Re: [Chat] Trees and tree pits

2015-07-30 Thread John
It is usually the property owner's responsibility to maintain the tree wells
and the sidewalk.

From what I recall, homeowners seeking trees from the City of Baltimore or Tree
Baltimore usually sign an agreement to care for the tree before one will be
planted.

We have two bald cypresses newly installed. We can water pretty easily though
with water rates going up and up I'm a little hesitant. But the bigger
problem is weeds. They attract rats and trash.

Are homeowners supposed to weed or with the city do it? Or is it covered by
 the CVCBD surtax?

The articles in The Sun said that the liquor stores being targeted for closure
were in predominantly poor neighborhoods and linked to violent crime, so I was
shocked to see that Schnapp Shop was on the list.

I think the store is a real asset to the neighborhood. The owners are extremely
friendly and hardworking, and I would hate to see them lose their business over
what seems to be a very arbitrary decision. It makes no sense to me why city
officials would take this wholesale approach rather than focus on known problem
establishments. I'm sure there are plenty of conforming businesses that
cause more problems for their communities.

2012-06-06 Thread John Spurrier

Since Johns Hopkins University owns the property they could be more selective
and create lease terms that would be more attractive to the types of
restaurantsthat will be supported by both the neighborhood and JHU community.
We don'tneed another lard pit like Ruby Tuesdays. But if we leave it up to the
Cordish Companywe will get crap.

I never liked it but then again I don't care for chain restaurants. With the
recent openings of Quizno's and Ledo's I'm afraid it will not be a cool, local
restaurant. Would love to have a B Bistro type place. Greg Alexander

The only ones in Baltimore that I know of that is familiar with bocce ball is
LaScala Resturant, who has an indoor court in their restaurant on Eastern Ave.

I just checked out the Baltimore Bocce League link that Chad Abrams just
supplied and I think I have just figured out that the Hampden Group lists Wyman
Park as the location, for league play at 6:30 pm on Thursdays starting July 12.
You can signup between now and June 30 as a member of a team, or as a free
agent, or you can start a team. People currently registering. Groups are just
forming and no teams are listed yet. Just individuals signing up.

So even though the Groupon Link does not list this location, the 50% off
Groupon offer still works for the Hampden Group which is demonstrated by the
number of people who have registered since the Groupon came out in the last 2
days.

What is our next move?

Paul,
Many residents complained because the awning was illuminated and could be seen

Many of you know that the former convenience store on 27th between Guilford and
Calvert Street that had been run by Ms Sue was sold over the summer and
completely gutted and renovated, inside and out.

The fellows that opened the new store are great!  Its clean, well stocked with
myriad needs, deli meats, eggs, and everything you need in the middle of a
recipe.  They also take requests to stock your any need.  It opened under the
name Jalines.

They installed a huge canopy that kept you dry while coming and going, and
while it might not have been for everyone, it had the name and tag lines of the
store to advertise its presence.  I'm guessing it cost more than $5,000.
Imagine our surprise last week when we saw them painting over the sign, and
removing any and all exterior signage.  The owners told us somebody complained
- not one house faces 27th Street - and they had to remove everything.  They
were visibly upset, and now are threatening to leave the neighborhood.  Who
would cause such a fuss?

I think the neon lights say New Wyman Park Restaurant.

Trucks wrapped around the block when I drove by this morning,
so I stopped and asked what's up. They are filming
the HBO show Veep starring Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, and it
should be out in a few months.

I think Stokes forgot which radio station was interviewing him and

Charles Village's other City Council representatives Mary Pat Clarke
is of far greater service to the neighborhood and Belinda Conaway
was the one championing the 25th Street Station development.

Jessica and her friends stay up most nights well into the morning hours and,
though I believe they are taking off their shoes, this is not resolving the
problem. I believe a number of people are living in the upstairs apartment - I
see 2-3 girls leaving regularly and they seem to also have their boyfriends
over frequently and that makes for much more movement upstairs since they stay
up most of the night. Rugs or carpeting must be laid down on the floors. And if
this does not work, then you will need to sound proof the floors. Not being
able to sleep at night in my home is a serious violation of the condo rules. It
is your responsibility that this problem gets solved promptly. Thank you,

The same questions occurred to me when I saw near the bottom of the post i.e.
in one of the early emails in the exchange, a reference to Louisiana law and
the Code Napoléon (since Louisiana is the only state whose laws are based on
French rather than  English law).  So I quickly  found myself wondering how
something that seems to have occurred in Louisiana got onto this list serve.

Steve,

Odette and I are renting a storage locker from ezStorage at Charles 26th
Streets.
The facilitity is climate controlled and secured. They offer a 10% discount to
CVCA
members. The terms are month to month. We started with a 10' x 5' locker which
with the discount cost us about $65/month. Last week we upgraded to a 10' x 10'
space for a total of $83/month. The pricing varies with the season and demand.

  A little before 6 p.m. this evening,
my doorbell rang. I opened the inner door but not the
outer security door which can only be opened with a
key. On my porch were a couple, a black male and a
white female, college age or more likely a little bit
older. They said that they had the wrong person.

A few minutes later, I opened the inner door again.
The couple were still there, and the man asked me to open
the outer security door. I refused. He then
tried to sell me on saving money by switching to a
guaranteed fixed electric rate instead of paying BGE.
I told him that I was not interested, even though he
persisted until I ended the conversation. He was
carrying a notebook. The woman basically was silent.

Something did not add up. How can they have the wrong
person and then try to sell me something? And why were
they still there? Anyway, I reported it to 911, to a
JHU cop who was parked across the street a few minutes
later, and to Northern District police who came moments
later in response to my 911 call. They said that
they would be looking for the couple. I do not know
whether, if I had opened my security door, the couple would
have rushed in to grab something in my house or worse.
I have seen a report that in a nearby neighborhood, people
have rung doorbells and asked for someone who does not exist
on that block. When they have found a house where
nobody is home, they have broken in.

I write all this to urge that everyone be very careful
about opening a door to a stranger. And if things
really do not add up but look suspicious, call 911.
What I encountered this evening may be legitimate, but my
guess is that it is not. And if it is part of a knock,
run in and grab something, and run scheme or some other
scheme, the police will definitely appreciate your giving
them a heads up on what is happening. After all, the
cops cannot be everywhere, so we have to be additional eyes
  and ears for them.

Northern District does an excellent job, but we need to
give them all the help we can.

  Steve

Hi all,  Sometime between 4:30 and 7 PM this evening, someone
stole a box of hay from my porch at 3040 Guilford.  I run a rabbit
rescue and sell supplies to help fund our work.  Often I leave them
on my porch for people to pick up.  I'm sure whoever stole it was
thinking it was something more useful/valuable than hay.  On the
off chance that they discovered it was something they didn't want
and ditched in on the street or in the alley, and you see it, please let
me know.  It wasn't useful to them but it is to me.  This is only
the second time this has happened in years and years but both times
it has happened right before Christmas when boxes on people's porches
are likely to be full of nice presents.

Re: [Chat] contractor for a rubber roof?

2010-12-06 Thread John Spurrier

Locating the source of roofing problems can be a challenge because most
evidence of a leak doesn't correspond with an obvious defect directly above.
As water tries to make its way to the lowest point it doesn't always follow the
path suggested by the pitch of the roof. I know people whose leaks came from
a poorly roofed/flashed firewall on the neighbor's roof.

We love One World Cafe for brunch.

I stopped by Moxie's and found out that they have mostly all the same hair
cutters/stylists (if you can call them that) as they did when it was Tempachi.
Honestly, that is good for the stylists who kept their jobs with the change in
ownership, but it is also disappointing because my hair and Eric's hair has
been butchered every time we had gone there, and we don't require anything
fancy. Unfortunately, Eric kept trying it multiple times, but the results were
always the same---BAD. I really don't understand why it is so challenging for
people to cut a man's hair in an even, tapered when they do it all day long
every day. If anyone has a recommendation for a good barber/men's hair stylist
in the area (not too expensive), we would love to hear about one.

Thanks.

Directed by Jonathan Demme, Stop Making Sense was shot over the course
of three nights at Hollywood's Pantages Theater in December of 1983, as the
Talking Heads were touring to promote their Speaking in Tongues album.

The Friends of Wyman Park Dell will be screening the film at dusk (approx.
9:00 pm). Music by Muscle Twin and Puddle starts at 7:00 pm. Bring a
blanket/chairs, dinner and a cooler. Please invite your friends.

Re: [Chat] roof maintenance

2010-04-21 Thread John Spurrier
Most of our homes are roofed with layers of felt paper and hot tar.. When these
roofs are installed they usually come with a ten year warranty as long as you
pay the company to recoat every three years. When they recoat they also check
and repair flashing, vent collars, etc. I paid $400 to have my roof
silvercoated the last time it was due to be coated.

The hext time I am in the market for a new roof I will go with a 20 year rubber
roof because they require significantly less maintenance.

Cathy,

I would recommend that you contact Officer O'Donnell of the Northern

south on Calvert Street and should be helpful. The number to reach him

prostitution

Hi, all-

I know that I have sought advice from the group before about how to proceed
with letting the appropriate authorities know of prostitution in front of my
house, but I am in needing of reminding about who in the City to contact. Very
early this morning, two provocative women were on the corner of 27th and
Calvert, and one ran screaming up and down 27th around 4 am (it remains unclear
as to why). I have called 911 and 311 in the past about the activity, which
goes inside (perhaps in one of the rentals next door) during the colder months,
but returns to the open air as the weather warms. It is unsettling to say the
least and I'd like to get the proper authorities on it ASAP. Thanks for any
productive information you might send my way... I am not looking for debate on
prostitution, the part it plays in drug or gang activity, etc., just contacts
in the City to address the issue, thanks.

Re: [Chat] [Discussion] 3100 block of St. Paul

2010-03-08 Thread John Spurrier

Christine,

I bet that Greg Alexander and Paul Williams would have some suggestions because

they research the history of houses for clients. Also, old phone directories
would

be good source of information. You might find some at the Enoch Pratt central

library.

According to the history of the neighborhood written by Jacques Kelly 3101 was
built in 1921

as the Homestead Apartments and Drug Store and 3103-3119 were built as private
residences

circa 1923 and later converted to commercial uses.

A Brief History of Charles Village written by Greg and Paul also mentions an A
 P in the location

later occupied by the Homewood Deli.

Without going to the Dept. of City Records, is there a simple way to see what

I think an interesting story could be written about how the block has

Silber's Bakery, a landmark Baltimore firm for 70 years troubled recently by

Christine,

I think that the Homewood Deli opened some time in the 70s, and I remember that
it had a Silber's. So I wonder if Silber's might have moved when the Homewood
Deli opened. That would explain both of our recollections about Silber's.

One thing that I remember is that the Sun used to have a restaurant critic
named John Dorsey who wrote a restaurant review once a week. He wrote a review
of the Homewood Deli in which he said that the Deli was a lot like Elsie's in
Cambridge, Mass. I have very fond memories of eating chopped chicken liver
sandwiches and tongue sandwiches and of having milkshakes (frappes in the
Boston area dialect) at Elsie's, and while the Homewood Deli was okay, it was
no Elsie's. Also, Elsie's was smaller than the Homewood Deli and was always
packed with customers.

Before that, in the 60s, though, I think it was a Silber’s Bakery.

There was another one on Greenmount, which used to be a wonderful shopping

You can still see part of its art deco front. I think it’s a men’s clothing

[Chat] Snow Emergency Routes

2010-02-08 Thread John Spurrier

Please see the message below which I copied from The Baltimore Sun's website:

February 8, 2010

Baltimore to start towing cars from snow emergency routes

Baltimore will tow cars parked on snow emergency routes, according to city
officials.

Remember, Phase II of the snow emergency plan is in effect.

Drivers can park their cars for free in some school parking lots and in
city-owned garages in Little Italy, Federal Hill, Fells Point and downtown
Baltimore.

With temperatures in the 20s today though, digging out one's car does not seem
like a pleasant pastime.

You are supposed to be able to call 311 to find out where your car might be if
it is towed, but I'm checking to find out where the cars will be taken --- and
how much it will cost to retrieve it.

Believe it or not, NO reaction from our elected and government personnel to my
Sunday rant about the contempt of court case concerning the abandoned house at
300 E Lorriane!

I'm now interested in how much tax revenue we have all lost from this house
continuing to be taxed at an owner occupied rate, when in fact, its been
completely abandoned since 2004, and the owner has been in contempt of court
for six months.  Despite a $500 per day fine imposed last November, she was
allowed to pay property tax of just $650 in February: something is seriously
out of sync in the city government, or the owner knows the right people at City

 Mayor Shelia Dixon:

I have been pressing, complaining, and following the court case concerning the
clearly abandoned and rapidly deteriorating property at 300 E. Lorraine Street
in Charles Village to no avail.  Sunday, I learned to my disgust, tha t this
blighted property is being taxed at the owner occupied rate: no one can, nor
has, occupied the house since 2004 (even the vagrants have run away).

I notified the people I've been working with for two years now with modest to
no success (in the to: line above) on Sunday, and NOT ONE has replied, not even
a polite reply saying work is in progress, concerning the myriad ongoing
problems outlined below, which have been previously reported over two years ago
now.

So I ask you as mayor: Why is this house being taxed as a resident occupied
house after 5 years as an abandoned property, and why has her contempt of court
case not been enforced a full year later?  The house was to have been torn down
in December of 2007.  How can the tax office accept a tax payment in February
of this year, when she is in contempt of court to transfer sell or demolish the
house, as condemned, and accept her claim that it is owner occupied?  This is
tax fraud, and the owner needs to be retroactively fined and taxed as an
abandoned property.

In my opinion, you all have failed us residents miserably, and I'm now going
to the press20to expose this gross inaction.  Paul

Yesterday I used the City's 311 Online service to arrange forbulk trash pickup
in time for the normal collection day whichis the fourth Monday of the month
(June 23, 2008). I received an email confirmation of my request, however Ilater
received a message saying that the pickup had been scheduled for Monday, July

before a scheduled collection date may be too late. Apparently the City is
cutting off bulk trash collectiononce they have scheduled 450 stops for any
given date. John

Re: [Chat] Bert's?

2007-08-26 Thread John Spurrier

Judy,

Competition from Chipolte could be a factor, though the owner
of Rocky Run mentioned a problem with declining sales over 4 years.

It doesn't surprise me that Record Tape Traders is closing. File sharing
programs, on-line music sales and cd burners in every computer have
changed the way music is exchanged. A generation ago Record Tape
Traders capitalized on on the growing trend of home taping by allowing
customers to 'rent' records overnight for $1.00. In 2007 consumers
no longer need to visit a retailer to get their music.

Re: [Chat] Fwd: Would-be rescuer stabbed 3 times

2007-08-02 Thread John Spurrier

The police response is indeed distressing. I am curious about the facts behind
the
assault that was in progress when the good samaritans intervened. Does anyone
know
if that was random? a robbery in progress? or possibly a drug deal gone bad or
an
incident that started in a nearby bar or restaurant?

Many residents of Baltimore are comfortable knowing that because they're not
involved in drug activity or a bad domestic relationship their chances of
becoming thevictim of a violent crime are greatly reduced.

When you are a victim of crime statistics mean nothing. I was robbed at
gunpoint in 1998 right in front of my house. Coincidentally there was an
off-duty police officer parked in the garage less than 50 feet from my home at
the time. When I ran to his vehicle after the incident he was reluctant to get
involved. When I told a few friends about being robbed, one responded, I
remember the first time I got mugged. as if he was meant, 'Welcome to the
club.

Have you all heard about this? if it is true this is truly frightening.
Charlene Hudnall [EMAIL PROTECTED] 5/2/2007 9:53 AM This came up at our
Community Association meeting. If you or anyone you know travels through
Baltimore regularly, take heed and pass the word. At Tuesday's community
meeting at the SW District Police Station, we received this warning:Don't flash
headlights at any car with no lights on!Police officers working with the DARE
program tell us that if you are driving after dark and see an on! -coming car
with no headlights on, do not flash your lights at them! This is a common
Bloods member initiation game. The new gang member under initiation
drives along with no headlights; the first car to flash their headlights at him
is now his target. He is required to turn around, chase that car and than
shoot to kill every individual in the vehicle in order to complete his
initiation requirements. Their intent is to have all the new bloods nationwide
drive around on Friday and Saturday nights with their headlights off. In order
to be accepted into the gang, they have to shoot and kill individuals in the
first auto that does a courtesy flash to warm them that their lights are
off.Make sure you share this information with all the drivers in your family!

warned.Charlene HudnallAdministrative Assistant II UMMS 22 S. Greene

About 7:00 this morning, I saw a full-grown pug wandering the 2600 and 2700
blocks of Calvert. This dog had, I am certain, gotten out of its house.

I was not able to catch it.

It is beige with the usual black pug face.

It seemed to be going yard to yard looking for its home.

Re: [Chat] Board of Zoning Appeals

2007-02-01 Thread John Spurrier
Rob,

Is the property located in Charles Village? The Charles Village Civic Assn
has a longstanding policy of opposing conversions to multi-units for a number
of reasons, one of which is the increased demand for parking. Peter Duvall who
works for the CVCBD has been involved in many of these hearings.

Chat@charlesvillage.info; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Chat] Board of Zoning
Appeals Does anyone have experience with zoning hearings at the city Board
of Appeals? A friend of mine is going in to oppose the conversion of some
houses on his street to multi-family (read college apartment) dwellings
because they are already being rented to multiple unrelated college
students against zone and are a regular disturbance to the neighborhood. I
want to help him and his neighbors be prepared to make the best case
against the zoning appeal. -- Rob Carlson [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [Chat] Two Sisters Grille is a success!

2006-12-27 Thread John Spurrier
Here's my recollection of the businesses that occupied the locationadded to a
couple names mentioned to me by longtime residents(in
reverse chronological order):

Two Sisters1.7th Generation
Styxx
27th Street StationRon's Pub
McNair's
Beefeaters

Trivia Question: What was the name of the restaurant that occupied the 2
Sisters building in the 80's. I recall that it was very popular with business
people for lunch, and the food was very good--but I cannot remember the name.

Re: [Chat] Two Sisters Grille is a success!

2006-12-27 Thread John Spurrier
Christine,

After 27th Street Station closed the owners divided the building intoa couple
apartments on the second floor and rented kitchen space to
a catering company on the first floor in addition to leasing space to abar. At
the time the building had 2 commercial kitchens. I heard that
a couple pastry chefs/bakers operated out of the building at different times
over the past decade or so. Charm City Cakes may have been
one of those tenants. I assumed Richard was referring to the restaurants
located in the building.John

John, I thought/think that at one point Charm City Cakes were there—before Duff
moved the bakery to Remington.

[Chat] Thanks - Solstice Celebration

2006-12-23 Thread John Spurrier
Thanks to everyone who made Thursday night's Winter
Solstice Celebration in Wyman Park Dell a success. Over
160 people gathered to enjoy a fire, Celtic music, and
mulled cider and holiday cookies provided by Gertrude's

Re: [Chat] cornice painting

2006-11-07 Thread John Spurrier

I will let you know as I get more information. I anticipate
each neighbor getting an individual quote as well as a
quote for work to be done if more than x residents
decide to have the work done at the same time.
