Re: [libreoffice-website] Lost excel spreadsheet

Hi Michael,

This is the project mailing list for maintainers of LibreOffice
websites, and not a support forum. We can't provide technical support on
this list I'm afraid, but you can get help from the community on Ask
LibreOffice:

https://ask.libreoffice.org/

When you post your question there, please provide details about your
setup (LibreOffice version, operating system, where you previously saved
the files etc.) so that someone can more easily help you!

Kind regards,

[libreoffice-website] LibreOffice website donate page: removing "Bitcoin" in localised versions

2022-06-24 Thread Mike Saunders

Hi everyone,

We recently removed support for donations via digital currencies. I've
removed references to "Bitcoin" from

https://www.libreoffice.org/donate/

and the EN, DE, FR, IT, ES, PL, SL und TR donate pages too. For those
maintaining site translations in other languages, please check and
remove "Bitcoin" too (it should be in FooterText).

Thanks!

[libreoffice-website] LibreOffice 7.3: Updates for "New features" page on website, for release on 02 Feb

2022-02-01 Thread Mike Saunders

Hi everyone,

Tomorrow, for the release of LibreOffice 7.3, I'll update
https://www.libreoffice.org/discover/new-features/ with the text below.
I'm sharing here too, for other language projects to update their sites
(or with features they feel should be highlighted):

Accurate document conversion

LibreOffice 7.3 is our latest major release, with a strong focus on
document compatibility. But it has many new features too – check out
this video for an overview, and then scroll down for more details...

Better collaboration

Sharing documents and edits with other users? LibreOffice 7.3's change
tracking features have been enhanced, to make modifications more clear.
You can now easily identify when whole paragraphs have been moved.

Work faster in Calc

When you're working with spreadsheets, the new Bash-like autocompletion
feature helps you to input data in a snap.

Bullets and barcodes

Working with bulleted lists is now simpler, and you can now insert
barcodes into your documents with just a few clicks (QR codes are also
supported).

[libreoffice-website] Removing Nabble references from LibreOffice websites

2021-11-12 Thread Mike Saunders

Hi everyone,

Thanks as always for your help in maintaining the native-language
versions of the LibreOffice website! We're no longer using Nabble as an
interface for mailing lists, but we still have some links and references
to it on our websites.

I've removed all references to it from the English and German websites,
and if other maintainers of sites in other languages can do the same,
that would be a big help! A quick way to see where Nabble references are
is by searching for:

 site:libreoffice.org nabble

on Google or DuckDuckGo (although the latter seems to have some results
that have already been changed).

Thanks again for all your help :-)

[libreoffice-website] LibreOffice community members: Have your say in our survey!

2021-08-25 Thread Mike Saunders
Hello everyone! At The Document Foundation, we try to grow and
strengthen our community in many ways. We’d like to improve our support
for existing community members who’re working on LibreOffice, but also
increase the number of contributors (and TDF members).

To achieve this, we’ve created a survey for active members inside the
LibreOffice community, to identify areas where focused activity is
needed, and address the needs of local projects around the world.

There are 17 questions in the survey, and it runs from today until
September 8. So, if you’re active in the LibreOffice or Document
Liberation projects, let us know what you think! We appreciate all feedback:

[libreoffice-website] Removing Nabble links from native-language websites

2021-07-21 Thread Mike Saunders
Hello,

Nabble is no longer working as a web-based front-end to our mailing
lists, so we need to remove/unpublish the links to them. I've done this
already for the EN and DE websites, and for other native-lang projects,
people with admin access to those can remove them.

Typically, Nabble is linked under the translated "Help" menu of the
website, and often in pages about mailing lists.

Thanks!

[libreoffice-website] Website updates for LibreOffice 7.1

2021-02-01 Thread Mike Saunders
Hi everyone,

I'm preparing the website updates for the release on Wednesday. Steps
I'll take:

1) Update "7" to "7.1" on https://www.libreoffice.org (and NLP sites)

2) Update https://www.libreoffice.org/download/release-notes/ to reflect
the new "Fresh" and "Still" branches

3) Update https://www.libreoffice.org/discover/new-features/ with text
underneath

4) Update https://www.libreoffice.org/about-us/libreoffice-timeline/
(and add info about LibOCon -- thanks Raal for the reminder)

Anything else, anyone has noticed?

New text for point 3:

Faster, smoother, smarter

LibreOffice 7.1 includes performance improvements across the board:
find/replace operations, spell-checking, autofilter, and more. New
physics-based animation effects and soft-blurred shadows make your
presentations stand out. And new table and spreadsheet functions help
you to handle data more effectively.

Work with more documents

LibreOffice uses the standardised OpenDocument format - a great choice
for long-term data storage. But it can also open Microsoft Office
documents, and LibreOffice 7.1 brings many improvements to compatibility
here: change tracking in floating tables, formula import in text tables,
and export of formula fields.

Choose an interface customised for you

When first started, LibreOffice 7.1 presents a new user interface
selection dialog. You can choose between the "classic" menu+toolbar
layout, or opt for the newer NotebookBar design, which is also available
in the menu via View > User Interface > Tabbed.

Further details

For a full list of new features in LibreOffice 7.1, see our release notes.

Yes, I've added "LibreOffice via Chocolatey" to the extra links on the
right-hand side of https://www.libreoffice.org/download/download/

It's getting a bit cramped there, with Flatpaks, Snaps, portable

I think we can do it on a project-by-project basis. I won't add any
contact details by default, of course, but if someone wants to add their
email address, that's up to them! For instance, I'm happy to make my pic
clickable so that people can send me an email about marketing.

In most cases I'll respond by pointing people to the marketing mailing
list, for instance, but at least it's some personal contact at the
start. And if I get overloaded with unrelated messages, I'll just remove
the link :-)

Yep, I've been thinking about this too. At the moment, the sites have
different approaches to attracting newcomers, so I don't think we need
to combine them. But we should avoid duplication indeed.

That's a good idea. I'm thinking of a series of images with "Small

contributions that didn't require huge amounts of work, but make a big
difference for end users nonetheless. Maybe with a pic of the developer

[libreoffice-website] Update proposals for "Get involved" page

2020-09-10 Thread Mike Saunders
Hello everyone,

One of our long-term goals at TDF is to grow the project and community,
as much as the userbase. Like, it's awesome having 200M+ users, but if
few people contribute back, it's just a pretty number. So I've been
looking at ideas to improve this page:

https://www.libreoffice.org/community/get-involved/

IDEAS

1. For each sub-project, have a photo and name of a "contact person" (eg
Heiko for Design, Xisco for QA etc.) The goal here is to make the
sub-projects look more welcoming and friendly, and provide a place to
start for newcomers. Of course, we don't want these "contact people" to
be overloaded with questions from newcomers, but they can at least point
newcomers to the right channels (Telegram, mailing lists etc.)

2. For each sub-project, add some specific tasks that people can do. So
not just "join this community" (and then what?), but "join and get
started straight away by doing X, Y or Z"

3. And also for each sub-project, add links to interviews with community
members from the TDF blog. These often describe how someone got started
in the community, and their experiences.

What do you think? Are there other ways to improve the page? Thanks in
advance for all feedback!

[libreoffice-website] LibreOffice website updates for upcoming 7.0 release

2020-07-28 Thread Mike Saunders
Hello,

Here are the updates I'm planning to make to the LibreOffice website on
the day of the LO 7.0 release:

1. Remove LO 6 banner from right-hand side of blog:
https://blog.documentfoundation.org

2. Change quote (currently about LO 6) on first carousel slider of front
page: https://www.libreoffice.org

3. Update https://www.libreoffice.org/download/release-notes/

4. Update https://www.libreoffice.org/discover/new-features/ with the
following:

LibreOffice 7.0 is our latest major release, with better performance,
improved compatibility, and many new features to boost your
productivity. Check out this video for an overview – and then scroll
down for more details...

Cutting-edge technology and compatibility

OpenDocument, LibreOffice's native file format, has been updated to
version 1.3. In addition, many improvements have been made to Microsoft
Office OOXML document compatibility - DOCX, XLSX and PPTX.

Geared towards your workflow

LibreOffice 7.0 includes various usability improvements. Bookmarks and
fields can now be protected to prevent accidental changes to them, while
bookmarks can be shown inline in text. The Navigator has many tweaks to
make it easier to work with, while handling of quotation marks and
apostrophe in several languages has been updates too.

Professional shine for your documents

New shapes galleries have been added: arrows, diagrams, icons and more.

[libreoffice-website] LibreOffice website, search box and menu

2020-07-28 Thread Mike Saunders
Hello,

A search box was recently added to the main LibreOffice website,
https://www.libreoffice.org - and since then, the menus appear to be a
bit misaligned:

https://i.imgur.com/fQkqn37.png

Also note how for "Discover", the black box starts almost exactly at the
first letter, whereas for other menu headings, there's some padding on
the left. Anyone got any ideas about this?

Thanks!

[libreoffice-website] Glitch with German blog

2020-05-18 Thread Mike Saunders
Hello everyone,

When the German blog is viewed in certain ways, a glitch appears. For
instance, check out this category view, and how after the second post,
all subsequent posts are nested inside each other:

https://de.blog.documentfoundation.org/category/libreoffice/

Does anyone have an idea how to fix that? Maybe some custom CSS I could
add in WordPress?

Thanks :-)

A week ago, we blogged about the new website we've been working on:

Well, today we're pleased to announce that it's ready for testing!

You can see that we've already imported many items, and while there are
still some more improvements to come, we're finishing off the core
functionality. If you have feedback, please send it to this list!

Great, thanks Ilmari -- that has fixed the issue with anchors, eg:

https://www.libreoffice.org/community/get-involved/#design

I also updated:

#content1 {
  background: #ff;
  margin-top: 90px;
}

to be 120px in main.css, to accommodate for the larger top bar. It all
looks good now, but if anyone spots something odd, please let us know!

Currently the text in the black bar is a static string, so we can't
change it for specific websites. That may be doable (perhaps Jean has
some ideas) however...

I know that's not very flexible, but IMO this approach is better than
nothing! As mentioned, we get lots of questions asking why the
LibreOffice website is only in English, so hopefully this extra bar,
even in its limited form, helps with that...

[libreoffice-website] Language changer implemented on LibreOffice website

2020-02-10 Thread Mike Saunders
Hello everyone,

I've implemented the language changer banner at the top of the
LibreOffice website:

https://www.libreoffice.org

Thanks to Jean Spiteri for his help. The goal here is to make visitors
aware that the website is available in different languages. (We get
emails asking why the site is only in English...)

IMO it looks good, but I've noticed one thing -- it causes a slight
misalignment with some content. For instance:

https://www.libreoffice.org/community/get-involved/#docs

With the language changer, the green LibreOffice banner now slightly
overwrites the "Documentation" header. Does anyone know a way to fix
this, apart from manually updating the padding like so:

Thanks!

[libreoffice-website] LibreOffice Viewer for Android unpublished in Play Store -- please update website pages

2020-02-03 Thread Mike Saunders
Hello,

We've unpublished the LibreOffice Viewer for Android in the Play Store,
as it hasn't been updated for nearly two years and has quite a few
negative reviews. We still want technically-minded people to try it via
the .apk, and (ideally) help us to improve it, but in the meantime we've
removed the link from this page:

https://www.libreoffice.org/download/android-viewer/

If maintainers of this page in other languages can also remove the Play
Store link, that would be great -- thanks!

[libreoffice-website] How to handle blog posts that contain out-of-date information

2019-12-04 Thread Mike Saunders
Hello,

Someone pointed out that a few blog posts with technical details about
building LibreOffice are a bit out-of-date now, eg:

https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2019/07/09/start-developing-libreoffice-download-the-source-code-and-build-on-windows/

However, many people reach these pages from search engines, so we don't
just want to delete them completely.

I can add a big yellow banner at the top saying "This information has
been superceded by the guide in the wiki" and point people there, but I
just wanted to check what others think, in case there are better ideas!

[libreoffice-website] Keeping system requirements up-to-date

Ahh, thanks for pointing that out -- it is indeed a mistake, seemingly

Well, that's why we posted on the list here before implementing, to get

It will help those people who don't know that the LibreOffice website
exists in other languages, surely. We get regular feedback and social
media comments asking why the LibreOffice website isn't in French,
German etc. A banner at the top listing some languages should help in
this respect...

Sure, if someone wants to implement that, go ahead! I don't have the
knowledge to do it, but I want to at least partially solve the
aforementioned problem, and the proposal on
https://newdesign.libreoffice.org does that IMHO.

I believe it's better to roll it out now and then possibly upgrade it
with a more sophisticated solution later, like you mention. But
otherwise we could just do nothing for a while until someone codes that
solution. I take the "Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good"
approach -- let's get something implemented now, even if it's not the
most sophisticated, rather than just waiting.

That's just my 2C of course :-)

OK, makes sense -- but then we'd need to get this string translated into
all the languages. With the "English | 中文 (简体) | Deutsch | Español |
Français | Italiano | More..." approach, we can just get it online ASAP.
The only word that needs translating is "More" but it's not critical.
> I'm available if you need webdevs :)

If you'd like to work on an alternative design, cool, go ahead :-) I
like your idea, but Jean's implementation (as on newdesign) is available
right now, and is one fix for the issue of people not knowing that there
are other websites in other languages. That's why I'd like to deploy it
ASAP, but we can of course work on other solutions in parallel!

I'm not a web dev so I'm not super familiar with how it all works, but
if you want access to newdesign to test, I'm sure infra can grant you
the necessary magic powers :-)

Have a good weekend!

Do you mean, some text like "Click here to view this site in other
languages?" I'm not sure if that's the best approach -- it's just some
more generic text on the page that visitors' eyes may skip over.

With a few clear language names, like on
https://newdesign.libreoffice.org, it stands out and is immediately
clear what it does. And we don't need to put so much work into
translating the other string into so many languages.

> Listing languages on that bar is
>
> * not working nicely on mobile devices, especially portrait mode (like
> already specified)

I just checked https://newdesign.libreoffice.org and it works fine on
mobile; sure, it takes up a bit of extra space at the top, but it's easy
to use. Perhaps we could make it smaller, but we should also bear in
mind that 96% of visits to the LibreOffice website are on desktop
devices -- only 4% on mobile.

> * some users may complain "with is language X appearing before that one"

Yeah, I thought about that too -- but we can make the case that we can
only show a handful of languages given space constraints, and it makes
sense to put the busiest sites first. There is the "More" link to show
them all, so it's not like we're hiding any of the others.

Other projects take this approach. Look at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LibreOffice for example (at least, in a
desktop browser) -- in the "Languages" section on the left, it shows
only a small selection, and you have to click "61 more" to show the rest.

(I'm not sure how Wikipedia generates that list of "Suggested
languages"; I was happy to see Bavarian up the top, but the page is
realy small compared to the Portiguese one, which is tucked away under
"More". Maybe it's based on location?)

[libreoffice-website] TDF Mastodon instance?

Hello everyone,

I've had a request from a native-language project to set up a TDF
Mastodon instance. As you may have seen, we currently use Fosstodon for
@libreoffice in English, which works well:

https://fosstodon.org/@libreoffice

However, Fosstodon is English-only, so perhaps a TDF instance would be
good to get other native-language projects on board, all in the same
place. What do you think?

I just went through most of the Stripe process, and it says "Subscribe
to Donation to The Document Foundation - X per month" and then with a
separate "Subscribe" button, so it should be clear there too.

But I wonder: on our site we say "Recurring payment", and on Stripe they
call it a "subscription", so maybe we should use the same wording?

It's already in bold in the title bit, although we could make that
bigger. And then it says "recurring" in the drop down list too. So
basically, those people who make the mistake manage to somehow miss the
"recurring" word twice...

I agree -- we don't plan to use a drop-down list, but a few examples and
then a "More" button, like at the top of:

https://newdesign.libreoffice.org

Clicking "More" takes you to https://www.libreoffice.org/community/nlc
-- so a dedicated page with languages and websites.

[libreoffice-website] Websites in various languages that need updating

Hello everyone,

I've gone through various language versions of our website, and made a

give us a hand and update them, we'd really appreciate it! That's a

Re: [libreoffice-website] Use of Windows 7/8/10 (XX bits) instead of Windows (x86|x86_64) on download page

2019-10-16 Thread Mike Saunders
OK, I've updated the download page so that the options in the "Choose
your operating system" box now say "32 bit" and "64 bit" instead of
"x86" and "x86_64". I've also changed "Mac OS X" to "macOS".

These are just the short names so it shouldn't affect anything -- I've
tested all the downloads and all seems fine, but let me know if anything
else needs changing!

We did talk about changing "Windows" to "Windows 7/8/10", but I need to
find out when the longer descriptions (function NicePlatform() in
DownloadObject.php) are used...

I agree with this change -- good idea. We also need to change "Mac OS X"
to "macOS". It looks like these names are defined in
mysite/code/DownloadObject.php, eg:

case "win/x86_64" : return "Windows x86_64"; break;
case "mac/x86_64" : return "Mac OS X x86_64"; break;

So I can make the changes myself -- but I just want to check in case it
breaks anything.

Cloph, is it OK to change these?

[libreoffice-website] Banner for switching languages on the LibreOffice website

2019-10-10 Thread Mike Saunders
Hello,

From some of the feedback we get, many people think the LibreOffice
website is only available in English; they don't that there are
translations in many other languages.

To improve this, Jean Spiteri and I have worked on an idea -- check out
the black banner at the top of:

https://newdesign.libreoffice.org

I think we should add a few more languages there (Deutsch and Italiano
for instance). I don't want to prioritise any particular language, but
the idea is to clearly show that the site is available in many
languages, and people can click "More" to see the full list.

What do you think? We could roll this out on the main site pretty soon...

[libreoffice-website] Update on the LibreOffice Extensions and Templates website

2019-08-15 Thread Mike Saunders
Hi everyone,

As you know, we have a website hosting extensions and templates at
https://extensions.libreoffice.org. There are currently 380 extensions
and 398 templates - and we really appreciate the help of community
members who've created them.

The current Plone-based extensions and templates website has served us
well over the years, and we'd like to express a special thanks to
Andreas Mantke for creating the site and maintaining it over all these
years, investing lots of work and effort into this. Thanks a lot!

As we look into the long term, we aim to further improve the user
experience, localization and connection to our single sign-on (SSO)
service. In other words, we want to build a website that's super
friendly for both users and extension/template creators, and which can
be translated easily, because one of our goals is reaching as many
people in the world as possible, in as many languages as possible.

We had previously announced that we were investigating OCS as a
solution. OCS has many strengths, but it also has some limitations in
terms of self-hosting and localisation. Therefore we decided to keep
looking for other options that would also integrate with our single
sign-on system.

To this end, we've decided to build a new extensions and templates
website based on SilverStripe. As you may know, SilverStripe is the
content management system we use for the main LibreOffice website. It's
mature, flexible and provides many of the features we need.

Our infra team has been working on a demo SilverStripe-based website
with the basic functionality for uploading, administering and
downloading extensions and templates. There's more work to be done, but
we think this is the best solution in the long-run. In the coming weeks,
we hope to open up the website for more testing, polishing and
translations, and then make it live for everyone to use.

We'll post more on these lists when it's ready for testing!

I think the layout is fine, but make the picture width 100 or 150, and
remove the hight element (otherwise it forces all pictures to be a
certain ratio, which doesn't work). In my map here:

https://www.libreoffice.org/assets/Uploads/contributor-map.html

...I specify a width of 100, but no height, so the browser does that
automatically.

Also, I would suggest a preset zoom level. If you see my map, it shows
almost all land on the world (except for some parts right on the edges).
The code that does it in my map is:

var mymap = L.map('mapid').setView([28.505, 16.09], 13);

I would prefer 2+ years, or even more. Some people come and go in the
project, so it's good for a map to show how diverse and worldwide the
community is, even if it includes people who haven't directly been
active in the last 12 months.

Meanwhile, I had an issue with the image:

https://i.imgur.com/8rptehC.png

This is on https://newdesign.libreoffice.org/community/maps/ -- the
"Buzea Bogdan" entry for Romania. It seems the link URL and image have
both been shortened somewhere on the way... Is that fixable?

Otherwise, it's looking really good -- let's test it a bit more, and
then look at rolling it out, if there are no other issues!

Cheers,
Mike

I believe we have www.whatcanidoforlibreoffice.org already, right?
Presumably we can host it on vm168, like the main site, but make that
domain point to it, right? (I don't know much about DNS!)

On the main site, we host some things locally, like the Lato fonts, eg:

Sidorela, anything else you need from us? Or can I just take the latest
website HTML/CSS from Git, put it in a folder on the main website, and
Guilhem sorts out the domain?

I think it's just because the words in the menu are quite long, so the
menu becomes wider than the logo. If I do "inspect element" in Firefox,
for instance, and replace "Zhromadźenstwo" with "Z", then the menu is
shorter and goes alongside the logo as usual.

My suggestion is: remove "Startowa strona" from the menu. It's not
required (for instance, the EN and FR sites don't have it, and their
menus begin with "Discover"). Also, the LibreOffice logo goes back to
the start page anyway.

What do you think? If you really want to keep "Startowa strona", we can
look at tweaking the CSS, but that might be a bigger job!

I definitely agree with this. I think the pen image is OK, but the
following two images clash with the white text somewhat. I was going to
look at editing the images to improve the contrast, but your CSS
solution looks more elegant. If you like (and nobody disagrees), I can

Hello,

I've noticed for a while that on hi-DPI displays, some parts of the

I've updated a few assets with hi-res versions. For instance:

* Arrow icon in the top-right of the download box

I've tested the changes in various browsers and all looks fine, but just
let me know if there are any issues! And also if there are any other
low-res assets that we can update...

Sure, I was just doing some work on the site so I've updated the German

"einen Fehler melden" (report a bug) now links to the longer URL that

Yes, good idea.

I think this looks fine when the video isn't active, but when you click
play, suddenly the large black borders on the left and right appear.
Maybe make it a little bit taller to shrink the borders?

Those changes sound good to me, and I agree that we should make our

[libreoffice-website] Download page: changing "Mac OS X" to "macOS"

2018-08-20 Thread Mike Saunders
Hello everyone,

On this page: https://www.libreoffice.org/download/download/

We still say "Mac OS X", although Apple rebranded it to "macOS" back in
2016. Shall I update it? I can change the names in
mysite/code/DownloadObject.php, but I just wanted to check first in case
it breaks anything. (I very much doubt it -- just being super cautious!)

Ah yes, that's a very good point actually. One other option for a small
menu icon would be the Wikipedia mobile site approach:

https://i.imgur.com/MNBHqnj.png

That icon under the title opens up a list of languages. But maybe it's
familiar to regular Wikipedia users, but wouldn't be so effective on the
LibreOffice site for newcomers...

Thanks for looking into this! Yes, I totally agree that we need to make
the other language sites more prominent. We often get emails to info@
from non-English speakers who try their best to give feedback or ask
questions, but don't know that there's a whole LibreOffice site in their
language.

I think the banner is OK, but it does push the rest of the content down
a bit. Is there any way to add a "Dismiss" button so that it's not shown
again to people who don't want to change?

Another alternative would be to have an extra menu on the right-hand
side, after donate, with a UK/USA flag for the English site. This would
keep it nice and small, and could have other flags in the drop-down list
underneath. Not sure how easy that is to implement, though!

Indeed, I was working on this and it fell down the TODO list a bit with
LibreOffice 6.0 and FOSDEM. Sorry for that. The ticket is here:

https://redmine.documentfoundation.org/issues/412

In short: the website currently uses the Lato font, and using Google's
hosted Lato2 doesn't help either. But if we use our own, self-hosted
Lato2, it appears to fix the problems (at least with Slovene and
Lithuanian).

Scroll down here to "Prost, odprt pisarniški paket":

http://newdesign.libreoffice.org

I pasted in Slovene and Lithuanian text and it appears to be fine in
various browsers. If there are no other objections, I can make the change...

I'd be a bit cautious about putting the word "work" in there. For those
people who contribute to the project in their spare time, and do
"normal" work during the day, we don't want to suggest that it's further
work on their pile :-)

And ideally, it should be fun, stimulating and fulfilling to get
involved with the project. So it shouldn't seem like "work" at all (even
though obviously some tasks are a bit laborious).

Also I think it's useful to have an active verb there at the start -- a
call do action, like "get" or "do" or "join" or something like that. At
least in the magazine world, we were always encouraged to use them...

Just my 2 cents however -- what do others think?

Re: [libreoffice-website] NL website default font

2017-12-14 Thread Mike Saunders
Hi everyone,

I think I'm making some progress on the website font issue. I'm using
our "newdesign" server for testing, and I've self-hosted Lato2. In
addition, I've pasted bits of text from the Slovene and Lithuanian
websites, which were broken before, into the "Free Office Suite" and
"Fun Project" sections when you scroll down:

http://newdesign.libreoffice.org

With the most recent Lato2, this appears to work for me in Linux,
whereas with the Lato2 from Google it looks odd as we previously
discussed. Can you confirm how it looks to you please?

If this works, we can consider hosting Lato2 ourselves, but that's a
bigger step...

[libreoffice-website] Various small website update ideas

2017-12-13 Thread Mike Saunders
Hi everyone,

Here are a few ideas I've been collecting in recent months -- just small
tweaks we could make to the main LibreOffice website. Any thoughts on them?

* Discover menu: next to Writer, Calc, Impress etc. should we say what
they do? Like "Writer - word processor"

* http://www.libreoffice.org/discover/libreoffice/ -- add some
screenshots here

* http://www.libreoffice.org/discover/new-features/ -- do we need that
big green image at the top? It doesn't seem to have much meaning

* Also on that page: do we need the collapsible headings? At least in
Firefox, they sometimes get lost behind the floating top panel when you
click on them

* http://www.libreoffice.org/discover/templates-and-extensions/ -- as
there are only two sections there, we can probably remove the
collapsible code as well and just have them static

* http://www.libreoffice.org/discover/screenshots/ -- should we make the
screenshots open in a new tab

* http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/install-howto/ -- change Mac OS X
to macOS (probably need to keep a redirect here though, to stop breakage
in other sites that link to this page)

Good point -- I've updated the text to say:

"Calc can read .xlsx files created with Microsoft Office for Windows and
macOS."

I've updated that too. The page had links saying "Click here for the
release notes" pointing to the wiki, but it's already on a page called
"Release notes" so it looks a bit complicated. Instead I've changed the
links to:

"Click here to learn about the new features in LibreOffice 5.4"

And the same for 5.3.

Cheers,
Mike

Good find -- thanks for letting us know! I've fixed it now.

Cheers,

[libreoffice-website] LibreOffice being downloaded with .man rather than .msi extension

2017-10-25 Thread Mike Saunders
Hi,

We're seeing more and more questions/complaints about this on social
media and our download@ address. I assumed it was purely a problem with
IE/Edge browsers, but after reading this:

https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=53241

It looks like a problem with certain mirrors. Is there anything we can
do to fix this? I'm worried that for every one message we hear from end
users about this, another 10 simply give up trying to install it and use
something else!

[libreoffice-website] Ask LibreOffice site: short explanation for why registration is required?

2017-09-20 Thread Mike Saunders
Hello,

We get lots of questions about LibreOffice on our social media channels,
and I usually point people in the direction of Ask LibreOffice. However,
sometimes I get replies from people complaining that they have to
register for yet another service.

On this page (when logged out):

https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/account/signin/?next=/en/questions/ask/

Underneath "Please click any of the icons below to sign in", could we
add a short line of text like so:

"(Registration is required as a spam protection measure.)"

Or something like that. What do you think?

Re: [libreoffice-website] Re: Use HTTPS URLs in announcements and blog posts

Hi,

I've updated all the links to be HTTPS, and we'll make sure to only use
HTTPS in the future.

Thanks for your contributions! There is indeed some overlap between the
websites -- sometimes deliberately, but other times just by accident.

You may be interested in joining the next infrastructure call to talk
about website issues:

https://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/website/msg14838.html

The documentation team also has regular calls, as you can see in the
archives:

https://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/documentation/

The Document Foundation also has a documentation coordinator -- you
could drop him a line to talk about ideas:
olivier.hal...@documentfoundation.org

What particularly on the website do you want to change or update?

Mike
