Re: Complaint: "buggy implementations"

2020-10-25 Thread Hagar Delest

Le 24/10/2020 à 21:38, William Lee Valentine a écrit :

In response to Mr. Olsson's recent complaint about combining graphics
with text in Writer: my documentation for Writer (distinct from that
provided with OpenOffice) indicates that, when one wants a picture to
appear in one of Writer's documents, one should click on "Insert >
Picture > From file", then select the graphic from the listing displayed
for a given directory, then click on "Open", and the graphic will appear
(at the cursor position?) in the given document.

This seems straightforward. I do not understand why Mr. Olsson would
find this disconcerting or difficult.
I fully understand Mr. Olsson's complaint. In the Forum, we are indeed
used to advise saving any picture to be embedded in AOO on the HD first
and then to insert it with the relevant menu.

However, this is not a very good user experience.
Why the user should not expect a copy-paste to carry over a picture as
it is?
Very often when I copy a pic from another application, it appears fine
and then after a short while (few seconds or a save operation), it is
replaced by a placeholder.
If AOO manages to display the pic in the first place, then why should it
lose it afterward?
Why AOO can't make a copy of the pic in the temporary files to prevent
any loss? Why can't it accomplish what the user has to do, that is, save
the file in its original format and insert it?
Note that I never filed a bug report for that. First because there
already too many reports for too few coders and second because I often
adjust the pic before actually inserting it in the document.
But still, many users expect a copy-paste to behave as a very trivial
operation.

In his reply, Martin Groensheij indicates that "the most reliable way
is to insert [the graphic] in a frame." I assume that the frame helps
because it fixes the position of the graphic within the document's
borders.

My question is: does Writer's documentation indicate that it is
preferable to insert graphics within frames?

-- William Lee Valentine
Personally, I only anchor pics As character, it is clearly the most
robust anchoring. And I use tables if I need to have pics side by side
and/or add a caption.

Frames have always been tricky when it comes to resizing a pic inside.

Aha! But this problem is not a matter of "the spell checker doesn't
work", so we don't know - indeed you don't know - that this is what
the original questioner is experiencing. And you didn't indicate that
this different problem - that spelling checking works until you
mishandle your computer but then doesn't - is what you were talking about.

What makes you think that the user mishandled his computer?
This has been a recurring issue in the forum as well. I can't believe
that all these users do mishandle their computer.

Deleting the this folder and then running OOo corrects this as you
already know. LibreOffice has learned how to avoid this. Since these
two office programs are very similar, I would think that the solution
would be to apply the same solution.

Yes, I agree that this later problem should be prevented, but we
should not give users generally the untrue idea that "the spell
checker doesn't work". Meanwhile we should encourage them into the
good practice that avoids it anyway.

What kind of best practice do you have in mind?

There IS an issue somewhere. I do not doubt that this is a weird issue
but it happens, period. If LO has fixed the problem, then they may have
found something, then there may be something to be found.

Re: French judges using OpenOffice - need help create a document template with "fields"

2020-09-08 Thread Hagar Delest

I used to use it a little bit in the past.
The trick is that the wording is rather confusing. Actually:
To create the field to be edited: Insert → Fields → Other → Variables →
Type=User field → Format=Text → Name=Give_it_a_name →
Value=what_you_want, then click Insert.
To insert the field in several places in the document: Insert → Fields →
Other → Variables → Type=Input field → Selection=The_field
created_previously → Reference=Don't_know_what_it_is_for → Insert. Do
that as many time you need the field to be repeated. It can be pasted also.

To edit the content of the field, double-click the first instance of
User field inserted.

If you need the field to be edited wherever in the document (all
instances will be updated at once), then only insert the same User field
in multiple places.

Don't know what the Reference field is really for in those dialogs (adds
a title to the input dialog but what's the point?).
When inserting the Input field, a dialog appears but it occurs only at
this time (you can change the value of the field or leave it as it is).
Double-clicking it afterwards does nothing at all.

Sorry for the late reply. Forgot to check the ML sooner.
I tried to lower the security settings but no change.
Will do with that for the moment, kind of too much a hassle to get an
old version to test on a corporate machine.

Thanks anyway!

This might be a side effect of a security fix done in 4.1.2. Things
you can do to verify this include: setting the security level
(confusingly called "Macro security level" in our UI) to the most
permissive option; or checking (just for testing purposes) with 4.1.1
and see if it behaves the way you expect.

Hi,

Beware, you're not subscribed to the list, you've missed some other replies
(you can check them in the web-based mail archives however).

But basically, the message is: you're out of luck.
What would be the point of a password if it were that simple to crack it?

The only way is to try brute force cracking but it will take you too much time
I guess.
If you can't try the multiple possibilities you can remember, then consider
your file lost.

In the days of the OOo users mailing list this filter worked, plus the
OOo list management software had the facility to add [MODERATED] to the
subject line, making it very easy to identify and/or filter
non-subscribed posts.

The filter no longer works for clients such as Thunderbird, because they
only detect the first "Delivered-To:" header tag and the ezmlm software
used by AOO places the "Delivered-To: moderator" tag 3rd. or 4th. in the
list:

Delivered-To:
Delivered-To: apmail-
Delivered-To: mailing list users@openoffice.apache.org
Delivered-To: moderator for users@openoffice.apache.org

For unspecified reasons some members of the PMC have repeatedly resisted
my proposal for a small change in ezmlm software to reinstate the
[MODERATED] flag in the subject line.

Dave

I use TB 60.2.1 (64 bits) on Xubuntu and the filter does work (version from the
distro).

The situation is the same with and without preload. And even without

Re: problem with text file

Hi,

To be clear, there is absolutely no way to recover your file as it is.
At best, you can try to recover something from the temporary files, see:
https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=74=84056
Have you made sure there was no back-up in the profile (if you had the option
Always create a backup copy checked in the options)?

Very often, it is linked to power shortage during the save operation.

Trying to remember which will get me flamed less, top posting or bottom posting
.

Lets start with (2) because it is the easiest to answer.

So, the answer is, I have no idea, it depends on what object Target is.

Is this a Cell? A Range?

If this is a SheetRange, then you should be able to use
"Target.RangeAddress.StartColumn". If this is already a Range address, then you should be
able to use "Target.StartColumn".

I know this is not a cell address, or Column would already work. Does it work if you use
"Target.getCellAddress().Column"?

Sadly, you probably need to fix (1) before looking at (2).

Question (1) is more difficult because you want to perform a search.

I assume from the name that rng is a sheet range, Sadly, searching in AOO is
much more difficult than in Excel (using macros).

If you comment out the offending lines, does it complain if you use something
like:

rng.CreateSearchDescriptor()

If that does not cause a failure, then you have a sheet cell range and you can
create a search descriptor. I hvae no idea about the use of Lookat or LookIn.

Here are some of the properties that are probably supported by your search
descriptor.

STRING ImplementationName = ScCellSearchObj
STRING ReplaceString =
BOOL SearchBackwards = False
BOOL SearchByRow = False
BOOL SearchCaseSensitive = False
BOOL SearchRegularExpression = False
BOOL SearchSimilarity = False
INTEGER SearchSimilarityAdd = 2
INTEGER SearchSimilarityExchange = 2
BOOL SearchSimilarityRelax = False
INTEGER SearchSimilarityRemove = 2
STRING SearchString =
BOOL SearchStyles = False
INTEGER SearchType = 0
BOOL SearchWildcard = False
BOOL SearchWords = False

I am guessing that this does a row based search, so you might begin with
something like:

Dim oSearchDescriptor
oSearchDescriptor = rng.CreateSearchDescriptor()
oSearchDescriptor.SearchByRow = true

Your macro searches in the direction last used (or so it seems), if not, it
seems that you can probably set SearchBackwards to true or false depending on
the direction that you want.

Beyond that I am only guessing. Is this looking for the text "*"? I have no
idea what your second parameter does there.

If you can fill out the search descriptor, you will probably need to use
something like this totally untested

  Dim oFound
  oFound = rng.findFirst(oDescriptor)
  Do While Not IsNull(oFound)
' Do something with the oFound object
' Off hand, it looks like you really only need to find the first thing
' and then use it for something. Maybe you really just need to find the
last one, I can only guess.
' I am really guessing on this next line.
oFound = rng.findNext(oFound, oDescriptor)
  Loop

I thought that there was also an ISO/IEC 29500 Provisional, but right

That is 13 different file formats, each with their own mutually

Apache OpenOffice could save to ISO 29500 strict, but the price for that
would be guaranteed incompatibility with Microsoft Office, because MSO

It can happen that an installation of OpenOffice "out-of-the-box" produces a
corrupt user profile, which can cause instability. The cure for this is to delete or
rename the old user profile; OO will then generate a new profile on next startup.

Details of the User Profile for various operating systems
are given in

https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/v ... 74=12426

If you are using Windows close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Open File
Explorer. Copy and paste %appdata%\OpenOffice\4 in the File Explorer
Address Bar and press Enter. Rename the "user" folder - "user.old" is a
good choice. Start OpenOffice.

If that does not improve stability, start Windows in Safe Mode. If OO runs
stable in Windows safe mode the culprit is some program or driver that runs in
Windows normal mode, which program or driver is interfering with OpenOffice.
Common culprits are Skype, Anti virus, continuous backup programs ad utilities
which monitor the Clipboard. To locate the culprit needs systematic detective
work on the affected computer.

This cures most spellcheck problems

It can sometimes happen that an installation produces a faulty user
profile "out of the box". The above fix works in the vast majority of cases.
To prevent this happening again, be leisurely in your closing down of the
computer after properly closing your OO file and OO. Use the formal computer
closedown procedure and wait for a few seconds to be certain all disk activity
has ceased - damage to the spellchecker often occurs if the computer is powered
down before the hardware/software write buffers have flushed. The few extra
seconds will be less than the time needed to correct the problem, or, more
likely, to rebuild a damaged file which can also occur through such over-hasty
shutdown.

Hi,

To be clear, there is absolutely no way to recover your file as it is.
At best, you can try to recover something from the temporary files, see:

Have you made sure there was no back-up in the profile (if you had the option
Always create a backup copy checked in the options)?

Very often, it is linked to power shortage during the save operation.

Well, I think that it clearly tells how this discussion has evolved.
No need to further feed the troll.
docx and OOXML is a recurrent hot topic. I think that it has been clearly

If some want to think otherwise and express that, they should just remember

(just tried on xubuntu 16.10 and AOO 4.1.3):
https://forum.openoffice.org/fr/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18=18566=241115#p241115

Should not be that difficult to find out how it works even for non-French users.
There are screenshots in the topic (before the post linked above).
Preferences can be accessed by Tools > Add-Ons > Prefs Sauvegarde++ 2.1
There is a toolbar that should appear once installed.

Lost a valuable info file? You only have to lose your royal ass once to be

Rename a file being revised by including today's date in the filename,

suffix.
Never fail to rename a file when you change it.
The "downside" is using disk space but you can later delete older

something goes wrong, you won't lose your changes.

You mean just like OpenOffice does? See Tools | Options... | Load/Save |
General | Save | Save AutoRecovery Information every ... Minutes.

However, it does not prevent the loss with the pound sign.
In the dozens of cases I've seen in the forums for example, the AutoRecovery
feature has never been of any help.
Are the temporary files deleted before the final file is actually written? That
would be a something to think again.

Another feature it has, when a file is changed, it automatically creates a
backup, so even if the scratch file gets corrupted, the original isn't wiped
out.

You mean just like OpenOffice does? See Tools | Options... | Load/Save |
General | Save | Always create a backup copy, as well as Tools | Options... |
OpenOffice | Paths | Backups.

However, this feature is not activated by default. I can understand there is a
rationale behind that. Maybe for confidentiality since it leaves a copy of the
file in the user profile without the user knowing it automatically.
And again, it has never helped.

These are simple things to implement, and with millions of OO users, would save
a lot of people a lot of grief.

They would - and they already do! You can implement things, but you cannot
force people to learn about the software - to read the help text or the
documentation or to experiment with settings so that they actually know the
facilities are there.

You cannot expect users to learn software in fear that it destroys their file.
OK, there are safety measures to be taken for general purpose (HD crash, OS
crash, virus, ...). But the way AOO behaves in such case is quite nasty: not
only you lose the version you've just worked on but you lose the original file
also, thus you lose everything concerning that file.
I've never experienced this issue myself (using OOo/AOO since 2006 on a daily
basis) but if I were to lose a file this way, I would seriously reconsider.

A feature to protect user files could be added in less time than has been spent
chastising users for not learning how to do backups.

I'm sure implementing the facilities actually took far longer than it took you
to complain - falsely - that they are not there, in fact. But it was done
nevertheless. And you cannot write into an application such as OpenOffice total
protection against user error, hardware faults, or operating system glitches.

Well, could a dev explain what is the save process? I know this is the users
list but I've raised this problem in the past on the dev ML and nothing came
out of it.
I think this started to occur with OOo 2.3 or something like that, I remember
having seen such problems suddenly. It may be linked to a code change at some
point.

You don't help others by broadcasting false information: you merely show your
unfamiliarity with the product.

In my case, I think I can say that I know the product.
And I've to admit that this issue is really troublesome.

For the record if you want to see the list of the cases I've recorded:

Consequently, I can neither log into the forum under my current email address,
cannot retrieve my password with my current email address or create as new

me wonder how many people would like to be using the forum but cannot becasue
they cannot find anyone to contact in order to get the help needed.

Can someone there please do something so I can get into the forum?

Thank you.

Re: location of icons

2016-10-11 Thread Hagar Delest

In xfce (I use xubuntu), the icon chooser has a drop down list with an entry
for graphic files (rough translation from my French interface). If selected, it
enables the path field to navigate the HD.

As a workaround, you can create a custom desktop entry in your
~/.local/share/applications folder. Then put the full path of the icon in the
icon line.

Ah, thanks.
Ok, I see the icons are there;
on my system (freebsd) they are in /usr/local/share/icons/hicolor...
which is where they should be.

However, the xfce4 launcher icon chooser doesn't have a way to add an
arbitrary path to the set of icons, so I can't set it. This is clearly
not an aoo problem, but do you happen to know where the config path for
the xfce4 icon chooser is?

Thanks

Hi all,

The installation appears to have gone well, but when I start up my desktop
(xfce4) the launchers with shortcuts to aoo are missing the icons.
My /usr/local/applications/openoffice-4.1.2/*.desktop files have entries
in them which look like:
Icon=openoffice4-calc

However, when I open the xfec4 panel / launcher to edit it, the icon
entry says "No Icon" and when I go to select an icon there are no aoo
icons present.

Can someone tell me which option is needed to load the icons, which port /
package they are in, and which file they are supposed to be in? I would
have thought they were supposed to get loaded with the base aoo port.
How do the icons get located without an actual path name in the specification?

In the search field, enter grammar and you'll have some matches.
The one often cited is LanguageTool:

But there may be others.

Hi. I’m Jordan Hamilton.

I have a problem with my openoffice program. I am currently teaching in china,
so having my word processor available is extremely important, and I can’t
necessarily get to the right website for whatever assistance that might be.

My dictionary told me to update, and I had problems getting to the right
website, or getting the right file, for that. I’m not sure what happened
because I’ve been busy for the last few weeks, but my dictionary shut down. It
forgot everything! Every word is underlined, like it’s misspelled. I have
no idea how to fix it. No support page that I have been directed to has helped.
Uninstalling, and reinstalling hasn’t helped, and neither has the “Repair”
program in windows. Adding dictionaries doesn’t do anything except bring up
error messages that say that the files that are in the folder aren’t there, or
the files I’m trying to create aren’t there. A big, frustrated “duh!” there.

I’ve always been a fan (and installer) of openoffice. I love what you do. I
love the idea behind your approach to software. But this issue that I’ve been
having has shown me some of the flaws in your website, and support applications.

You need a support crew, with an easily accessible email address. If it’s on
your website, you should be able to help people fix it, instead of them having
to go to other 3rd party programmers that we can’t necessarily contact.

Can someone please, please, please assist me in fixing my issues? And explain
to me what might have happened, and how to stop this from happening in the
future?
I’ve never seen this before. I’ve tried for the last half day to fix it. I’m at
wits end.

I’d be very grateful for whatever help you can offer.

Thank you, for providing a great program for all these years. I’m sorry that I
couldn’t fix it on my own, but this program is important in my work.

Thanks, again.
