This morning my neighborhood Broad-winged Hawks are out soaring above the
forested ravines and calling. I imagine this is encouragement for the fledged
youngsters to come up and see the lay of the land. I didn't locate this year's
nest. Had a few sights of adults hunting from perches well down

pweee at 6:30 this morning, I had three reasons for thinking That must be
another imitative Blue Jay. But moments later the yard crows drove a
Broad-winged Hawk from its perch in a tree by the pond. Kids! They'll go

Since machines have to be driven all over these lawn areas on a regular basis
to keep the grass short, it would probably be acceptable for the goose
droppings to get picked up the same way. And sure enough, there are now
machines designed for this very purpose.

This evening Pat and I were delivering groceries to her 95 year old mother,

like to remind anyone who cares (and inform anyone who might not know) that the
so-called swan pen is actually the Louis Agassiz Fuertes Memorial Bird
Sanctuary. Nowadays we tend to reserve the words Bird Sanctuary
Road. Not an unusual bird in the Danby State Forest,
but memorable because the sky was so gray that the hawk seemed to be in flames,
the brightest thing anywhere to be seen.

Over the roar of Beech Hill Brook (just west of the eponymous road,
Lindsay-Parsons Preserve, West Danby) I heard one or more Hermit Thrushes early
this morning, and also a Winter Wren. Fox Sparrows are singing here and there,
Ruffed Grouse are drumming. Wood Ducks have circled my pond, but
New in my 'yard' this morning were more singing Fox Sparrows, a lone Chipping
Sparrow, several Golden-crowned Kinglets, and one or two singing Purple
Finches.
Turkeys are gobbling, Ruffed Grouse are drumming, and I'll be on the watch for
returning Hermit Thrushes.

I took a short walk in the mown fields in the central part of the LP
Biodiversity Preserve (West Danby). Ponds are just beginning to open down
there, and Wood Ducks were concentrated in the small ice-free areas. I stopped

I happened to be on foot in Ithaca's Fall Creek neighborhood about 1:45
yesterday afternoon, so I looked in on the Merlin nest along Cascadilla Creek,
and watched for a few minutes. It was pretty quiet, but I did see one falcon
