentation)

My preferred way is to use a database. Please have a look at sample-
config.pl in the /install/site directory. Jeffrey C Albo posted a
documentation for that a couple days ago on the devel-list.[*]

With a database you are not answering ANY question ... nice, isn't
 it?

 Niels

[*] I promised to put that into the documentation. Unfortunately, I
had a bike accident and was in hospital a couple of days. So, please,
 have some patient with me.

Re: [Unattended] question

2005-05-02 Thread Edmundo Valle Neto
I don´t understood what make a PXE server has to do with the project,
but yes it can be used with one, I boot trough a DOS floppy image
supplied by a PXE service (dhcp3-server + tftpd-hpa + syslinux)
configured in a linux server. How do you get your unattended share
mapped to Z doesn't really matter and the project doesn´t show all the
possible ways. You can even boot trough a CDROM or floppy with ROM
images to get the images of the PXE server if your network card doesn´t
allow to do that directly.

I have the middle key word in my unattended file and it does not cause
these questions to be answered automatically. It still asks me what I
want to install and then at the end of the install it runs the middle

SP4 (on w2k install) it reboots then logs in and does nothing more, when
I terminal service into the box it starts running the

Yes, by setting the [_meta]/middle key. This is documented (briefly) in
http://unattended.sourceforge.net/advanced.html.

I'm still having trouble getting the NIC card configs working right,
it seems to be ignoring anything I put in the unattended file for NIC

OK, as far as it goes, but where are your [params.Adapter0],

Without those sections, Setup has no way of knowing which adapter is
Adapter0, which is Adapter1, and which is Adapter2. You can
either identify them by PCI location or by PCI vendor/device ID plus MAC
address. See

 hi,
 i got a few question:
 1. How could i change the install.pl (i dont have any clue about perl)
to part the harddisk half c and other half d, automatically?

First you ask about it publicly, embarrassing me into doing something.

Next, download a new install.pl from
http://unattended.sourceforge.net/testing/ and copy it to Z:\dosbin.
You will find a new menu option to use a 50/50 split for C:/D:.

 2. How could i give MS Office 2000 the Product key? i only got the
update version, so normally i have to copy word97.exe on c: for the
update to find an old version, but with unattended it wasnt
nessesary, only key and Workgroup Samples folder (please excuse my
bad english, i hope you know what i mean) for Word is needed in my
 case

In later versions of Office, you can add PIDKEY=... to the msiexec
command line, where ... is your product key with all hyphens
deleted. I do not know whether this works for Office 2000.

 3. is the only way to integrate drivers to copy them in the os
folder an then choose the needed subdirs? do i have to know every
hardware part from my computer and find all the driver .inf files?
 thx for every help

I usually just add them all, or almost all, because most drivers are
only loaded for the hardware they actually drive. (The .inf file
specifies PCI vendor/device/subvendor/subdevice ID numbers.)

The exception I found was a touchpad driver which always put a stupid
icon in the system tray even on machines with no touchpad. So I have
to un-select that one by hand.
