[cayugabirds-l] FLLT Spring Bird Quest -- guided walks over Memorial Day weekend
Just a reminder - the Finger Lakes Land Trust Spring Bird Quest (FLLT SBQ) will take place over Memorial Day weekend. [cayugabirds-l] Recent sightings
Yesterday I saw an ACADIAN FLYCATCHER at Ford Hill in Lansing, where they have been for several years now. I already reported the Least and Semipalmated sandpipers on Myers Point, but I also saw a late male AMERICAN WIGEON in Fall Creek, three PURPLE MARTINS (including a female carrying nesting material from Myers across to the west side of the lake where they nest), and an adult Bald Eagle that caught a large fish in the mouth of Fall Creek and also headed west across the lake with it, pursued by Ring-billed Gulls. Last night I spent some time with Matt Medler and some other friends at Stewart Park. At 8:45 or so I spotted at least two COMMON NIGHTHAWKS moving quite distantly along the ridge on the west side of the lake. This morning, Andrew VanNorstrand and I had a singing WORM-EATING WARBLER above the Lindsay-Parsons Biodiversity Preserve and a singing ACADIAN FLYCATCHER in the forest south of Station Road in West Danby. As I mentioned a few days ago, ALDER and WILLOW FLYCATCHERS seem to me tobe in better numbers this year than they have been lately. I have heard one or both species in 10+ locations already this year, including Dryden Lake, several places in the Ithaca Airport area, Fidlers Pond, King Road, Downtown Dryden, Myers Point, Hawthorn Orchard, Sapsucker Woods, Hile School Road, and Ford Hill. [cayugabirds-l] Turkey Vulture List
Hi Folks, A friend of mine not on this list asked me to report that he is monitoring an active Turkey Vulture nest with two eggs. It is in a medium-sized gorge on the west side of Cayuga Lake, and the eggs are basically laid right on the ground, maybe with a few extra dried leaves under them. [cayugabirds-l] SSW at 1:00 pm today
Had a few minutes on the Wilson Trail after lunch - best bird was a Wilson Warbler working the shrubs just north of the foot bridge on the branch of the Wilson Trail that is closer to the wetlands - very cooperative and visible bird. Also, with others, saw a YB Sapsucker completely flattened out, wings spread head forward with mouth open, lying on the board walk to the Owens Observation Platform. He flew away after awhile and started drilling on a tree, so apparently he was sunbathing. The feathers on his head seemed damp, so maybe he had bathed and was drying himself in the sun? The sweetest sighting was a tiny faun, lying no more than 8' from the Wilson Trail. I had stopped for a Canada Goose family to cross the trail and the faun suddenly stood up on his (very long spindly) legs, teetered there for a moment, and then curled up and went (back to?) sleep. Had he not stood up, I never would have seen him - he was well-camouflaged and incredibly small, his body no bigger than a house cat's although his legs were longer - and the cute factor was off the chart. [cayugabirds-l] Black-billed Cuckoo
Awakened about 5 am by the insistent rapid cu-cu' ing of first of year at my yard BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, four mi north of Sapsucker Woods. Finally! Been wondering where the 'rain crows' were during all the rain. Also a BLACKPOLL WARBLER is still hiding in the neighbor's tall pine tree where I can't spot it, but singing loud and often. I got some decent pics of the female on Saturday in my woods but haven't seen the male there (saw several at SSW last week). Tried to track down what sounded like a begging nestling crow last evening, then heard the same moaning again this AM at 645. Not sure where it is but not easily accessible: appears to be across the creek and possibly Asbury Rd, maybe in the cemetery trees at Asbury/Triphammer intersection. It's almost male cat-like (not a Sapsucker: I have them and know their cat-like whine, and definitely not a Catbird: I have them too!). Coming consistently from the same place which appears to be at some height off the ground but in thick foliage I can't see through. What's odd is that I don't see the Crow family hanging around this year. Any other ideas of what would moan sort of like a cat (maybe the cat is stuck up a tree)? __ Chris Pelkie Research Analyst Bioacoustics Research Program Cornell Lab of Ornithology 159 Sapsucker Woods Road Ithaca, NY 14850 -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
Re: [cayugabirds-l] PUrple Martin over Ithaca
This last Sunday Ann and I saw a Purple Martin at Myers spit also maybe the same two Dunlin. Gary On May 24, 2011, at 10:08 PM, Meena Haribal wrote: Day before yesterday, there were two Dunlins feeding at close range from people at Myers spit. I also saw a Purple Martin over water along with Barn and Tree swallows. Later in the evening, a female Merganser with brood of 16 spotted balls came in from the creek, all the chicks were riding on her. I think she thought it was easier to get them all together on the lake rather than making them come on their own. When she dove to look for fish all but two were under the water. The remaining two lazily swam around till she surfaced again. She was rather fast. That made the day for me. On Saturday or may be it was Friday, I got chance to video and photograph a Wood Thrush on Wilson Trail. At one point he was looking at me and swinging. When he did churrr sound, his mouth was so wide open, I almost thought he can gulp me up without any problems. He is dashed cute. Unfortunately my camera mic clipped the sound as he was very close and loud. He was 10 to 15 feet most of the time. I barely managed to keep him full in the frame. I will post the video and photographs when my computer is cured of viruses. [cayugabirds-l] Nighthawks, Pewee
This evening I drove around behind the Ithaca airport in hopes of seeing COMMON NIGHTHAWK -- between 8:50 and 9 PM I observed at least 3 calling and feeding birds over the ponds on Neimi Road. Success! Back at home today, a singing EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, and still 1 singing BLACKPOLL WARBLER, along with a female BLACKPOLL moving with a family of chickadees, and probably the same female AMERICAN REDSTART as yesterday.
