[Chat] Mary Washington to speak at VLP tomorrow (12/02)
Hello, neighbors, Mary Washington, Delegate and Senator-Elect will be speaking tomorrow Sunday morning at the VLP at the meeting of the Baltimore Ethical Society. Sorry for the short notice, but I hope you can attend. What: “Legislative Agenda and Ethical Values in Annapolis” by Senator-Elect Mary Washington When: 10:30 am, tomorrow Sunday, Dec. 2nd Where: Village Learning Place, 2521 Saint Paul St. Meetup: http://meetu.ps/e/G5MZC/1jsJ2/f In the rough and tumble world of state politics, it can be difficult to keep your moral compass straight and true. The pressures of getting re-elected and needing to “cut deals” so as to move forward on issues of key concern, make it challenging to focus on ethics. Senator-Elect Mary Washington, Ph.D., has been a leader in fighting for affordable access to water, protecting families from unfair tax sales and foreclosures, helping unaccompanied homeless youth get services and support, marriage equality, protection of transgender Marylanders, elimination of the death penalty, implementation of the Maryland DREAM Act, and securing more funding for Baltimore’s public schools. She will share her legislative agenda for Maryland and how she applies her ethical values in Annapolis. Senator-Elect Mary Washington, Ph.D., is an advocate for Maryland’s 43rd District as a legislator, professor, ally, public policy leader and trail-blazer. Born in Philadelphia, Mary Washington came to Baltimore due to her scholarly interests and dedication to serving at-risk populations. She earned her Ph.D. and M.A. in Sociology from The Johns Hopkins University and became an assistant professor at Lehigh University. She is currently a member of the part-time faculty at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). In 2010, Mary made history becoming the first openly LGBT African-American elected official in Maryland – and only the second such state legislator in the country. Senator-Elect Washington has passed landmark legislation that bars the inhumane practice of shackling female prisoners during labor and delivery; sponsored and passed the nation’s first law protecting social media (Facebook) password privacy; secured stronger safeguards from electronic harassment via text or direct messaging; won new restrictions on price-gouging and abusive treatment of consumers by rent-to-own stores targeting low-income and minority communities; and passed the state’s first legislation establishing the community schools model as the statewide strategy for addressing concentrated poverty. Her work as Delegate has earned the trust of her colleagues and constituents on budget and tax issues, as well as, the impact of funding choices on Maryland’s families. ___ Chat mailing list Chat@charlesvillage.info http://charlesvillage.info/mailman/listinfo/chat_charlesvillage.info archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/chat@charlesvillage.info/

Steve, The City is working on fixing a leak at my end of the block. I spoke to the crew a few minutes ago and a worker said the water should be out for a few hours. [Chat] Congratulations to Beth Strommen!
Today, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake presented Ms. Beth A. Strommen with the Richard A. Lidinsky, Sr. Award of Excellence in Public Service at a ceremony in City Hall. Strommen has worked for the Planning Department for 22 years. Each year, we have an opportunity to celebrate the exemplary employees who have dedicated themselves to making their agency-and this city-a better place, said Mayor Rawlings-Blake. Beth Strommen is constantly seeking to improve and restore environmental conditions to make our urban communities greener and healthier places to live. The Richard A. Lidinsky, Sr. Award of Excellence in Public Service was established to recognize long-serving City employees who have worked to improve City services and make city government more efficient. The award is named after Mr. Lidinsky, who was employed with Baltimore City for 43 years and served as deputy comptroller under eight mayors. Every year, the Lidinsky Awards Committee selects an employee who exemplifies the same attributes as this remarkable public servant. Recipients receive $2,500 and have their name placed on a commemorative plaque in the City Hall rotunda. Two runners-up are each awarded $1000 prizes. Runners-up were Ms. Etta Crafton, a parking specialist with the Parking Authority of Baltimore City, and Mr. Clark Howells, watershed manager for the Department of Public Works. Previous award winners are Peggy Watson (2004), Michael Alexander (2005), Richard Kagan (2006), George Winfield (2007), Patricia Williams (2008), Clement Ruley (2009), Donna Owens (2010), and Donald Heinbuch (2011). [Chat] Discount on A Skull in Connemara at Center Stage
Hello, neighbors, Center Stage is performing A Skull in Connemara by Irish playwright Martin McDonagh. The website is http://centerstage.org/skull/ . The play is part of a trilogy, and the past two Sundays, Center Stage has done staged readings of the other two plays at Liam Flynn's Ale House. The readings were brilliant. The plays are black comedies, featuring gruesome murders (off-stage) and hilariously cynical portrayals of the Irish. If the staged readings are any indication (and I'm sure they are), this will be a lot of fun! For a limited time, there's 50% off A tickets sold through the website with the code 12SKULL50OFF. [Chat] Notes from Retrofit Baltimore meeting
Notes from Retrofit Baltimore meeting On Monday evening, Kathleen and I attended an information session offered by Retrofit Baltimore, which is a project of the nonprofit Civic Works. The staff are Americorps/VISTAs. Their website is http://retrofitbaltimore.org/ . Retrofit offers home energy audits, recommends ways to make your house more energy efficient, and can refer you to contractors to do the work. They emphasize whole house energy make overs rather than small-scale improvements like weather-stripping. Retrofit is affiliated with a Civic Works social enterprise called EnergyReady, which acts like the contracting arm of the organization. EnergyReady and Retrofit cooperate with Bmoregreen, which is a nonprofit that offers green job training to individuals who face barriers to employment (e.g., ex-cons). Amanda Giorgio from Retrofit gave a slide show presentation. Other Retrofit staff there were Evie, Jasmine, Kevin, and Jeremy. The energy audits from Retrofit sound comparable to those you can get from Terra Logos (http://www.terralogos.com/). They analyze your building envelope meaning the the rooms and the volume of air you want to protect or climate control. Their house doctor Paul brings a blower door to the front of your house, which forces air out to create negative pressure that exaggerates air leaks. Then using an infrared gauge, they look for leaks and the right way to seal them. For example, they look at making air barriers to prevent cold air from seeping in through the basement. Giorgio stressed that you don't want to seal so tightly that you lose healthy ventilation but that you need to seal enough so that you don't simply make the remaining leaks worse. Some ways to improve building energy usage include * spray foam to seal basement air leaks * cellulose insulation for attics (made from recycled newspaper) * cool roof coating made from white acrylic The energy audit costs $495. If you then do a certain basic amount of work on your home, you qualify for a $250 rebate from BGE on the audit. You can get a 21 percent rebate on a retrofit, with about 6 percent federal and 15 percent from the state. The federal rebate is currently approved only through the end of the year. Giorgio promoted their partnership with EnergyReady. Retrofit, EnergyReady, and Bmoregreen have a warehouse on Frankfurt Ave. in West Baltimore where they offer hands-on training in doing retrofits in a lab that simulates a house. Bmoregreen training lasts 3 months. Their goals are to ensure high training standards and to create local job opportunities by steering business to local companies that offer living wages and high training standards. EnergyReady offers better than a living wage, about $15/hour. Their retrofits comply with Building Performance Institute standards. Retrofit is interested in partnering with other companies, but so far it's only EnergyReady. If you'd like more information, you can contact Amanda Giorgio at agior...@retrofitbaltimore.org . She's interested in giving the presentation again. This presentation was aimed at Abell, but she's willing to meet other community associations. The presentation ran about 30 minutes, but with questions and discussion, it ran about an hour. Hello, neighbors, There was a serious stabbing attack on our block. The story we heard is that a man returned home to find an intruder who attacked and stabbed him multiple times. Police arrived about 10 minutes after the 911 call. I saw them wheel the man away on a stretcher. He was conscious and lifted his head. I could see blood on his legs. Somebody heard him joke that he thinks he won't be going to work tomorrow. Guilford at 31st is taped off as a crime scene and the police just asked everyone to go inside. [Chat] Baltimore Food Coop ready to launch soon
Hello, neighbors, I stopped by Mill Valley, which will be the location for the Baltimore Food Coop. They will launch when they get 1000 people paying an initial membership fee of $100. They have about 880 who have pledged to join, so they are close to their goal. Here's their site: http://www.baltimorefoodcoop.com/ . Kathleen and I decided to sign up. It's uncertain how this will go, so it's a leap of faith. But it seems they're going about it with some good organization and they have a good location. The last food coop that tried to launch was the Village Food Coop next to the Yabba Pot on Saint Paul. I went there once, and it seemed amateur-ish and quite pricey. Christine, Don't follow the link in the message! The mail has the signs that Rob Books's account is compromised. Note the many recipients and the odd nature of the message. [Chat] Aldi store has good prices
Hello, all, Aldi is a chain of German supermarkets that several years ago opened here. We'd never been in one until Kathleen went to the Aldi in Highlandtown. I heard that they are owned by the same family that owns Trader Joe's. Aldi has an everyday low price scheme, without a lot of sales and promotions. Some examples (not on sale): 2 lbs long grain brown rice $1.29 cone coffee filters #4 size $1.59 German pumpernickel bread $1.49 tub of butter substitute $0.99 bran flakes $1.49 I think it's worth going back if you're down that way. --Emil -- Emil Volcheck volch...@acm.org http://EmilVolcheck.com/ ___ Chat mailing list Chat@charlesvillage.info http://charlesvillage.info/mailman/listinfo/chat_charlesvillage.info archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/chat@charlesvillage.info/

Re: [Chat] [Discussion] Photo Film develop
Daniel, I second John's recommendation for TechLab. If you ever need to process slide film, Blakeslee Advertising at 916 N. Charles offers this service to the public (as of a year ago). I occasionally shoot slides in an old stereo camera, and this is where I go for processing. --Emil On Fri, Feb 26, 2010 at 09:06, Daniel Grayskull grayskul...@yahoo.com wrote: Does anyone know if there are any places in the local area that still develops film? [Chat] Help bring Google's Gigabit fiber to Baltimore
Hello, neighbors, Please check out the initiative to help Baltimore win the privilege of being among the first locations chosen for Google's Fiber for Communities initiative. Visit http://www.bmorefiber.com/ to learn more. The selection closes March 26th. The more support we get the better, so please spread the word. Google is choosing a few locations to roll out highspeed (Gigabit per second, or 1000 Mbps) optical fiber. Verizon is not serving Baltimore with their fiber optical FiOS service, so let's hope Google will give it to us first. Highspeed fiber in Baltimore will be a powerful enhancement to the Internet infrastructure that will enhance business opportunities, telecommuting, and better Internet service for citizens. Re: [Chat] watch repair
Christine, Thanks for this referral. I did get around to contacting Mark Mitchell. It turns out that he does only clocks -- not watches. The Urbanite did an article on Read St. stores that quotes Mr. Mitchell. His shop is #3 on the list here: http://www.urbanitebaltimore.com/includes/print.cfm?sectionID=4IssueID=20ArticleID=174print=1 Mitchell referred me to Burke Pieper: (410) 252-8024. Burke works out of the Baltimore Gold and Silver Co. on Charles St., just north of Saratoga. I brought my watch there and spoke to one staff member who said he would do a quick check. If it needed repairs, they would leave it for Burke, who is their expert. As it turns out, the watch started running again after they opened the case and adjusted the stem. They didn't charge me anything for the ten minutes of their time they spent looking at it, which was a surprise to me. I was prepared to pay at least a small charge. In any case, I haven't needed to call Mr. Pieper, but I can say that the Baltimore Gold and Silver Co. are good people to deal with. --Emil On Fri, Jul 3, 2009 at 14:28, Christine Gray langwi...@comcast.net wrote: Emil--Mark Mitchell at 206 West Read St has repaired/tuned up the clocks in Penn Station, at MICA, and the Library of Congress.
