Re: Incorrect page numbering on PDF export (Win11)

2024-04-12 Thread Dr. Martin Senftleben

Hi,

I can confirm it. I have however used LibreOffice in Linux to convert
the document. Which I would guess points at a problem within the
document and not with OpenOffice.
My guess would be that some settings for those tabs have been altered,
maybe accidentally, which cause these results. I don't have much time to
dig deeper into it, I only looked at settings in printer area, which I
usually never use, and saw that these are set (i.e. someone entered them
manually). The cause for the problem may be related to this, but I am
not sure.

- "BILAGA III" (numbering erroneously indicates 4 when it should be 3)
- "BILAGA X" (page number starts at 2 and number of pages indicates 8
when it should be starting at 1 and up to page 7)

Can you reproduce this issue if you open the ODS file and do a PDF export?

You can hide your confidential data using Edit > Find and Replace.
Make sure the 'Regular expressions' box is checked, enter [a-z] in
the Find field, and enter x in the Replace field. If you then click
on Replace All, every lower-case letter will be replaced by x.
Similarly, you can use [0-9] to replace all digits by something.

I don't know what the policy is here for attachments. If they're
allowed, there may be a maximum size.

*Subject:* Incorrect page numbering on PDF export (Win11)
Dear OpenOffice Support,

I have a OpenCalc file that contains several tabs that when I export
as PDF
(landscape A4) some of the page numbers (done seperately per tab) are
incorrect in the resulting PDF. For example, one the exported tabs skips
page 1 and starts at page 2. Another tab has correct page numbering
but the
total number of pages in that tab is incorrect (i.e. displays 1 of
8, 2 of
8, etc. when it should be 1 of 7, 2 of 7).

Due to the confidential nature of the data, I will not attach the
OpenCalc
file in question to reproduce this issue for the entire user group.
I can,
on the other hand, send it to someone who is internally involved in
bugfixing/reproducing issues. Thanks for your time.

Best, Robert

What is the best way to send people a copy of my book, and they can only

I would not dismiss the option to create images and from that creating a
pdf, which is not editable. There is open source software which can do
that quite easily, I think e.g. of gscan2pdf. You need a scanner,
preferably with an ADF, then you can put the printed paper into the
scanner and gscan2pdf scans all pages for you and creates the pdf when
saving. You can disable the OCR option, but that wouldn't make it
editable anyway. If OCR is on, the document becomes searchable, which
may be helpful.

corrupted database

2023-06-13 Thread Dr. Martin Senftleben

Hi,

recently, OO 4.1.14 crashed on my Manjaro Linux system while a database
was open with some changes not yet saved. Consequently, the database
could not be repaired by the built-in recovery tool. I found the following:

1. The tables seem all to be in order (I can open them)
2. There are some forms which have either a corrupted styles.xml or
content.xml file. If I open those forms, The database causes OO to
crash. The size of the files is 0 bytes.
3. There are some reports in which either styles.xml, settings.xml or
content.xml are corrupted. Some show 0 bytes, others have a few kB size.
Those have no clear text but some strange characters like

ÂPÐ_{

(that's only a very short excerpt).

My idea is, since I have older copies of the database where the same
forms and reports are included, to copy the files from those older
copies in order to replace the corrupted ones. Is this a possible
approach? I would, of course, have to re-zip the file after this. Or is
it better to remove the corrupted files (or rather forms and reports)
and redo them? I'm not sure if that would work, in case there is
somewhere a list of forms and reports which contains the then missing
ones and would complain or again cause OO to crash.

In case someone wants to suggest to send the database to him or her for
repair, I must decline, because the database contains highly sensitve
data and I would commit a criminal offense if I hand over the file to a
strange person.

Martin

Re: Open Office becoming impossible to use- bug ridden

2023-06-04 Thread Dr. Martin Senftleben
I don't know if you received any reply, I haven't seen any on the list.
To clarify, I have one question: Do you by any chance use Base as well,
i.e. do you have a database open when working on the other documents? If
so, you need to make sure that changes to the database (e.g. forms or
fields changes) are being saved, else this may lead to a tremendous lag.
Saving the database is different from changing changes to the contents
of a field. You have to go to the general database window and choose
save from the menu (or click on the save icon).
Beyond that, I have not experienced such issues, but I am using Linux
and not Windows.
In any case: if there is malware involved, it hasn't come from
OpenOffice, at least not from the package, if you installed it from the
official website. There are many ways malware can become active on your
PC, mostly it's via an email, but it can also be via a document (macros)
etc.. If Malware causes the problems, it's most likely not helpful to
reinstall OpenOffice, but you should then use a good virus and malware
scanner to identify and remove it.

Martin

causing this or it has been hacked and malware inserted or what. Perhaps I will
erase my copy and import a new one to see if that helps anything.

Since attaching the image didn't work out, here is a link to the image:

I hope this gives a clue. As already mentioned: no other app shows this

system wide problem. It affects AOO exclusively.

In the dialog which can be seen in the image, I tried already a number

I am not sure the Aoo window's font is all that under AOO's control. I
believe AOO picks up whatever the system or desktop is defining, using

settings.

I tried that already, no changes. AOO is the only software that shows
this kind of behaviour, that's why I suspect AOO to be responsible. Else
I would certainly have installed another theme in order to make the
menus more readable.
The fact that this problem does not occur for other users (I guess) may
point in a different direction, though.
I do not think that KDE would change these settings only for AOO, though
I don't know if that would be possible. I as the user should be the one
who changes that, but I didn't, this I know for sure.

That said, one area I would suggest to look at, under Tools >
Options > View, there are some styles and font options to look into.
Especially, the "Use system font for user interface" option. Mine is
checked.

Mine was checked and unchecked and didn't cause any changes.

something like this may happen when upgrading while OpenOffice (OO) is

guess there is some entry in the registry which indicates that OO is
already open, which causes this kind of error message. There may also be
some kind of mixup with the admin account (IIRC, later Windows versions
allow installation of some programs only as admin). Then you would have
to log in as admin and look for some indication of an open OO.

I hope this helps. Maybe someone else who uses Windows can give more info.

Appearance

2022-12-08 Thread Dr. Martin Senftleben

Hi,

I have a long history with OpenOffice (I started actually with
StarWriter), and at some point of time I switched to LibreOffice (I
think many did), but there it seems that they introduce new features too
quickly, because with them, new bugs come in and make it quite difficult
to use. Since I do not need most of the new features, I have decided to
go back to OpenOffice, and it seems to work quite well in spite of the
fact, that most of my documents had been treated by LibreOffice for a
long time. Even an extensively used database seems to work fine.

Now, I have a simple yet important problem: The appearance of OO is
strange. While most of it (icons etc.) are ok, the text in the menus and
dialog boxes is not black, but grey and hence difficult to read
(background also grey), particularly for a person who has some
sight-problems like me. On screenshots I always see that the menu text
is black, which I would prefer. I haven't found any place where I can
set it. There is an "appearance" item in the options tool, but that
doesn't seem to have any effect. There is an option in the General
section for font color, but the combobox next to it says "automatic" and
the colorbox besides that is black, so I would think that text is
selected as black. Probably this section does not apply to the overall
appearance of OO. There is a scheme selector, but only the OpenOffice
scheme is selectable.
Any ideas how I can change that? Other apps have all the proper font
color (black).

Martin
