I recently acquired a Drake 1A receiver in nice condition except that
three coil slugs are missing in the 20,15, and 10m antenna coils. It
appears Drake used the same slug and phenolic coil assembly for all coils in
 the 1A.

I've seen these used a million times before: It's a round ferrite slug
with a straight blade slot on one end of the ferrite core. The other end of
the ferrite is attached to a long bass screw. The mating phenolic coil form
assembly is the type that just snaps into the chassis.

I now it's a longshot, but anyone know a source? Is it possible they
simply were not used on the 20m-10m ant coils?

  Gents,

My TR-7 started doing something unusual this morning.  I tried to check
into a 40m phone net and I noticed my external VSWR meter going crazy.  It's
a dual-needle type and I would start talking and things would be okay and
then the reflected needle would instantly jump to infinity.  Unkey and try
again and it would do the same...normal for a second or two and then a jump
to infinity.  I think I saw the same behavior when I first got this radio
and did the full alignment when adjusting the two big power output pots and
it went into oscillation.  (I don't recall the exact names of those pots but
I recall one was in the PA section and one underneath the radio.)  My radio
seemed to be a little touchy to those adjustments and wanted to oscillate
but all has been well for the last 18 months or so until this morning.  As
luck would have it, I recently rebuilt my microphone cable, re-arranged my
ham desk, and adjusted my antenna slightly so I've touched about everything
but I can't find any evidence that I have any kind of flaky connection in
the antenna as that was my first thought given the reflected power
indication.  The problem is that the reflected needle just goes from zero to
infinity and I think that's exactly what it did when it went into
oscillation.  My VSWR meter uses an inline directional coupler arrangement
(Palstar WM-150)on the input to the tuner.  The receive strength is rock
solid and we have no wind whatsoever on the antenna today.  I tried reducing
mic gain and so on but the problem still happens.  It doesn't necessarily
make sense to me that oscillating would cause the VSWR needle to jump but
I'm pretty sure this is what it did when I adjusted those pots about 2 years
ago.  Thought I would check with the experts before dragging it out of the
operating position and trying to adjust those pots.

 Thanks...

On 80 meters into a dummy load on CW you should get around 140 watts when
the ALC light just turns on.

As you go up in frequency the output will decrease. On 10 meters, you
should get over 100 watts CW into a dummy load when the ALC light just
starts to turn on.

I wouldn't run any tests without a load. The protective circuits will
reduce the output power to protect the final transistors.

There has not been a lot of talk about replacing the PIN diodes on the 2nd
IF / Audio board. They are still available.

Good luck with the rig.

[Drakelist] 4 Board set for TR-7 modifications

2009-09-18 Thread Tom Evans, AG9X
I have a copy of the 1992 Communications Quarterly article Improving the
Drake TR-7 by Scott Prather, N7NB

The features provided are

   - Full receive coverage from 10KHz to 30 MHz with no reduction in
   sensitivity across the entire range.

   - Smooth, quiet, full break-in (QSK) CW operation at full output power.

   - A major improvement in the S/N ration of weak CW signals.

   - A reduction in cooling fan noise, because the fan operates only when it
   is needed.

Along with the article is a set of 4 circuit boards I purchased from Far
Circuits:

   - Front-end filter card

   - QSK card

   - Audio filter card

   - Fan control card

Sounds like the antenna relay to me.

To test that theory, attach a lead to the VLF Antenna input on the
rear Aux connector and see if signals get stronger. That input
bypasses the antenna relay. Be careful not to transmit with the VLF
Antenna attached.

I attached a picture of the Accessories socket pinout. Pin 7 is the
VLF Antenna input.

There's a photo of the antenna relay here:

Does this occur only in CW?

Early TR-7s required a mod to prevent them from waking up in transmit
when turned on in CW mode. Perhaps that hasn't been done to yours.

The Pop mod was done to the 2nd IF/Audio board. It connected R1112
to the +10R line instead of +10 CW line. Also added a 1.5 K resistor
in series with CR1119. I have a dog-eared copy of the Pop mod if
anyone wants a scan of it.

Ron,

I don't disagree with in some cases purchasing a TR7A is a buyer beware.

But I must say that IF the TR-7 has had all the modifications that
upgrade a TR-7 to a TR-7A, the only remaining significant difference
is the use of a '1496 balanced modulator in the 2nd IF/Audio board
rather than the diode detector. For all the other changes, Drake
supplied the components and installation instructions free of charge.
What a company!

range and we know the TR7A appeared around serial number 10,600. So in
some cases purchasing a TR7A is a buyer beware.

I wrote an article on how to identify the model differences for that very
reason. Drake did in fact put the serial number in two places, on the
rear panel and on the inside, front side of the front sub panel. It is
major surgery to get to that area which is why most folks would not
attempt.  But to prove a point, it is one of several way to identify the
 exact model.

Peter,

I also have a 1.8 KHz SSB filter. When I switch from the 2.3 KHz
filter to the 1.8, the extreme lows and a little of the extreme highs
of the audio are reduced. I do not hear any echo.

You can do a quick test using the TR-7 S-meter. It's not 100%
accurate, but it's fairly close.

Here's what I did.

1. Put the TR-7 on a dummy load on 10 meters.
2. Turn on the calibrator.
3. Zero beat the calibrator frequency.
4. Turn on the PBT.
5. Adjust the PBT control for maximum S-meter reading.
6. Tune upward to the frequency where the S-meter drops one S-unit
from the peak. Write down the frequency.
7. Tune downward to the frequency where the S-meter drops one S-unit
from the peak. Write down this frequency.

Here's what I measured:

2.3 KHz Standard SSB filter
28751.1 high
28748.9 low
-
  2.2 KHz

1.8 KHz Narrow SSB filter
28751.0 high
28749.5 low
-
  1.5 KHz

6.0 KHz AM filter
28752.9 high
28747.2 low
-
  5.7 KHz

 Hello

I have inherited a TR7/PS7/MN7 station, which was not working, but
rumored to have a power supply problem. Turns out it was the power
supply regulation board was shutting down the supply after reaching
about 4 volts.. By removing a feedback lead, the supply would regulate
to 13.5v. I replaced the key components on the board - the regulator
chip (NTE equivalent), a couple of transistors, a zener, resistor values
all check OK, so the problem is not the 723 chip, but some part of the
over-voltage protection function. It is not the is large clamping diode
that grounds the supply in case of a runaway, but somewhere in the
 'feedback loop' to the 723.

 2 Questions:

 1. anybody have an idea what could be causing this? I have not replace
 ALL the parts (yet!)
 2. Does anybody know where to get a higher quality schematic scan - the
one I have is pretty 'muddy', with some voltages at key points on the
circuit being unreadable, which will no doubt lead me to the solution.

Thanks in advance to the members of a great list!
