Re: [zfs-discuss] Deletion of file from ZFS Disk and Snapshots

2008-05-14 Thread Aaron Epps
Thanks for the info folks, it's what I expected but I just wanted to verify
that this is not possible.

See, that's the problem. I don't want to delete the entire snapshot, I just
want to remove a particular file from the snapshot.

[zfs-discuss] HOWTO: Backup a Storage Pool

2008-05-13 Thread Aaron Epps
What's the preferred method for easily backing up a storage pool? I know about
send/recieve/etc, but I'm asking are people using another Solaris box, Tapes,
CDs/DVDs, External Drives? Basically, I want an off-site backup so that if my
place burns down and the OpenSolaris box I have goes with it, I can simply
build a new OpenSolaris box and then restore my ZFS storage pool from backup.

[zfs-discuss] Deletion of file from ZFS Disk and Snapshots

2008-05-12 Thread Aaron Epps
This is a common problem that we run into and perhaps there's a good
explanation of why it can't be done. Often, there will be a large set of data,
say 200GB or so that gets written to a ZFS share, snapshotted and then deleted
a few days later. As I'm sure you know, none of the space is returned to the
pool since the bits on disk are still being referenced by the snapshot. Is
there any way to delete a large set of data both from the disk and from any
snapshots that may reference this large data set?

Re: [zfs-discuss] ZFS Administration

2008-04-10 Thread Aaron Epps
I would think that as an administrator of a ZFS storage pool, part of your
administration would consist of setting up snapshots at various intervals for
the different file systems. This functionality seems like something that should
be added to the web-based admin tool. Again, I'm comparing ZFS to what NetApp
currently offers, and they do indeed offer a web-based tool to configure the
frequency of automatic snapshotting on volumes.

Re: [zfs-discuss] ZFS Administration

2008-04-09 Thread Aaron Epps
Thanks for the info, it looks like this is exactly what I need. However, I'm
curious as to why the guys at Sun that are working on this aren't building the
ZFS GUI Administration into the existing, web-based ZFS Administration tool? It
seems that they're developing a GUI for the GNOME desktop. Anyone know why this
is?

Oh, one more thing

 - a tool to schedule the deletion of snapshots (Keep the past 14 Daily, 4
Weekly, 6 Monthly, etc.)
