[XFree86] XFree86 Without Root

2014-05-02 Thread Peter John Burkimsher
Hi XFree86 list,

tl;dr - Please can someone give me advice on running XFree86 as an unprivileged
(non-root) user?

OpenShift (http://www.openshift.com) is a service from Red Hat that gives you a
completely free server with SSH and SFTP access. Unlike Amazon's free for 12
months model, this is free forever, and I've used it flawlessly since 2011.
It's also not blocked in China. I can run command-line tools, Bash scripts,
PHP, Python, Ruby, Java, you name it.

The problem with OpenShift is that I don't have root access to the virtual
machine. So everything has to happen through my user folder. I can export my
path, but I basically have to compile each program I want from source.

X11VNC is an X server and a VNC server in one. I've successfully compiled it,
set up port forwarding, and tried to connect to the virtual machine.
http://www.karlrunge.com/x11vnc/
It connects! But then Xvfb gives an error: http://pastebin.com/RVNcVYvq

If I run Xvfb independently, it gives a bit more information:
http://pastebin.com/9rdf7tFd

I installed Xfsrv from
http://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.8.0/binaries/Linux-x86_64-glibc23/ but
that gives me another error xfs: symbol lookup error: xfs: undefined symbol:
_FontTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners

I'm on the brink of having a GUI-capable cloud computer for free. Is it
possible to modify XFree86 to use different directories instead of /tmp and
/usr? If so, I think this is possible. Thank you!

[XFree86] XFree86 for FreeDOS

2012-07-28 Thread Francesco Cardi
First of all I offer you my warmest congratulations for this great
project, I am a supporter of Free Software and am looking for XFree86
FreeDOS.

I read some guides that I should compile the source with DJGPP, but
others say it is not done then all you need to really run XFree85 on
FreeDOS.

There is this really possible?

greetings

Sorry, I've rather misled you. I don't use atyfb at all.

However, now that you have some kind of display, please send me a

XFree86 -logverbose 5 lock my system entirely. Even SysRq magic doesn't
work. I've failed to trace the reason out.

BTW, I've managed to synchronize my screen. I've overridden pATI-LCDClock
and used Option LCDSync in XF86Config (although I don't know for certain
what it means). It seems to work, but XFree86 still corrupts console mode
(i.e. after X server shutdown, all local ttys are in unusable state). And I
haven't found the reason why clock values are set wrong.

And one more question. This is the part of atimode.c:

I don't use kernel framebuffer, so I think my console mode isn't accelerated.
But at this point, pATIHW-crtc is ATI_CRTC_MACH64. May it be the reason that
my console is not restored on exit? Is this the only method to restore video
state?

That pATIHW-crtc == ATI_CRTC_MACH64 at that point is proof positive that
you are lying to me WRT to not using atyfb.

I don't use kernel framebuffer, so I think my console mode isn't
accelerated. But at this point, pATIHW-crtc is ATI_CRTC_MACH64. May it
be the reason that my console is not restored on exit? Is this the only
method to restore video state?

I've attached diff between 4.7.0 and my current version and my
XF86Config to this message. I've tried to make changes as small as I can
while saving the effect. So don't be surprised if you find traces I've
left while debugging.

Best wishes,
Anton Mayorov

Thank you for the patch, but it doesn't resolved all problems. After

distortion.

Right, that was the intent. Thanks for testing it.

I've done a dig in the code and found that LCD clock calculation is broken.
The previous version of system set LCD clock at approximately 65MHz, my new
build sets it about 150kHz, and I have all my screen distorted. Overriding
the frequency helped a bit, and now I get a jittered X, as with out-of-vsync
on CRT.

I'm not sure if this bug is connected with XFree86 at all. There are several
bits of information that it is a kernel bug. It seems to me that affected
kernel versions are 2.6.22 and 2.6.23. Check this:

http://lkml.org/lkml/2007/6/21/216 .

atyfb has __ALWAYS__ been broken, especially for laptops or adapters not
initialised by BIOS/firmware. And it is unfixable primarily because its
maintainers over the years don't really know what they're doing. That sounds
harsh, but it is true. On ix86, I recommend you use vesafb instead, or
(better) no kernel framebuffer at all.

However, now that you have some kind of display, please send me a
-logverbose 5 log, and I'll see what I can do to mitigate atyfb's latest
brain damage.

Thanks.

[XFree86] XFree86 4.3 question

2008-01-08 Thread Willi Lohmann
Would anyone know if XFree86-4.3.0-62.EL had problems with
XFillRectangle and newly drawn bitmaps in RHEL 3?

I have an application that draws rectangles into bitmaps (depth 1
pixmaps). These bitmaps are set as the stipple bitmap within
corresponding full color GCs for a full color pixmap. The intent is to
use XFillRectangle to stamp each bitmap into the pixmap with the display
being the rectangle.

This works fine in RHEL 4 with xorg-X11-6.8.2-1.EL.13.36 and not so fine
with RHEL 3 with XFree86-4.3.0-62.EL. On RHEL 3, only some of the
bitmaps appear in the final display. I figure the bitmaps are good,
because I substitute XCopyPlane for XFillRectangle and the missing
bitmaps will appear. I'd use XCopyPlane but it is way to slow for the
amount of drawing I'm doing (literally billions of rectangles).

Since it works in the one case, I'm hoping I'm just missing something
simple like an initialization. But if there's a bug in release, I'll
have to look at other options.

(Also, are there any good resources on X programming other than the
O'Reilly books?)

Thanks,
Willi

[XFree86] XFree86 Server Not responding to apps

2007-08-10 Thread Joe Foster
Hello,

I have an XServer ported to ARM. When I start the server it completes
without error and sits waiting for connections. The touch screen is
instrumented to show i/o for up/down events. If I touch, these events
appear in the log. When I try start an app (twm, ico, etc) the server sees
the connection (strace shows it):

I am running FC6 on a Pentium III processor.

Please forward a log without the NoInt10 option.

I have removed NoInt10 option as specified. I have attached
 XFree86.log and XF86Config file.

Earlier I have started with the attached configuration. When I ran
 XFree86 -xf86config /root/XF86config.new I have seen the X display
coming up for Card0 (82815 CGC) only. I didn't see any display for my
 card1 (Radeon R250 Moblity 9000).

I couldn't figure out the reason for failure in card1 inspite of
success in BIOS detection. I have even tried adding the Modeline
paramteres and horizantal and vertical refresh rate in Monitor
Section. My monitor connected to Card1 is Acer 77c.

The adapter will not function without being initialised by its BIOS, and
there's not much the driver (by itself) can do about it. So the next step
is to figure out why that BIOS can't be retrieved. Towards that end,
please send me the output from `scanpci -v` on this system, after a

powerdown-reboot, but before any attempt to start an X server.

Secondly, you appear to have an incomplete installation of XFree86 4.6.0,
as /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/linux/libint10.a is missing. Although I
don't think this is relevant to the problem.

I have disabled the X by changing the runlevel to init 3 followed by
reboot. After reboot I have issued the command scanpci -v and
output is attached in scanpci.txt.

Thanks. Next, let's try retrieving that BIOS ourselves. Again, before
attempting to start any X server, please do, as root, ...

pcitweak -r 2:4:0 0x30

You should see ...

0x8012

If so, continue with ...

pcitweak -w 2:4:0 0x30 0x80120001
mmapr /dev/mem 0x8012 0x2 | gzip -9 BIOS.gz
pcitweak -w 2:4:0 0x30 0x8012

... and send me (privately, not to the list) BIOS.gz.

Please be mindful of typos in the above commands.

Yes you are right, int10 is missing under /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/linux.
I will check it out the reason for this behaviour.

OK.

Thanks.

Interesting. That adapter says it has no BIOS, which makes me think it
wouldn't even work in Windows, unless a driver, very very specific to it,
was provided with it. I've never seen this before.

You should probably try to convince, if possible, your system BIOS to use
it as it's primary display, instead of the Intel adapter, and see what
happens.

In any case, I doubt very much you will ever be able to make it work with
X in the foreseeable future. Unless it is part of the motherboard, I'd be
very interested in buying it from you.

Earlier I have started with the attached configuration. When I ran
XFree86 -xf86config /root/XF86config.new I have seen the X display

The adapter will not function without being initialised by its BIOS, and
there's not much the driver (by itself) can do about it. So the next step is
to figure out why that BIOS can't be retrieved. Towards that end, please
send me the output from `scanpci -v` on this system, after a

Secondly, you appear to have an incomplete installation of XFree86 4.6.0, as
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/linux/libint10.a is missing. Although I don't think
this is relevant to the problem.

Thanks.

2007-06-10 Thread Bharat Kumar Reddy

Hi Marc,

I have disabled the X by changing the runlevel to init 3 followed by
reboot. After reboot I have issued the command scanpci -v and
output is attached in scanpci.txt.

Yes you are right, int10 is missing under
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/linux. I will check it out the reason for this
behaviour.

Regards,
-Bharat.

SBUS cards work, not the Matrox PCI card. I've tried commenting out
modules and changing driver options, but I cannot get it to work,
and it gives me error messages that seem odd to me -- for instance it
says, after loading the mga driver:

(II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:05:0
(WW) MGA: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:1:0) found
(WW) MGA: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:9:0) found
(WW) MGA: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:13:0) found

But I *do* have device sections with this BusID in my config file. Or
is my config file incorrect? lspci reports four G100 at these BusIDs.

Then, always after the log line

(==) MGA(0): BIOS at 0xC

the X server warns about unresolved symbols and exits. As stated above,
no problem running the X server using only the two SBUS cards.

Does anybody have suggestions how I could fix this? Please see below
for my XF86Config-4 and the log.

Yes. The SIGBUS is occurring because the BusID specifications for the device
sections you've identified as Matrox0 and Matrox1 need to swapped.

(BTW, another little problem: When I started the X server using only
the sunffb cards, I noticed that CTRL-ALT-Fx doesn't work; CTRL-ALT-
Backspace does. That didn't change even though I included an explicit
DontVTSwitch option ... is this a keyboard driver issue?)

Yes (again). Keyboard support on this platform (in both Linux and SunOS) is
still quite primitive, expecially for Sun keyboards. For a Type 5 keyboard,
for example, you'd need Option XkbRules sun, and Option XkbModel
type5 in the keyboard's InputDevice section (although that's still not
perfect). Also, should you switch to a 2.6 kernel in the future, you'll
likely need to remove these options.

[XFree86] xfree86 emulation of VGA BIOS cards on powerpc platforms

2006-08-08 Thread jf simon

Hi,
For non x86 architecture like PowerPC, I understand that xfree86
is able to initialize PCI graphic cards, by emulating the VGA
BIOS extension located on the graphic card.
We are using IBM Maple platform (featuring a IBM 970 ppc64
processor). When we boot linux, nothing happens as it seems the
graphic card used (ATI Radeon 7000) is not initialized.

Does emulation for powerPC works in xfree86?
Thanks
-jf simon

Dear Friends,I'm begginer linux user and I need graphic mode (X-Windows) for program at 2.2.1x kernel and I have the SiS315 that is suported by the
Xfree86 4.1 (I see this in Internet)Could I install the Xfree86

RE: [XFree86] Xfree86 intallation

2006-08-03 Thread cckuo

So far as I know the driver
may not have relationship with the kernel version.

(I recently got a bug that
will happen on different kernel version, but I think you may take it a special case.)

If the XFree86 can successfully
build under the kernel (I have ever build XFree86_4.3 on kernel 2.6.X and I cannot
smoothly compile it until I modify some source codes of XFree86_4.3), I think it
may work.

Sincerely Yours,

cckuo

Subject: [XFree86] Xfree86
intallation

Dear Friends,

I'm begginer linux user and I need graphic mode (X-Windows) for program at 2.2.1x
kernel and I have the SiS315 that is suported by the Xfree86 4.1 (I see this in Internet)

Could I install the Xfree86
4.1 or later in a RedHat 6.2 or in a linux with kernel 2.2.x ?

ThankYou,

Javier.

Old kernel versions shouldn't be a problem. Your biggest
concern is that you get an XFree86 version compatible with your libc.
You can run the Xinstall.sh script (see the Install instructions
that come with XFree86) to tell you which binaries you should
be using. You generally want to run the most recent XFree86
version (4.6.0).

Hi, I tried your patch and it does fix the problem with invisible cursor. I
applied your patch, rebuilt the sunffb driver, then commented out SWcursor from
XF86Config file and restarted Xserver. The cursor is visible now, so thanks for
looking into this problem.

I have another question, are there plans to enhance sunffb driver to enable
better acceleration? NetBSD developers did some work on sunffb and they told me
the difference between their driver and the original XFree86 driver was the
driver in NetBSD's X11 source tree had the following modifications:

- it doesn't support 8 and 24 bit visuals at the same time
- it uses XAA for acceleration, which provides Xrender support
- it supports hadware accelerated alpha-blending that speeds up rendering of
anti-aliased fonts

Maybe you could apply some of those changes to XFree86 sunffb driver, because
it does make a big difference with GTK2 applications.

Thanks.

Hi, I've built 4.6.0 version from scratch on Sparc Solaris, also I've

have the following problem:

There is no mouse pointer, the mouse seems to function OK, i.e. I can click on
menus, select text, drag windows around, etc, I just can't see the pointer
itself, which makes it very difficult to use the mouse. Could anyone suggest
where the problem might be and how to fix it?

The desktop managers included with Solaris solve this by running
/usr/openwin/bin/fbconsole which captures output to /dev/console

and redirects it to a file in /var/tmp.

 Marc.

Yeah I noticed the official binary XFree86-4.6.0 distribution had sunffb driver
under 'drivers/sunos', when I copied NetBSD's sunffb source files + Imake file,
I ended up with 'drivers/sunffb_drv.o' file.

In any case, even when running the original XFree86 with
'drivers/sunos/sunffb_drv.o' there was no mouse cursor. I'll try your
suggestion and move 'drivers/sunffb_drv.o' to 'drivers/sunos/sunffb_drv.o', but
I have a feeling this will not do anything.

The reason why I copied NetBSD's sunffb driver is because it has better
acceleration, the whole reason why I'm running XFree86 on Sparc Solaris is
because GTK2 uses libcairo for rendering, which needs Xrender extension for
fast rendering. Sun Xservers don't have this extension, so most GTK2
applications are painfully slow. NetBSD's sunffb driver renders antialiased
text pretty quickly. As you can see I'm not an expert on these things, this is
what I've been told by the Sun and NetBSD developers.

[XFree86] xfree86 infrastructure

2006-05-31 Thread f.l.

hi,

recently i'm expierencing problems while compileing some X-apps, most
of them use gnu autoconf and so, and autoconf doesn't play well with
xfree86 stuff.

xfree86 site seems to lack information about a close internal view of inside ,
or i'm not getting the right place?

for example , what the relationship between OpenGL component ,
is it another project just like freetype and fontconfig is, or an
independent implementation?

TIA

[XFree86] XFree86 4.5.99.901 snapshot problem

2006-03-12 Thread Tom Williams
I've been running XFree86 4.5.99.901 since it came out and it's been
running well, except for today when I pressed Ctrl+Alt+F7, in an attempt
to switch to the console on tty7. When I pressed Ctrl+Alt+F7, X seemed
to crash. The video got all garbled and no key sequence I press did
anything (Ctrl+Alt+Del, Ctrl+Alt+Fn). I didn't try Ctrl+Backspace, so I
don't know what that would have done.

Unfortunately, no errors were logged and I had to use the reset button
to reboot my system. I'm running on Linux with a 32-bit 2.6.15.5
kernel, glibc-2.3.4, and gcc-4.1.0.

Peace...

The file drakconf.real is a perl script MCC is a gui version of

I suspect the old version of xtest was probably modified by Mandrake
because it is quite a bit smaller than your new xtest file. --- Please

This is due to a file name conflict. The older `xtest` is not, in fact, part
of XFree86 4.3, but something else entirely. The `xtest` we now provide (as
of 4.5) is a DMX sample utility. These utilities should probably be
installed elsewhere. But in the meantime, you should revert to your older
`xtest`.

[XFree86] Xfree86-4.0.1 glibc 2.1 on kernel 2.4.21 Installation Error

2006-01-24 Thread Shireesh Annam
Hi:

I have an x86 based PIII embedded system Single Board Computer (SBC)
which has Timesys Linux with kernel version 2.4.21 with glibc21
running. I now want to have X installed on this computer. For that I
have downloaded XFree86-4.0.1 because of compatibility reasons. I have
tried installing it, but it always stops with the following sentence:
Object format is 'ELF'. Normally, it should proceed beyond this point
and install X completely. A snapshot of the konsole output is also
appended below.

Could someone help with a solution to install X on this system? Any
pointers? What is that I'm doing wrong?

TIA,
Shireesh

---
bash-2.05# ./Xinstall.bin

Welcome to the XFree86 4.0.1 installer

You are strongly advised to backup your existing XFree86 installation
before proceeding. This includes the /usr/X11R6 and /etc/X11
directories. The installation process will overwrite existing files
in those directories, and this may include some configuration files
that may have been customised.

Do you wish to continue? (y/n) [n] y

Checking which OS you're running...
uname reports 'Linux' version '2.4.21-timesys-4.1-agpgart',
architecture 'i686'.
file: Using regular magic file `/usr/share/magic'
Object format is 'ELF'.

You can copy to a Windows formatted floppy using mtools.

mcopy /var/log/XFree86.0.log a:LOGFILE.TXT

or something like that.

followed the instructions but can't seem to get anywhere. I'm a windows guy
and I'm sure this is over my head, but it has to get done and I'm working my
way through it best I can. I was trying to get a tightvnc service on the
server which said it wouldn't operate without xfree86 so I was going to
install it. The box won't startup at all now and says unable to
locate/open config file fatal server error failed to initialize core
devices Log file is under /var/log/xfree86.0.log, but I can't seem to view
that to show you a copy. Is there anyway I can get some help with this? A
phone number would be great if I could get one. Please help a lost IT guy.

 Thank you very much.

You need to configure your X-server. XFree886 -configure can
generate an /etc/X11/XF86Config file for you.

/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/libbitmap.a

This seems to be a common problem on Red Hat. I think maybe
they have the modules in a different package from the rest of
the X-server or something like that.

Re: [XFree86] xfree86 4.2.1 with VNC 4.1.1

2005-09-09 Thread Marc Aurele La France

On Tue, 6 Sep 2005 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I built RealVNC 4.1.1 and Xfree86 4.2.1 for AIX 5.2. I used gcc 3.3.2, GNU
make 3.80, the ibm.cf, ibmLib.rules and ibmLib.tmpl config files from Xorg
and parts of the hpux_gcc.patch that came from VNC. (The ibm files that
came with Xfree86 seem to have some problems I couldn't fix). BTW, I used
4.2.1 because that is the latest rev the RealVNC people use.

The problem I have involves color issues when using a program called CATIA
V4. This is a modeling program where the actual drawing area has the
correct colors, but the text areas where you select functions and commands
are not right. If I set the VNC server to be 24 bit and TrueColor, then I
can't read the text at all. The letters are black on a black background.
If I set the server to 8 bit PseudoColor, the letters are very dark blue on
a black background. Usable but terrible on the eyes. It should be white
letters on a gray background.

I really don't know anything about Xservers etc. I did a xdpyinfo when
connected to the AIX box using VNC and also sitting at the AIX machine
itself. Below are the outputs for comparison. Can anyone tell me why my
colors are not correct? And is this something I can fix or something I
have to live with?

You don't say what you're running AIX on, but I suspect the RGB masks need to
be byte-swapped (which won't work for depths 15 16, but that's another
issue).

[XFree86] XFree86 Version 4.2.0 crash

2005-09-03 Thread Dave Kemper
Hello,

I realize I'm ignoring the very first thing your log file says, which is to
try a newer version before reporting problems. I am running XFree86
Version 4.2.0, which is bundled with Red Hat 7.3, an old but very stable
release. This version of XFree86 has run without incident on this machine
almost continuously for two years now, which is why the recent crash was
so surprising.

I am ignoring your directive because it is essential that the X
installation on this machine be rock-solid; I cannot afford to try a newer
release only to find, in another year, that the same (highly intermittent)
bug is still in place and has caused another crash. If I can't be assured
that the bug is fixed, I will have to look for an alternate X server. So I
am hoping that from the attached log file, someone can identify the cause
of the crash and tell me either Yes, this bug has been discovered and is
fixed as of version 4.foo of XFree86 or No, this bug has not been
discovered yet but can be fixed now with this information. I don't see
any obvious error message in the log other than Caught signal 11 so I was
unable to google for further details about this problem.

The crash happened on the evening of August 31, 2005. X had been running
since June 29 (the machine was last booted on June 28), a relatively short
time for this machine. (Typical uptime is well over 100 days.) I log in
on a tty and start X with the startx command rather than running xdm or
similar. I use fvwm as my window manager, and I was not doing anything
tricky or unusual at the time of the crash - I was trying to select a
drop-down menu on a web page. X disappeared very quickly without any
warning that something bad was about to happen, and I was dropped back to
the Linux tty with the Fatal server error message. I monitor available
swap space fairly regularly and the last time I checked before the crash
there was plenty. I can give you whatever other information you might need
to determine the cause of this crash, but offhand I don't know what else
might be relevant and I don't want to make this message so long that no one
bothers reading it. :-)

Thanks for any information or insight you can give me,

--Dave
