Sippel, Baytor and McMann to be inducted into ISF Hall of Fame
From: Mat Gentès mgentes(at)softball.ca Subject: Sippel, Baytor and McMann to be inducted into ISF Hall of Fame FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Sippel, Baytor and McMann to be inducted into ISF Hall of Fame November 2nd, 2005 (Ottawa) Softball Canada is pleased to announce that Lori Sippel (Stratford, ON), Terry Baytor (Brampton, ON) and Dale McMann (Prince George, BC) were all voted into the International Softball Federation Hall of Fame. The vote took place at the ISF Congress in Taiwan last weekend. The induction ceremony will take place on Canadian soil in 2006, the location and date has not been determined yet. Lori Sippel is arguably the most dominant softball pitcher in the history of Softball Canadas Womens National Team program. Sippel joined the team in 1983 as a 17 year old and helped Canada defeat the USA for a gold medal at the 1983 Pan American Games. For the next 15 years Sippel was the ace of Canada pitching staff including the Pan American Games (1983, 1987, 1991), World Championships (1986, 1990, 1994, 1998) and the Olympic Games (1996). Sippel also dominated on mound with club and university teams throughout the 80s and 90s. Sippel ended her career following the 1998 World Championships. In her final performance, she was nearly perfect pitching a 1-hit 1-0 victory over Italy to secure a spot for Canada in the 2000 Olympics. Sippel has already been inducted into Softball Canadas and the University of Nebraskas Halls of Fame and has had her jersey (#16) retired from both institutions. Sippel currently lives in Lincoln Nebraska and is the associate coach of the Nebraska Huskers and is the Head Coach of the Canadian Womens National Softball Team. Terry Baytor, born in Montréal, Quebec, was widely recognized as one of the most successful softball coaches in the world. As Head Coach of Canada's Men's National Team, he led his teams to gold medals at the 1992 World Championship and the 1991, 1995 and 1999 Pan American Games. Terry also led the National Team to a World Championship Silver Medal in 1996 and was assistant coach for two Pan American Games Gold Medals in 1983 and 1987. In 1992 he received the Coaching Association of Canada Coach of the Year award. He was inducted into the Softball Canada Hall of Fame in 1997, as a member of the 1983 Pan Am Men's Team. He entered Softball Canadas Hall of Fame as a coach in 2001. In 2003 Terry's #18 jersey was retired by Softball Canada. Terry currently lives in Brampton, Ontario and is a high school principal. Dale McMann is the former president of Softball British Columbia (1986-1989) and Softball Canada (1990-2001). While maintaining his Softball Canada Presidency, Dale ran for the Executive Board of the International Softball Federation in 1993. He was elected Vice-President North America, a position he still retains. Recognized for his insightful ideas and ability to get things done, Dale has been given an ever increasing portfolio of responsibilities. He has played a vital role in both the format and organization of World Championships and Olympic Games, chairs the most influential and important ISF outreach commission the Development commission, played an integral role in the establishment of the ISF headquarters in Florida and chairs or is a member of numerous other commissions and task forces. Softball Canada President Kevin Quinn comments on the inductees. Softball Canada is very proud to have these three outstanding individuals inducted as our representatives in the ISF Hall of Fame. They are great representatives of Softball Canada and are truly deserving of this great honour. Re: response to Tom Taylor rant - by Blair Setford
From: Setford, Blair blairjs(at)rogers.com 'aldoran' fastball(at)pmihrm.com, Subject: Re: response to Tom Taylor rant Date: Tue, 15 Nov 2005 09:51:38 -0500 Brian The ISC uses the ISF bat standards, NOT the ASA. So, contrary to your assertion, Softball Canada is now NOT in alignment with the premier men's fastball organization in North America. A simpler solution would have been to change the official ball to one with a different core (albeit one with the same C.O.R.). This seemingly makes much more fiscal sense than banning expensive bats in which teams and players may have already made a significant investment. Conversely, most teams and/or leagues buy their balls in the off season and can place their orders accordingly. Secondly, I take issue with your assertion that the ISC II is growing only at the expense of other organizations. NAFA AA recently completed a 29-team tournament, while NAFA A Major and NAFA A had a combined total of 81 teams. ASA B C had a combined 111 teams. The Western Canadians Senior B tournament remains a vital and strong 8-team tournament. The Eastern Canadians had either 7 or 8 teams in each of their three divisions. Please tell me which of these organizations, in your view, is suffering due to ISC II. In fact, with the advent of ISC II, I will point to renewed interest among intermediate level players throughout Ontario, in New York and Pennsylvania, Ohio and California, in Saskatchewan and Alberta, and now in Atlantic Canada. Canadian teams and players which have never had a true national (or international) championship at their level now have something to continue to play for. Players who may have left the game are staying put. Players who had left are returning to play. If there is to be growth in the men's game, it will be at this level and hopefully some of these teams will take the next step up to the ISC/senior ranks. Vancouver Grey Sox sign Mayson and Banner for 2006
From: Vancouver Grey Sox Fastpitch Softball Club vancouverchallenge(at)hotmail.com To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Vancouver Grey Sox sign Mayson and Banner for 2006 Date: Wed, 16 Nov 2005 21:21:48 -0800 Vancouver, BC The Vancouver Grey Sox are pleased to announce the signings of Derek Mayson and Brian Banner for the 2006 season. Derek Mayson, a resident of North Vancouver, BC was the top batter at the 2005 Canadian Junior Nationals, before joining the Grey Sox as a pick-up for the Senior Men's Nationals in St. Thomas, Ontario. Derek was very steady in his first appearance at the Senior Nationals, where he landed a spot in the heart of the batting order. Mayson, who is a pitcher along with being an accomplished infielder and dangerous hitter, is expected to provide depth and balance to the 2006 Grey Sox squad. Brian Banner, a resident of Victoria, BC, was a member of the 2005 Western Canadian Senior B Champions, Victoria Central Nine. In 2004 Banner suited up with the Victoria Travellers Inn team. A catcher, Banner is also being looked at to provide depth to the Grey Sox in the upcoming season. Grey Sox Field Manager John Stuart commented on the signings: Adding young quality players such as Derek Mayson and Brian Banner should improve our team and give us more options for our lineup in 2006. I know both of these young men quite well and have been impressed by their proven abilities, commitment and passion for the game, and I look forward to having them with our squad on a full-time basis next season. TidBits November 18, 2005
For those not familiar with tidbits, its ballyard rumours, nothing more. Maybe no fact here at all, but same kind of stories you hear in the ballpark. Only those mentioned can confirm or deny these stories, and traditionally they tell us nada, or hardly ever, but they can straighten the story out any time. We should add that there are guidelines for posting to the list and for submitting TidBits, see them at: http://www.alsfastball.com/webstart/news1.htm Subscribers tell me that TidBits is the most read and most popular of all the items we send out to our subscriber list. I am going to take advantage of that fact and ask that all subscribers take note that eScribe is still down, has been since about day two of the ISC's in Eau Claire, but we never missed a beat, thanks to Saint James of FastpitchWest.com, our good friend Jim Flanagan has provided us with an excellent back up site with http://fastpitchwest.com/alsfastball This is the time of the year when there is more talk than actual news, but since this is all we have for the news starved fans, here we go - and maybe just maybe the team organizers will let us know what is going on - informally or otherwise! TidBits from Wisconsin: Miljavac and LaLonde to Patsy's Ethier sticking with Aspen Folkard to Townline/Shoots Muizelaar to Patsy's Circle Tap on a major recruiting campaign. From elsewhere in the mid-west: Juna Pottolichio returning to Aurora DM Shamrocks. Aurora also replacing Tom Crouch (Gone to CTap) with DJ Cochs (ATMI) and PJ McKinney (formerly of Richwrap). Richwrap (Elburn-ISC II) looking for pitcher for the upcoming season. Possibly someone to relocate and live in area. NAFA World Series to coincide with Womens Pro League Championships which will also be in Kimberly. Karl Gollan to Midland Explorers Tim Jacobs back to Quad City Sox from Rockford Blackhawk Quinton Matzner to IS Knights And from Ontario: Many players looking to play at home in 2006, partly due to tired of travel; WT in Kitchener in August; and, the opportunity may be there with some local teams trying their best to hang onto the local talent. Jarvis hanging onto their big gun in spite of some tempting big dollars being thrown in the direction of Andrew Phipps to go south. He and his catcher brother are hanging tough with Jarvis - that's loyalty. Not so it seems with two of their Jarvis team mates, although Pat Graham and Ian Fehrman are headed north, and still in the province, but leaving their team a bit short. Graham was the first ever player approved by the league to play his league games at home in Jarvis and still hold an ISC card with another team - he played in WT in 2005 with RiverSharks... who are part of the Ontario team it seems, but more on that later. Watch for Ryan Thompson and John Brunton to join up with Jarvis for the year as well. Also rumours of a major coaching change in Jarvis, a big name we all know and watch for Adam Smith to become a playing coach. Also, Graham will be with the team for the Canadians. Maybe he can be talked into staying with the home team for ISC play as well. Its not over yet. The Six Nations (Ohsweken, ON) Chiefs had Darren Zack in 2005 for league play but he was with his Wisconsin team for most of the season and ended up not playing in the WT, much to the great regret of the fans who had hoped to see him play in Eau Claire. In 2006 Darren will be with the Chiefs all year so look forward to seeing him where ever the Chiefs go. Watch for a number of Newfoundlanders to be on this team, players we saw in Frankenmuth in 2005. There will be another senior team in 2006 out of Ohsweken, ON as well, the Red Men. Watch for Mike Joseph on this new team. The team everyone is talking about is not formalized yet but soon should be, and will probably play out of Owen Sound. The Owen Sound Select River Shark Smokers, or some derivation as Owen Sound was most recently connected with the Selects (and don't forget the Crunch), but the major influence of this new team will be Bob Nydick's River Sharks. But do not count out Peter J. Porcelli, II of the Smokers, etc. he is rumoured to be with the team as a consultant. So who is with this team? Good question, but this is what our cub reporters tell us: Management: Dennis Bruckert, head coach - late of Circle Tap Bob Nydick, general manager - late of River Sharks Peter J. Porcelli, II, consultant/coach - late of Calgary Diamonds Pitching Staff: Frank Cox - late of Calgary Diamonds Rob O'Brien - late of Circle Tap Michael White - late of Moorhead Imaging Solution Knights Other players: Sean O'Brien Mike Taylor Pat Graham Ian Fehrman Dan Loney This is sure to change, or at least a lot more names to be added. While many have told me where the 2007 ISC World Tournament will be played (now that Decatur is out of the picture) do not book your hotel yet, wait for the official announcement, there is lots of time left. But do book your hotel
Upsets in mens National League - NZ
Date: Sat, 19 Nov 2005 19:14:24 +1300 To: SNZ Media Release: ; From: Vance [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Upsets in mens National League Upsets in mens National League Saturday November 19th 2005 It has been a tough start to the New Zealand Community Trust mens National League for two time champions Auckland who suffered double defeat today at Rosedale Park, North Harbour today. In an upset for the form book North Harbour defeated Auckland 4-2 before Central Vikings continued the misery for Auckland with a 3-0 win. Against North Harbour the home side were the dominant team as they out hit Auckland 8-4 and made it count when it really mattered. North Harbour scored the wining runs in the seventh inning off the bats of Scott Higgins and Orlando Rodriguez. After taking the advantage in the top of the seventh inning North Harbour held strong in the bottom of the inning with NZCT Black Sox pitcher Jarrad Martin denying the Auckland hitters picking up two strikeouts to take out the game. Later in the day it was much the same story for Auckland as Central Vikings took the early advantage and refused to give it up. Central Vikings scored their first run in their opening at bat and then added another two in the second inning. Auckland who is usually so strong with the bat had no answers as they managed only two hits and no runs. Central Vikings were led on the mound by pitcher Hone Mark Sinnott who took seven strikeouts in the game. In other mens National League games today the power hitters in the Wellington team have been working overtime with a hard hitting 7-1 win over Central Vikings followed by an 11-1 victory over the home side North Harbour. Everything on the line for Southern Pride Women
Date: Thu, 24 Nov 2005 21:56:34 +1300 From: Vance vance(at)vanf-graphics.co.nz Subject: Everything on the line for Southern Pride Women Everything on the line for Southern Pride Thursday November 24th 2005 It will be a case of all or nothing for Southern Pride this weekend in the New Zealand Community Trust Women's National League as they look to make the most of home advantage to keep their finals chances alive. Although it is only week two of the league the Southern Pride side will have to record some victories this weekend at Saxton Park, Nelson in their final round robin games. If the southern team can't string together enough points this weekend their National League season will be over as they have no more round robin games to play and they will miss out on a place in the top four finals series. Southern Pride coach Kath McGilbert says the team are well aware of the situation but they are determined to put in some strong performances in Nelson. The opening weekend of the league where the Southern Pride side suffered some heavy defeats at the hands of Auckland and Wellington was a tough lesson for the team says McGilbert but she is confident the team are better for it. We grew stronger the whole weekend as a team, everyone got to know each other on and off the diamond and that is critical because it showed in the Sunday games where the score line was a lot better, said McGilbert. Going into this weekend Southern Pride will play Central Vikings in a double header on Saturday and then take on the defending champions Hutt Valley in another two games on Sunday. To keep their finals chances alive McGilbert says it is vital her team pick up at least two wins and if possible even some bonus points. I am quietly confident I believe we have got the goods in the team to do it. We need to fire with the bat like potentially I know we are capable of. McGilbert is also hoping the home advantage will prove a boost for the team which includes five Nelson based players. Draw Week 2 Saturday November 26th 2.00pm Central Vikings v Southern Pride, Saxton Field, Nelson. 4.00pm Central Vikings v Southern Pride, Saxton Field, Nelson. Elkland Resigns Pitcher for 2006 Season
From: Bruce Hackett brucehackett61(at)hotmail.com To: fastball(at)pmihrm.com Subject: Elkland Resigns Pitcher for 2006 Season Date: Tue, 29 Nov 2005 12:12:13 -0500 Elkland, PA- The Elkland Fastpitch Team finished probably their biggest jobs of the off-season with resigning their 19-game winner, pitcher Hugh Hillhouse of Erie, PA over the weekend. Hillhouse re-wrote the Elkland Fastpitch pitching record book last season, when he finished the season with 19-4 record, with 157 strikeouts and a 2.22 ERA in 26 games. During the season, Hillhouse began the year starting out with a 10-0 pitching record through the teams first 4 tournaments of the year. One of the more surprising aspects of Hillhouse's season was the fact that he pitched the last 3 tournaments of the season with a broken bone in his foot, after he suffered the injury during batting practice at the 2005 NAFA World Series. Hillhouse was unaware of the broken bone in his ankle until a trip to the doctors after the season. During those three tournaments, despite constant pain in his ankle, Hillhouse compiled a 6-2 record, with 60 strikeouts and a 3.25 ERA in 47.33 innings. Hillhouse took time to evaluate his options for the 2006 season, and entertain offers from other teams, but his desire to come back to the team out weighed his moving to another team. Over the course of the 2005 season, Hillhouse broke 3 single season team pitching records, including wins(19), strikeouts(157), and ERA(2.22). He also tied the record for overall pitching appearances (26). Hughie is a large part of our success over the last 2 seasons, says Elkland player/coach Bruce Hackett. Having him back with the club for next season is a very large part of the 2005-2006 off season puzzle, that is now solved. 2006 will be Hillhouse's 3rd full season with the team, after pitching for the team once during the 2003 season. Elkland finished 2005 with an overall record of 33-10 on the season. The team expects to play in a 10-11 tournament schedule in 2006, including a return trip to the NAFA A-Major World Series. More roster moves and possible team sponsorship news will be reported within the next month as details are known. Three wins for Black Sox - One game still to play
Date: Sun, 04 Dec 2005 14:52:38 +1300 From: Vance vance(at)vanf-graphics.co.nz Subject: Three wins for Black Sox - One game still to play Two wins for Black Sox in contrasting games Saturday December 3rd 2005 Power hitting has seen the New Zealand Community Trust Black Sox take two wins today over Samoa at Norana Avenue Ballpark, Auckland. In contrasting fixtures the opening game of the series went the way of the Black Sox 13-2 in five innings. But the second game was a whole lot closer with the game going down to the bottom of the seventh inning before the Black Sox could score the winning run to take the game 6-5. Home run hitting was a feature of game one as the Black Sox took the lead in the second inning via an automatic over the centre field fence by Patrick Shannon. This was followed up in the next inning when Daniel Milne repeated the dose smashing the ball over the left field fence. The defining moment of the game came in the fourth inning as the Black Sox displayed their true hitting power scoring 11 runs. Features of the hitting were two consecutive home runs by returning Black Sox Travis Wilson, a second automatic of the game to Patrick Shannon while outfielder Stacy McLean also collected an automatic over the right field fence. Samoa replied with two runs of their own in the top of the fifth innings but it wasnt enough and the game ended in the fifth inning with the mercy rule invoked as the Black Sox held an 11 run advantage. On the mound Black Sox captain Jarrad Martin had control of the game he faced 19 batters giving up three hits and one walk while taking two strikeouts. Samoa used three pitchers on the mound as they tried to stop the flow of runs. Heinie Shannon started the game, he faced 21 batters conceding eight hits and one walk while taking five strikeouts. Gerard Long came into the game in the fourth inning but he couldnt contain the Black Sox hitters as the first batter he faced was Patrick Shannon and he hit the ball out of the park. David Gollan relieved Long of the mound to close out the fourth inning. Game two of the double header was a much tighter affair as the world champion Black Sox had to come from behind to take the victory. Samoa took the early advantage in the third inning when Tony Niu, Bradley Annandale and Kurt Allan all crossed home plate. The Black Sox replied with interest in the fourth inning when lead off hitter Lyndon Andrew singled and then came home on an automatic by Gus Leger. This was followed by another automatic this time off the bat of Black Sox debutant Corey Matakatea to level up the scores. The Kiwis hit the lead for the first time in the game when Travis Wilson continued his fine hitting form again smashing the ball over the fence this time with Thomas Makea on base to give the Black Sox a two run advantage. Down but not out the Samoan team struck straight back scoring two runs of their own in the fifth inning to level up the scores again. That is how things stayed until the bottom of the seventh inning when with two down Lyndon Andrew picked up a walk and then scored on a hit by Gus Leger to centre field. Given the tight nature of the game Black Sox coach Eddie Kohlhase was forced to dig deep into his pitching reserves using three hurlers in the game. Tane Richardson started the game and faced 15 batters taking two strikeouts while giving up five hits. Thomas Cameron was introduced into the game in the third inning and he pitched two innings facing eight batters and giving up two hits. Veteran Black Sox pitcher Marty Grant closed out the game after being introduced to the mound in the sixth inning. He faced seven batters picking up two strikeouts while giving up one hit. For Samoa teenage pitcher Penese Iosefo started the game and he held the Black Sox hitters during the early innings. He faced 17 batters giving up five hits and two runs. David Gollan came into the game as relief pitcher for Samoa in the fourth inning and he faced 17 batters giving up three walks and two hits while taking two strikeouts. While the games may have been contrasting Black Sox coach Eddie Kohlhase was happy with the performance of his side as they scored 19 runs in two games with the only concern being the conceding of five runs in the second game. During the series we are looking to field four different teams over the four games and it is all about combinations. I am pretty happy, we have got a little bit to work on in terms of our pitcher/catcher combinations but we scored 19 runs today and you have got to be happy with that, said Kohlhase. With two wins today in the four game series Kohlhase says the team will be looking to repeat the effort tomorrow at Rosedale Park, North Harbour and make it a clean sweep of the series. New Zealand Community Trust Black Sox v Samoa Series results: Game 1 NZCT Black Sox 13 Samoa 2 (five innings). Game 2 NZCT Black Sox 6 Samoa 5. Black Sox send the

Stockford stepping up to head role with Junior Black Sox
Date: Thu, 22 Dec 2005 09:48:46 +1300 From: Vance vance(at)vanf-graphics.co.nz Subject: Stockford stepping up to head role with Junior Black Sox Stockford stepping up to head role with Junior Black Sox Thursday December 22nd 2005 Seasoned club and provincial coach Paul Stockford has this week been appointed to the head coach role with the Junior Black Sox. The position will not be entirely new to Stockford who has filled the position of assistant coach with the junior team in recent years and was with the team as they finished fourth at the world champs earlier this year. I was involved with the last Junior Black Sox campaign along with Mark Sorenson and Dion Nukunuku and I have had an involvement with the junior level of the game for the last four or five years. The position of head coach of the Junior Black Sox has been a goal for me and something I have aspired to over the last seven or eight years, said Stockford. Having been appointed to the position Stockford is now looking ahead to the next junior men's world championships which will be played in 2008 at an as yet to be named venue. Having been part of the Junior Black Sox campaign this year Stockford says he has a greater appreciation of what it takes to win the world title. We have to strive for excellence and we need to get our players to start their development at an earlier age and be committed to the campaign and the final goal. With 2008 in mind Stockford says he will be targeting and closely following the form of players currently participating in the under 16 age grade as he looks to name an extended training squad of 30-40 players. While based in Levin Stockford is currently coach of the Hutt Valley men's National League team and Hutt Valley club side Cardinals. Past coaching roles have seen him leading the New Zealand under 16 boy's team in 2003 while he has also coached Wellington to the men's National Provincial Cup title. Softball is a family game for the 39-year-old coach with son Kevin and daughter Katrina both currently representing Hutt Valley at a senior level. Lil Smokers Go to the Finals at the National's
From: PeterJPorcelli(at)aol.com Date: Sun, 1 Jan 2006 21:28:35 EST Subject: Lil Smokers Go to the Finals at the National's To: fastball(at)pmihrm.com Tampa Bay Li'l Smokers go to Final in National Tournament I know this is a softball list and I hope I do not try your patience when I gleefully report that the Tampa Bay Li'l Smokers, fire division AAU club baseball team have had a great run in the winter National Championship Tourney held each year during the last week of the calendar year in sunny Florida! There is not a lot of good news to report lately in our sport, mostly people jockeying for position, clout or political advantage, so I thought I would give you a bit of heart warming drama, like the type Hollywood used to craft and does so little of any more. This is the team my son, Trey played with until this fall season, when his mom and I decided to allow him to drop down to his own age group, yet still compete with the best players in the world, albeit with 11 year olds. When the decision was made, Trent Rubley, became the head guy on the field of this 12 and under team, and I dropped down to assistant. This enabled me to spend time watching my son play on the 11 and under East Coast Blue Devils going forward, and for Trent to take the Liâl Smokers on a crusade to see just how far they could go. When a coachâs son leaves, usually the team folds, but Trent I refused to look at these kids as road kill. They were not playing their butts off week after week and making great strides under Rubleyâs careful tutelage, just because my son was there. So we went forward this fall, and took on all comers. The regular season was filled with bitter lessons of what it is like to have lack of experience, what it means to practice good mechanics in games as well as practice, all without much return on the investment leading to the big climax of the season, the State National tourneys. It also was marked with the reality that if you are green and work hard, you will play and get the aforementioned hard lessons, while if you have talent and you refuse to work your hardest, you get left behind, either on the bench or off the team. Perhaps the hardest lesson these kids have to learn is that just because they sign up and just because you might make the team in try out, is no guarantee you will still be there after any given week if you do not produce what is demanded from you in effort and attitude. That being the case, the Liâl Smokers barely qualified for the Nationalâs after a mediocre State Tourney, finishing seventh, preceded by a less than spectacular 2-9 regular season. But that was all forgotten when the 10 remaining Liâl Smokers, who wear the identical uniforms the big Smoke Boys did, took the field this past week for a run at immortality. Originally the roster was 16, but Trent Rubley saw to it that overconfident cocky talent was told âDonât Bother coming,â that those who resented new players with less talent but strong desire were also left home, and even parents who thought their kids indispensable, were told they need not show up, and it was their job as parents to explain it to their sons, who their kids were really supposed have listened to on the field. That left the remaining ten eager faces with a seemingly bloated eight ranking and nobody to blame for whatever was going to happen as the tourney unfolded. In the round robin, the first game was a close win and a gratifying one, as the kids played well but the bounces did not go their way, yet they still prevailed. The next game saw the face the number three team and fight back from a 5-0 early deficit to lose 8-6 but make a statement, that the Smokers were there to play. I saw a spark there, and knew that this group was going to do damage. In the third and final round robin tilt, the number 2 team eked out a 2-1 win over the Liâl Smokers but another warning message had been fired over the bows of the respective competition for the little men in black. Because the Smoke Kids had not allowed many runs, they squeaked into the playoffs and played the very first playoff game on the same day as the round robin with just nine boys, as we had an injury to the heel of our catcher and regular season MVP. In that game the Liâl Smokers bats came alive in the fifth and final sixth inning and they ran away with an 11-5 win. That put us into the quarter finals against an undefeated number 4 team who had a first round bye and an entire day off. Well, we fell behind by a run, then two, and it seemed like lights out and an excellent effort with a familiar ending, when the coach of the opposing Diamondbacks decided to pull a âBarrie Penmanâ and try to run out the time allotment instead of pitch to our little but nervous boys. Day of upsets at womens NPC - NZ
Date: Tue, 03 Jan 2006 21:12:29 +1300 From: Vance vance(at)vanf-graphics.co.nz Subject: Day of upsets at womens NPC Day of upsets at womens NPC Tuesday January 3rd 2006 The form book was thrown out the window on day two of the New Zealand Community Trust Womens National Provincial Cup at Prince Edward Park, Papakura today. After a day of upsets only one of the 11 sides in the tournament can boast a perfect record. The unpredictable results started right from the first round of games today when defending champions Southland thumped Hutt Valley 16-6 but they couldnt back it up in the next round as the Southern side went down against the home team Counties Manukau 2-0. There was no predicting the results as the day continued as first Hutt Valley bounced back from their earlier defeat to end the unbeaten run of Canterbury 4-3. The team from the Valley couldn't continue their winning run though in their last game of the day going down to the home side Counties Manukau 5-2. It was not all good news for the home side today though because after securing two strong wins early in the day they couldn't finish it off in their last game losing to Canterbury 8-1. While the top seeds were suffering defeats the only team to keep their head above water and remain unbeaten was Auckland who won two games today 12-1 over Rotorua and 6-2 against Hawkes Bay. Round robin play in the womens NPC has now been completed and the top two teams from sections A and B will move on to a playoffs series over the next two days. The top two sides in section A are Canterbury and Counties Manukau while Auckland and Hawkes Bay qualify form section B. The remaining seven teams in the tournament will continue to compete over the final two days of the event for the minor placings. DAY 2 RESULTS Canterbury 10 Waikato 0, Southland 16 Hutt Valley 6, Counties Manukau 2 Southland 0, Hawkes Bay 10 Tamaki Makaurau 8, Hutt Valley 4 Canterbury 3, Auckland 6 Hawkes Bay 2, Wellington 9 Tamaki Makaurau 3, Waikato 15 Western Bay of Plenty 0, Counties Manukau 5 Hutt Valley 2, Wellington 13 Rotorua 2, Southland 14 Western Bay of Plenty 2, Canterbury 8 Counties Manukau 1, Auckland 12 Rotorua 1. Home side has high expectations at men's NPC - NZ
Date: Wed, 04 Jan 2006 17:57:29 +1300 From: Vance [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Home side has high expectations at men's NPC Home side has high expectations at men's NPC Wednesday January 4th 2006 Despite the fact Manawatu have never entered the New Zealand Community Trust Mens National Provincial Cup before that does not mean they wont be aiming for the title when the tournament starts in Palmerston North on January 7th. Manawatu go into the NPC tournament as the home team and the bottom seeds but they are not daunted by the task ahead of them. Team manager Graeme Love is adamant that Manawatu wont be there to just to make up the numbers. Any time we enter a tournament we are looking to take it out, we will take each game one at a time. Our aim is to win every game and eventually the tournament, said Love. As they compete for the title Love believes one of his sides strengths will be the combinations the players have worked on over recent seasons playing locally in Manawatu. The bulk of the players in our squad are Manawatu players who have been playing together for a long time so they know how each other plays. We are also on home territory so that is an added bonus. The NPC tournament which runs from January 7th 10th is seen as one of development for New Zealand Softball and because of that the main mens softball associations - Wellington, Canterbury, Hutt Valley, North Harbour and Auckland, are restricted to selecting players who are either under the age of 23 or were not protected players in the NZCT National League competition. All teams outside the main five have no restrictions on their selections. Wellington are the defending champions and they are taking a strong side to Palmerston North to defend the title. With pitching depth on the mound, current international Corey Matakatea in the outfield and a host of seasoned club and provincial softball campaigners backing them up Wellington will be tough to beat. Others sides expected to be strong include Hutt Valley who have new Black Sox pitcher Jeremy Manley on the mound. Auckland has a string of former Junior Black Sox players such as Jonathan Munden and Bernard Hale to call on. Canterbury U19 Boys win title with unbeaten record
Date: Thu, 05 Jan 2006 19:09:49 +1300 From: Vance [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Canterbury U19 Boys win title with unbeaten record Canterbury U19 Boys win title with unbeaten record Thursday January 5th 2006 It has been a victorious day for Canterbury at the New Zealand Community Trust Under 19 Boys National Championships as they have claimed the title with a 5-3 win over Wellington in the final this afternoon. Canterbury have been unbeaten throughout the tournament and in front of a home crowd at Canterbury Foundation Park, Christchurch they were determined not to fall at the last hurdle. The final was a tight affair with the home side having to come from behind to take the win. A three run onslaught in the top of the sixth inning was the winning of the game Canterbury as they went from being one run down to holding a two run advantage that Wellington couldnt pull back. Canterbury were the first to score in the game when lead off hitter Penese Iosefo came home on a sacrifice by Ihaka Davis in the top of the first inning. Wellington struck straight back though in their first at bat when Jake Jardine scored on a hit by designated player Mike Warr. Both sides scored again in the second inning with Iosefo crossing home plate for Canterbury while Gary Pointon scored for Wellington. The scores remained locked at 2-2 through to the fifth inning when Wellington took the lead for the first time in the game with Isaac Davis coming home on a hit by Lewis Temarama. Down but not out the home side struck straight back with interest in the sixth inning scoring three runs with Ihaka Davis, Callum Muir and Craig Higgs all crossing home plate to give Canterbury a two run advantage which they held for the rest of the game. A central figure in the game was Canterbury pitcher Penese Iosefo, on the mound he faced 28 batters giving up four hits and one walk while taking 12 strikeouts. With the bat Iosefo was just as influential picking up three walks from four at bats and scoring on two occasions. On the mound for Wellington was Vaero Hagai he faced 32 batters giving up seven hits and three walks while taking five strikeouts. Canterbury won their way through to the final with a comprehensive 6-2 win over Auckland in the playoff game this morning. Wellington had a tougher road to the final first they beat Hawkes Bay 10-2 and then they defeated Auckland 5-0 to book their final spot. Defending champs take a hit at mens NPC - NZ
From: Vance [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Defending champs take a hit at men's NPC Defending champs take a hit at men's NPC Saturday January 7th 2006 The defending champions Wellington have taken a hit on day one of the New Zealand Community Trust Men's National Provincial Cup at Colquhoun Park, Palmerston North today. The upset came in the last round of play today when Wellington was beaten by Hutt Valley Development 3-2. It was a game of missed chances for the defending champions as they out hit the Hutt Valley Development side 10-6 but they couldn't convert that advantage into runs. Wellington opened the scoring picking up one run in their first at bat. Hutt Valley Development struck back in the top of the second inning scoring three runs via a hit a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly. Wellington pulled back one run in the bottom of the inning but that was all they could manage the neither team scored again in the game. Jerome Smith was on the mound for the victorious Hutt Valley Development side while Craig Gibson pitched the game for Wellington. The victory by Hutt Valley Development sees them as the only unbeaten team in pool B as earlier in the day they also picked up a narrow 2-1 win over Rotorua. There are two unbeaten teams in pool B with Canterbury and Hutt Valley leading the way. Canterbury had two comprehensive victories today 7-0 over Nelson and 6-0 against Hawkes Bay while Hutt Valley battled out a couple of tight wins 3-0 over Nelson and 5-0 against Manawatu. Pool play in the men's NPC continues tomorrow with the key match up coming at 3pm when two of the unbeaten sides after day one Canterbury and Hutt Valley face off. I am honored to be offered the chance to work with the I.S.C, says Botkins, Believe me, I will try anyway I can to help keep the game going strong. Tommy Botkins began playing the game of fastball in 1992 for ODonnells Fastpitch from Hannibal. He played with that team for six years. 2006 AAU Team Profile - Fedlock Falcons, Wash D.C., Fedlock Midland Chicago

Perhaps the FedLock Falcon team name for the DisneyWorld 2006 AAU Tournament should read FedLock Midland Chicago. Two quality ballclubs are joining forces to journey to the warm temperatures of Orlando, Florida for a few days of top competition in January. The extended weather forecast predicts daytime temps to be in the mid-70 degree range. As long as it doesn't dip into the 30 degree range, as it did a few years ago in Orlando, the northern ballplayers will be quite pleased to be there. 2006 AAU FedLock is a combo platter of Midland players, FedLock players, and a sprinkling of old friends some new faces. Always, however, FedLock is made up of good people who play the game with class. Kyle Beane - UT -- Midland slugger, 4-time ASA Major All American, 2-time ISC All World, USA Team Pan Am Silver Medalist. Todd Moore - UT -- Young burner with veteran abilities from 4 ISC WT. Steve Horning - UT -- Longtime Captain of Midland Explorer, 6-time ASA Major All American. Steve Roberts - UT -- The Sarge, Midland's top RBI producer great clutch hitter. Sean Zaborowski - UT -- Veteran of 5 ISC WT, talented smooth. Ken Coles - UT-- 12-year FedLock vet, ASA All American, slick on the basepaths. Doug Sleep - P -- Too many awards to mention, always on a top ten Major squad for ISC ASA, USA Team, defines the word competitor. Dewey Dyck - P -- One of the top pitchers in Major, many huge years with Miller Toyota other top Major clubs. Leo Roman - P -- Excellent thrower for many years, outstanding Chicago chucker. Joe Hineline - P -- One of the USA's brightest pitching prospects at 17 years old, helped lead his team to top finish at 2005 Juniors. Luis Saldana - UT -- Superb slick Chicago product, plays anywhere. Tony Kahan - UT -- Veteran Chicago player, Team USA Maccabiah Gold Silver, personality plus. Steve Sell - UT -- FedLock Circle Tap backstop, led FedLock in hitting in Fargo ISC WT 2004. Paul Walford - UT -- Labeled by Jody Hennigar as the most complete player he's ever faced, Walley still plays every position well. Larry Hineline - UT -- Always a tough out, this veteran Baltimore player has played in dozens of ASA ISC competitions. Jody Hennigar - Coach -- The Legend has retired from active play, but will be along for his vast expertise. Mike Groves - Manager -- Just when you think you're out Looking forward to being in the ballyard. Doug Sleep
Subject: Doug Sleep Date: Sun, 22 Jan 2006 22:08:18 -0500 From: "Mike Groves" falcon(at)fedlock.com I've known Doug Sleep since he joined forces with FedLock in 2001 in our initial foray to the Dominican Republic to compete against the Dominican National Fastpitch Softball Team. Doug pitched FedLock to our first victory against a tough Dominican National Team that spring. I hold Doug Sleep in the highest regard as a ballplayer a teammate. I've competed against him all too often. He has joined up with FedLock at various times over the past few years, including his latest successful stint with FedLock at DisneyAAU 2006in Orlando. Doug's pitchingcredentials are impeccable. He's played top Major ball for many years. He's a former Team USA mainstay. A former Tampa Bay Smoker. He has traveled the world as a pitcher an instructor. He is a 110% teammate whose first interest is the success of the team, not himself. He is an excellent pitching coach mentor for young fastpitchchuckers. He wasasuccessful Division One women's fastpitch program pitching coach. To cut it dry it, wherever this high-calibre athlete goes, success follows. Quite frankly, if I had a ballteam this year, Doug Sleep would be on it. However, I do not have a team this year. Therein lies your opportunity. Doug is looking for a squad to pitch with in the 2006 campaign. His tel number is 571-282-9918. Email: usa4_99(at)yahoo.com. He will answer your inquiries. All too often I am asked to give recommendations for ballplayers. Too often, I cannot do soin good conscience. In Doug Sleep's case I consider it a pleasure. Aussie Steelers set for Commonwealth Championship
Subject: Aussie Steelers set for Commonwealth Championship Date: Wed, 25 Jan 2006 11:56:40 +1100 From: "DiAnne Lilburn" dianne.lilburn(at)softball.org.au Media Release 25 January 2006 Aussie Steelers set for Commonwealth Championship The Australian Open Mens softball team, Aussie Steelers, will face some of their toughest challenges during the Mens Commonwealth Championship which takes place today. Coming off a bronze medal win at the last World Series, the Aussie Steelers are taking a strong side with a mixture of experience and youth to compete against New Zealand, Samoa and South Africa. One of our major strengths is the diversity in our team. We have athletes that have been in the team for 12 or so years and juniors who are coming through the ranks after demonstrating their capabilities winning gold at last years Junior Mens World Softball Championship, said Mike Titheradge, Australian Open Mens Team Manager. Over the last five years, Softball Australia has redeveloped the mens program which has seen a significant increase in Australias performance in the international arena. With the success of our junior program and the influx of younger players coming into the program, athletes such as Andrew Kirkpatrick (ACT), Jeff Goolagong (ACT) and Kris Kiefel (VIC) have been achieving great results on the world stage. The squad of 20 who were selected during a national training camp in December 2005, have been undertaking an intense strength and conditioning program which will given them a significant advantage from previous competitions. The championship, which runs from 25-29 January at Altona in Victoria, will see the world's best, the New Zealand Black Sox, Samoa, South Africa and Australia ranked third. Spectators can look forward toseeing some of thehardest hitting and thefastest pitching(over 120kms) Australia has seen for years. Although New Zealand have been the ranked one in the world for many years, we are very mindful of the strengths of Samoa and also South Africa going into the championship. concluded Mr Titheradge. Australia is set to take on Samoa tonight at 8pm (AEST). Results and play-by-play reports will be emailed out after each Australian match and will also be available on the Softball Australia website www.softball.org.au AVAILABLE FOR INTERVIEW Mike Titheradge Australian Open Mens Team Manager Susan Crow Chief Executive Officer, Softball Australia DiAnne Lilburn National Communications Coordinator Softball Australia Suite 4, Ground Floor 38-40 Prospect Street Box Hill, Victoria 3128 T: +61 3 9890 8200 F: +61 3 9890 8295 M: +61 (0) 405 509 674 For more informationvisit www.softball.org.au _Did you know that Australia is the world's number one softball nation? Day One (Wednesday 25 January 2006) Results of Commonwealth Men's Fastpitch
Subject: Day One (Wednesday 25 January 2006) Results of Commonwealth Men's Fastpitch Championships Date: Wed, 25 Jan 2006 23:19:46 +1100 From: "DiAnne Lilburn" dianne.lilburn(at)softball.org.au Day One (Wednesday 25 January 2006) Results of Commonwealth Men's Fastpitch Championship Australia went down to Tanifa Samoa 5-2 in their opening game at the Commonwealth Men's Softball Championship being played at Altona, Melbourne, Australia The home team started well defensively with pitcher Andrew Kirkpatrick shutting down the Samoan batting line with 13 strikeouts from 18 batters faced. The Australian bats were the first to score with two runs in the fourth inning but left a further 5 runners on base. In the sixth inning, Duane Jerard started the scoring for Samoa with a long ball to the centrefield fence to score Bradley Annandale and Michael Niu. Kirkpatrick was replaced on the mound, but reliever Adam Folkard was unable to contain the strong Samoan batting lineup with Wayne Laulu, the first batter he faced, smashing the ball long over the left field fence for another two runs. Samoa added a fifth and final run in the seventh inning when Arran Neemia easily cleared the left field fence for a solo run. Earlier New Zealand Black Sox defeated South Africa with an impressive 7-0 mercy win in the bottom of the fifth. New Zealandâs, Jeremy Manley pitched strongly on the mound leaving South Africa scoreless. South Africa threatened to take a run off the World Champions in their last at bat, managing to get two runners on base, but were unable to capitalise and finished the game scoreless. The New Zealand bats were in good form, with the highlight a two run home run by Grant Roman in the fifth inning. Games for Thursday 26 January will see at 12 noon South Africa v Tanifa Samoa; 2.30pm South Africa v Australia; 5.00pm Australia v New Zealand; 7.30pm Tanifa Samoa v New Zealand (AEDT). Junior White Sox take step up in world champs preparations
Date: Thu, 26 Jan 2006 11:02:43 +1300 From: Vance vance(at)vanf-graphics.co.nz Subject: Junior White Sox take step up in world champs preparations Envelope-To: fastball(at)pmihrm.com Junior White Sox take step up in world champs preparationsThursday January 26th 2006Preparations for the 2007 Junior Women World Championships have taken a step up today with a naming of two Junior White Sox squads. A squad of 15 players and four non travelling reserves has been named today with the intention of travelling to Canada in July while an extended training squad of 29 has also been selected with the world champs next year in mind.Junior White Sox coach Lynda OCain says the squad to travel to Vancouver in July has been selected to compete in the Futures event at the Canada Cup. The Futures event is an international tournament for under 19 players bringing together international teams and top class American College and Canadian club sides. The trip in July will be the first time an under 19 New Zealand team has attended the event and OCain says it will be important in terms of the long term planning for the world champs while also giving the players some vital exposure to international softball of the highest level. The Futures tournament will give us a chance to see where we stand at an international level, where the gaps might be in our game and give us time to work on those things before the World Championships in 2007, said OCain. It will also give us an opportunity to look at some players more closely but by no means will exclude any member of the wider squad from being in the final team to travel to the World Championships in 2007.Included in the two squads named today are a number of players who have already had a taste of international softball with pitcher Jessica Hau, Amber Irving and Lara Andrews all having been part of the senior New Zealand Community Trust White Sox squad in recent seasons. In naming the extended squad OCain says the selectors has been looking for players who have a fairly complete game and while there are many players in the squad who offer versatility the key now will be working on combinations to get the best fit.JUNIOR WHITE SOX TOURING SQUAD FOR CANADA CUP: Pitchers: Ashleigh Harmer (Horowhenua), Courtney Maihi (Waikato), Jessica Hau (Hutt Valley).Catchers: Melanie Gettins (Hawkes Bay), Okawa Priest (Hutt Valley).Infield: Emma Frost (Canterbury), Courtenay ODonnell (Auckland), Katrina Stockford (Hutt Valley), Brooke Cutting (Wellington), Amber Irving (Auckland).Outfield: Liani Samuel (Hawkes Bay), Christina Paul (Canterbury), Lara Andrews (Hutt Valley).Utilities - Pauline Tahuri (Auckland), Carmelle Sorenson (Canterbury).Non travelling reserves - Sanita To'o (Wellington), Elisha Smith (Canterbury), Michelle Venemore (Auckland), Alysha Metuatini (Canterbury). Australia wins their first game at the Commonwealth Men's Fastpitch Championship
Subject: Australia wins their first game at the Commonwealth Men's Fastpitch Championship Date: Thu, 26 Jan 2006 18:34:07 +1100 From: DiAnne Lilburn dianne.lilburn(at)softball.org.au Media Release 26 January 2006 Australia wins their first game at the Commonwealth Men's Fastpitch Championship Australia has won their first game of the championship defeating South Africa with a run-ahead rule in the bottom of the fifth on day two of the Commonwealth Men's Fastpitch Championship. South Africa started well with a two run home run by Mark Olivier. Australia took to the plate and got a lucky run thanks to a wild throw to second followed by an error in the South African outfield. In the bottom of the second, Australia tied up the game thanks to a long ball over the rightfield fence from David Newsome. A combination of South African fielding errors and aggressive batting helped Australia score another three runs for a 5-2 lead. In the third inning, David Newsome crossed the plate on Michael Gibson's hit to centrefield. A pitching change for South Africa did not help with Australia extending their lead when Joel Southam hit a three run home run for a 9-2 lead. Adam Folkard in his third game for Australia, shut down South Africa's batting with seven strike-outs and forcing the run-ahead rule. Australia's next game is against the New Zealand Black Sox at 6.30pm (ADET). In an earlier game, Tanifa Samoa held out to beat South Africa in a tie-breaker 16-10. Battling the heat, Tanifa Samoa led early on with Wayne Laulu scoring a three run home run which helped Tanifa Samoa to score six runs in the second inning. South Africa managed to shut out Tanifa Samoa in the fourth scoring 4 runs bringing themselves back in to the game. It was another shut out innings in the fifth by South Africa and then a home run by Jonathan Viljoen scoring two runs to bring the game to a 10 all ball game. Both teams were scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings forcing the game to a tie-break. Tanifa Samoa proved too strong with the bat and overpowered South Africa to win the game by six runs in the eighth. Black Sox hold strong in tough tussle
Date: Fri, 27 Jan 2006 07:13:37 +1300 From: Vance vance(at)vanf-graphics.co.nz Subject: Black Sox hold strong in tough tussle Black Sox hold strong in tough tussle Friday January 27th 2006 The New Zealand Community Trust Black Sox have claimed their third win in the Commonwealth Championship this morning (NZ time) with a 5-3 victory over Samoa in Melbourne, Australia. It was a tight tussle against Samoa with the world champion NZCT Black Sox being made to fight all the way for the win. Samoa were the first to get runs on the board when Michael Fenton scored on a hit by Wayne Laulu in the top of the first inning. The lead didn't last for long though with the Kiwi side striking straight back in the bottom of the inning when Travis Wilson scampered home on a single by Patrick Shannon. A third inning home run from champion outfielder Thomas Makea set the game up for the NZCT Black Sox. With debutant Todd Grego and Bevan Martin on base Makea fired the ball over the centre field fence to score three runs. The Samoans weren't about to give up the fight though with Jeremy Stanley powering the ball over the left field fence with one runner on to peg back two runs and close up the gap to just one run in the fourth inning. The NZCT Black Sox added one more run in the fifth inning when Rhys Casley came home on a hit by Fabian Makea after originally getting on base via a double. On the mound for the NZCT Black Sox was Marty Grant who pitched the full game facing 28 batters giving up five hits and three walks while taking eight strikeouts. For Samoa Penese Iosefo started the game and faced 15 batters giving up three hits, one walk and one hit pitch while taking three strikeouts. Heinie Shannon replaced Iosefo on the mound in the fourth inning and he faced 14 batters and took four strikeouts while giving up two hits and two walks. The win against Samoa was the second win for the NZCT Black Sox on day two of the championship to go with an 8-5 victory over the home side Australia. The defeat of Australia required a come from behind effort from the NZCT Black Sox with a five run hitting spree in the bottom of the sixth inning proving the winning of the game for the New Zealand team. Stand out performers for the NZCT Black Sox against Australia were power hitter Travis Wilson who set the tone with the bat picking up two home runs and four RBI's from four trips to the batters box. Also making a difference was pitcher Jeremy Manley who was introduced into the game in the fourth inning and stopped the Australians flow of runs. With the win over Samoa the NZCT Black Sox are the only unbeaten team after two days with all sides having played each other once. Samoa are ranked second having had victories over Australia on the opening day of the championship followed by a marathon 16-10 tie breaker victory over South Africa. The home side Australia have one win while South Africa is still to register a victory. Day two of the championship has proved an eventful one with extreme heat, rain and a marathon opening game causing delays of up to two hours meaning the final game of the day between the NZCT Black Sox and Samoa didn't finish until after midnight (Australian time). Looking ahead to later today the New Zealand team have another two games they play South Africa at 2pm (NZ time) and then face Australia at 9.30pm (NZ time). During the championship all teams will play each other twice before the finals playoffs on Saturday and Sunday. Commonwealth Championship Results: Day 1 Wednesday January 25th New Zealand 7 South Africa 0 Samoa 5 Australia 2 Day 2 Thursday January 26th Samoa 16 South Africa 10 (tie breaker) Australia 9 South Africa 2 New Zealand 8 Australia 5 New Zealand 5 Samoa 3. Black Sox mixing it up but still keep on winning
Date: Fri, 27 Jan 2006 20:50:34 +1300 From: Vance vance(at)vanf-graphics.co.nz Subject: Black Sox mixing it up but still keep on winning Black Sox mixing it up but still keep on winning Friday January 27th 2006 The New Zealand Community Trust Black Sox have maintained their unbeaten run in their first game on day three of the Commonwealth Championship in Melbourne this afternoon with a 7-1 victory over South Africa. The starting line up that took to the diamond against South Africa today was without some of the familiar and experienced faces that normally lead the NZCT Black Sox team. Sitting on the bench were veterans such as Thomas Makea, Patrick Shannon and Brad Rona. NZCT Black Sox coach Eddie Kohlhase agrees that while in some positions the team had a new look to it today it is all about giving everybody in the squad game time and building playing depth to create more competition for places. We are holding firm to our desire to increase the depth and expose more players to international softball. We have fielded four different teams in our first four games and we will continue doing that during round robin play before looking to the top nine players for the finals, said Kohlhase. In what has been a feature of the NZCT Black Sox game in recent seasons the Kiwi side scored early against South Africa when in the bottom of the first inning Nathan Nukunuku came home on a sacrifice fly by Rhys Casley after originally getting on base with a walk. Another feature of the NZCT Black Sox game is power hitting and that came to the fore in the third inning when catcher Bevan Martin fired the ball out of the ballpark for a home run over the left field fence. Following that Stacy McLean picked up a walk and Nathan Nukunuku singled with both then scoring on a hit to NZCT Black Sox captain Jarrad Martin. South Africa pegged one run back and showed their own batting fire power in the fourth inning when Gareth Scott powered the ball over the right field fence for South Africa's first run of the game. The NZCT Black Sox went further ahead with two runs in the fourth as Todd Grego and Roman Gabriel both crossed home plate and added another in the fifth innings with Stephen Ratu getting on the score sheet. Controlling the game on the mound for the NZCT Black Sox was veteran pitcher Marty Grant who gave up few chances to the South African hitters. Grant faced 25 batters giving up three hits and one walk while taking nine strike outs. While the NZCT Black Sox recorded their fourth win today and are the only unbeaten team in the championship coach Kohlhase says the team have not had everything their own way. Against both Australia and Samoa yesterday the NZCT Black Sox had to come from behind to win and fight hard. We came from behind against Australia twice and we let both teams Australia and Samoa back into the game so that is something we have to understand and work on as a team, said Kohlhase. On the back of their victory over South Africa the NZCT Black Sox will be back on the diamond later tonight at 9.30pm (NZ time) when they take on tournament hosts Australia. **NEWSFLASH** Commonwealth Men's Fastpitch Championship Due to rain delay, play was postponed. The diamond is recovering well and play will most likely recommence at 7.30pm (AEDT). Australia and Tanifa Samoa will restart play at 7.30pm (AEDT) with Australia in the box at the bottom of the second. The scores are 0-0. The next game will then be Australia vs the New Zealand Black Sox. The Samoa vs South Africa game has been re-scheduled for 8.30 tomorrow morning. Vic Guth Men's Tournament - Results
Date: Sat, 28 Jan 2006 21:34:15 +1300 From: Vance vance(at)vanf-graphics.co.nz Subject: Vic Guth Men's Tournament - Results January 28 2006 National champion Ramblers, without injured Black Sox pitcher Thomas Cameron, had a mauling from Wellington side Poneke-Kilbirnie at the annual Vic Guth series at Norana Park yesterday while host team United is the only unbeaten team on three wins. Cameron, with both hands injured and his pitching hand needing an operation, may miss the nationals and, on the form shown in the 8-1 PK win, the side will not achieve its ambition to win back to back national titles. Wellington team PK has travelled to Auckland for more tournaments than any other side, and won many more than its share, but yesterday's thumping of Ramblers was one of the sweetest wins. PK, not the top side in the Wellington area at this stage, conceded a run in the first inning when the stalwart Scott O'Neale hit and had to wait until the fourth when four runs came home on five consecutive hits off Bobbie King. For Dave Metekingi it was a great show, with a hit in the four-run procession which saw Craig Wallace, Metekingi, Wayne Walker and Brett Tibbits scored. He then ended another four-run rally in the fifth with a booming home run off Bobbie King's pitching. Steve McFarlane, John Stratford and Bobby Makris also scored in the second four run burst. The Metekingi homer enforced the mercy rule for a seven run margin, a real embarrassment for Ramblers. Dawie Sutton and the injured Cameron umpired. Ramblers had beaten Metro 3-2 and Otahuhu 8-1 previously and was coasting. The win against Metro came only after two tiebreakers after another classic O'Neale start for a Ramblers' run. But Dion Nukunuku, the holder of three world championship golds, was the man for the situation with a sixth inning home run to equalise. Garth Pollard scored Metro's tiebreaker run, aided by Josh Cooke, but Jason Halloran came home for the Ramblers' winner on stolen base and the error it forced. Jeff Weber and Graeme Gollan umpired with Harry Wooding the scorer. Ramblers had few problems with Otahuhu, finally winning 8-1. The remarkable O'Neale made it his third lead-off run in the first inning in three games on the day, slammed home by Aaron Thompson's home run and Lance Roberts hit another to score Halloran in the second. In the third, with one down, Lyndon Andrew hit a home run with O'Neale and Lawrence Naera both hitting over the fence in the fourth for a mercy run win. Northcote had home runs to Casey Eden and Todd Wilson, with a runner on base, to snatch an early 3-0 lead against Waitakere Bears going on to win 6-2 with Dean Wallace in fine batting form. It was fine attacking batting and Aaron Collier and Wallace combined in the second to keep the pressure on. Antony Stuart was walked and scored for Bears after a Rueben Topia hit in the third but that was the end of the Bears' hits. Wallace scored in the lat turn, along with Michael Boaler with David Down, batting two for two, also in form. United, unbeaten and jubilant, welcomed Brendon Rogers back after shoulder surgery and he scored after a hit and some pressure play for the late lead against Otahuhu in a 2-0 win. Ben Enoka scored the second on an error and a Michael Wilson hit. Once again Otahuhu pitcher Taiki Apu showed fine skill in confining United to two hits, but Thomas Mach did the same for the host club. Hawkes Bay side Tamatea started the match against Glenora with a Luke Herrick home run and the hits continued with Glenora's Nathan Thorpe hitting over but with three more big home run shots from Tamatea's Kyle van Abel, Rakai Hokianga and Shaun Marino for an 8-2 win. In the second, Herrick was walked and came home on a bunt by Hokianga and a hit from Jerol Lajpold while a Corrin Tauri triple scored Glenora's Stefan Van Lei Shout. Bob Mitchell and Walter Nukunuku umpired with Rowena McKenzie scoring the game. But Tamatea could not keep it up against United after United scored three in the second turn, from Alfons Ovenikovas, Isaac Fletcher and Adrian Peihopa . Herrick tried hard with another home run and Lajpold and Stacy Taylor combined for another in the last turn but it was not enough with United winning 3-2. Lynette Leathart scored the match with club man Hadyn Wildbore umpiring until there was a ruckus and he was replaced by the Tamatea coach. Most of the umpires are said to be at the Ray Joseph Memorial series in Hamilton. Auckland Marist, not having a great season, had another day to forget with no wins from two matches, minus their Samoa international pitcher Heinie Shannon who is in Melbourne. But the loss to PK was close with PK coming with two runs in the last two turns to sneak the win. Jonathan Munden started the Marist scoring in the first with a hit, followed by a stolen base and two sacrifice shots but Bobby
