Re: [Dx4win] VK5 DX Zones
As an Aussie ham, I was taught VK3FM/6, for instance, was the way to go if I, as a VK3, was operating portable from WA, VK6. Re: [Dx4win] Worked all (British) counties
Hello Mike. Please...allow me to drive you crazy, one more time. Yes, I knew/know that from looking back at my 8.05 award file but, when I bring up a 'G' station in my 9.03 log (or log one, which I did yesterday), there is NO WGBC file available on my logging screen (from the Custom Award' box). There were, in fact, 26 awards available there when the new 'G' station was logged, but not the one I want, the WGBC award! It appears to have disappeared. But surely it could not disappear just from me. In following this little mystery along, I 'found' the WGBC award file was indeed found at DX4Win 9/Save/Custawds/WGBC, as a text file. Then, I confirmed, from my logbook, that past 'G' QSOs sometimes have the county appended in the 'AwdStrng' column (no doubt because I choose to record their county information). But...even in those examples, the 'Custom Award' and 'Custom award value' boxes are EMPTY! How is that? The information is retained, but not the means of providing the information? Follow...I hope so! For new 'G' contacts, no 'WGBC' award is available. Full stop. Mike, sorry to bother you again... but sometimes program fixes end up being program problems. This 'appears' to be the latter. I do hope you can follow the explanation. And, I have sent my response to the reflector, as well as yourself, to let others know of my particular issue. BTW, hello again from VK3. Re: [Dx4win] [DX4WIN] Multiple QSOs Group number
Group numbers were increased 5-6 years ago. As reported, some 65K available now and I can use numbers above 256 without trouble. However, I do not use as many numbers as I used to before the increase because, as someone posted yesterday, I also bracket the same contest, over years, in the same group number. For me, much more easy to analyse within DX4Win. As with most posts to this and similar reflectors the 'problem' will almost certainly be in the individual set-up - something ticked (checked) that should not be, something forgotten that needs doing, etc. Good luck with the fix - it works, it just needs to be set up correctly. [Dx4win] JT44 mode issue!
I still use DX4Win, despite the authors complete lack of interest for the past five or so years. But the problems I don't like with the program continue to add, and have just about reached the limit of my patience. For instance, there is no way to easily maintain existing name and QTH information in the 'Notes for this QSO' field when there is a change in either/both the callsign owners name or, much more commonly, his QTH. Not life threatening but, for me, irritating. Yes, you can use the 'Notes for this call' box, but that's messy, to say the least. Then, I found out (as we all did) that DX4Win will not record a proper signal report for JT type modes - so I make do with manually recording it in the 'Notes for this QSO' box, and handwriting the report in the body of my QSL card - I have a 'Comment' line on my card, so it doesn't look 'too' bad! Then, I found out that I could not correctly record my JT9 QSOs - again a workaround, I make do with calling them 'JT44' QSOs, for the sole purpose of 'housing' them within DX4Win. But the QSL card was now looking distinctly messy before my 'manual intervention' corrects the mess. Yes, I could use an external label printing program - but why should I have to? Today, quite by accident (in fact, absolutely by accident) I found that, in recording 'JT9' QSOs as 'JT44' QSOs, that a JT44 QSO has no effect (again, I repeat, NO effect) on my DXCC totals - it does not update them. Unless someone can point out the error of my ways - in which case I will gladly stand corrected. So, I temporarily recorded all JT9 (JT44) QSOs as RTTY QSOs, and found two band/mode fills. Remember, when you are a keen DXer, small fish are sweet! The bitterness/frustration that you can possibly note in my writing is because a wonderful program, that I still fundamentally really like, is becoming a bit of a laughing stock among my contemporary VK mates, all of who have urged me to 'move on' to a more modern logger, or at least one that is still supported. Because NONE of them have these sorts of problems. In fact, it is wasn't for the sensational efforts of Jim AD1C over the past five years and the helpful hints to all over a long period from Guy ON4AOI, I fear DX4Win would have already fallen over - 'cause it is patently clear that Paul does not give a damn. So, two questions - (1) Can anyone verify that recording a QSO in 'JT44' mode doesn't update DXCC totals - or, if it does, tell me where I went wrong, and (2) Does anyone actually know if Paul is still alive, and could ask him what his intentions for DX4Win are. If it's to take no further effective interest, just tell us. We could all move on. That's the easy bit. Sorry for the 'cry' - but, by God, it's getting so frustrating. Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN UPDATE
DX4Win has been motionless in respect to program improvements for many years now, probably six or seven. The update from v7 to v8 was pretty much useless as the digital inclusion never was successful. I moved from WJ2O in 2004, when DX4Win was pretty much state of the art, at least in terms of amateur radio logging programs, and have watched it remain more or less motionless while a number of other programs simply passed it in terms of output. Or, at least, so I am told. At this stage, the only reason I don't move is that the two or three programs that are 'allegedly' at the top of the programming tree are so complex, and do so many things that I am not the slightest bit interested in, and take so much computer management skills and time that I cannot be bothered. DX4Win has peaked - if you want to have your logger do smarter things, you are going to have to move programs. Simple as that. Do I kike the situation - not really, but like the great majority of us, nought I can do about it. My view. [Dx4win] DX4Win wish list (In addition to xmmt.ocx)
I have only ever wanted one thing 'fixed' - the ability of the DX4Win logging program to retain the correct name/address information per QSO, regardless if the call sign has been logged before, or not. That a logging program cannot do that simple thing (remember, logging programs are/should be simple data collectors [or databases, to put it more correctly]) has always frustrated me - because I must use a 'workaround' to retain correct data (important data) rather than have the program do it property in the first place. And, I am well aware it will never be fixed (too hard, I was once told) but - that's my wish. Oh well! Some comments for a couple of the replies: To Joe, W4TV, I respectfully disagree. In 54 plus years of hamming I have found things that work for me. My suggestion of how I like to log receive, transceive and transmit frequencies has evolved over time, primarily in the age before computer logging, when I wrote QSL cards out by hand and used frequency rather than band. The DX station needs to see his transmit frequency on my QSL, not mine, which he doesn't log anyway. By doing receive/transceive frequency in one column and my transmit frequency in a separate column, I could always use the first frequency column in filling out the card, regardless of whether the QSO was simplex or split. I still prefer that arrangement for browsing my logs -- I want to see the DX's frequency first. I very well know the definition of QSX, but it doesn't really have anything to do with how I like to log QSO info. And it must be noted that my transmit frequency is ALWAYS logged by this method. And to Mike, R3BM, thank you for jogging my memory! I just had this nagging feeling that there was something I was leaving out, and auto connection to the cluster is it. Not just reconnect after interruption, but automatically connecting on DX4Win startup. I always use the same node (unless it's down for some reason), so DX4Win should at least to try to connect on program startup. It is a real annoyance to have to go through the connect sequence every time I start an operating session (even though it is just a mouse click, three presses of Enter and a mouse click on my Login macro button). My login macro issues an SH/DX/100 command to immediately populate the Spots window, and it would be nice if DX4Win did that as well. Both DXLab and HRDeluxe automatically connect on startup. Support for two rotators would be nice for those who are lucky enough to have two or more towers. I have only one 40 foot tower, so that feature wasn't on my list. Well, guys... [Dx4win] Lotwreport
Hi everyone. I have a question to ask about one of the 'idiosyncrasies' (as I see it) of V8.02. When I download a lotwreport for importing into DX4Win, almost always now I also receive a NOT FOUND report. Almost always, this particular report will 'feature' a QSL that has been previously confirmed by LOTW and recorded correctly in DX4Win. There will be some comment for its presence in this NOT FOUND report. But there is always a 'full stop' opposite the entry that depicts, I think, that the QSL is confirmed!! So why? I don't understand what DX4Win is telling me - in fact, given that the QSL is already confirmed in both LOTW and DX4Win, and the information is absolutely correct, I don't even understand why DX4Win is even bothering 'reporting' the QSL. Am I missing something brutally fundamental here. No problems, except that every time I receive such NOT FOUND report., I invariably check to see what the problem might be, and don't find a problem! But do seem to waste just a few minutes of my time. Does anyone have a point of view - and whether I need to do something to fix? I am not annoyed, not complaining, just wondering why! [Dx4win] Modes
It's is interesting watching the various posts , here and other places, about 'modes'. As far as DX4Win is concerned, I once got involved in this discussion thread, but used a workaround that 'satisfied' DX4Win, LOTW and me! It involved 'Olivia', now but not always supported by DX4Win, and a wonderful example of what I am about to say. The problem that has already arrived is that the good old amateur community has created a monster with 'modes', a monster that is going to take a fair bit of management in the future, and which is only going to be achieved with a fair bit of angst being felt by many, following a tough call from an important player, probably LOTW. The monster that has arrived is the mode, and specifically what mode, given that there are already very many, shall I say, oblique/boutique/nondescript/irrelevant/obscure modes already out there, and modern software and amateur thought will ensure many, many more in the near future, to a number that will be practically unmanageable as standalone modes. Might I say that, on this subject, we seriously risk disappearing up one's own major orifice. (I am sorry if this offends - I used it to indicate the seriousness that I forsee in the issue, already and in the future). BTW, I am not complaining, just commenting, because modes to me essentially mean Phone, CW, Digital (RTTY and PSK31) - and with a willingness in my heart to accept DATA as an all encompassing mode for all others. Folks, it's just my opinion. Can anyone place themselves in the shoes of the LOTW decision makers, now, and determine how we manage this 'monster' now, and into the future? Let me know. Cause every individual, every logging and contest program, LOTW, the whole shooting match, will have to comply. And be happy! I stand by with interest cause I think it will be a lot of fun! [Dx4win] LOTW confirmation in DX4Win
I have what appears to be an anomaly in the process DX4Win uses to confirm QSLs received back from LOTW. I am using 8.02, and use the 'Group Number' and 'Group Name' feature to differentiate which of my two callsigns I used, or which contest I was operating. The anomaly is apparent when I use both of my two callsigns for a QSO to the same station, generally only a couple of minutes apart. (Why I do this is for another forum, just for the moment accept that I do - the QSOs are only ever for a new band/mode, per callsign, only). I will give an example so you know what I am talking about! ZL7T6 March 2009 0109 UTC 17 MCW My call VK3FM Let's call this QSO 1 ZL7T6 March 2009 0110 UTC 17 MCW My call VK3CEWLet's call this QSO 2 It appears from all I can 'see' within LOTW that all is correct, in that LOTW can and did recognise which of the two calls I used, and can and did apply (confirm) the data correctly and, I assume, without any 'bother'. That is, LOTW can differentiate QSO 1 from QSO 2. However, when DX4Win receives a download from LOTW, where both QSOs have been confirmed, it will refuse to acknowledge both QSOs/QSLs. Using the example above, if QSO 2 is confirmed first (before DX4Win has had a chance to confirm QSO 1) it will apply the confirmation to either of the two QSOs, apparently 'thinking' that either QSO qualifies for confirmation. So, at this stage, we have, effectively, data from QSO 2 ex LOTW confirming QSO 1 in DX4WIN. Confusing, isn't it? The problem then, apart from this being strictly incorrect, is that when DX4Win receives the data from LOTW for QSO 1, it will say something like 'QSO not found' in the NOTFOUND report. The bottom line is that I end up with both QSOs confirmed in LOTW, but only one QSO confirmed in DX4Win - unless I manually correct which, of course, is what I do. Now, this never seemed to happen in V7 at all, and because I only do this exercise once a month, I don't know what may have been the situation in V8.01. A second 'issue' that has me confused is that, in the NOT FOUND report generated at the end of the LOTW process, there are a number of QSOs listed that HAVE been confirmed in DX4Win (and LOTW), and all data matches exactly! In the words of Professor Julius Sumner Miller 'Why is this so? I am not complaining, nor do I ask Paul to look at the problem, as I can live with it - DX4Win is an OK program. But I thought it may be of interest to some of our amateur radio computer buffs, who may know what is going on - or if I am missing something horribly obvious. [Dx4win] Importing a ADIF file from MixW into 8.01
Hello all. This may well be an issue for the MixW reflector, but I will ask the question here first. I just imported my first QSO from MixW into V8.01. (Been in VK6 without a radio). The name, QTH and frequency imported perfectly from MixW to the 'correct' boxes. The information in the 'Notes' column from MixW however lobbed up in the 'Notes for this call' box rather than the box I thought may have been the correct one, 'Notes for this QSO'! In V7 the name and QTH information from MixW ended up in the 'Notes for this call' box, and the frequency and other information ended up in the 'Notes for this QSO' box! That is, correct (in my view). I 'thought' this is where it probably belongs (in the 'Notes for this QSO' box) but I will stand corrected!! Is there a 'fix; for this, in either DX4Win or MixW, I wonder? Any views welcome. [Dx4win] Version 8 - my view
Just a couple of comments. Point 1:I managed to transfer frequency information from the 'Notes for this QSO' column of V7 absolutely perfectly, in that all data was neatly and correctly arranged into the frequency column in V8. In every QSO in my log, since moving from a wonderful old program WJ2O, that never made it into the Windows environment, frequency information came first. Then followed other, general, QSO information. Unfortunately, some of this additional information that was also in the 'Notes for this QSO' column was 'scrunched up' (explanation - some additional information was also taken from the 'Notes' column in V7, along with the frequency information, but never made it to anywhere in V8) and, apparently, 'lost' in the transition, which would have made a huge job requirement for me to manually edit what information was left in the 'Notes' to correct (or tidy up) the problem created. I will leave this to a future day, but will probably never update frequency info on my old QSOs, just start from now, as I much prefer to retain my 'Notes' info neatly, correctly and fully. Point 2:Like, it seems, many others, I wrote the contacts name and QTH in the 'Notes for this Call' box in V7, separated by one space. It was neat and effective. But, as we now know, not transferable unless you make so many 'contortional' movements' that you risk losing sight of what you are doing, and if I read the reflector comments correctly, even then it doesn't work 100%, which for me means 'don't do it at all'. I have the information still there in V8, albeit now in the wrong box, but again I will not risk losing, or distorting my hard collected information just for the sake of transferring t5he information - like in point 1 above, I shall start from my next QSO to place name and QTH in the new boxes. For the first time in my life, I think I was smart, in that several of the update features, like the above, I actually tried on a separate computer, with full copies of everything available to me - thus when I did the actual update on my 'live' data, I did not 'mess' anything up! Bottom line - I thought the upgrade from V6 to V7 was a non-event for me, because MMTTY never worked for me anywhere near as well as MixW (and then simply transferring QSO information via ADI file) did, and I like MixW much better anyway, but V8 has some excellent features, and is well worth the few dollars I spent to upgrade. Paul - job well done, and thank you for your efforts. [Dx4win] DX4Win - Wish list
I have been reading the posts with great interest, and was 'happy' to see that the number of groups was going to be increased beyond 256 in the next update. I had been asking for that since 2005, but re-arranged my log only six months ago, believing that there was no likelihood of this change being made. Better late than never, as it will, obviously, help others. My other, very long standing, wish is that the name/address of any call should not automatically be copied to a new QSO in the 'Notes for this Call' box. The sheer number of 'old' calls' re-appearing with new owners makes this information, as it functionally stands, useless as far as accuracy is concerned for a significant, and growing, number of calls. Also, many Dxpeditions now identify the actual operator with which you had the QSO, and it would be nice if you could record this information, accurately, in the 'Notes for this Call' box. (Yes, I know you can record it in the 'Notes for this QSO' box - but that is a, poor, second best, scenario. So, a 'switch' to turn this function 'on/off' would be a good way to suit everyone. Hi everyone. I have a bug somewhere in my label printing set up. When I go to print a label with, say, three QSOs, I cannot always get DX4Win to accomplish the task. As often as not, it will print out one QSO on one label. And, of course, take three labels, and ostensibly three QSL cards, out of the system. Or it will print two QSOs on one label, and one on the next. But not the three QSOs on the same label. Then, at a later time (and having closed DX4Win, and sometimes my computer, down in the meantime) I will try the same exercise again, on the self same QSOs, and all is well; that is, the three QSOs get printed on the same label. This same behaviour occurs over and over, completely randomly, and has done for several years. I have tried many, many combinations of changes to try to overcome the problem, including complete downloads of software, etc etc but to no avail. Is anyone else suffering this problem, or is it only me. I can/do get around the issue, if absolutely necessary, by exporting relevant QSOs out of DX4Win into another program, where I print the label perfectly every time, and life goes on. But, ideally, DX4Win should do this - shouldn't it? Can anyone out there offer advice? Ernie Ernie Walls VK3FM [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[Dx4win] 7.03
I have just started to change from 7.02.to 7.03. I do not upgrade per se - I install 7.03 in parallel with 7.02, copy all relevant files over, make sure everything agrees, save what I want, and delete the rest. As yet, no changeover. But, I have one problem! 7.02 recognises CY0AA as Sable for me, but 7.03 simply will not - the net result is that I show one less country confirmed in 7.03, than I do in 7.02, with exactly the same log in both versions. And yes. I checked that the QSO is actually still in both. Can anyone advise what the problem may be? And a fix. Never ever had an upgrade problem prior to this one. Still using XP, and in no hurry to change. Thanks. Ernie Ernie Walls VK3FM [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[Dx4win] MMTTY
I am one of those hams who has never tried to get MMTTY working with DX4Win - until today. I use MixW for digital operations. But I thought I would try to get MMTTY going, so as to make a comparison of the relative merits of both. (I actually got PSK31 going quite OK). At this stage, I can 'open' MMTTY, and get the terminal window in place, and staying in place, and I can transmit a signal. However, each time I open MMTTY (Window/MMTTY), whilst the terminal window is OK, the parameters window (Control Panel) continually minimises - as soon as MMTTY is opened. So, I click on the program in the Task Bar, it 'maximises' the control panel window; but then every time I click within the terminal window, it minimises again. I simply cannot get it to stay 'maximised'. Can someone please guide me to what, no doubt, is an easy solution to a (probable) silly mistake on my part. Thanks. [Dx4win] Contestia mode
Hello to all - I am looking for some advice/help in the following matter. I had a QSO recently in 'Contestia' mode. I would like to upload this QSO to LOTW - but am unaware if it is a valid mode there, and if it is, what is its mode number so that I may modify the ADIF upload file. (I need to do this as DX4Win does not recognise the mode either, so I have it recorded as a 'non-used' mode). As an aside, is there a file available that gives one these mode numbers that I may acquire for my own future reference? Thanks in advance for any help that may be forthcoming. [Dx4win] DX4Win 701 OLIVIA LOTW upload
I have made a number of OLIVIA contacts, logging them in DX4Win as 'Q15' QSO's. Is there a way to upload these to LOTW as 'OLIVIA' QSO's - perhaps by amending the ADI file in some way prior to converting to TQ8?? I tried (i) removing the error comments in the DX4Win 'Notes for this QSO' box and (ii) changing the mode description (but not the mode number!!) in the ADI file, then converting to TQ8 - but no go. Can anyone offer a 'How to' - or do we have to wait for a DX4Win update. Ernie Walls VK3FM [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[Dx4win] Label Editor problems - DX4Win 7.01
I use Custom Label 1 as my basic label template - but because of the font sizes I choose to use it can only print one QSO per label. No problems. However, I also wanted a label template that would allow 3 QSOs' per label. So, I chose Custom Label 5 for the job. All dimensions are EXACTLY the same for both templates, EXCEPT for the font sizes. My problem By creating Custom Label 5, the font sizes on Custom Label 1 change, to those of Custom Label 5. Or vice versa. In other words, no matter how hard I try, I end up with TWO templates that are EXACTLY the same. If I try and 'force the issue, the label print program throws a wobbly, and I have to replace the entire label print files. Am I doing something wrong, or is there a (known) bug at work? Any assistance would be appreciated. But, and BTW, I think DX4Win is a terrific program. Ernie Walls VK3FM [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Is there any indication when this mode will be included in the DX4Win mode menu? Ernie Walls VK3FM [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]
