RE: AKC's Pet Healthcare Plan
this plan is administered by petshealthcare. petshealthcare has three levels not two. the middle level of petshealthcare gives you more for less money. the akc plan is skeletal in it's basic plan, the highest plan is similar to the akc plus plan. the middle one is the real bargain since it provides for much more than the basic akc plan. hope i have not confused everyone. both plans offer 100.00 deductible for the year. this is another plus. most other plans out there offer a 50.00 per incident deductible. both the akc and petshealthcare pay 80% of the remainder of the bill, if the costs re within reasonable and customarily fees. this is not always the case with a neuter where blood work is performed or special care is taken. your vet bill may be bigger than what they think it should be in which case they pay 80% of the reasonable and customary fee, not your vet bill. we have been happy with petshealthcare. andrea -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Pat Long Paul Dangel Sent: Thursday, June 19, 2003 6:03 PM To: 'Bernese Mountain Dog Mailing List' Subject: AKC's Pet Healthcare Plan While we're mentioning insurance plans, I thought this was worth a look. http://www.petpartnersinc.com/ They have a list of frequently asked questions, and the basics are: Premier Plan, helps pay the cost of -an annual physical exam, -veterinary exams due to illness or injury, -veterinary procedures and surgery, -prescriptions, -diagnostic procedures and laboratory tests, -X-rays, -hospitalization, -and other treatments as indicated in the plan terms and conditions. Cost starts at $24/month. Premier Plus Plan, helps pay the cost of everything covered in the Premier Plan, PLUS -vaccinations, -boosters, -heartworm testing and prevention medication, -flea treatments, -an annual dental cleaning, and other preventive measures as indicated in the plan terms and conditions. Cost starts at $41.50/month. Coverage for all of the US, US territories, and Canada. The deductible is $100 total for the plan period. This means that the most you will pay in deductibles is $100 regardless of how many times your pet is treated during the plan period. Your co-payment is 20% of each covered claim up to the plan limit. Dogs do not have to be AKC registered in order to be covered. Dogs under the age of 9 are eligible to be covered. Pre-existing conditions are not covered. - I had heard somewhere that genetic conditions would not be covered, but the only thing I've seen about it specifically is in the August 2003 Dog World issue, in which they state: ... all breeds are eligible for full coverage, with no higher fees for specific breeds, and no breed-specific hereditary conditions are excluded. When a dog is registered with the AKC, they will receive a free 60-day policy. According to the AKC the first 30 days covers injury, and the next 30 days covers both injury and illness, including diagnostic procedures and laboratory tests. I've always preferred not to carry insurance on my dogs, since I'm good at saving and having money set aside for emergencies. If I use enough vet services to have it pay for itself, then someone else is paying more money than they needed to so that there is enough there for me. And if I pay more for the insurance money than I get back in covered vet expenses, well, then I'm paying more than I need to and someone else is getting that money. It's a way of leveling risk for everyone, but the insurance company makes money. So we're paying a premium to let someone else save for us. I could never justify it for veterinary expenses. For human health care - that's a whole other matter! Pat Long ( Luther) Berwyn PA

However, one of my concerns however lies in the fact that the pet food industry wants to accommodate the consumer and some times it gets rather trendy. In reviewing research about large breed formulas I have found that most of the research was conducted by the manufacturers of dog food and pet food industry. As we all know with large breed dogs there is inherited risk, environmental stress, and nutrition affecting the well being and development of the dog. I have seen some Berner pups that were kept so lean that they looked emaciated. ( I am not talking about the typical lanky and awkward stage in pups that are not mature dogs) So - I am continuing to research this but I believe that excess weight on a dog may be more of a culprit than what the exact ratio of protein in foods. Owners still have to control portions and if Berner pups are not supposed to have heavy exercise than it makes sense that the amount they are fed needs to be considered. I can share some of my resources with you and possibly you can share some of yours with me. I may not have looked at some of the independent research that you may be aware of. I am still learning and do read a lot from a variety of sources. I do not believe that many vets are well versed in nutrition - maybe vet schools are changing this. I think medical doctors were accused of the same thing at one point? But thank you! I always appreciate your information and it often helps me switch gears in my thinking. don't forget the resources we have at www.berner.org http://www.berner.org/compilations/pdf_links.htm -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, March 02, 2003 7:41 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Cost of a Berner Kenny Thanks for opening up this valuable conversation with your question about the cost of keeping a Berner - healthy or not. It's the kind of issue that once you has fallen in love with a dog (or person, horse or car)most of us don't necessarily care to examine. I would encourage any prospective puppy owner to visit the Drs. Foster Smith website read Cost of A Dog. http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2cat=1671articleid=1543 It's an enlightening article -there are far more expenses than you would think. Once owned/loved by a Berner it feels like having a child and the thought of not doing everything I could is painful to contemplate. That's the kicker: to avoid finding yourself in the position where you have to make a difficult choice to treat or not treat a dog with an illness based on finances rather than the diagnosis, prognosis and efficacy of a specific treatment. The cost of veterinary care in the northeast many urban areas is more than in other parts of the country. I try to keep about $2500.-3000. available for emergencies. For some dogs I have used that fund - for others it was never touched. This is the way I avoid making veterinary decisions on a financial basis. I have also chosen NOT to treat dogs with life threatening illnesses because of their age (over 8) and the quality of life they would enjoy and euthanize them instead. Joy is a big issue for me: as companion dogs I feel they are here only because of our pleasure/stewardship and my dogs must have sufficient joy or chance of joy in the near future. Each owner must make this very personal decision it involves not only the family finances but ethical values, religious beliefs, education about a particular illness (Thank you Pat Long and the berner-l community) and informed, sensitive veterinary care.. Pet insurance is new and there are owners who are pleased and others who are disappointed with what they purchased:another individual choice where there is not much rock solid data. There are no right or wrong choices - only ones that are made without sufficient forethought planning. Read, read and read some more because once that gorgeous ball of affection and fluff walks in your home you'll not have lots of time to educate yourself! how could a dog like this end up roaming around and then in a shelter. wonder who the breeder is. i would think they would want to know about him. i actually might have a home for him. andrea -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Nobles.Carrie Sent: Monday, February 10, 2003 2:03 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Berner in Shelter Petfinder PetNotes.url http://www.petfinder.org/pet.cgi?action=2pet=1412164adTarget=468doggeneral SessionID=3e47f5571e819de1-app1display=preview=0row=25 This is a link to Animal Alliance of Belle Meade, NJ which is currently caring for Teddy, an 8-mo-old male Berner. anyone have an old laptop kicking around that karen could borrow. i am certain i am not the only one that thinks she should still have the luxury of the internet at home and selfishly want to hear about stevie. andrea, woofit and chi shavertown, pa http://www.brin.org/Woofit_and_Chi/

RE: Random thoughts, Stevie and BEHAF
actually we have gotten a good response from a few companies. dogon wrote me back asking for all the info. once we succeed with this i would like to create a lending library for apparatus so to speak for berners in need. there has to be a way to make hugo more comfortable. andrea
RE: Random thoughts, Stevie and BEHAF
maybe behalf could help out by helping to find hugo a set of wheels he could practice with. it would truly be wonderful if we could be a resource to dogs like hugo as well. it is truly a wonderful thing that behalf exists as part of this wonderful community. andrea, woofit and chi shavertown, pa http://www.brin.org/Woofit_and_Chi/ -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, January 31, 2003 6:52 AM To: Bernese Mountain Dog Mailing List Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 'John Stuive'; 'Gwyndean Candelaria' Subject: Random thoughts, Stevie and BEHAF Can you all tell I've had a bit of insomnia tonight? Been up since 2:15 EST. I just wanted to comment on the recent events re:Stevie and Karen. First I love Stevie Nicks so you already had me right there. But, Karen I have been following all your posts on Stevie. I am so happy he is making such progress. But the recent post about BEHAF and Stevie possibly being a Special Friend just blew me away. First I was so happy that people had suggested that Stevie be made a SF of BEHAF. That's exactly why the SF catagory was started. But to then hear that someone offered to pay all your medical bills, Karenwell I was just floored. Seriously I lost it. To that most generous person, there is a special place in Berner Heaven waiting for you. Now I promise I will try not to send 3 e-mails on the same day again, Pat. Much love to Karen, Stevie and the wonderful benefactor. And please remember BEHAF, and the Special Friends catagory. It is in existence for those not so fortunate as Karenthey either don't qualify or are reluctant to accept funding.but have captured the sympathies of the berner community, that is what the SF's category is for. All funds go directly to the designated SF [any amount over the needed funds go into the BEHAF general fund] . Much love to that special person who took care of Stevies medical bills. And all my best too Karen and Stevie. Cathi with Bacchus and Ari visit BEHAF www.BEHAF.com see memorials, favorite dog poems and send digital berner postcards!

we do dog biscuits with yogurt between them and then freeze. sort of like a dog ice cream sandwich. it is fun to do with the slightly larger shape treats like the postman, cats, etc. andrea, woofit and chi shavertown, pa http://www.brin.org/Woofit_and_Chi/ -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Jim Mary Morgan Sent: Tuesday, January 21, 2003 11:42 AM To: heather moye; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Happy Birthday! -Original Message- From: Andrea Brin [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, January 15, 2003 8:07 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: eating poop i strongly believe that there is a digestive imbalance problem when dogs do this! adding a good complete digestive enzymes is suggested in the medical literature and usually works. andrea, woofit and chi shavertown, pa http://www.brin.org/Woofit_and_Chi/ -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Patricia McIlveen Sent: Tuesday, January 14, 2003 9:30 PM To: 'berner-l' Subject: RE: eating poop All, I have two poop-eating dogs. Reba does it 'naturally', so to speak. Always has, always will. Unfortunately, I think Gus learned it from her. He didn't used to, but now does. It does not bother them; they have never been ill from it. It bothers both me and my husband tremendously. Because it bothers us, I have done a *huge* amount of reading. My conclusion after research is that it is not a behaviour that can be changed (much) but only managed. I am unwilling to change their body chemistry by feeding them something to make the poop they produce unattractive. They'll only find other poopsicles to eat on off-leash romps (and I don't like that many other people don't pick up after their dogs!!! Thank you so much, lazy people!) and I am not willing to deny them their off-leash exercise. So I pick up every deposit they make *immediately.* I have taught them both leave it! and that works sometimes, and others not. The primary management technique at our house is to refuse kisses, to use leave it, and to try to just get over our humancentric disgust (unsuccessfully). So very sorry, Patricia McIlveen (Yeoman, Reba Gus) Calgary, AB Canada

sandicast

exuberant behavior
has any one experience behavior that is so exuberant upon greeting you that it is out of control. our 10.5 month old goes nuts when she sees us. she cries, jumps, hugs and even traps your leg so you can't move. this is getting worse. i know she wants her own individual attention away from our 17 month old berner. i also know that she is so emotionally needy when this behavior occurs, that she works herself up to almost hysterical. turning away. telling her to sit, etc has not proved successful. if i go to the other dog first she gets his attention and then they both fight for mine. any ideas? andrea, woofit and chi shavertown, pa http://www.brin.org/Woofit_and_Chi/

it should be, but it is so closely related to soy that i would not use it. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Carob has no chocolate in it, and also has no theobromine, so I suppose it would be safe for dogs. Does anyone know for sure?
