[Aus-soaring] Club and Sports Class Nationals
Hi All, The weather is starting to warm up at Benalla and it has been quite dry in the last month or so. With any luck we will have a much more normal start to the season. At this stage we have 46 entries, and still 6 weeks till earlybird entries close at the end of October. We can take up to 70, so there is still plenty of room for entries. There is a good rollup in the traditional Club and Sports classes, but we don't have enough yet in the 2 seater class. If you know anyone with an eligible two seater please encourage them - it would be nice to see a good contest in this class. Duo's, DG 1000, DG500, Janus, are all possibles. The class is handicapped and water ballast is allowed. You can find the website at http://www.deltaone.id.au/Benalla2012. Entry is through the online form on the site. If you have any questions, please contact me off list. -- Cheers /Tim/ /tra dire e fare c'è mezzo il mare/ ___ Aus-soaring mailing list Aus-soaring@lists.internode.on.net To check or change subscription details, visit: http://lists.internode.on.net/mailman/listinfo/aus-soaring

Re: [Aus-soaring] Glider visibility-UK-BGA
LED lighting technology has come a long way in the past few years and is still rapidly improving. Looking at the specifications on website http://www.aeroleds.com/ the average current draw at about 1 Ampere per light is still rather large for a glider. I suspect the efficiency will continue to improve to the point where they will be a viable option, perhaps glider manufacturers would then include them in their design. BTW some of the cyclists LED lights are extremely bright especially when flashing but full daylight is hard to compete with! John, Your last 7 words sum the situation up nicely but possibly some genius may be able to turn this to advantage. As I recall the original research (and of course as we know from our own experience), the only useful positive finding was that the reflected flash of sunlight off a highly polished wing was visible for miles Unfortunately this situation really only occurred when a glider was circling. So it is not so much a matter of Mandrake and smoke and mirrors, but more about mirrors! As John McFarlane rightly notes, everything else (at the time), was basically useless for an aircraft that could be any colour you like, as long as that colour was white! It is nice to see the CAA giving it a go. Does anybody know what the allocated budget for the program is? In the meantime we are left with lookout, lookout, lookout, and to a lesser (but invaluable) extent Flarm. Hey Bernard I don't use them all the time because they only stand out while cruising under a cloudstreet or in slightly overcast conditions. In bright daylight they are less effective but I still turn them on while flying in areas of high traffic density. Isn’t that a bit selective... bit like putting seat belts on in heavy traffic ! A different line of thought, that would up the fun quotient considerably, would be a modern version of the RP-63 'Pinball' (google it). Connect up a little box simialr to flarm that works out line of fire in two aircraft and then go dog fighting. The strobes go off signifying hits. (The RP-63 was a development of the Bell P-63 King Cobra in WW2 and was used to train bomber gunners. It had a strobe light in the nose in lieu of the cannon. The strobe would light up signifying hits from the gunners.) On Wed 21/09/11 9:18 AM , Mark Newton new...@atdot.dotat.org sent: LED strobes are increasingly common in the amateur-built arena. In bright daylight they are less effective but I still turn them on while flying in areas of high traffic density. The very latest generation of LED strobes are by far more powerful and a lot more effective. They will momentarily blind you if you look directly into them - just as conventional strobes do. The relatively narrow beam remains a problem but this can be overcome by embedding several rows of LED lights into the leading edge of the fin. This option is now available on the latest breed of Schleicher ships. The beauty is that there are no aerodynamic penalties at all.
