[cayugabirds-l] Question

2023-07-15 Thread Carol Keeler
I just saw something unusual from one of my House Sparrows and wondered if
someone could give me some insight on it. The female sparrow came and broke
off a big piece of catmint and stuffed it in her nesting box. Why would she do
that? Would it deter bugs? I’ve never seen that behavior before.

[cayugabirds-l] New yard bird

2023-04-02 Thread Carol Keeler
Imagine my surprise last night when I spotted a male Ring Neck Pheasant near
the feeders. It’s a new yard bird for me. I got a few pics before he left. I
never expected to see him again. Imagine my surprise this morning when I found
him sitting on a teak table on my front porch! I was unsuccessful get any more
pictures. When I last saw him, he was running for cover under the spruce trees
out front. Who knows. Maybe he’ll stick around and I’ll get to see him again.
Nice way to start the day. Well, he’s back under the south feeder scarfing up
seed. I thought I heard him call. And now he’s parading around my garden.
Fun, fun

As an aside, when I was a kid we lived in a newly developed part of Westvale,
near Syracuse. We were only the third house there so it was pretty wild.
There were lots of pheasants back then. My dad and a neighbor used to go
upstairs and shoot pheasants from there. No houses in that directions. Over
the years I rarely saw a pheasant

[cayugabirds-l] FOS

2023-03-21 Thread Carol Keeler
I’ve just had my FOS male Purple Finch arrive. I’ve had about 4 Song Sparrows
for a week. Luckily the number of blackbirds has diminished. Just a few bossy
grackles at a time. I had a Carolina Wren a few times this winter and a
Mockingbird but haven’t seen either in quite a while.
I have a starling pulling out the nesting materials in a House Sparrow nest
chalet. Oh, I finally have heard a bluebird. They often nest here. That’s my
spring report.

[cayugabirds-l] Migrants

2022-10-02 Thread Carol Keeler
I’ve had a few new migrants. Today there was a White Crown Sparrow.
Interesting since I usually get White Throats first. I had a Dark Eyed Junco a
couple of days ago. I do not have them all year like some around here do. My
favorite was the Red Breasted Nuthatch who stayed several days eating the
peanuts. The White Crown was the biggest surprise. I’ve also had more Blue
Jays than normal, up to 10. I think they’re migrants too. I’ve had a few
warblers but I’m not good at IDing them. The one I was sure of was a beautiful
Magnolia warbler. There may have been a Canada and. Black Throated Green.
I’ve got photos of both.

[cayugabirds-l] New Migrants

2022-05-03 Thread Carol Keeler
The catbird came a few days ago. The Purple Finch pair came several weeks ago.
Yesterday I had a female Towhee and the female Rose Breasted Grosbeak. This
morning I had two male Orioles at the same time and also spotted the male
Grosbeak. Later on I spotted a mature White Crown Sparrow. It’s been a great
day so far. I’m near . Auburn.
There was an Osprey nest on a tower near my house on rt 20. I’m sad to say
the nest was removed and the Ospreys have not tried to rebuild it. I’ll miss
them. They were often circling over my house calling.

[cayugabirds-l] Merlin song

2021-07-10 Thread Carol Keeler
I tried Merlin song outside this morning after I figured out what I had done
last night. When you wear Bluetooth hearing aids, you have to turn off the
Bluetooth. It was amazing! I recorded from my deck and all these bird names
popped up. I could hear the Robin and house wren, but it also heard the
Chipping Sparrow, and House Sparrow which I couldn’t hear. No hearing aids on.
Sometimes I get a bird singing that I don’t recognize. This is going to be
wonderful for IDing those birds. I used to use Bird Sleuth, but it was never
accurate. My girlfriend lives in the woods so she has some different birds
than I do. I’m going there today and can’t wait to use Merlin. We downloaded
Merlin on her phone yesterday. My great niece will be there too and I’ve been
getting her involved in birding. I’m going to put Merlin on her Mom’s phone so
they can use it too. My niece doesn’t recognize any bird songs so this will
help her with her six year old. I’m going to try and get the whole family more
involved in birding. I’m so excited about having an app that works and will
help me learn .

[cayugabirds-l] Hummer

2021-05-05 Thread Carol Keeler
Well, all my expected migrants showed up this week. A hummingbird showed up
this morning. It was eating from flowers on a weed in my patio. I’ve often
believed that they will go to a natural food source before the feeder. I’ve
had my feeders out for a week now and again I saw it on a flower rather than
the feeder. I bought a lot of flowers yesterday and they are accessible though
protected on the front porch. I won’t plant for weeks.

Last week the Oriole, Rose Breasted Grosbeak, and Catbird arrived. The week
before that the Purple Finches arrived. I still have some White Throated
Sparrows and a few White Crown Sparrows. I’ve also had a one day stop over of
male and female Towhees. Last week the House Wren showed up.He’s singing
daily. My pair of Tree Swallows is back and nesting. I had a single Barn
Swallow fly over when I was mowing. No warblers yet. I usually have yellow
and Common Yellowthroats out back. I always get a Warbling Vireo too which I
haven’t heard yet. Ah spring.

[cayugabirds-l] Unexpected Yard Bird

2021-04-04 Thread Carol Keeler
I just had a mature Bald Eagle fly over! It came from the west, turned and flew

my second one this season. The Grackles and Red Wings have been here for many

Yes, I’ve found that too. Niger seed gets old. I read somewhere that it’s good

[cayugabirds-l] New bird

2020-10-31 Thread Carol Keeler
I wrote too soon. I’ve got 2 Fox Sparrows. Then an American Tree Sparrow
showed up, FOS. After that a large group of Juncos showed up, but I’ve been
getting them. The Red Bellied Woodpeckers have shown up. I’ve rarely had them
for the past year so I’m delighted to see them regularly again. Still hoping
for Grosbeaks.

[cayugabirds-l] Yard birds

I got a rarity to my yard this morning- a fox sparrow! I’m still getting one
White Throat. I have been getting a few Pine Siskins. No Evening Grosbeaks
yet. I’m lucky to get any birds here with the roofers here many days. They
finished yesterday so maybe those Grosbeaks will finally show up. I’m pleased

[cayugabirds-l] Interesting Cardinal Behavior

[cayugabirds-l] 2 new migrants in Auburn

2020-05-02 Thread Carol Keeler
Early this morning a male RB Grosbeak showed up. Right now I had a beautiful
White Crown Sparrow show up. The Oriole has been quietly hanging out in the
serviceberry . He went to the nearby seed feeder. I couldn’t tell if he tried
to eat anything. There is grape jelly, suet, and oranges for him.

I went to Montezuma this morning. It was upsetting to have so many bicyclists
there. I spoke to one group and he said it was permitted. I said not in
nesting season. One woman was not only out of her truck, but walked down into
the area after La Rues lagoon. I only saw two new birds, gallinules and a lone
egret. There were quite a few geese with their babies. There were lots of
turtles basking in the sun. I only spotted one duck, a flying mallard. There
were quite a few ducks ways out in the visitor center pool and I spotted one
greater Yellowlegs.

[cayugabirds-l] FOY

2020-05-01 Thread Carol Keeler
I had my sunroom window open so I could photograph the birds. Who should show
up but my FOY male Oriole. He was very cooperative and I got some great shots.
He came within ten feet of me on the rock wall. He’s never done that before.
He went to the grape. He rummaged around in the flower garden for quite a
while.

I have 10 goldfinches in my serviceberries which makes the bushes very colorful.

[cayugabirds-l] Birdy morning

2020-04-27 Thread Carol Keeler
Birds were everywhere this morning. I went from 4 to 10 White Throated
sparrows. There were the usuals too, Cardinals, lots of goldfinches, Song
Sparrows, Blue Jays, House Finches, a pair of Purple Finches and tons of the
cursed blackbirds. A couple days ago I had a Brown Thrasher which I rarely
have visit. I have tree swallows and Bluebirds checking out nest boxes. Still
waiting for my Catbirds and Orioles. The Titmice and Chickadees show up a bit
later in the day, Blue Jays too.
Right now I have hundreds of mostly Grackles in my back yard. Any way to get
rid of them? I don’t mind a few, but this is ridiculous.

[cayugabirds-l] Question

2020-04-19 Thread Carol Keeler
I was at Montezuma this morning. At the end near rt. 89 and above the Thruway
I spotted a raptor soaring low. When I got my bins on it I could tell it was
an eagle. As it banked in good light, it’s underside seemed golden rather than
the brown of a Bald Eagle. Any idea what I saw? I had a a very quick look.
By the time I got to 89, it was gone.

For me the the biggest find was a Yellow Bellied Sapsucker on Mays Pt. Rd.

[cayugabirds-l] Mockingbird

2019-12-06 Thread Carol Keeler
The mockingbird surprised me with a visit again. It was here eating
Winterberries. I’m glad I have 5 bushes covered with them. There could be an
interesting war over the berries this summer. I’ve had robins and bluebirds
fighting over them before. Many years ago I had a pair of mockers nesting in
my yard. They considered the crabapple tree theirs and drove off all other
birds. I have only a few crabapples left on the big tree but the new tree out
front is covered. I’d love the mocker to stay! I got pictures of it this time.

As for other birds, I do have several Tree Sparrows and lots of Juncos.
Otherwise it’s the regulars.

The other day I was invited to “teach” my niece’s daycare class about birds.
What fun. I brought lots of my bird photos to share. I’d love to inspire a
new generation of birders. I’m giving my 4 year old niece kids binoculars,
bird ID books, and feeders for Christmas. Here’s hoping. Get them while
they’re young.

[cayugabirds-l] Mockingbird

2019-11-12 Thread Carol Keeler
For me it was an exciting morning. I spotted a red fox out back so I headed to
the sunroom to see if I could watch him. He ended up hunting for rodents
around my feeder. While out there I looked to see what birds were there. It
was about 6:45. I get the most birds early. Anyway, a Mockingbird landed on a
metal decoration in the garden. Very exciting. I haven’t had a Mocker around
here in many years. They used to nest in my yard, but then we had a horrible
winter with extreme cold, and I never saw one here again. They used to defend
the crabapple tree against any bird that would go in the tree. I’m hoping it
may stay around. I have lots of winter fruits with crabapples and
winterberries.

seminars. This was a wonderful way for me to be further informed. Thanks
again.

[cayugabirds-l] bird ID help

2019-08-19 Thread Carol Keeler
Hi all,
I photographed this little gray bird at Montezuma last Wednesday morning. The
only little gray bird I know that has white on the edges of its tail is a
Junco. This isn't a Junco. It holds its tail like a Mockingbird. Again,
that's not what it is. From its beak I thought it might be a warbler. I'm
sorry the pic isn't better, but even at 600mm, it was tiny. Can any of you
bird experts help me?

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Salt Pt Baltimore and Orchard Orioles

2019-07-25 Thread Carol Keeler
There were Caspian Terns at the end of the wildlife drive on Tuesday. They
were rather distant.

My orioles are still here and coming for the jelly. The juveniles were finally
eating jelly on their own. I still have my Grosbeaks coming. I have a pair of
House Wrens nesting in a birdhouse on my shed. I love hearing him sing.

[cayugabirds-l] Turkey Vultures

2019-07-04 Thread Carol Keeler
When I drove into Auburn going to Wegmans this morning, there was a kettle of
25 or more TVs soaring . I’m three miles east of there and just had a group of
10 TVs go over. I’m used to seeing just a few at a time going over. What’s
with a huge group in the middle of the city. I bet there’s great thermals with
all this heat.

[cayugabirds-l] Orioles

2019-05-15 Thread Carol Keeler
It’s certainly been a year for Orioles. I have at least three males and two
females. The surprise today was having two Orchard Orioles show up. One is a
female. The male looks like a first summer male in Sibley. They like the
oranges and grape jelly so maybe they will stay around.

[cayugabirds-l] Last Bird

2019-05-05 Thread Carol Keeler
Well all my regulars have finally arrived here in Auburn. A male RTH
Hummingbird just showed up at the feeder. Yesterday I had a surprise visit of
a 10 member flock of Pine Siskins. I have both sexes of RB Grosbeaks. Got
pictures of the female Grosbeak and P Finch on both sides of the feeder. Now
I’ll be able to tell them apart. A Catbird and House Wren finally showed up
Friday. I have two pair of P Finches which I hope will stay. They were around
all winter. I have large numbers of WTH Sparrows and WC Sparrows.

I really appreciate having so many birds coming to my feeders since I’m stuck
at home after a hip operation. They are better entertainment than screens.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Update - another vote for shelter

2019-02-01 Thread Carol Keeler
The birds didn’t seem to be using the tree for shelter since they were on the
tops of the branches and not in the tree. Many do roost in my Norway spruces.
It will be interesting to see if they do the same thing tomorrow.

[cayugabirds-l] Question

2019-02-01 Thread Carol Keeler
I’m wondering why my birds have suddenly found an Alaskan Cedar so interesting.
I noticed several birds, Cardinals, Tree Sparrows, Chickadees all sitting at
the tips of a birch tree which is close to the Cedar. They’d fly over to the
Cedar and go in. More and more of my regular birds came and seemed to check
out the tree. At one time there was a Blue Jay, a couple of male Cardinals,
two Titmice, a Chickadee, Tree Sparrows, and House Sparrows all sitting in the
birch waiting to go in the Cedar. What’s going on? I know the Cedar has
little seed cones. I’ve never seen any birds in the Cedar before. It was
fascinating to watch. I usually see the birds in the Norway spruces which are
nearby, not the Cedar. There are no feeders on that side of the house. Any
ideas of what’s going on?

[cayugabirds-l] Evening Grosbeaks!

2018-12-04 Thread Carol Keeler
Finally I had a flock of male and female Evening Grosbeaks here in Auburn!
Unfortunately, a squirrel came and a Coopers Hawk, at the same time and scared
them off. I have no idea how long they had been here. Luckily my camera was
nearby and I did get a few pics. I hope they return. Cooper is still sitting
in the crabapple tree and watching the feeders.

[cayugabirds-l] New yard bird

2018-11-09 Thread Carol Keeler
I didn’t think my backyard birding could get any better today, but it did. I
had this single “grackle” hanging around. Eventually I realized it was too
small for a grackle. I thought, Rusty Blackbird? So I looked it up in Sibley
and yes, that’s what I have. It’s a new life list and yard bird for me. I got
pictures. Just as I finished the Cooper’s hawk flew in after the birds. I
don’t think it caught one. I’d been watching about 8 Pine Siskins who finally
found the nyger sock, 4 pairs of Cardinals, House Finches and Sparrows,
Mourning Doves, Titmice, 10 Juncos, and Chickadees. I hadn’t seen the Siskins
in several days. The chickadees are just coming back in after the Cooper
scare. I tried to get a pic of Cooper in the crabapple but he flew. Then a
deer went through the back yard. What a day! I hope the Rusty Blackbird
returns.

[cayugabirds-l] A Wow Bird

2018-11-09 Thread Carol Keeler
It was a magic morning watching my birds at the feeders. I had a White Crown
Sparrow and White Throated Sparrow which I hadn’t seen in quite a while. I
went out and through out more Sparrow food and came in to watch again. A large
bird the size of a mockingbird landed on the arbor. My camera was , for once
right in front of me, so I began taking lots of pictures. The bird wasn’t
interested in the feeder . It landed on the ground once. I have mice and
voles around the feeder. It seemed more interested in the birds. Most had
left. Well, when I got to examine the images closely I found out it was an
immature first winter Northern Shrike! I’ve never been that close to a Shrike
before. I’ve only seen adults. Talk about making my day! Now I just need
some Evening Grosbeaks and Redpolls. I live in a rural development. Our lots
are 2 acres or more and there is a farm across the road on route 20, so the
habitat does work for these birds. So exciting!

[cayugabirds-l] Migrants

2018-10-16 Thread Carol Keeler

Last Friday I had a Red Breasted Nuthatch for one day. It was unbelievably
tame and came within a foot of me. It’s only the second time I’ve had one
here. I haven’t seen it again, unfortunately.
I have four White Crowned Sparrows. One is an adult and the other three are
first year Birds. I had 3 adults a week ago.
This morning I had my first Junco of the season, a beautiful male.

[cayugabirds-l] Migrants

2018-10-01 Thread Carol Keeler
I’ve had two White Throated Sparrows the last three days. I’ve also had a few
Yellow Rump warblers coming for the bayberries. I had so many last year they
stripped the bushes clean. Not this year. My only other warblers were a
juvenile Yellow Throat which do nest in my yard, and a female Redstart. I have
about 10 Blue Jays mobbing the feeders. I had a pair all summer. Not sure if
the extras are off spring or migrants.

I now have 2 Fox Sparrows! They’ve been here for two days now. I had one about
five years ago which stayed for minutes. I don’t get great numbers of birds

I also just had a flock of Cedar Waxwings sitting in a tall maple. Now and
then they would hawk insects .

[cayugabirds-l] New birds

2018-04-19 Thread Carol Keeler
Well, the Chipping Sparrows finally made it to Auburn. I had two this morning.
I still have American Tree Sparrows and Juncos. For the second time ever I had
a Fox Sparrow. I’ve been watching for both birds. I’ve had quite a few Song
Sparrows for quite awhile. I also have three male Purple Finches, plus one
female that have become regulars at the feeders.
Yesterday, the Osprey from the cell phone tower down the street on rt. 20 flew
over. It’s back! I also nearly got run over by a Cooper’s Hawk chasing a
grackle. I was out filling the feeders. I don’t think the grackle got caught.
I could feel them zoom by.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club Trip Sunday

2018-01-15 Thread Carol Keeler
Tom Mc Donald in his talk at Montezuma had some suggestions as to why Snowy
Owls come to the same areas. Lights at airports seem to attract them. They
stop where there is water. In the winter they often hunt waterfowl. Cayuga
lake is right near the airport and gives them another source of food besides
rabbits and rodents.
Last year’s Gyrfalcon was also hunting waterfowl on the lake . I do wonder if
it’s the same bird returned.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Hummingbird!!!

2017-07-27 Thread Carol Keeler
I've had two pair of hummingbirds that I've seen regularly since they returned
in May. I have two feeders out on the deck plus plenty of flowers. Mine like
salvia and catmint. I've often wondered if the same ones return here because
they are used to my feeders. That goes for my Orioles and catbirds that come
to the jelly feeders. I had to lure the Orioles from the woods slowly bringing
the feeders closer to the house until they were on the deck. I only had to do
it one year. Do they remember, or is it by chance that the birds find it?

about. Is Castle Creek the creek coming into the lake on the east side? On
the map I see a tiny creek about in the middle, too.

[cayugabirds-l] Banner Day for Migrants

2017-04-30 Thread Carol Keeler
I had a great day for new arrivals today. Both the Catbird and House Wren
showed up. Also an Eastern Towhee showed up for the second time ever at my
house. The male Baltimore Oriole comes frequently for the shelled peanuts.
Has anyone else ever had them come for peanuts? They usually come for the
grape jelly. The Purple Finch showed up too. I haven't seen him in many
days.i have four White Crowned Sparrows too. I didn't get a chance to walk
around the property to look for other migrants like the Warbling Vireo that I
usually get. Great day for birds!

[cayugabirds-l] Red Breasted Nuthatch

2016-09-19 Thread Carol Keeler
Just had my first RB Nuthatch at my house near Auburn. I've never had one here
in the 17 years I've lived here. My friend down the lake in Skaneateles has
them yearly. I had them in Syracuse too. I hope it becomes a regular though
it probably was just passing through.

Few Hummingbirds coming now. I suspect the ones I am getting are migrants.

[cayugabirds-l] Red Headed Woodpecker Question

2016-08-05 Thread Carol Keeler
I have an image of this year's Red Headed Woodpecker. It's not great but you
can see what you need to for this question. Do they eat eggs of other birds?
Are those eggs or fecal sacs? I watched it up in a tree and then it dove into
some bushes. It came up on the dead tree with what you see in its mouth. I
think it robbed eggs from another bird's nest, but I'm not sure. I don't think
it was around its own nest hole to remove fecal sacs. It had been in a green
tree, not a dead one. Any ideas? It was the only time I was able to find the
bird this year.
