Fwd: Time to propose a CS Capstone Project!

2015-07-22 Thread jan i
Hi.

I have just received this, do we want to participate ?

I have participated earlier with mixed results.

rgds
jan I.

Subject: Time to propose a CS Capstone Project!
To: j...@apache.org

Colleagues --

Have you always wanted a particular software tool developed for your use,
but
have never had the time to do it yourself? Well then, read on. Have I got a
deal
for you!

My name is Kevin McGrath. I am the instructor who runs the OSU Computer
Science
Senior Capstone class. The Capstone class is a 3-quarter (Fall, Winter,
Spring)
career preparation experience. The major piece of this is doing a
significant
3 member team project.

When the students come to the first class on September 24, I want to present
them with a list of exciting, creative, and real-experience software
engineering
project possibilities. This is where you come in. I am looking for you to
use
your needs and experience to propose those project possibilities.

A web site has been setup to give you more information, and let you enter
and
edit your project proposals:

http://eecs.oregonstate.edu/capstone/submission/

You have until September 24 to get yours in. That is the date the students
will
see them, and will start the selection process. In that process, I ask the
students to bid on their top 5 choices. I ultimately make the final
project
assignments, but I try to take their preferences into account. I find I get
better results that way.

There will likely be more projects proposed than students teams to do them.
*So,
really sell your project.* Definitely don't understate its cool-ness
factor! The
more excited you sound in the description, the more excited they are likely
to
be when doing it. Excitement is contagious!

After projects have been selected, we will follow a client-contractor model
in
which I run the software contract company and you are one of our valued
clients. The students report to me, but you, as client, work directly with
them to design the requirements, set the timeline, approve the progress. You
also get to help assign grades.

This year I'm asking you to explicitly distinguish the projects that are
research oriented vs. those that are more software engineering focused. If
you
would like to propose a research project for the students, please indicate
this
using the Additional Comments field.

Given the nature of a research oriented project, I find that better results
are
had if the students are initially aware of the type of project. If you are
unsure, that is not a problem. I'm happy to work with you on the details of
your
project -- just submit it, and then we can chat about any changes that
might be
necessary.

Any project can be proposed from anybody. I don't care where you are from,
just
that your project represents an excellent software engineering experience
for
the students.

Do remember, however, that these are seniors. They have taken the core
classes
so far, but most have not taken some of the electives that would really
help in
some projects, such as graphics, AI, computer vision, etc. Keep that in mind
when proposing.

If you have questions or want to discuss project possibilities, feel free to
contact me at:

 D. Kevin McGrath
 Instructor, Computer Science
 Oregon State University

Thanks for your time -- I look forward to working with you!

AOO extensions/templates after SourceForge outage

2015-07-22 Thread Rory O'Farrell
This is not a complaint, just a comment for information:

After the recent SourceForge outage, the pages being linked off the AOO
download page for AOO extensions and AOO templates are not the detailed pages
previously linked. Of course, restoration may still be in process; if so,
please disregard this post. But in the event that there has been some mixup,
please could we have the former pages back?

OpenOffice uses the fonts installed on your computer. If you have an Old
English font, or can find one, download it and install it on your computer
using whatever method your operating system requires (see its instructions for
that). Then start OpenOffice and the font should be available to it. Note that
sometimes it is best to restart the computer entirely (power off, then after a
short delay power on) so that the operating system finds the font. OpenOffice
only finds fonts when it starts up.

Links on the http://www.openoffice.org/download page are unchanged. So
the redirection is with all likelihood a temporary workaround on the
SourceForge side until their servers are fully restored.

I haven't checked, but the current state likely already allows us to
update (in the OpenOffice source code, I mean) dictionaries for 4.1.2 so
it is good news.

  Andrea.

Barbara;

As you appear to be using Windows as your operating system just install
the Old English font to your system as you would any other font. AOO
uses the fonts installed in the Fonts folder on Windows.

Thanks Rory,

Actually restoration of project web data is still in-progress, hope to
finally have good news in hours. At this time 18 of 26 letters are
complete, but service restoral will come right after data validation. Once
'a' completes, we will be moving AOO project pair on to a dedicated
delivery path, with dedicated backups.

We are really sorry for the inconvenience, are we're doing our best to take
it back asap.

Re: Is there any way to convert help content to ODF or word document?

2015-07-22 Thread aronsoyol
Thank you

My question is, why do you want such document?

Because user want an independent manual(or guide book). Like this
https://www.openoffice.org/support/books.html

But those books in amazon are 1,not translated 2,may be licensed 3.not
editable (we did some hack, and we need to explain what is different from
original openoffice) , 4. not correspond to newest version of OpenOffice.

So I think it is probably good to just convert help contents to an editable
document. Or is there any easiest way else to do this work?

Thank you very much and best regards.

 Hi,

You can do it, but it makes no sense.

The help files are written in XML, file name extension is xhp. You find
these files in the *.jar archives in the folder help in an installed AOO.
For the in-build help viewer they are transformed to HTML by the
transformation main_transform.xsl and styled by default.css. You can
look at the result of this, when you call the help, e.g. via F1, and choose
HTML source from the context menu.

The help is not organized as a lot of independent files, but it is more
like a building set. Some parts are embedded in several pages, some parts
are only shown under special conditions, some parts are not shown directly
in the help, but only as tooltip. Contents and Index are no special files,
 but generated.

The help is context sensitive. If you are working on a special function in
Calc, calling the help will show the information about this special
 function, for example.

For all these reasons, it makes no sense to collect all these files into
 one document.

My question is, why do you want such document?

 Kind regards
 Regina

If you do the consultancy also for OpenOffice then you can add it here.
Otherwise you should ping again on the Debian mailing list only.
