[cayugabirds-l] Pine Warbler

2021-04-25 Thread Suan Hsi Yong
Just had a surprise new yard bird: a pine warbler checking out my
small garden bed right outside my picture window not five feet away,
here in Commonland by Six-Mile Creek. The view out that window is
towards a grove of pines and spruces, from which trills are frequently
heard, but which I'd always assumed were just juncos. I may have to
invest some warbler-necking time to see if there might not be some
pine warblers nesting up there.

Suan

PS, the same garden bed was visited by a fox last week:

[cayugabirds-l] Pine Warbler

2017-05-31 Thread Jody Enck
Hardly news any more, but there is (still) a singing Pine Warbler singing
this morning from the big White Pines near the stone gates to Sapsucker
Woods along Sapsucker Woods Road. I heard it singing two different times
when crossing the road (between point counts) and saw it once. I know
several other people heard and or saw it this morning in the same place,
including three hot-shot Amish women birders from Penn Yan who I
encountered on the trail.

If it keeps singing like it did this morning, it will not be hard to find.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Pine Warbler

2017-05-21 Thread Suan Yong
Yesterday our SFO group had a pine warbler at Greensprings Cemetery (in
Newfield) singing from one of the scattered smallish pines (~20 feet tall) in
the mostly open fields. Great eye-level looks for this species, from a tree
that looked (to me) too small and isolated to be good habitat. And it was
fighting with a chipping sparrow for that territory, both in song and in being
chased. Of course it's unclear whether it'll breed there or is just passing
through, but it seemed to be at least considering that option.

(And of course, when I first heard its song, my expectation was junco.)

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Pine Warbler

2017-05-21 Thread Dave Nutter
On yesterday's walk around Sapsucker Woods with SFO, we heard the trill of what
turned out to be a Pine Warbler singing near the south end of the Woodleton
Boardwalk. I had expected Dark-eyed Junco because I had scoped one nearby on a
walk earlier this year, and two of the largest White Pines in the area were cut
down recently. There is one large mature White Pine near where we first heard
the bird, and where two of us finally saw it, but other pines are a bit
scattered, and therefore not what I would have guessed was good habitat. Maybe
this bird is a holdover from when there were more large pines closer together,
but certainly I'm a worse judge of Pine Warbler habitat than the bird is.
Regardless, I should have noticed the clue that the bird was moving frequently
between songs, which is typical of Pine Warbler, and which I have not noticed
among juncos.

[cayugabirds-l] Pine Warbler Comstock Knoll

2016-04-19 Thread Laura Stenzler
At least one Pine Warbler at Comstock Knoll in the Cornell Plantations today.
That is the hill behind the main building, the one with the huge white pines.
There have been breeding Pine Warblers in these trees for many years.

[cayugabirds-l] Pine Warbler

2015-04-13 Thread Geo Kloppel
Since I was out to deliver bows on Ithaca's South Hill this morning, I had the
opportunity to look for some other newly arrived Louisiana Waterthrushes. I
found none at Upper Buttermilk, none at Lick Brook, and none at the top of the
gorge of the West Branch of Cayuga Inlet. But in the pines along Townline Road
just north of Lick Brook I did find a singing Pine Warbler.

[cayugabirds-l] Pine Warbler at feeder

2014-04-28 Thread Rick Bonney

I keep forgetting to report that a Pine Warbler has been a regular at our
feeder in south Newfield for the past several days--it first showed up on
April 18. This is a first for us as a feeder bird in nearly 30 years in
this location.

[cayugabirds-l] Pine Warbler, Beebe Lake

2014-04-08 Thread Jay McGowan
A PINE WARBLER was singing along Forest Home Drive at the east end of Beebe
Lake this morning. David Weber reported it from earlier this morning.
Several BUFFLEHEAD and a pair of REDHEADS were on the lake. Phoebes and
juncos were singing, and a tailless SWAMP SPARROW popped up in response to
pishing. Stewart Park was quiet.

Also, Chris had a Louisiana Waterthrush at Monkey Run this morning.

[cayugabirds-l] Pine Warbler

2012-03-15 Thread Kevin J. McGowan
I just got a nice look at a very bright male PINE WARBLER singing in my yard on
Yellow Barn Road, west of Dryden. I heard it sing once yesterday morning but
wasn't willing to commit to the identification, not when juncos are doing all
kinds of unformed trills these days. I was pretty sure of the ID, and am happy
to have confirmed it with some good views this evening.

Also yesterday a WINTER WREN was singing in the valley and my landlord had an
EASTERN PHOEBE on his window today.

[cayugabirds-l] Pine Warbler photos

2012-03-15 Thread Kevin J. McGowan
I stuck a few photos of my Pine Warbler at
http://picasaweb.google.com/KevinJ.McGowan/Spring2012Birds.

On the downside, I had to close my screened door tonight because the mosquitoes
were too bad. Where is that wonderful 10 days of warm weather without bugs?
Not going to happen this year, I guess.
