[XFree86] dual processor, RH9, XFree86, NVIDIA

2003-09-17 Thread Melissa Golter
Sorry if this cross posts to any, or too many, people...I was not sure to
which list this question is most applicable...indeed, it may be that the
nvidia list is the way to go, but I have never received a reply to any
question posed to that list; so I apologize if this seems to take
advantage of your willingness to help and thank you in advance for any
info.

I have a dual processor machine running RH9.0 -- I can still successfully
use startx (NVIDIA drivers) when booting into the smp version of RH9, but
trying to boot into the single processor version, I get an XIO:fatal IO
error 14 (connection reset by peer) on Xserver :0.0

I was trying this mode for 2 reasons:
1. SGIs performer, I have read, sometimes will not recognize a second
processor and right now, tho with the newer version of performer (3.0.2)
the system doesn't crash, perfly still won't work -- so I thought I'd go
with one processor. Please correct me if I am wrong about this assumption
(that smp indicates dual processors are accessed, etc)

2. There is no *gears* lib as mentioned in the NVIDIA readme, only
glxgears (which works); an ldd yeilds fewer libraries than should
exist...so I was gonna update my drivers...I thought I'd go to the one
processor first as glxgears does work and I don't know what diff
gears/glxgears.

What I would like to know is:
when booting into the non-smp mode of RH9, do I need to reconfigure the
XFree86Config file? or ;] what?

XFree86.log and log.old files are attached, but are also available at
ftp.evl.uic.edu/pub/mgolter/

Again, thanks for any info

[XFree86] monitor support/patches

2003-03-24 Thread Melissa Golter
I am having a terrible time configuring XFree86

My *exact* monitor is not listed (I have a Sony Multiscan seII -- Sony
GDM-20SE2T)

XFree86 configurator under RH8.0 lists only the GDM-20SE2TS (specs are
same...but the monitor was not *found*) -- is there a patch available? Is
one necessary?

When I enter the wrong monitor (done previously!) and the SiS300 card I
have, startx won't work. I had to re-install 8.0 as I was not sure how to
work through the Fatal server error message: The application 'x conf.py
lost its connection to the display :17.0; most likely the xserver was shut
down or you killed/destroyed the application, when a simple re-boot still
would not let me see the redhat-config-xfree86 *window* to change anything
in the xwin setup...

After the first install of 8.0 i first received the error
message:
/usr/share/redhat-config-xfree86/xconf.py:1238: DeprecationWarning:
self.xml.get_widget(display_dialog), set_uposition(xpos, ypos)

I am still getting that message along with:
*dccporbe returned the bogus values
ID: None
Name: None
Horiz Sync: None
Vert Sync: None

I am down to using a generic monitor and VESA...and 16 bit color
depth...yuk. I am gonna try to do some visualization work and need/would
like to get as *hi-end* as I can (I am already limited by a funky graphics
card...)

Again if anyone knows if there is a patch for the GDM-20SE2T or if the
GDM-20SE2TS would be close enough that I *won't* (most probably) have to
re-install again, or knows where to look for such things, I wouldn't mind
hearing from them.

Thanks in advance,

mgolter

RE: [XFree86] (no subject)

2003-03-24 Thread Melissa Golter
Cynthia,

I (had already) updated to 4.3 (with no ostensible errors) before that log
was written; that log should reflect that. ?

In any case, I installed rh8.0 last night in hopes of improved
performance...now neither my monitor, its specs, or my card is recognized.
Go figure.

XF86Config log is attached if you are interested
It can also be found:
ftp.evl.uic.edu/OUTgoing/mgolter/xfree/
(where the older 7.3 xfree86.0.log is still available)

Thanks for you help

Thanks so much for your attention!

have tried what u suggest, but unfortutely startx won't work when i do
that.

I even called Sony (Sony doesn't support but sugested that mebbe someone
had written a patch). I am Not sure why under rh7.3 I Could successfully
do as you say (albeit with no improvement in performance), but under rh8.0
startx crashes.

 1) attempted to install the 4.2.X ATI drivers found
 athttp://www.ati.com/support/drivers/linux/radeon-linux.html?cboOS=Linux

I had all of the above experiences also...for the SiS300 which is why I
looked into and downloaded the XFree86 4.3 version...

by fglrxconfig: did u type setup at bootup? This gets you into the
Xconfigurator where u configure the software to run the right monitor and
card.

I will ask around my lab as there are a few people who have said they are
going with the Radeon (nvidia's are too $$$, but they (nvidia) do have
drivers that I have actually seen do work!) and see how they do this, if
they have similar probs...

I agree this seems so tangled...but I did get an email from the guru of
sis chips (an active xfree person I gather); encouraging, but have not had
a response after sending an outline of problem. Mebbe I do not explain the
problem well enuf, don't know...of course, if understood the problem well
enuf, could prob come up with solution, yes??? that or there is no
solution with my card (company offers NO support)!

Keep on pluggin...could be something really simple like case-sensitivity,
spelling error, putting file in incorrect directory...

best,
mgolter

Re: [XFree86] RE: Sis300 support in XFree86 version 4.3.0

2003-03-22 Thread Melissa Golter

Are you still having problems with the SiS300 in XFree 4.3? If so, what
 sort of problems?

 Thomas

Hope this is clear enough...

a. yes, the SiS300 card is not being recognized by RH7.3, nor RH7.3 with
XFree86 version 4.3.0, on my system. Right now, Xconfig will only allow a
screen to show if the refresh rate is reduced to 60, color bit depth to 8,
and VESA selected.

b. I have attached the XFree86.0.log (there is also a copy at
ftp.evl.uic.edu/pub/INcoming/mgolter/xfree/. There was, as Cynthia
Grossen noted, a [drm] drmAgpAcquire failed error (as well a
*libglide2x.so missing* message which (apparently) has to do with 3DFX
cards, so I have ignored the .so message -- that message has not
re-appeared). Let me know if any other info is necessary to help amend the
situation?

I have also attached a copy of a recent posting which seems pertinent as I
am considering installing RH8.0 to see if the situation improves (see
c. below)

c. Some day I would like to try to run some 3d graphics applications
(Performer, YG, CavernSoft) on this system. From the (your) Thomas
Winischhofer webpages I see SiS is one company that does not share
development info and perhaps this card is not a likely candidate for such
efforts?

(Note: until I saw the support for the SiS300 card listed under 4.3 I had
intended on picking up the SiS300 (your) *fix* on those (your) pages.
Then I thought mebbe it had been included in 4.3? However, being rather
new (!) to all this, and in light of the degrading situation, I now don't
feel confident about grabbing the *fix*. And remember tho notes were given
re support, that drm support was not included per se.)

Upshot: if running 3D Is within the realm of possibility while using the
SiS300, any help to try to get a working 3D display would be appreciated.
(Note: by 3D here, I am Not referring to active stereo, but the facsimile)
Let me know what (other) info might be necessary.

Thanks for your attention,

mgolter

[XFree86] Sis300 support in XFree86 version 4.3.0 (fwd)

2003-03-14 Thread Melissa Golter
To Whom

Among other cards that XFree86 version 4.3.0 pruports to support (and
which are subsequently listed once the version is installed) the SiS300
video chip is mentioned.

Tho the installation of this version (on RH7.3) of XFree is not without
error on my machine (apparently libglide2x.so is missing --?), tho other
new drivers mentioned on the XFree86.org page do show up on the list of
drivers, mention of the SiS300 (the card I have uses it...;] ) is missing.

Is it *Really* not included (which means I have wasted several days ;P)?

Please note: regardless of support, right now I cannot get even
Xconfigurator (in setup util) to configure even a generic VGA card with my
monitor!!! Any suggestions?

thanks

mgolter

PS I (just) subscribed to the general list, but for some reason had to
send this using another email address ([EMAIL PROTECTED]). Can I
change this? Please advise?

[XFree86] (EE) SIS(0): [drm] drmAgpAcquire failed

2003-03-14 Thread Melissa Golter

To Whom! ;)

Ijust installed Xfree86 version 4.3.0 on a system with RH7.3 and a video
card with a SiS300 chipset (SiS301 onboard for dual monitors) (installed
ver 4.3 cuz the native Xfree86 did not support the SiS300, and this
version did list support).

Upon install, the message was: no libglide2x.so was found
(needed for the SiS300 card? It is an AGP2x card)

I tried to configure using XFree86 -configure, and the message was:
(EE) SIS(0): [drm] drmAgpAcquire

Trying to configure the card using Xconfigurator (Note the SiS300 driver
could not be found on the list of cards), the xserver message is that
*something is wrong with the settings*. (I had chosen: generic VGA card
and used my monitor settings, and finally went through the list of MB
settings, none of which were acceptable to Xconfigurator.)

S, I am not sure what to do...any suggestions would be read. I have
attached a copy of the /var/lib/XFree86.0.log file.

Thanks in advance,

mgolter

Re: [XFree86] RE: Sis300 support in XFree86 version 4.3.0

2003-03-14 Thread Melissa Golter
The linux and XFree4 install was so I can run some 3D applications...but I
did not know that glide was so specifically aimed...the Real problem was
that I couldn't get the X server configured at all. Right now I am
stuck with 16 bit color...(using generic VESA in Xconfigurator, which is
not as good as what I could get with the XFree86 version that came with
RH7.3!

{I installed the 4.3 version as no other version even lists the SiS300
chip...and it looks like 4.3 doesn't really support it either...)

Thanks for info on the .so (so's I am not a gonna worry (esp since no
system complaints!)

;)

Re: [XFree86] Dual-head support for nv driver?

2003-03-14 Thread Melissa Golter
there are Linux drivers for the high-end nv cards (the ones that support 2
screens (dual-head capabilities -GeForce4 Ti on up) but dunno if that
helps you...but I am having a terrible time finding support for dual head
capabilities on less expensive, lower end cards from any supplier --
please post if (anyone) knows!!!

The 'nv' driver doesnt seem to support Xinerama ... is there

Simply entering the relevant 'Screen 0' and 'Screen 1' entries
