Re: Re: xfree86 4.5 cross compilation
Dear Tim Roberts, What??? PAGE_MASK should equal the size of a physical memory page in bytes, minus one. It varies based on the processor, but on most of the systems where Linux runs, PAGE_MASK should be 0xfff (4095 decimal) -- Tim Roberts, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Providenza Boekelheide, Inc. If I do not remember wrongly, PAGE_MASK is definded as ~(PAGE_SIZE-1). It's the high bits of memory that defines the page address and ignores offset in pages. So in a 4k pagesize system as default, PAGE_MASK = ~0xfff, not 0xfff. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Daniel(解利军) CESC Lab, Zhejiang University 2005-12-29 ___ Devel mailing list Devel@XFree86.Org http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/devel
How to turn off the hardware mouse rendering?
Hi,all I want to snap a desktop include the mouse pointer. However, the common tools and functions can not capture a windows image include mouse. I think it's because the mouse is not draw by Graphic Card and is not put to the color buffer. So how to stop the hardware acceleration? Or there is some special way to do this job? Thanks a lot. [XFree86] Standard GUI for UNIX at the system level
Is there any reason as to why X cannot be rewrote to be the standard interface to UNIX? If there is please tell me so that I don't bug everyone on this list with pointless questions about upgrading the X interface so that it accepts PDF protocols for it's rendering capabilities. OR about adding a common installation program for easier manipulation of apps based upon a standard X format. That all desktops could use for the installation of their programs. OR about working on a common interface that allowed experienced users the full power of the UNIX api, and could introduce new users to an easy to use OS. IS there any reason why this can't be done given the abilities of the Open Source community in reference to Gnome/KDE? And if you want to know why I wrote to this mailing list it's because YOU are the maintainers of the SYSTEM upon which our standard interface will be run. _ Use MSN Messenger to send music and pics to your friends http://messenger.msn.co.uk ___ XFree86 mailing list XFree86@XFree86.Org http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

[XFree86] How to zoom xrandr with Xkb?
Hi, I could of course set up a window-manager keybinding to start xrandr 0, 1, ... But it seems a stupid thing to do, to pass a key event to the WM, have it fork / exec an external program which in turn connects to X, to tell it what to do. I was instead thinking of something like this, which I have in my Xkb setup: key KPSU { type= HYPER+ALT, symbols[Group1]= [ KP_Subtract, XF86_Prev_VMode ] }; key KPAD { type= HYPER+ALT, symbols[Group1]= [ plusminus, XF86_Next_VMode ] }; The drawback of these is that the virtual resolution doesn't change so the screen slides around, which is sometimes not what I want. I tried XF86ZoomOut and XF86ZoomIn instead, but they seem to be NOPs. Any help would be greatly appreciated! [XFree86] XVideo support problem.
Hello, my first post to this list so please bear with me :). I am new to the world of Linux, and especially to the configuration part, but I will try to make this as straightforward and complete as possible. Here goes: I downloaded and compiled the latest stable mplayer version in order to be able to watch movies and the like. Now, upon running it I get too poor performance to even consider using it to watch movies. I quickly understood that this was due to the lack of XVideo support, as xvinfo informed me. I proceeded to the XFree86 manual page and noticed that the module I am using (via) _did_ support the Xvideo layer, which confused me. I made sure that it was indeed this module I was using, but still, xvinfo would report no adaptors. Is it perhaps a newer version of this module or X that is referenced in the documentation? Strangely enough, my local man file also tells me that it has Xvideo support. From the log: XFree86.0.log:(II) Loading extension XVideo XFree86.0.log:(II) Loading extension XVideo-MotionCompensation The version of X: XFree86 Version 4.3.99.902 (4.4.0 RC 2) Release Date: 18 December 2003 I am running SuSE Linux 9.1 and the graphic chipset is a VIA VT 7205 (acknowledged as supported in the man file/documentation online). The X Config file loads the via module as advised in the man file. Thank you for any help as I am running out of ideas here. /Daniel -- ___ Sign-up for Ads Free at Mail.com http://promo.mail.com/adsfreejump.htm ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

NVidia driver hang - bug #1351
After compiling XFree86 4.4.0 on my computer, I found ocassional hangs on the X server. The only way to recover was to log in from another computer and then kill X. A similar experience was reported at XFree86 Bugzilla as bug #1351, so I contributed with my comments. The full reports can be located there. Apparently, the hang can be traced to the NVidia driver nv_drv.o, in my opinion to the NVSync function at nv_xaa.c, but I cannot determine the conditions that trigger this bug. I think a workaround can be to turn off acceleration (Option NoAccel), which is kind of dissapointing if I am using an NVidia card. [XFree86] ML 9.2, ATI Radeon 9000 Pro and a whole lot of flickering going o n...
Hi there I am trying to set up my ATI Radeon 9000 Pro and Iiyama VisionMaster Pro 400 (701GT) to run successfully under Mandrake Linux 9.2 (XFree86 4.3) and at the moment the screen flickersso badly that I have to go backmy nice calming Win XP install... Anyway I installed Mandrake Linux 9.2 spanning a number of mount volumes on my PC. However, the VisionMaster pro 400 was not recognised during the install and hence, not referenced in the generated XF86config-4 file so I added a sample "Monitor" section for VisonMaster Pro (seerelevent sectionsfrom XF86Config-4 below) which I obtained by looking through the web and relevant user groups. Next, Irestarted X server but the screen still flickers. Ahhh! So my questions are a) Is their problem with my XF86congig-4 (see attached XF86Config-4.current), which would resolve my issue? b) Do I wait for Mandrake Linux 10 or Xfree86 ver 4.4.0 and install this c) Do I look at Installing ATI Proprietary Linux Driver 3.7.6: http://www.ati.com/support/infobase/linuxhowto-ati.html d) Do give up and resign myself to the fact the Linux is really for rocket scientists with lots of time on their hands! If someone could point me in the right direction I will hopefully do the rest Cheers Daniel Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Keyboard1" Driver "Keyboard" Option "XkbModel" "pc105" Option "XkbLayout" "gb" Option "XkbOptions" ""EndSection # this was automatically configured but seems to work so leave unalteredSection "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse1" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2" Option "Device" "/dev/psaux" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"EndSection Section "Files" ModulePath "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled" FontPath "unix/:-1" RgbPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb"EndSection Section "Module" Load "dbe" # Double-Buffering Extension Load "dri" # direct rendering Load "extmod" Load "glx" # 3D layer Load "record" Load "xtrap" # others to be added Load "fbdevhw" Load "record" Load "freetype" Load "type1" EndSection Section "DRI" Group 0 Mode 0666EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Keyboard0" Driver "keyboard"EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "monitor1" VendorName "Plug'n Play" ModelName "Iiyama A701GT, VisionMasterPro 400" HorizSync 27.0-96.0 VertRefresh 50.0-160.0 # modeLInes taken from a similar VisionMaster Pro 702 config file ModeLine "640x480" 62.43 640 672 832 896 480 482 494 520 #134Hz ModeLine "800x600" 78.13 800 840 1040 1120 600 602 614 640 #109Hz ModeLine "1024x768" 97.83 1024 1072 1312 1408 768 770 782 808 #86Hz ModeLine "1152x864" 106.91 1152 1200 1440 1536 864 866 878 904 #77Hz # all lines below commented as not needed # Sony Vaio C1(X,XS,VE,VN)? # 1024x480 @ 85.6 Hz, 48 kHz hsync #ModeLine "1024x480" 65.00 1024 1032 1176 1344 480 488 494 563 -hsync -vsync # TV fullscreen mode or DVD fullscreen output. # 768x576 @ 79 Hz, 50 kHz hsync #ModeLine "768x576" 50.00 768 832 846 1000 576 590 595 630 # 768x576 @ 100 Hz, 61.6 kHz hsync #ModeLine "768x576" 63.07 768 800 960 1024 576 578 590 616EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "device1" VendorName "ATI Technologies Inc" BoardName "Radeon R250 If [Radeon 9000]" Driver "ati" BusID "PCI:1:0:0" #Option "CloneMode" # [str] #Option "CloneHSync" # [str] #Option "CPPIOMode" # [bool] #Option "Dac8Bit" # [bool] #Option "AGPFastWrite" # [bool] #Option "VideoKey" # i #Option "SWcursor" # [bool] #Option "EnableDepthMoves" # [bool] #Option "PanelOff" # [bool] #Option "DDCMode" # [bool] #Option "Dac6Bit" # [bool] #Option "RingSize" # i #Option "EnablePageFlip" # [bool] #Option "ForcePCIMode" # [bool] #Option "NoBackBuffer" # [bool] #Option "BufferSize" # i ### Available Driver options are:- ### Values: i: integer, f: float, bool: "True"/"False", ### string: "String", freq: "f Hz/kHz/MHz" ### [arg]: arg optional #Option "NoAccel" # [bool] #Option "AGPSize" # i #Option "UseFBDev" # [bool] #Option "CloneDisplay" # i #Option "AGPMode" # i #Option "CPusecTimeout" # i #Option "CloneVRefresh" # [str]EndSection #The screen section was m
[XFree86] xf86config serial mouse problems
Hello, my name is Daniel. I installed Slack9.1 on my older pc (AMD K6). I am using an older keyboard that had a serial touchpad built in (seprate cord for the touchpad/ works perfecly). The mouse worked after the bootup when i login as root, and allowed me to move the virtual cursor around, but when i launched KDE it did not respond. I took the advice of a semi-similar problem on linuxquestions.org by using xf86config. and set it to auto but it did not work.. I plugged in another mouse (serial microsoft) but it did not work either. I also tried changing the location to /dev/tty0 but it did not work. Still no mouse response. I tried some other mouse settings just in case, but they too did not work. Perhaps i do not know the correct mouse location or setting. Also when i try startx it gives me an error the it could not find protocol sysmouse even when i dont have it set on that. Is there perhaps a prolem with the xf86config file? btw, the error output is: /(= =)using config 'xf86config' (ee)mouse1: protocol 'sysmouse' is not supported by this platform (ee)preinit: failed for input device Mouse1 no core pointer fatal server error: failed to initialize core devices / Thankyou, Daniel ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

RE: Proper attribution of patches
Thomas, as a casual observer of your behavior in respect to Harold, your last name would describe you better if it were shortened to Dick. Here is a Quote from Mr. Dickeys webpage where he is whining about not getting credit for patches he wrote: This is a collection of some of the patches which I have made to GNU programs. I have submitted these patches to the appropriate maintainers, but received no acknowledgment. That is, they were ignored. In a few other cases, I have seen my changes incorporated without credit, but that is another matter. The former (nonexistent or non-responsive maintainers) are preferable to the latter (egotistical plagiarists). And now, he is the one trying to claim credit for others work. Very adult of you. Thomas, you wouldn't let Harold commit patches. Now that he has moved the project, you are stealing his (and in this case) other peoples patches. Why don't you people grow up? Harold, thank you for continuing the work you do, and for putting up with these egotistical jerks in XFree86 land. RE: Proper attribution of patches
Wow, your still so pissed off about being wrong, now you are attacking all of Harold's friends. Boy, you're a big powerful man. Let me bow before you. #1. I do not know Harold. All I know about him is what I have learned by following this list for about a year. #2. I don't know you. All I know about you is what you are posting to this list. #3. I don't need to defend my current opinion. It is correct. The only reason you are still posting like a 10 year old is because you know it is correct. If my opinion is wrong, why don't you actually respond to the points that I and others have made, instead of trying to insult more people? #4. My past postings addressed the same issue. The XFree86 people tend to behave like spoiled brat 10 years olds, fighting Harold every way that they can, while he continues to remain civil and present facts to support his issue, while the person on the other side ignores the facts and calls him names. #5. I have taken a small part in many other opensource projects (mostly under the jakarta umbrella) and I have never seen someone be as disrespectful and unhelpful as you (except for a couple of others on the XFree86 list, the last time they attacked Harold). Maybe someone can enlighten me as to the history of the project administrators of XFree86 becoming the enemies of the project? I would almost think they are on Microsofts payroll. You are continuing to act like a complete schmuck. Apologies to everyone else that continues to be annoyed by this pissing match. [XFree86] ATI IGP 340M Support
Hello all. I'm searching all over the internet and all I was able to achieve is start X with Radeon driver (4.3.99) and get 300-400fps in glxgears. I really would like to know how the support for IGP 340M is going in terms of 3D Acelleration... What I mean is - when will I be able to play some of the heavy 3D games like Neverwinter Nights and UT2003? Thanks in advance, Daniel ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

RE: Kernel Module? On second thought... plus OT: Flame fest
Does the notion of a kernel module have ANY merit at all? Or was the idea complete garbage? Obviously your idea isn't complete rubbish, but you are preaching to a very particular crowd, so you need to make sure you're ideas aren't contrary to their personal biases, sad isn't it? Ok, now that we have that over with, on with my response. I think the concept of having kernel modules handling some tasks has merit, but two things should smack you in the face whenever you conceder it. Note, DRI is basically what you are looking for, but I like to rant, so here goes: 1. Portability Since the module would have to be kernel dependent, porting an XServer to another platform becomes difficult. It is already difficult enough to support new platforms as it is in X. The stipulation to get into XFree is that any platform dependent changes to the server must be optional. If the functionality you are requesting applies to changing the baseline X Server, you better make sure that it works on all the platforms Xfree Supports, which is a lot. The way I read your comment, it seemed like a broad strokes change to the entire system. 2. Change Control If you know anything about Xfree86, you will see that the maintainers don't like to depend on code externally. Making a kernel module, you are taking the ability of the XFree developers to have total control over the timing and release procedures of the module. This is also a bad candidate for versioning incompatibilities inside the current iteration of the system. soap_box flame_rating=100% I really with that there were more well defined API's in Xfree which would mitigate any need for compiling module X for server Y. It is really stifling to work with an open source system that only introduces changes once a year. I am not talking about the X Protocol specs, but the basic building blocks of the server itself. It would be nice to add a newly developed extension, form of encryption, or whatever without having to get everything rebuilt for me. Following the comments from a previous commenter, X is too big for mear mortals to manage is a whole, and it'd be better IMHO to see some basic separation put in, and have some document like the architecture and framework of the Xfree86 server which ties all the discrete parts together. I can only imagine that the original goal of Xfree86 was to make a fully self-contained X server to compete with the big guys in the market. The problem is that today there are throngs of people making things in the user / toolkit space that are now redundant with those in Xfree and barely maintained. An example breakup for binary releases: Xfree86 Server Xfree86 Server feature insert feature here Xfree86 Server module insert module here XFree86 Client Xfree86 Common XFree86 Client Tools Xfree86 Server Devel Xfree86 Client Devel Xfree86 Common Devel XFree86 Fonts How you define features is sadly ambigious, maybe something a little broader than just X extensions. This may never be possible with Xfree's architecture, I am not versed enough to make a call. Core system changes are fine at 1 year, Feature updates can be released quarterly, Driver releases should be monthly Of course the implementation of such a scheme involves a lot discussion larger than my soap box. /soap_box ___ Devel mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/devel

[XFree86] Matrox P650 support?
Hi, could anyone state, if the Matrox Millenium P650 would work with XFree 4.3.x on FreeBSD? The G450/550 seem to be supported. Maybe the chipset is compatible enough to work with the mga driver. Matrox provides Linux drivers, but I'm not sure, if there exist kld-wrappers for FreeBSD. Any advice appreciated. best regards, Daniel -- IRCnet: Mr-Spock- All your .sigs are belong to us - Daniel Lang * [EMAIL PROTECTED] * +49 89 289 18532 * http://www.leo.org/~dl/ smime.p7s Description: S/MIME cryptographic signature

I haven't seen any updates recently for SuSE binaries and could probably update things from XFree86 latest stable release, if I knew how! :o) In looking over all that, it didn't quite make sense to me in the way I am familar with installing, building source files. So here come the questions. Anyone running this card in SuSE or others with 4.3 presently? Is 3D supported from XFree or do you need to use the ATI drivers for that? Are there new binaries for SuSE somewhere? If not, how do you compile and install the newer stuff to use that card? Hi Patrick, Unfortunately, Radeon 9200 support is not included in the base XFree86 4.3.0 distribution. Adding it on is a job for various distributors - Debian and Red Hat add it on, but apparently SuSE haven't. I think your best bet would be to contact your distributor directly and ask them to include Hui Yu's Radeon patchset; if they don't know where to get it, point them at me. [XFree86] Beginner with ati video card
Hi, I am a newbie trying to make the transition from Windows to Linux. I have installed Mandrake 9.1, and I have performed all of the available package updates. I am not completely comfortable with using command line terminal yet, so I am still stuck in GUI mode. I am trying to get everything set up so that my wife and kids can use the computer without too much hassle. They don't care to tinker with Linux and just want it to work. I like to tinker and learn, but in order to completely break away from Windows, I have to have certain functions working somewhat seamlessly (though they only work properly with Windows about 1/4 of the time). I have an ATI All in Wonder 8500DV (64 M video ram), and the setup programs have detected every function properly except the TV receiver. The Drakx TV setup doesn't detect the receiver. Has anyone had this problem and resolved? What skill level is needed to install the correct drivers, etc.? Any help would be appreciated. Since both of them also release drivers for MacOSX, i guess this would not be very expensive to just rebuild powerpc versions of them. Or for other arches too. Perhaps if said companies business and marketing departments determine that producing PPC drivers will be in the best interests of their stockholders, they might decide to book engineering resources to produce PPC drivers. The lack of such drivers would indicate to me that there is not enough revenue predicted to be generated by allocating such resources that such drivers are more cost to develop than any financial gains received by doing so. I'm no financial analyst by any stretch of the imagination. Running a publically traded company on a charity basis however is a good way to upset stockholders. Another issue is if those drivers are in the least flaky, then you get very bad press for having dodgy drivers, so you're going to either have to dedicate heaps of resources, or none at all. I know what I'd be gunning for, if I had a BComm, or whatever. Try putting the engine of a Japanese car into an American made car. Then complain to Nissan that it doesn't work, and see how far you get. Nissan did make the V8 engine for the Holden VL Commodore, a typical Australian grunt car. :) If anything they'd likely get sued by 3rd party vendors whom they've licensed code and/or patented technology from, which they do not have the right to give away to the public. That includes both software, and hardware interfaces as well. Only the particular hardware vendor in question knows what IP they have in their hardware and drivers, and what they can do with that IP legally. Yep, and this goes quite deep: apparently they can't even release TV-Out specs, for fear of getting smacked down by Macrovision. You're really asking Kentucky Fried Chicken, to give the recipe for their 11 herbs and spices here, and the secret sauce. Pretty soon, half of the KFC customers have no need to go to KFC as they can make it at home. And McDonald's start selling Alabama Fried Chicken, so you can go to the one place for all your burger and chicken needs. Bzt. By the way, I have a recipe for chicken that legal jargon tastes very similar to, but is not KFC. I wonder if someone let the cat out of the bag at KFC one day, and this is the Colonel's secret recipe? I've got this black syrupy stuff that tastes just like Coke, too! Who knows. The chances of reverse engineering the kernel microcode engine from one of these drivers however is even much more likely than reverse engineering the KFC recipe by analyzing the molecular structure of the crispy crust. I also hope like hell Mailman isn't munging Reply-To, because that's just *wrong*. If the original author hasn't added himself to Cc: and is not on the list he will not get the reply unless I add it by hand - which I often forget. I don't know if any of this can be fixed in mailman but I'm sure it could be fixed by some mail pre- and post-processing. Umm, it's an MUA thing. The list manager is *not* to dictate to the MUA what to do - group reply should send to all of From, To and Cc, excluding yourself. In Mutt, the list of your addresses is maintained by 'set alternates regexp'. If we can agree that we want something like this and on what we want we can probably find a volunteer who'd hack this for us. I think you've come up with the wrong solution to the wrong problem, honestly; what mailer do you use? -- Daniel Stone [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.kde.org - http://www.debian.org - http://www.xwin.org Configurability is always the best choice when it's pretty simple to implement -- Havoc Pennington, gnome-list pgp0.pgp Description: PGP signature

Re: [XFree86] Follow the cursor..
its easy to get the root window (it is done with the DefaultRootWindow() macro) everything is drawn on that window so if u take a screenshot of it (a pixmap) u can manipulate it however you want, with that pixmap you can make a bigger one and paste it back to the root window Hi, I was wondering if it is possible (and I know it is..) to hack the XFree86 code to make the virtual screen follow the mouse's cursor as if the screen's window mouvement was linked to the centered cursor. By that I mean that if I move the cursor, the whole zoomed section of the screen moves with the cursor. Then if the cursor reach a certain percentage of the zoomed screen' width and height it stops being linked so it becomes possible to move the cursor freely again.. The purpose of this is for a friend of mine who has 30% of his vision and is using UNIX. He needs his screen to be in very low resolution for him to see things clearly. I am just asking a evaluation of how hard and how long might it takes to do such a job onto the XFree86 source code. I will do such modifications myself but I was hoping for you to give me a hand to publish the code and expose it on xfree.org to promote and help people with vision problems.. Re: [XFree86] specific refresh rate
Billy Biggs wrote: Daniel Bush ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): I am using: XFree86 Version 4.3.0 (Red Hat Linux release: 4.3.0-2) 1) How do I know exactly what refresh rate X is running @? It's a pretty easy. The bottom of this email contains a shell script. The formula is pixel clock in hz divided by the number of pixels, so htotal * vtotal. Since pixel clock is in MHz in a modeline, multiply by 10. 2) How do I specifically set the refresh rate I want? In X 4.3 the 'randr' program can help you easily switch between defined modelines at various refresh rates, or you can create your own modelines that have the refresh rate you want. I have examined my /var/log/XFree86.0.log and came across the following at the very end: GetModeLine - scrn: 0 clock: 65000 GetModeLine - hdsp: 1024 hbeg: 1040 hend: 1176 httl: 1344 vdsp: 768 vbeg: 770 vend: 776 vttl: 806 flags: -21474836 I assume X is using 65Hz Wrong. The dot clock is 65MHz. Your refresh rate is (65000*1000)/(1344*806) or 60Hz. I have also tried to configure the following Modeline under the Monitor section but, it seams to have no effect: Modeline 1024x768 97.40 1024 1072 1192 1416 768 768 771 809 This would be the same modeline with a high pixel clock and running at 89Hz. You could likely come up with an 89Hz refresh rate modeline that was better aligned for your hardware, but you're going about it the wrong way. X will choose the highest refresh rate mode available to it, and it has alot of modes built in. You should likely make sure the VertRefresh option (or your HorizSync option) in your Monitor section is set to not be too restrictive, it will likely fix your problem. -Billy #!/bin/sh # # Print the refresh rate, assuming that the bottom of the # output of xdpyinfo -ext XFree86-VidModeExtension is the # current modeline, and that it's in the format I expect, # which may not be true. H sounds a bit worrying; I will bear this in mind VSince I am not content (I got better results with the XFree86 version that came with RH7.3 -- I only went to XFree86 ver4.3 as it promised SiS300 support which wasn't happening under the RH7.3 version (I forget which version that is)), I am gonna try to go to RH8.0 and be content till I can buy a new card... ;P I'm beginning to see why Windows XP (which happily coexists with my 9000) is so popular! Without XP we wouldn't be able to exchange these e-mails! I like Linux (as it is similar to the Solaris I use at work) but I would want to be totally reliant on it! So to end I will give some of your suggestions a go in a structured fashion and see what works best Good night Daniel Yes, I understand that a bit! I do dual boot with Win2K still as evidently I too am far away from being ready/able to changeover;[ ! Sorry I can't help you more...I keep checking all the posts and reading elsewhere in hopes to find something that might put some light on this subject. If I read anything (more), or get help from the Xconfig people (before or after the upgrade), I will try to pass it on. mgolter Regards Daniel The linux and XFree4 install was so I can run some 3D applications...but I did not know that glide was so specifically aimed...the Real problem was that I couldn't get the X server configured at all. Right now I am stuck with 16 bit color...(using generic VESA in Xconfigurator, which is not as good as what I could get with the XFree86 version that came with RH7.3! {I installed the 4.3 version as no other version even lists the SiS300 chip...and it looks like 4.3 doesn't really support it either...) How would I change the default behavior of ctr-alt-bksp killing X to ctrl-alt-del killing X? I tried changing that usign xmodmap, but that made it so that shift-del killed the server -- not what I wanted. Alternatively, how can I enable ctrl-alt-del to reboot the machine? [XFree86] Why is the CrtScreen option missing in the 4.3.0 radeon driver?
Hi, I've already asked Marc Aurele La France this question, who maintains the ATI driver. He told me to post my question to this address, so here it goes: /me wrote: [...] I'm using a radeon 8500 (from hercules) video adapter and just upgraded XFree86 from 4.2.99 to 4.3.0. When I first tried to use the ati driver in 4.2.x I ran into the problem, that my monitor was not detected correctly. I got the error message | (EE) RADEON(0): No valid mode found for this DFP/LCD although I had just a CRT screen connected to the vga output. I had a look at the log file and it said I should try Option CrtScreen in my XFree86Config... and it worked well for me. It seems that in version 4.3.0 of XFree86 this option has been removed from the radeon driver and I'm getting the same error message as above when I try to start X11. (No valid mode...) On the XFree86 webpage I found the option crt_screen in the ATI Adapters README file. This option doesn't work as well. ;( Why has this option been removed and how do I set up X11 to work properly on my system? I'm sending my XFree86Config and my XFree86.0.log as an attachement. The commented part is a relict from the fglrx driver test, that didn't work well with 4.2.x and doesn't work with 4.3.0 at all. thanks, Daniel -- eat(this); // delicious suicide ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

[XFree86] ATI Radion 9000 Pro ML 9.0 Configuration Error
All, My issue is similar to those experienced by William G. Lea but as there are some subtle differences, I thought I would start a new thread. Solution: Is it to upgrade to XFree86 4.2.99.902? If so is there any anadditional patch and also doI need to addanything extra the to the config file?
