How close is http://linuxcnc.org/docs/html/man/man9/oneshot.9.html to what you
need? Should we possibly extend it for whatever is missing? And/or should the
description of oneshot improve?

Not a lawyer, and I did not have a look into that package, but in Germany, in
part also because of our
censoring-and-we-punish-your-family-if-we-cannot-get-you-for-it past, it is
unlikely that you are censored as long as this is satire - and fortune-off from
the descriptions given I consider to qualify. Also, just wait until we are
sued, then we know.

The main concern I understood to be that our community would see some damage by
such an exceptional package being redistributed. But I do not see that.

That is is bit off. The question would be if Debian would decide to
redistribute it. I have my full trust in our FTPadmins that this would not
happen, though. That package would be a bit sick, also a fortunes-meinkampf
that comes up with random quotes from it. There are many differences between
redistributing that with redistributing anything like fortunes-off, the most
important one to me is "intent".

But if there was something like fortunes-rickygervais - oder
fortunes-jordanpeterson - not? Even though those two are triggering many
feelings.

I would leave that fortunes-off package in. And I just hope for some
self-censoring that keeps the trolls in us in check so we can delay discussing
what we are discussing here.

I do not get all the details but I tend to think that an external build service
would free energy for us to concentrate on LinuxCNC itself, so I am very much
up for it.

Found it. Thank you for the pointer. That repository features a branch
"bookworm" next to a branch "buster", nothing for "bullseye".

I am tempted to suggest that the LiveCD may run with bookworm. My line of
thought is that when we release, bookworm will already be "frozen", such that
the parts of Debian we are using are unlikely to see much of a change until the
release gets out.

[Emc-developers] Plans for the USB sticks anyone?

2022-11-14 Thread Steffen Möller
Dear all,

I keep thinking that we are releasing two different things together
a) LinuxCNC
b) the Live USB stick with LinuxCNC (and other useful or eye candy bits) on it

Is there any "production team" for b) already? I would like to discuss what is
missing and/or should be updated.

The .deb-building I suggest to copy from the ci.yml file
(https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/blob/master/.github/workflows/ci.yml):

eatmydata apt-get --yes --quiet build-dep --arch-only .
eatmydata debuild -us -uc --build=any

The debuild (or dpkg-buildpackage) is executed from within the source tree.

The primary challenge for the build bots may be to place the resulting .debs in
a location from where they can then be installed with apt. I have no idea how
the current system does it.

I'll give it a try. How this works is that I take the version that arrived in
bookworm and upload that to stable-backports. More on

be the problem.

Re: [Emc-developers] 2.9 Release Manager Required.

2022-11-12 Thread Steffen Möller
@Andy, @John, others (? Rene and Chris come to mind), I happily help you
through the steps to become a Debian Maintainer
(https://wiki.debian.org/DebianMaintainer) and with some good confidence so
does Petter. Just ping me.

Concerning what OS platform to use for LinuxCNC, what we should possibly do is
to prepare a questionnaire and have the users mailing list decide about what
the USB stick should run on. After all, it is them who need to install it/buy
new computers if we demand too much. Or we do multiple ISOs, i.e. one for
Buster, one for Bullseye, and one for Bookworm. And then we learn from the
download stats.

Should we possibly just prepare an alpha release and look how far we get with
what we have? And offer a public .iso for that?

Best,
Steffen

The Debian Build Demons can be inspected on
https://buildd.debian.org/status/package.php?p=linuxcnc but only work with the
packages for unstable. So, we can use them but would not get the insights for
the older distributions that I learned LinuxCNC to be used a lot with.

What is it you want to know?

> It kind of makes sense if the future is debian.

The future for the automated builds? That could be a plan. Problems with that
is that to test if a package works on a distribution you need to upload to that
distribution. And if there then was a problem, you will only find that after
package was uploaded. For unstable that is not too bad, but for backports to
stable, the current buildbot situation may be preferable prior to an upload. We
have the Github autobuilds that help.

We could upload backports of LinuxCNC to Debian stable and see how this works.

I agree, it would be good to meet. Should we not meet up in your home town,
Andreas? (Or Nilesh?)
I could collect Nilesh from the Frankfurt Airport to guide him to your
mountainous hideout.

Alternatively I would contact a few institutes in Germany that perform Covid 19
research on live viruses and ask them if they would host us - Hamburg, Berlin
or some of this historically cool places like https://www.fli.de/ (built on an
island with a purpose).

Best,

When True, counts and position are rounded or reset
(depends on index-mode) on next rising edge of channel-I.
Every time position is reset because of Index, index-enabled
pin is set to 0 and remain 0 until connected HAL pin does
not set it.

## Source string

HOME_USE_INDEX requires connections in your HAL file to joint.n.index-enable
from the encoder.n.index-enable.

## Source string description

type: Plain text

## Comment

The documentation typically abbreviates axes in pin names with capital 'N's,
and joints with capital 'L's, if my short term memory serves me right. The
joint.n.index-enable should be joint.L.index-enable (ok, joint. _L_.index-
enable for the extra eye candy), and I think it would be helpful if an encoder
representing a joint would get the same variable symbol, i.e. encoder.L.index-
enable instead of the '.n.'.

## Source string

String defining ON color of LED.
May be any valid gdk.Color name.
Not working on Ubuntu 8.04.

## Source string description

type: Plain text

## Comment

I suggest to update to some positive wording (as in working since Ubuntu 9+)
and a reference to a list of colors that can be used.
<https://docs.gtk.org/gdk3/struct.Color.html> comes to mind, which states that
this is deprecated?!?

Things are not this way currently in the joints-axes branch, but deviations
from this design are considered bugs. For an example of such a bug, see the
treatment of axes in src/emc/ini/initraj.cc:loadTraj(). There are undoubtedly
more, and I need your help to find them and fix them.

The joint-axes dev branch was merged for 2.8 if I got this right. Please
someone update this section who knows more than me.

'M0' - pause a running program temporarily. LinuxCNC remains in the Auto Mode
so MDI and other manual actions are not enabled. Pressing the resume button
will restart the program at the following line.

## Source string description

## Comment

I am unhappy with the term "restart". That would imply that something would be
"re"-executed, which is not the case, and variables are not affected, either.
I would prefer "the execution of that program continues in the following
line."

Bug#1014274: yosys RM of s390x should be requested, too

2022-07-17 Thread Steffen Möller

Dear all,

The s390x package of yosys is no longer built, either, and should hence
also be removed, see https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/yosys . Does this
need a separate RM?

Many thanks!

Steffen

Yes, that should be fine. I may have missed that one, but I typically put
µs and µm whenever I encounter them.

May be something else to put into the style guide.

Re: [Emc-developers] [Hosted Weblate] New comment in LinuxCNC/LinuxCNC Documentation

2022-07-14 Thread Steffen Möller

The bug was in libtiff, not with linuxcnc. In some deeper theory nothing
was required for us to do, but nobody closed that bug. I have done that
now by an email to 1012789-d...@bugs.debian.org but do not see this as
closed in the bug system, yet.

I do not understand this sentence.

And I don't understand what we are meant to do with these emails.

I see no way to reply to the comment.

It's the description of an index-enable pin. It works exactly the same
as any other index-enable pin.

## Source string

'(funct) pwmgen.make-pulses' - High speed function to generate PWM waveforms
(no floating point). The high speed function 'pwmgen.make-pulses' should be
run in the base (fastest) thread, from 10 to 50 us depending on the
capabilities of the computer. That thread's period determines the maximum PWM
carrier frequency, as well as the resolution of the PWM or PDM signals. If the
base thread is 50,000nS then every 50uS the module decides if it is time to
change the state of the output. At 50% duty cycle and 25Hz PWM frequency this
means that the output changes state every (1 / 25) seconds / 50uS * 50% = 400
iterations. This also means that you have a 800 possible duty cycle values
(without dithering)

nS and uS are nano- and microseconds, right? I suggest to be consistent with
lower case s and a blank between the number and the unit.

This is unexpected. Radial is the default for these functions about
everywhere
else. This should be made more explicit.

I would imagine that most CNC operators will expect degrees. Can you
imagine trying to type in a right-angle in MDI in radians?

G1 @20 ^ 90

is far more practical than

G1 @20 ^ 1.570796327

I agree with Andy on this one Steffan, for CNC, radians is a PITA.
My current project is a hard maple vise screw, about 18.5" inches
long. To carve a
2 start, 12mm pitch thread is 187,000 degrees, LinuxCNC tracks that
perfectly. As a
retired broadcast engineer, everything I've had to do has always been
done in degrees.
Including measuring guy wire tensions by the intercept method using a
riflescope is
SOP.

Uh, sorry, missunderstanding. I was spending too much time in weblate
and forgot how this may be read without that documentation-context. I do
not suggest that you should change the function, my comment only refers
to the documentation that should explicitly state 0-360 or something to
render it absolutely clear to everyone. But admittedly I still hope to
find the constant Pi defined somewhere and then 90 is about as easy as Pi/2.

Cheers,
Steffen

The available functions are shown in following table. Arguments to unary

'O- Call' takes up to 30 optional arguments, which are passed to the
subroutine as '#1', '#2' , ..., #N. Parameters from #N+1 to #30 have the same
value as in the calling context. On return from the subroutine, the values of
parameters #1 through #30 (regardless of the number of arguments) will be
restored to the values they had before the call. Parameters #1 - #30 are local
to the subroutine.

It should be explained what "being local" means, i.e. can be changed in the
subroutine but have no effect outside that subroutine.

'G28 axes' - makes a rapid move to the position specified by 'axes' including
any offsets, then will make a rapid move to the 'absolute' position of the
values in parameters 5161-5166 for all 'axes' specified. Any 'axis' not
specified will not move.

## Source string description

type: Plain text

## Comment

It may just be me, but I had read this wrong. Coming back with what I learned
from the context of the example line, the G28 command gets parameters for a
set of axes and that set of axes determines which axes are moved according
those global variables. Please somehow rephrase that to be less ambiguous.

I just checked with the latest upload of libtk-img - it got fixed, i.e.
the version prior to Jeff's fix works again. This means we can just
close the bug.

Harmless. Mostly :)

When there is a bug to a package that is not fixed then the package is
removed from the testing distribution of Debian that is the next stable
release. And with it all packages that depend on that package need to
go. Such removals are mighty annoying when the dependency just affects
some borderline use of some software. On the plus side, this gets things
fixed more quickly.

A removal from testing does not mean that it is removed from unstable,
i.e. the Debian distribution in which all uploaded packages appear
before 5 days later transitioning to testing. This (very ironic) renders
unstable sometimes more stable than testing.

The background to this bug is that there was this abi change to the tiff
library that affected the Img Tk library. This was first spotted from
within LinuxCNC. I personally take this as an indication that LinuxCNC
is one of the most-used Tk applications these days :) It is not our bug,
though. And someone has already or is about to fix this.

Such incompatibilities happen all the time. It is the main purpose of a
Linux distribution to spot these and fix them. With LinuxCNC now being
part of the very latest of Debian in Debian unstable (and unstable+5
bugfree days = testing) LinuxCNC is more exposed to this
distribution-development. A year from now the current testing
distribution will be frozen, i.e. no more uploads and thus no more
sudden incompatibilities, and after loads of bug fixes released as the
new stable.

Best,
Steffen

Linux distribution to spot these and fix them. With LinuxCNC now being
part of the very latest of Debian in Debian unstable (and unstable+5
bugfree days = testing) LinuxCNC is more exposed to this
distribution-development. A year from now the current testing
distribution will be frozen, i.e. no more uploads and thus no more
sudden incompatibilities, and after loads of bug fixes released as the
new stable.

Best,
Steffen

I thought that 2.9 was going to continue to support Buster?

No idea if it is worth the effort, but we can provide an RTAI .deb for
debian-backports-buster that has a different package name, i.e. that
does not appear on the current stable release of Debian (bullseye), just
the orig.tar.gz must be the same throughout.

Re: Covering visa fees as part of flights+accommodation expenses for events

2022-06-27 Thread Steffen Möller

This had mixed results, for one, people who had their visa's covered
in the past may have been surprised to learn that this time round they
suddenly had to pay $100-200 that they thought would have been covered.

Furthermore, visa requirements tend to affect people from less
privileged countries the most. If we're serious about diversity, I
think that we should include covering the visa fee if we offer
travel+accommodation by default, and that this should be the default
for DebConf going forward, and ideally for all Debian events.

A conference is about rendering us all mostly equal - some location,
same food, same discussions. Diversity would also include those who
cannot travel, or who cannot travel alone. I am fine with paying all
travel-associated costs, but not because of diversity, please. Just call
if "fairness" or "equal opportunity" or whatever.

I realise I have some bias here, I myself come from a country where I
need a visa nearly everywhere I want to travel to, but I do think that
including visa fees by default will help making Debian easier to
contribute to for people who come from such countries, and ultimately
have a small role in helping us expand to more areas and improve our
diversity.

You mean global coverage.

I agree that it would help the project to have direct contacts to many
regions in the world.

If you added backlash you need to increase the STEPGEN_MAXACCEL up to double
the MAX_ACCELERATION in the AXIS section of the INI file for each axis you
added backlash to. LinuxCNC uses "extra acceleration" at a reversal to take up
the backlash. Without backlash correction, step generator acceleration can be
just a few percent above the motion planner acceleration.

The problem was also reported on
https://forum.linuxcnc.org/9-installing-linuxcnc/45634-current-master-2-9-building-debs-error
and I can confirm this locally. Above URL points to my changes to
debian/rules in https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/pull/1700 that have
not yet been merged with master. I need to investigate. Help would be
appreciated.

Thank you for looking at this!

(My purpose reporting here is the understanding that we're trying to debug
to get sid into stable Bookworm with LinuxCNC, and I also want LinuxCNC
working on my little SBC.)

This is potentially helpful, but doesn't immediately clear things up for
me...

Here's what I did after getting this email:

I found the following libtiff packages on my SBC:
libtiff-dev 4.4.0-2
libtiff5 4.4.0-2
libtiffxx5 4.4.0-2

When I search the debian repository, it lists these as unstable (I presume
because we're on sid).
But it also lists them as the most recent releases, not the releases from
Buster (4.2.0-1).

Trying to follow the threads further, I went after the error message you
pointed out and saw it's trying to get: libtifftcl4.1.0.so

I searched the debian repository and nothing by the name of libtiffcl4
exists:

"You have searched for packages that names contain libtifftcl in all
suites, all sections, and all architectures.
Sorry, your search gave no results"

Interestingly, the Sourceforge branches for tkImg does not have a *branch*
for 1.4 (which appears to be what the line above is looking for)
https://sourceforge.net/p/tkimg/code/HEAD/tree/branches/

But there *is* a version 1.4.13 under tags:
https://sourceforge.net/p/tkimg/code/HEAD/tree/tags/1.4.13/

I downloaded that 1.4.13 source and used MS Code to search the downloaded
source and found a piece of code compat/libtiff/libtiff/libtiff.map that
has the string " LIBTIFF_4.0" in it.

I found 8 files that have _TIFFsetString in it.

But I don't understand the compiling setup well enough to see how those
files get compiled to create an object named libtifftcl4.1.0.so (??)

(there is no string in the source for libtifftcl4)

I'm happy to try and dig further, but I'm also at a stop point.

This looks to be a dependency (hard coded?) on the version of libtiff
that shipped with Buster (4.1).

But it also seems to be in a package that LinuxCNC depends on, but
doesn't control?
https://sourceforge.net/projects/tkimg/files/tkimg/1.4/tkimg%201.4.13/
(From the file path being searched)

For me, the trail dries up there. I guess this is due to a Tcl/Tk
dependency?

[Emc-developers] Protocol on Google Docs Re: LinuxCNC online meeting - 13th of June (next Monday) 20:00 CEST was: "doodle" to set time for a LinuxCNC online meeting

Dear all,

On
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1aWMxBY8IbCYXFLFvjgqUXZ09inZp5u0r-pZcjeb2bWk/edit?usp=sharing
you find a protocol of our meeting. It is not complete, but good enough
that none of the participants wanted to change it much more - thanks go
to Silopolis and Hans for additions+feedback.

I do not mind if you guys start commenting on it. This would be a great
preparation for a next meeting, which will be orchestrated by Rene. We
are aiming at about 4-6 weeks from now.

My idea is to address the most important bits first and after max two
hours we should stop talking and continue coding. I have yet no idea
what the most important topics are, so we would basically set our agenda
when we get together. We should also find someone to prepare a protocol
for the list. We likely have too many presentations in our day jobs

to talk about then this would be appreciated.

## Source string

Implicit tests for zero should not be used except for boolean variables. e.g.
if (spindle_speed != 0) NOT if (spindle_speed)

## Source string description

## Comment

Comparisons with 0 for floats is of course problematic, but for integers? This
needs an explanation.

[Emc-developers] LinuxCNC online meeting - 13th of June (next Monday) 20:00 CEST was: "doodle" to set time for a LinuxCNC online meeting

2022-06-10 Thread Steffen Möller

Dear all,

I waited a bit long, sorry for that. Numbers have not increased much,
but anyway it should be a fun time together. So, the upcoming Monday,
20:00 CEST I hope to find many of you on
https://jitsi.debian.social/LinuxCNC-up-up-and-away .

My idea is to address the most important bits first and after max two
hours we should stop talking and continue coding. I have yet no idea
what the most important topics are, so we would basically set our agenda
when we get together. We should also find someone to prepare a protocol
for the list. We likely have too many presentations in our day jobs
already but when you have diagrams or pictures for/of whatever you want
to talk about then this would be appreciated.

Best,
Steffen

This document describes how to build the LinuxCNC software and documentation
from source. This is primarily useful if you are a developer who is modifying
LinuxCNC. It can also be useful if you're a user who is testing developer
branches, though then you also have the option of just installing Debian
packages from the buildbot: http://buildbot.linuxcnc.org

On a run-in-place system (e.g. the one you just got out of git), the runscript
is `scripts/linuxcnc`. + When you just checked out a fresh copy of LinuxCNC,
you'll see there is no `scripts/linuxcnc`, just a `scripts/linuxcnc.in`. By
running `configure` that one will get changed to `scripts/linuxcnc`. +
`configure` will also replace some default values for your system (folders,

[Emc-developers] "doodle" to set time for a LinuxCNC online meeting

2022-06-01 Thread Steffen Möller

Dear all,

a couple of weeks the folks who are working on the docs-devel branch of
LinuxCNC have synced online. This was a very nice ~2 hours we had
together and so we had decided to repeat that with a larger crowd. This
is an invitation to what basically is an open mike session. To find a

please describe your preferences.

To give our meeting just a touch of a structure I kindly ask to send me

Re: Accepted ebook-tools 0.2.2-5 (source) into unstable

2022-05-29 Thread Steffen Möller

On 29.05.22 19:06, Aaron M. Ucko wrote:

Debian FTP Masters writes:

  executable & manpage.

I appreciate the thought, but ncbi-entrez-direct goes out of its way to
avoid any such conflict: it diverts epub-utils' instances of those
files, substituting a wrapper script that takes advantage of major
command-line syntax differences to determine which tool the user
presumably meant to run (and a manpage that notes the diversion).
AFAICT, this arrangement works fine; have you found otherwise?

FTR, there's a similar situation around efetch, where both executables
come from biology-related packages where a conflict would be more of a
problem: acedb-other and ncbi-entrez-direct (with the latter taking care
of deconflicting in the same fashion).

acedb-other shall step behind anything that is offered from the NCBI
realm, I suggest.

Many thanks!
Steffen

[Emc-developers] Fwd: DebConf22 bursary applications and call for papers are closing in less than 72 hours!

2022-04-28 Thread Steffen Möller

Should there be someone on this list who would like to talk about
LinuxCNC at the next DebConf - here is your chance. I was hoping for
Sebastian, Jeff and/or Andy to go for it, but time is a scarce resouce,
I know. Travel expenses I expect to be covered also for
not-yet-Debian-Developers.

Best,
Steffen

Hi,

If you intend to apply for a DebConf22 bursary [1] and/or submit an event
proposal [2] and have not yet done so, please proceed as soon as possible!

[1] https://debconf22.debconf.org/about/bursaries [2]
https://debconf22.debconf.org/cfp

** Bursary applications for DebConf22 will be accepted until May 1st at
23:59
UTC. Applications submitted after this deadline will not be considered.

You can apply for a bursary when you register [3] for the conference.

[3] https://debconf22.debconf.org/register

Remember that giving a talk or organising an event is considered towards
your
bursary; if you have a submission to make, submit it even if it is only
sketched-out. You will be able to detail it later. DebCamp plans can be
entered
in the usual Sprints page at the Debian wiki [4].

The issue of an issue? It is like a blog post.

a) You get an account on github.com

b) Go to the LinuxCNC project page https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc

c) Click on "Issues"

d) Click on "New Issue"

e) Edit the title and the main text as you see fit

What about doing something even simpler - rather than having additional
generic/core tags/teams/groups, for packages where one wants to say
"please help yourself/ourselves", simply set the Maintainer field to
debian-devel@lists.debian.org, have the Salsa repository in the debian/
namespace, and that's it? From thereon, anyone can do team-uploads by
pushing to salsa and uploading directly, no need for
acks/delays/permissions/requests.

A simpler solution sounds good to me, except that change would be
somewhat "permanent" in stating the original maintainer's preference.
I forgot to mention in my original post that the tags can optionally
expire.

So, things like, `tag all my packages as "feel free to nmu" within
the next two weeks` would be trackable.

The only extra request from my side would be for salsa-maintained
packages to havet the NMU not bypassing the version management.

Was hoping for some external input. To mind come:
 * monitoring systems (I know of a provider of professional wind
turbine monitoring systems that reside on the wind turbines and run Debian)
 * billing systems for community-organised shared resources

I presume that most software tools that ship with inverters, power walls
etc are just accessible via some web interface. Nothing too much for us
to do, I presume. But whenever there is an Open API etc we could
possible point to such a Debian-compatibility.

Cheers,

2022-04-13 Thread Steffen Möller

The idea is good.

There is Debian as an organisation that could immediately shift activity
towards renewable resources. There are carbon neutral compute centers.
And there is something close to carbon neutral travel if investing extra
money in these tree planing institutions.

An interesting reference is IKEA
(https://www.triplepundit.com/story/2021/ikea-renewable-energy/718146),
producing more solar energy than it uses.

While I see no problem with the services of Debian to turn carbon
neutral, Debian should think of ways not to end here. What else could we do?

Hi all,

via my company Fre(i)e Software GmbH [1], I would like to sponsor
Ukranian i18n work.

If you know anyone who is good in English and fluent in Ukranian,
please forward this proposal to them. The person must be open to using
tools like Weblate, Transifex and possibly also poedit (for
translating debconf templates).

If you know anyone eligible and forward this mail to them, please also
be available for presenting a short reference for that person. Thanks.

The starting budget will be equivalent to a German Mini Job (450,-EUR

(temporarily) resident in Germany and must have a work permit for
Germany.

Once somone has been found for this position, we will announce this in
greater public and see if more funding can be scraped together.

[Emc-developers] Quick update on the status of the Debian package

2022-04-07 Thread Steffen Möller

Hello,

I have mentioned this on Rod's github issue on his package woes
(https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/issues/1692) but some more of you
may want to to have a look. The LinuxCNC Debian packaging needed to
adapt to the partial builds (documentation is only built once, not for
all of Debian's platforms) of the Debian autobuilders but now it is
fine. LinuxCNC built for 14 different platforms
(https://buildd.debian.org/status/package.php?p=linuxcnc) and while RISC
V likely has everyone's attention, IBM's big iron s390x seems less
interesting for us.

If nothing happens then the package is expected to migrate to testing
within the next 5 days. The "package tracker" on
https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/linuxcnc gives a good overview. If it is
easy for you then some feedback would be nice. For me, this is just some
technical exercise, still. Please do not use this version in production.

Best,
Steffen

I wondered how relevant using an ISO to try before buy was with
VirtuaBox and VMware Player allowing virtual machines.
I thought I'd be smart and see how long it took to install Debian onto
VMware Player. It took 4 minutes to find and install VMNWare player and
8.5 minutes to install the Bullseye.iso and be at the command prompt

I then upgraded to unstable (sid) to time an installation Linuxcnc.
This ended badly with broken dependencies:
Depends: python3 (< 3.10) but 3.10.4-1 is to be installed

Python versions in Debian versions are shown here:
https://packages.debian.org/search?suite=default=all=any
earchon=names=python3 So until Linuxcnc-uspace migrates from
Sid (unstable) to Bookworm (testing), all the hard work on getting it
into Debian has been wasted. Unless we change the dependencies to
allow Python3 > 3.9

Which is what I've been saying since a few days after bullseye was
released with pyhon-3.9.2. So I can't build it on raspios bullseye from
git.

In Debian unstable, the default Python was just upgraded to 3.10, so the
discrepancy between the max version available (3.10) and the default
python (previously 3.9) is gone and the package compiles out of the box.

The package I uploaded to Debian has a tiny patch that disables the
search for 3.10, this one:

Now writing to this list, I should repeat to express my gratitude for
you having addressed this. As a quick executive summary of the context:
The upstream source tree is on https://github.com/qiime2/q2-composition/
with their vega-redistribution in
https://github.com/qiime2/q2-composition/tree/master/q2_composition/assets/ancom/js
:

vega-embed.min.js
vega.min.js

and this was added four years ago.

The qiime2 packages are about identifying bacteria and yeasts that live
on us and in us and to learn about how this changes when we get sick,
when we change the diet, when we get older, ... you guess it. Also in
agriculture, it tells how the soil's bacteria change when salts change,
temperature change, pesticides are applied, ... you get the picture.

and they are apparently using
https://github.com/vega/vega-embed which we yet do not have. However,
those embedded vega files will affect the presentation of the results
but not the results themselves and as such this package is already
useful. I propose to craft a bug report early about the package to
prevent its migration to testing and talk to upstream about.

If the package is useful, I don't see much of a problem if it migrated to
testing.

It is somewhat tough to promote our qiime2 packaging to end users if
they cannot be sure that they get the full reports. So, useful, I am
confident, yes. But you lose that extra confidence in the software that
should come with using a Debian package of it. This is why I would not
want the package to migrate early but we could get it in and have the
FTPmasters check it already.

But I agree that it makes sense to contact upstream to ask if they would
include vega-embed in the monorepo as well.

Or one work around (meanwhile to buy time) could be to include vega-embed
inside say, debian/resources

And do something like:

execute_before_dh_auto_configure:
 cp -a debian/resources $(CURDIR)/packages

I would not mind in the sense that it gives some confidence that our
package will behave exactly how upstream wants it to behave. On the
other hand, this is not how progress works. If we would find it
technically feasible to help qiime2 to update their code (does not look
like much) to become compatible with the latest version then we should
do that.

And so this would help get vega-embed as well.
Or in the worst case scenario, we could package node-vega-embed as a different
source package.

Since Vega is used by several qiime packages now, this seems like a good
idea, except for that version problem that I interpreted from what I
read in the sources. Now, the qiime packages would likely benefit from a
transition to a later version of the vega JS, if my interpretation was
correct in the first place and I am not confused over vega-embed, and
whoever finds the time may find it rewarding to sync with upstream about it.

Let me know what you think, and also, this conversation should not be happening

Please consider sending query about this to the pkg-javascript-devel mailing

Rod,

I wish some of our LinuxCNC Gurus would know some of the ROS Gurus and
jointly meditate over this. We should possibly not discuss this too much
as a sole CNC/robotics problem. This tech is useful whenever you need to
synchronize something between multiple machines/devices.

I truly don't know what we should be doing as a community. Anyone close
to ROS?

You have done some amazing work and we now know what we are dealing with
rather than just guessing as we've done before.

I think its not about the last 20 years but about the next 20. I think we
will see an increasing number of ethercat capable devices in use as more
vendors adopt the technology.
There are also an increasing number of linuxcnc users using the software on
commercial projects and retrofits of commercial machines.

ROS appear to be simply embedding the SOEM in a sub folder in their
ethercat master wrapper based on an article they link to in the readme. I
guess they can do this under the GPL.

Any restrictions appear to be placed on users of the technology, not the
software developer. Linuxcnc does not use software, our members do. This is
an important distinction.
I think this allows Linuxcnc to treat the proposed driver as being GPL'd at
a distribution level like ROS has.

Now we know of the SOEM's existence, it would be preferable to use it over
the IgH ethercat master if it's compatible with our architecture. It's a
much tighter integration then.

It's clear that membership is not required. I can't see any impediment to
building a separate repository like has been done with mesaflash that
embeds the SOEM like ROS has done. If the rules change, it will be simple
to excise the orphaned child or just remove the SOEM subfolder.

Re: [Emc-developers] EtherCAT - would not be a prob with free membership in EtherCAT Technology Group Re: LinuxCNC is in Debian!

2022-03-03 Thread Steffen Möller

Dear all,

I had a phone conversation with the EtherCAT Technology Group's
president, Martin Rostan, this morning. To get an impression, you find
him in this PodCast https://www.sps-magazin.de/podcasts/ (German). Mr
Rostan sends his regards, expresses that he has a heart for all the
mills and lathes in private cellars out there and for the enthusiasts
behind them. However, the initial information I received was wrong. The
ETG's statutes (Satzung in German) do not allow non-legal entities to
become members. Bummer.

Mr Rostan refrained from giving us any legal advise. That would be their
lawyers. But he took the freedom to point out that there are others who
are already shipping EtherCAT drivers and have not experienced any legal
problem at all - he just cannot make any promises of any sorts about the
future, say if their company is bought. Most notably there is ROS and
the idea is that we could learn from them. He knows that the important
bit is that
https://github.com/OpenEtherCATsociety/SOEM/blob/master/LICENSE is
redistributed with the package. This effectively means that users they
become aware of are requested to get that free membership and that does
not change if LinuxCNC is a member or not.

I propose that we look into what ROS has come up with. Otherwise, I do
not know what this means for us, except to take care not to mix the
EtherCAT codebase with the regular LinuxCNC. To avoid paperwork that
would not make much practical difference for anyone, we were discouraged
to register a newly formed society that could be a member. But there may
be other sorts of motivation to have something that can hold money for
LinuxCNC. User meetings come to mind, and then this organization could
also become a member as a side-event.

What now?
Steffen
