Luciano,

If the QSOs are not in your regular log and not in the backup file I’m
afraid the QSOs are lost.

Check the field below the fields for Days. Hours etc.
Change that from: "Add to QSO time" to "Subtract from QSO time"

Deleting the config.dat file may solve the problem already unless you
suspect that a virus modified the exe file.

Re: [Dx4win] Print of group on SWL Card

2023-09-04 Thread Paul van der Eijk
Hi Joe,

The group name is not printed on a SWL label.

The work-around is to modify the text printed on a label; but this text
needs to be
adjusted for every group you want to print. So you will need a filter for
that group.

The text can be changed here: File | Preferences | Rep/Lab
third line of the greeting.

[Dx4win] Windows 11 Issue

2023-05-29 Thread Paul van der Eijk
Hi, I'm wondering if someone can provide some insight!

I have a customer who cannot run dx4win by double-clicking on the
executable. There is no error message etc. dx4win does not produce a bug
report. However, when double clicking a log file in the Save sub-directory
the program starts and loads the log!

He experiences the same problem on a second computer alos running Windows
11.

His virus checker has been disabled.

Any ideas, suggestions?

Re: [Dx4win] Two log books simultaneously?

2023-03-11 Thread Paul van der Eijk
Hi Brad,

I suggest using Group Numbers and Selections for this.

Set Group number for QSOs in your N9EN log to 1
Set Group number for QSOs in your W4A log to 2
Merge W4A log into N9EN
Give the group numbers names
Define a Selection for N9EN QSOs
Define a Selection for W4A QSOs
(Check the Group number box)

Doing so will show all QSOs by default but activating
a Selection can limit the QSOs used for reports etc to a single group
The Same Call Window will show the Group name(s) for a callsign

--Paul

PS Writing this took longer than actually doing these steps!

that for existing QSOs . Or do both if some QSOs were recovered already.

For those of you who offered suggestions, thank you. Unfortunately there
were no new ideas that I haven't tried. What I would like to have is a
detailed list of settings for the File/Preferences/Radio fields and the
File/Databases/Radios General|Values|Cmds/Fields|Test. When the Test/Read
is pushed he main freq,QSX freq and mode at the bottom of the Test /read
the radio correctly but the program freq and mode are wrong.I have tried
all three K3 files, (k3, K3 X4 and X5) without success. I have tried the
program on two different computers without success. Somebody must have a
successful configuration. I'd really appreciate a copy

Bud,

Your country file was removed by a virus checker;

You likely have an older copy in your Backups sub-directory.
Copy the file country.dat to the Save sub-directory.

Tell the virus checker to ignore the DX4WIN directory

Start DX4WIN

Do Help | Check for Updates to get the latest files.

[Dx4win] Winkeyer stopped connection

2021-11-29 Thread Paul van der Eijk
Sending this request for help from Tom, W8TK
I have no idea what could be doing this.
--Paul, KK4HD

I have been a DX4Win user for many years and it has always worked great.
Until yesterday when CW Keyboard window displayed "Winkey not responding".
I tried everything to get it working: new cable, different COM port, many
cold re-boots, even a different WinKeyer. The program seems to find the
Winkeyer port because instead of saying "DX4Win can't open COM2", the error
message appears only in the CW keyboard window. Indeed I can't send
memories or change speed now.

Task manager reports no other applications running. This is Windows 7
Pro. Winkeyer works as always with N1MM Logger with same keyer and COM
port.

I have 30,000 QSO in the program and I operate only CW. I hope you can
help.

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN Will Not Start After Update Today

2021-11-28 Thread Paul van der Eijk
Bud,

The bug report may give a clue.

Also check if country.dat is in your save directory. For whatever reason
virus checkers often remove that file.

When the file is missing, you should have a copy in the highest numbered
directory in the backups directory.

If this scenario applies, tell the virus checker to ignore the dx4win
directory.

[Dx4win] Garbage on last line in county report

2021-08-24 Thread Paul van der Eijk
Received the problem log from W3LL

I was able to clean the log as follows:

1. Open W3LL.DXL
2. File Import/Export
3. Select DX4WIN V9 and later
3. File | Export to TEST
4. QSO | Multiple QSO Operations
5. Delete QSOs
This step executes pretty slow, but preserves the Selections stored in the
log
6. File Import/Export
7. Select DX4WIN V9 and later
8. File | Import from TEST
Reports 13 import errors
9. File | Save As somefilename

The county report has no longer garbage on the last line.

In the original file, an F8 search with State=!* and County=* finds a number
of QSOs. This is no longer the case in the cleansed file.

Re: [Dx4win] FAILURE OF MY PROGRAM

2021-08-10 Thread Paul van der Eijk
Alan,

That backup approach will work but creates a potential problem. DX4WIN will
remember the last log saved which is now on a USB stick. If you reopen your
log in your regular directory the problem goes away.

Re: [Dx4win] County Report State After WY

2021-05-31 Thread Paul van der Eijk
Bud,

Open the logbook window
select report
pick a report that will show the state field
sort by state

You should be able to the suspicious state in that sorted list;
most likely it is DC

(a previous version allowed DC to be imported as a valid state;
most likely produced by a contest program)

Re: [Dx4win] Importing different FT8 logs

2021-04-05 Thread Paul van der Eijk
Radi,

Set a filter that matches the QSOs you want to change.

QSO Window | QSO | Multiple QSOs Operations | Set Group Number

Always keep a safe copy of your log before making such changes.

Re: [Dx4win] QSO time issues when importing

2020-06-15 Thread Paul van der Eijk
Dave,

When you have the QSO start-time in an ADIF record Dx4win will use that
time. If that field is missing, it will use the end-time. So I’m guessing
some ADIF producer is changing the values of those fields or does not
export the start-time.
That should be easy to verify.

Glyn,

In File | Preferences | QSO
Select "Exact" in the QSO Date field.

When you filter for a date, using F8, only the date specified in the QSO

will match the filter.

[Dx4win] DX4WIN

2020-04-16 Thread Paul van der Eijk
Hi,

Having read most, most likely all, messages I want to share some of my
thoughts.

1. Automatic uploads, possibly one QSO at a time, is not in my plans. My
main reason is that I expect that it requires more support than I'm willing
to provide. If something goes wrong, they call or write me while it may
have nothing to do with DX4WIN. Think about issues with certificate
changes, server not responsive etc. I simply do not have the time or
desire to add this to my support load. Using an ADIF file is a nice
separation between DX4WIN and other applications processing such file.

Note that I get plenty of emails regarding lost or misplaced license files
etc.
A number of users do not like to use the reflector for a support question,
so
I field those.

2. Interfacing with other applications UDP
Have to admit, that so far I have not found out how to do this. I would
like to
support such an interface.

Jim, AD1C, provides great support maintaining the country database, the
custom awards etc etc. He also helps users that ask him for help. I also
want to recognize the users of the reflector who are willing to put in
their
time to help other users.

I think some of you have the wrong idea about the company behind
DX4WIN. It is literally a one-man show. I'm retired and I'm glad to have a
reasonable retirement income. Income from DX4WIN is nice but it does
not feed the family!

Stay Safe

Re: [Dx4win] Groups Vaporized

2020-03-22 Thread Paul van der Eijk
Jim,

If I understand you correctly, you have two logs. ONE with the group names
but not the latest QSOs, and number TWO without group names with the latest
QSOs.

In this case:
Open log ONE
Delete all QSOs (QSO | Multiple QSO operations)
Merge log TWO (File | Import | Merge DX4WIN log)

File | Save As using a different name just to make sure,

--Paul, KK4HD

PS I have no idea how this can happen, except for importing a log into a
new log that did not have any groups defined.

Mark,

On my system (Windows 10) there will be a small icon on the left side of
the screen just above
the taskbar; click on that icon and select "Restore"

Shelby,

Do you by chance have a second log where those QSOs could be hiding?

I have yet to see a case where QSOs disappeared for ever.

Bill,

Did you find the on-line help for this?
(you can search for notfound and there should be an entry)

For matching time and date, we use a time window;
see File | Preferences | Import

Hope this helps,

Re: [Dx4win] ADIF QSO Notes

2020-02-20 Thread Paul van der Eijk
Hi Dmitry,

Please note that what I guess were screen shots were not shown in the
received email.

The extra information is imported by DX4WIN because it was there! In the
passed,
users have mixed feelings about the frequency field; what is the value of
that information
after a few years? But I decided it should be included in the QSO window.

I do not know how you filter the frequency for example, but it would be
simple to
change CAS
It looks like a contest specific exchange.

Re: [Dx4win] Dupes in my log

2020-02-19 Thread Paul van der Eijk
Ray,

Make sure you have the latest version (9.09); if not, do Help | Check for
Updates

You may want keep a backup of your log before doing the following:

QSO Window: QSO | Multiple QSO Operations | Mark Duplicate QSOs

--Paul

From the Help:

Multiple QSO operations: Mark Duplicates

Check all QSOs matching the current Selection and filter for duplicate
entries.

When a QSO is found to be a duplicate, comparing callsign date, time, mode,
a note will be added to the Notes for the QSO. If the QSO has any award
setting, the note will be DUPE_QSO_AWD, if there are no award settings but
the QSO is confirmed (qsl_card, LoTW or eQSL), the note will be
DUPE_QSO_CONF. In all other cases DUPE_QSO will be added to the note.

All messages added can be removed again from the Notes using the option:
Multiple QSO operations: Remove Dupe QSO messages

Re: [Dx4win] Submission Report Only Empty

2020-01-03 Thread Paul van der Eijk
Jim,

Do a submission and save your log using a temporary name.

Open that new log (should not make a difference; just to make sure)

Do submission again but check the box to see existing submissions.

A submission report will not show entries that have been "Checked";
does that explain what you observe?

Re: [Dx4win] Help!

2019-12-31 Thread Paul van der Eijk
Dennis,

Do not install Dx4win in the program files directory; that directory is
treated differently and does not work well for DX4WIN and many other
programs.

Download the installer from the website and run it; by default is goes into
the root directory of the C Drive.

Copy your license file to the new directory.

Copy your files from the old Save directory to the new Save directory.

Start the program

Do Help | Check for Updates to get the latest files

There is no option to generate a report like that.

What I do is to export the logs to a file using the DX4WIN9 filter
and use a text file "differ" to find the differences.

Not sure what you expected when specifying a time in a filter.

The current implementation uses a window of 8 minutes around the time you
specify.
See Help: Filter: Details for various fields

[Dx4win] DX4WIN 9.08 released

2019-12-01 Thread Paul van der Eijk
When checking for updates (Help | Check for Updates) you will find there is
a new DX4WIN version available.

This is from the change log (this is also in the help file)

Version 9.08

Changed membership test in filter; see searching Membership .

When using an ADIF file to confirm QSOs, new data that replaces empty data
is no longer reported

When importing a QSO with Mode=SSB, a submode (USB or LSB) will be ignored
to avoid conflicts with other software

When using a CSV file to confirm IOTA awards, matching QSOs will no longer
be flagged as confirmed; only the IOTA mixed award status is set to
Checked. (Captions and screen captures have been modified to reflect this
change)

Corrected Import/Export method for OQRSd and OQRSb

When using an external data source to update a QSO, the modifications could
be lost when changing the focus back to the QSO Window; this has been fixed.

Removed the checkbox Submission report only in Award generator; it did not
work as expected.

Write award information to ADIF during export.

Recognizing a duplicate QSO during an import did not work for a time
tolerance of zero seconds; this resulted in creating duplicate QSOs in the
log.

To eliminate duplicate QSOs in your log:

1.Create a new log

2.Enter a dummy QSO (use your own call for example)

3.File | Import | File | Merge DX4WIN log

4.Select your own log

5.Select to Ignore Duplicate QSOs

6.After import, delete the dummy QSO

Re: [Dx4win] Disaster

2019-10-31 Thread Paul van der Eijk
Carol,

Not sure how you can loose all your QSOs when importing a log. The only way
to do this, as far as I know, is to start a new log using the same name as
your regular log.

DX4WIN keeps various backup copies of your log; see on-line help in the
section “files”

Re: [Dx4win] Sub Mode Breaking LOTW Confirmations?

Ignoring the sub modes for SSB should be easy to fix. Don’t think I should
do this for the other modes.

Re: [Dx4win] Packet Window gone...

2019-10-26 Thread Paul van der Eijk
Luis,

If the laptop has a smaller screen than the main computer, that window may
be off
the screen.

To get around this, save the configuration as a text file,
(File | Preferences | File | Write configuration file)

Use Notepad to edit this file

Near the end of the file, look for [W-SPOT] and set the
values for LEFT=0 and TOP=0

Save the file and use it to load the configuration from a text file
(File | Preferences | File | Load configuration file)

The packet window should be visible now

Re: [Dx4win] IMPORT errors

2019-10-10 Thread Paul van der Eijk
Alan,

I think the U and C flags are documented in the on-line help (F1 key in the
not-found window)

Note that the current approach (Since version 9.05 I think) is to modify
the QSO but
put the old value in the notes for the QSO.so the change can be made
visible.
The question is if the old value was empty if this should be noted by
indicating State= (State was empty)

[Dx4win] DX4WIN Update version 9.0.7.1230

2019-10-06 Thread Paul van der Eijk
When you do Help | Check for Updates, you will find that a new version is
available.This version fixes two bugs:

Version 9.07 ·

When importing QSOs the wrong IOTA was used to find a unique island group
if the group was empty.

When certain fields, like grid, IOTA etc, where not specified in a QSO, the
coordinates used for direction and distance were incorrect.

Re: [Dx4win] 9.0.5 Not ignoring dupes during WSJT-x import

2019-06-27 Thread Paul van der Eijk
I think changing the mode/submode of the old FT4 QSOs will avoid this. When
matching QSOs for import
the sub-mode is now looked at too. See Multiple QSO Operations | Change
mode/sub-mode; use this after
setting a filter!

[Dx4win] Version 9.06 available

2019-06-27 Thread Paul van der Eijk
Made a new version available: do Help | Check for Updates

The 'funny' problem of files not recognized as being identical is still
there; so do not keep downloading islands.txt and clusters.dat; most likely
not changed.

These are the changes:

Version 9.06

·When importing QSOs to confirm existing QSOs, we check that if the
information contained in the imported QSOs adds to the existing QSO or
conflicts with the existing QSOs. Conflicts are now indicated in the
"notfound" listing with a letter C in the first column, Updates with the
letter U and QSOs that could not be found with the letter X.

·Identical messages are only stored once for each QSO to avoid multiple
entries of the same message.

·When using the Update button in the External data Window updates were lost
if the cursor was inside the callsign field. This is now avoided by moving
the cursor to the prefix field before applying any updates.

·If the grid field in the External Data Window contains more characters
than the grid field in the QSO, and the first characters match, the grid
information in the QSO Window will be updated.

·While adding calls to a membership list, skip empty calls. In QSO Window,
avoid using an empty call to fill the membership field.

[Dx4win] F8 search bug

2019-06-26 Thread Paul van der Eijk
I think I squashed the F8 search bug thanks to Rick, K0XB.

When creating a membership list, I did not filter an empty line which
created
an entry for an empty callsign. When starting a filter, the callsign field
is cleared but the membership field was initialized using the empty
callsign (the @ in both cases)

The search failed unless you searched for a callsign in that @ list!

So the quick solution is to recreate your list but watch out for empty
lines.

My new code guards against this happening in the future.

Thank you for your patience,

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN /WIINKEY-USB 9.03 and 9.05 problems fixed

2019-06-22 Thread Paul van der Eijk
Dave,

So glad Winkey works for you now.

However, I want to get two misconceptions out of the way:

1. When DX4WIN starts, there is an internal checksum calculation to see
that the executable has not been changed. If it has been changed or
downloaded
incorrectly, you will see a message saying that the executable is corrupt;
clicking Ok
will terminate the program.

2. DX4WIN communicates with Winkey using ASCI text, not dots and dashes.
So reversing dots and dashes happened after the text is sent to the keyer.

I thank Steve, K1EL, for helping me figure out the change to initialization
sequence for Winkey so it is compatible with old and new firmware.

Re: [Dx4win] Version 9.05 available - possible bug

2019-06-17 Thread Paul van der Eijk
Rick,

the previous exectable, dx4win.exe, is saved in one of the backup
directories.

I have no idea why an F8 search would behave like this.

[Dx4win] Version 9.05 available

2019-06-16 Thread Paul van der Eijk
When doing Help | Check for Updates you will find a new version for the
executable and other files.

This is the change log:

When editing a QSO, do not reset county if state changed and county is
still valid

Error message when country database cannot be found

Added more satellites

Made Winkey interface compatible with newer versions

Redid IOTA checking; changes made are applied to the QSO. Values that were
replaced are shown in the QSO Notes

Added MFSK sub-modes FT4 and JS8

During import, check for a valid island code

Multiple QSO operations will now remove multiple import messages

Custom award check did not mark QSO as changed when award was changed;
Report the count of the number of awards that changed

Changed time tolerance test so a window of 2 seconds allows QSOs 2 seconds
apart

Message when secondary backup directory is not named correctly

Catch F1 in GroupNr field if no groups have been defined

Fixed reading of some old logs

Added membership field to QSO window and Logbook window

Made form for selecting a report larger

If there is no prefix for a callsign, using F1 in the State field could
pick from the wrong list

Fixed bug with double-click in WPX report

Test for RST field in filter was broken

Use callsign and suffix data for direction / distance calculation

Ignore text after left parenthesis for QSL manager search

Include sub-mode for dupe checking during import

Show mode / sub-mode in SameCall window

Menus are enabled again when selecting a skin

[Dx4win] User trying to subscribe

2018-11-03 Thread Paul van der Eijk
Hi,

It looks impossible for a user to subscribe to the reflector and I'm
running out of ideas
what to do. Has anyone had this problem and knows a work-around? As far as
I can tell there is something special with his email address and I have a
vague recollection something like this happened previously.

Grasping for ideas,

Re: [Dx4win] Prefix search

2018-09-15 Thread Paul van der Eijk
Roger,

Searching in the callsign field does not work for all QSOs.

You will not find the QSO for a call like W1YY/7 the prefix is W7 for that
one.

There is an easier way to do this:

QSO Window | Reports
Select WPX, Listing, All modes, All bands and click OK

In the listing shown you can double-click on a band or mode and all
matching QSOs
will be selected. They can be shown as a list in the LogBook window.

Re: [Dx4win] Error message

2018-07-21 Thread Paul Van Der Eijk
Close the program and check that the file save\country.dat is present. I have
seen multiple reports of this file disappearing. I speculate that this is due
to an overzealous virus checker. You likely have a backup copy in the backup
sub-directory.
Also check if you use a secondary backup that is on a network drive or USB
stick. These connections often go away and come back again.

Re: [Dx4win] Importing Logs from the FQP using N1MM+ Ver 1.0.7161.0

2018-05-01 Thread Paul van der Eijk
When you want to import closely spaced QSOs, in your example separated
by 2 seconds, set the import time window to 1 second:
File | Preferences | Import | Time window to match QSO in secs (my logs)

Guess I could change the interpretation of the time window to allow QSOs
that are within the time window including the limit.

Re: [Dx4win] Help printing: Trouble printing

2018-04-10 Thread Paul van der Eijk
Eric,

Just to make sure: You cannot modify a lebel definition directly. You will
have to copy an existinf
definition to one of the four custom labels. After modifying the label,
don't forget to save and
use it for printing later. The preview should save some paper!

Eric,

Most likely a virus checker is doing something to your license file.

Assuming you have a backup copy of your license file, replace the
one in your DX4WIN directory, but if a virus checker is playing games
that may not help you. You will have to tell the virus checker that the
DX4WIN directory can be trusted.

After a long search for my power supply for my XP laptop I can confirm what

It may be related to the fact that I disabled the skinning of menus.
Fortunately for

Re: [Dx4win] B8.05 ADIF problem

2018-01-03 Thread Paul van der Eijk
Hi Arne,

For an ADIF export, the program checks if we write using a filter called
"ADIF"; when that is the case,
we use a table inside the country database to map from our internal country
number to the DXCC
number used for ADIF. When you see something different coming out I suspect
that the list of
import/export filters is broken or the country database is damaged.

Btw, I did a quick test, and it works here as expected.

Re: [Dx4win] Antenna Bearing Issue

It is actually more convoluted than that:

In all steps, we use the info only when it is know (not empty)

1. Grid 6 characters
2. IOTA
3. US County
4. Grid 4 characters
5. US State
6. Country

The country database has for DX0P to be Spratly from 2015/04/17 to

This using the 9.03 country database; does your QSO have a date in this

When you update the program it is listed as "Import Export filters"

[Dx4win] Update 9.03

2017-11-15 Thread Paul van der Eijk
When you do a Help | Check for Updates you will find that version 903 is
available.

The last two days I have been chasing the F8 problem. I hope I fixed it
because during normal testing it works for me. At least one problem I found
was that using "Search using previous filter" did not show the previously
selected mode group. So a double-click in the country window should show
the mode group.

Jim also provided a few updated files.

Theo,

F8 is supposed to work as in older versions.

Using Alt-F8 you can specify a mode group; to search for any digital mode
for example you can specify DIG for the mode.

Re: [Dx4win] F8 Lookup Specific QSO by Callsign

2017-11-13 Thread Paul van der Eijk
John,

What is your setting for callsign matching in the preferences?
(File | Preferences | QSO | Callsign)

For the SameCall window the Substring option selects a different search
algorithm.
The other options extract the main call by deleting prefix and suffix and
matches that with
the call in the log. (The F1 help has a few details on this)

The LogBook window uses the same algorithm as searching in the QSO window
and will
show the matches only.

If you have a counter example for this, or steps to reproduce, I would love
to see it.

Re: [Dx4win] F8 Lookup Specific QSO by Callsign

When you press F8, all fields in the QSO Window should be blank.
When you enter a call to search you follow that by pressing Enter.

Re: [Dx4win] license key

2017-10-31 Thread Paul Van Der Eijk

day the order was placed and yesterday.
I will mail again; just the license file; maybe your provider does not like a
zip attachment. —Paul

QSO entered
