Because no one reported any problems to me, I assumed that no one was using the Updater program. So the big question is why did I release an update to a program that no one uses? For those who may not know, I update the following four data files for DX4WIN 9.x each Saturday morning (local time). Note that they won't be available as DX4WIN 9.x updates until Paul changes them on the DX4WIN server: - Calendar - Master Callsigns - Membership List - DX Cluster nodes I use this same Updater program (in a special mode) to generate these weekly updates. I plan to enhance the OQRS (on-line QSL request service) listing in the membership list. However, in the process of starting to do that, I discovered some unreleased updates. I thought it would be better to release those updates, then work on the enhancements from a clean base. I don't know when the OQRS enhancements will appear, but it definitely won't be in time for this weekend's updates. I'll send an update after I have made the changes. > I could not find the fulllist.xml file but do not know where to look. > Maybe you will have better luck. > Just curious, where does ver 9.xx get its' IOTA listing? There is a file called "islands.txt" in the SAVE directory. It looks like it was extracted from the fulllist.xml file. There is a JSON-format file with the IOTA data in it, but I have not looked at it yet, and I'll bet Paul has not either. At some point if the IOTA program adds or removes islands or groups, we'll need to deal with that. I'm guessing that with enough work, the JSON file could be written out as XML, but I don't look forward to having to do that. I'm 99.44% sure Paul will not update DX4WIN 8.0x if that comes to pass. - Jim -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , http://www.ad1c.us __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Only a few people have reported seeing it: UPDATE\dx4win.php is not a JSON file It means exactly what it says it means. Because it happened to me today, I was able to diagnose the problem. It's a long-ish story, but the executive summary is: 1. The Updater is doing exactly what it's supposed to do. 2. If you saw this error, you will not see it again. Leo, IZ5FSA maintains the 425 DX News calendar: http://www.425dxn.org/index.php?op=wcal He makes a version of this calendar available that can be used by DX4WIN. In the past, the calendar he provided was text-based. It looked something like this: 13/02/2016 00:00:00,21/02/2016 23:59:59,V31YN: Belize 13/02/2016 00:00:00,23/02/2016 23:59:59,5V7TH: Togo 13/02/2016 00:00:00,24/02/2016 23:59:59,XW4XR: Laos After the Updater downloaded the calendar, the user had to manually import it into DX4WIN. I believe the name was something like calendar.txt. Somewhere along the line, the name of the downloaded file became dx4win.php, but it was still in text format. Remember this for later. In early 2016, Leo began offering the calendar in JSON format. It was first used by version 8.01 of the DX4WIN Data Updater: "JSON, or JavaScript Object Notation, is a minimal, readable format for structuring data. It is used primarily to transmit data between a server and web application, as an alternative to XML." The calendar in JSON format was downloaded into a file called calendar.php, which was used by the DX4WIN Data Updater to update the calendar inside DX4WIN. The user no longer had to import it into DX4WIN by hand. Recently, Leo moved the calendar from his personal web server to the 425 DX News web server. In this process of this change, the name of the file that the Updater downloaded changed again, this time (back) to dx4win.php. This also resulted in the release of version 9.4 of the DX4WIN Data Updater. Here is where the problem occurs. People who used an earlier version of the DX4WIN Data Updater downloaded a text version of the calendar into a file named dx4win.php, which is stored in the UPDATE directory. Today, the Updater is downloading a file with this same name, but in JSON format, to a temporary directory. The Updater compares the old and new calendars to see if they are different. It compares the newly-downloaded calendar from the temporary directory, with the previous one that is in the UPDATE directory. If you were using an old version of the updater, you may have an old dx4win.php file in text format. So the Updater is trying to compare the new JSON-format calendar with the old TEXT-format calendar. This cause the pop-up error message. When the error occurs, the Updater decides the old calendar in the UPDATE directory is no good, and replaces it with the one it just downloaded. So the error will not occur again. Sorry for the inconvenience. At least I understand the problem now, and know that it is *not* with the 425 DX News website or the Updater. 73 - Jim AD1C -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , http://www.ad1c.us __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN Data Updater v. 9.1 released
I found the problem with the DX4WIN Data Updater. This problem is in both version 9.0 and 9.1 The symptom is this: 1. The Updater prompts you to update the program. 2. You answer YES. 3. The main Updater screen appears, at which point you probably Update (what you do here does not matter) 4. The next time you run the Update program, the program is no longer there There are two ways to avoid the problem: 1. When the Updater prompts you to update itself, answer NO (each time). Keep using the old version. 2. Install 9.1 as a new installation, over-top of 9.0. You'll get the new version, and it *should not* ask you to update. The software fix is embarrassingly simple. I was checking the status of moving the current Updater program to a backup name, but I checked the status wrong. I was checking for non-zero meaning failure, but instead should have checked for zero to mean failure. It is a one-character fix in the software! I should have tested this. I was sure I had, but obviously I missed something. I will try to release version 9.2 on Feb 15 (UTC) to fix this problem. You'll have to do a re-install of this version, then the problem should be gone. 73 - Jim AD1C On Tue, Feb 14, 2017 at 9:02 AM, Jim Reisert AD1C wrote: > There is something wrong with the update process. Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN Data Updater v. 9.1 released
There is something wrong with the update process. It prompts you to update, but it's not downloading. This causes you to get in an update loop. Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN Data Updater re-write and feature request
Many many moons ago there was a side instruction on how to save your current QSL Manager list and addresses so that the updater would not overwrite them (well, it does overwrite them but you had an option to save them in a separate file). I did save these in a separate folder in case I needed to go back to whom I first sent a QSL to. I am still doing that but am not sure if I am doing it the most efficient and quickest way. The main reason is to reduce the program (file) size from approx 5MB to something under 300KB (about 6% of the original size), as well as making it easier to debug. I'll be cleaning up a lot of the code, and removing some features that I never finished or that never worked right. I'll change it so that a failed download (like eQSL) won't stop the update process to wait for user input before it can continue. Plus, I can use a free compiler to build the program. Is anyone using any of the following features in the Updater? If not, then I will not implement them in the new version. http://dx4win.ad1c.us/updater/index.html#options –prompt : ask before updating each file –auto : run Updater Program without graphical interface keep-alive functionality. I have never thought this worked very well, the VE7CC user program does a much better job of this. I'm considering adding the options described at the URL above as some sort of configuration menu that you can access from within the program, but that's a low-priority item right now. Getting the existing functionality working again is most important. Here is a screenshot of what the new Updater may look like, subject to change, of course. http://dx4win.ad1c.us/new_updater.png I may have trouble supporting Windows XP, but Windows Vista and later should be fine. If this is a deal-breaker for you, let me know. If there are new features you want, please let me know and I'll try to implement them. One new feature I want to add is a "Reset" button that removes all the downloaded files from the UPDATE directory. This will force the Updater to download all the latest files if things get out-of-sync. Support for ARRL National Parks on the Air (NPOTA) will be left in for the time being, but be disabled. The framework I created (i.e. sub-menus for Calendar and Membership Lists) is useful for adding similar features. Jim -> –auto : run Updater Program without graphical interface I have the DX4WIN Data Updater (shortcut) with -auto at my Start folder in Windows. I would like to have the -auto feature in the future, because I forget to run the Data Updater regularly. I can live without the -auto feature, but it help me a lot to update DX4WIN, so I always have the latest version from the Data Updater. Hi Jim,You are adding more work for you that I think is not so necessary. The Updater as it is now works FB and I am not using any options. I think it is the case of most of us. I had a problem only once, having to delete downloaded files to fix it. But, if you are aiming at the perfection, let it be :) ! As a follow-up to this, today I experienced the same problem. The eQSL.cc site was returning an error code of 500 when trying to download the list of Authenticity Guaranteed users. So I disabled my Internet interface (pulled out the cable) and tried the Updater again. I got the same error code of 500! Thus, when a website returns an error code of 500, there is no way for the Updater to distinguish whether the Internet connection or the web site itself is the source of the problem. It may be possible for me to add extra code to indicate whether any previous files were downloaded successfully, and if so, make the 500 error non-fatal, i.e. your Internet connection is probably fine. But what should it do if your network connection drops out in the middle of a DX4WIN update? You'll get the "non-fatal" 500 error for each subsequent download. I'll think about this, but will have to do it in a way that doesn't break anything. 73 - Jim AD1C -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , http://www.ad1c.us __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Hi Folks, I've been out of town for the last week. I ran the DX4WIN Data Updater this morning on two computers and the problem seems to have fixed itself. I looked at the program code that is reporting: Unable to connect to Internet. Please check your Windows firewall. I think the Updater may have been too aggressive in assuming that any server error indicates a firewall problem. I'll see if I can create a test case for the problem, because the original problem is gone. Once I can do that, I'll tighten things up so that these kinds of temporary problems don't block the Updater from updating other files. 73 - Jim AD1C p.s. for my reference: http://search.cpan.org/~rse/lcwa-1.0.0/lib/lwp/lib/HTTP/Status.pm -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , http://www.ad1c.us __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Once I can do that, I'll tighten things up so that these kinds of temporary problems don't block the Updater from updating other files. 73 - Jim AD1C p.s. for my reference: http://search.cpan.org/~rse/lcwa-1.0.0/lib/lwp/lib/HTTP/Status.pm -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , http://www.ad1c.us __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

You must also disable NPOTA from the Membership list if it's selected there (see the Updater web page for instructions how to do this). Then remember to enable it the next time you update. The release notes can be found at: http://dx4win.ad1c.us/updater/index.html#history 7.10 - 11 July 2015 Feature: now can update DX4WIN.WPX This is a minor feature release, thus the version number jumped from 7.03 to 7.10 (a bug fix-only release would have jumped fom 7.03 to 7.04). I have not been strictly following this numbering convention, but I intend to in the future. I had to modify the layout slightly to fit in the WPX check box. The web site still shows the old layout. I am not making a separate announcement, but the DX4WIN.WPX file has been updated to the current list as of 7 July 2015. Only prefixes that have been used in the last 10 years count towards the CQ WPX Honor Roll. This file helps identify those prefixes. Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN Data Updater v. 7.01 released
Hello Dennis - Your attachment didn't come through the reflector. Perhaps the program was never installed properly? There are three files: dx4wupd.exe dx4wupd.ini dx4wupd.rc Do a search for dx4wupd.* Windows Button; type in the box that says /Search programs and files /and see what you get. Mine didn't find anything on the first search, so I had to tell it to search again in Computer (WTF?!? Ohthis is Windozenever mind) and it finally found them. Just delete them and install the new version. Maybe reboot after deleting and before installing. Make sure you install the new version in the same directory as the main DX4WIN program. I made a separate directory called Radio_Programs (catchy title, eh what?) and keep everything in there: C:\Radio_Programs\dx4w805 C:\Radio_Programs\N1MM Logger+ etc... Jim - please correct me if I told him anything wrong! Thanks Larry, I didn't know the reflector wouldn't except the short snipping clip... But, that's OK, I realized after I sent the last email that I had never installed V6.04 and was still clicking on the V6.02 icon to execute updater; no wonder I was always getting those execution errors after the updater did the updates Anyway, after I installed V6.04 I uninstalled it and deleted the icon I was clicking on and installed the new V7.01 All ran just fine! Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN Data Updater issues
Thanks for everyone's responses. I'm glad the problem(s) seem to be isolated to only a few users. I've added two fixes to catch the two errors that I have been able to diagnose. Both errors resulted in the program doing nothing when it is run. I've also one new feature, to be announced when program is ready. I'm still waiting for one person to get back to me. He starts the Updater but nothing happens at all. We've been working on-and-off for several days trying to determine the problem. 73 - Jim AD1C -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , http://www.ad1c.us __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Hi Jim,I have Updater v. 6.09 installed on my Win7/32 PC and it runs perfectly when DX4WIN is closed. The usual symptom is that the updater seems to install fine, but when trying to run it, nothing happens. I have been unable to duplicate this problem on three computers that I use regularly. Based on the info one person sent me, an error can occur when checking to see if DX4WIN is already running, at least on a Windows Vista system. This happens if a certain DLL is missing. I do not know if the same problem is affecting everyone, as at least one person is running Windows 7. I have created a test version of the updater and am waiting for some feedback to see if the problem is fixed. This may not be the only problem, however. The new DX4WIN Data Updater (6.0x) is not supposed to show any console window when it starts. I forgot a command-line switch when I compiled it. This will be fixed in the next test release. Most of the information is harvested from various sources on the web, including DX cluster spots. Much of this collection is automatic, though some is not. The data are all merged together and run through several of checking to make sure busted calls/managers don't make it into the list. It even finds things like "V52UUU via DL7FD" (which is really "V52UUO via DL7DF"). The managers I have the hardest time with are when a DX station stops (or starts) using a manager, or when the manager has changed and the station hasn't been active recently. My QSL manager software has been in development since January 2004, and I'm still working to improve it. Today I noticed a case when a certain European on ROS Mode spots the stations he works, putting "via " into the comment field. This causes my program to think the stations he works are being managed by , but he really means, send ME a QSL via . This created about a half-dozen errors (out of over 50K good records), but most of them were recent, so finding them was not quite a needle in a haystack. I now notice this case and ignore the spots. It took less than a dozen lines of code, and some sanity checking to make sure I didn't break anything else. Please send all corrections to me, and I will get them done. 73 - Jim AD1C -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , http://www.ad1c.us __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN Data Updater
I was honored to sit at the Banquet table with Jim at the last INTL DX Convention at Visalia and happy to see he was recognized by all present for all his hard work. I have my F3 lookup window linked to QRZ.COM and the GOLIST. (GOLIST data appears in the F3 window, I get a QRZ.COM lookup by clicking on the callsign in F3) so if I am sending a QSL I double check what is in the QSL MGR window against that info and if it is different I change what is in the QSL MGR window so I guess it doesn't really matter. But whatever changes/additions I make are added to Jim's list when I do this. It's just if I changed someone's address for some reason I have it saved in my own address file. I did do the merge using instructions from the old stand alone CTY update page but in the future I won't. One thing I noticed was before my merge the first address listed was for a call starting a 2-something, after my merge my added address for 1A0C was now at the top so I did make some additions to Jim's list. During the merge procedure there was a window that told me about dupes and additions but I didn't write down the numbers. But in the future I won't bother merging my own stuff with Jim's list. As Dan pointed out Jim's list is highly accurate so needs no additions. Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN Data Updater - small bug
I've made a test version available (4.5a) to fix the DST problem. Unfortunately, the only way to test it is to replace the current version (4.4). I have tested it by resetting my PC to various dates (in my own time zone) and it seems to work OK. I also tested it in the "Casablanca" (UTC, no DST) time zone. Could the people who had problems please try this new version out? Simply run your current updater. It will ask if you want stop and update dx4wupd.exe. Answer Y (yes). Let the update download. When prompted, exit the updater and copy DX4WUPD.EXE from your UPDATE directory to your DX4W### directory, over-writing the existing file (remember, the updater can't do this automatically). When you run the updater again, the banner should say: DX4WIN Data Updater - Version 4.5a Jim Reisert, AD1C - 06 December 2011 23:51:23 You should not get any prompts to download the updater (or anything else). Try setting your PC to a date that is in a different daylight savings time configuration than you are now currently in (this probably varies by hemisphere), for example, July 6 in the USA (make sure to "Apply" the change). Or you can change the "Automatically adjust clock for daylight saving changes" setting in Date and Time Properties, Time Zone tab. The real test is when your time zone changes from DST to non-DST or vice-versa, assuming the program was last updated *before* the change. At the very least, we'll know by April (?) in the USA whether my fix worked or not. 73 - Jim AD1C p.s. This is a Windows issue. The fix itself wasn't that hard; the hard part was finding a different Perl module/function to use for checking the time when a file was modified. Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN Data Updater - small bug
Sorry for all the replies. Actually, I *was* right the first time, this is a real problem. Wayne WA1PMA confirmed it. I can duplicate the problem by going into my Windows "Date and Time Properties", on the Time Zone tab, and checking/unchecking the "Automatically adjust clock for daylight saving changes" check box (then trying to update again). That's actually good news, because it gives me an easy way to replicate and debug the problem. I do not have an estimate of when this will be resolved. 73 - Jim AD1C On Tue, Dec 6, 2011 at 10:48 AM, Jim Reisert AD1C wrote: > I may have misspoke - the version of DX4WUPD.EXE was out-of-date, and > I forgot to copy it from the UPDATE directory (I can't even follow my > own instructions). Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN Data Updater - small bug
I may have misspoke - the version of DX4WUPD.EXE was out-of-date, and I forgot to copy it from the UPDATE directory (I can't even follow my own instructions). But I thought I saw the same problem last night at home, but I could have been using an un-released version for testing. Why do I always leave something out? You still have to import the calendar after the importer downloads it. One thing to remember: after downloading the new version (through the updater), you STILL must manually copy the program from the UPDATE directory to your DX4W### directory, before running the new version. There is no way for the updater program to do itself this while it is running (i.e. it can't over-write itself). -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , http://www.ad1c.us __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN Data Updater version 3.0 released!
Another bug I just found: If you do something like this: dx4wupd -cty -prompt meaning "just update the country file, but always prompt me before doing it', it will actually prompt you to update *every* file, not just the country file. I'll fix this in the next release. Just an FYI in case anyone runs into this. - Jim -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , http://www.ad1c.us __ Dx4win mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Dx4win@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN Data Updater version 3.0 released!
At least one person has made this mistake, so I'll explain it here. I've already updated the web page. If you want to add command-line options to the update program, or change the window colors, you can ONLY do this to the (desktop) shortcut icon, not the program icon itself (the one in your DX4W### directory). I hope this saves people some confusion. Also, I did *not* include the configuration files in the .ZIP file. I'll do that next time. You can only download them from the web at this point. The next release of the updater will have two new features: -upd will check if the updater program itself has been updated. It will download the new version into the UPDATE directory, but you'll have to copy it yourself to your DX4W### directory (you can't update the program while it's running). This is optional, because some people may not want to download a 4 MB file automatically. -call= will save a backup copy of your DX4WIN log file (.DXL> in the BACKUP directory, before doing any data updates. This will also be optional, though there is no reason not to do it. 73 - Jim AD1C -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , http://www.ad1c.us __ Dx4win mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Dx4win@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
