A year or so ago I embarked on a project to determine the efficiency and
the "sweet spot" operating parameters of my KPA500. I drive my KPA500
with my Elecraft K3S.
Armed with a good 50 ohm dummy load, two watt meters {one on the input
and one on the output}, and my EXCEL spreadsheet, I
Have you tried to reload the firmware? Sounds as though a bit or two
is out of place. Use the KPA500 Utility to accomplish this.

Ken,
I have the same amp but have not experienced the problem you describe.
When issues like this occur it is best to isolate the suspect device to
minimize the variables.
Before doing anything have you tried turning off the power switch on the
rear of the amp? Wait 10 seconds then turn the
Hi guys
While I'm waiting for Elecraft support to come forward with a suggestion, I
thought I'd share my KPA500 (sn 0212) Amp's fault to see if it rings any new
year bells with anyone...hi
Just be4 Xmas I started getting an occasional fault whereby the Standby switch

Robert,
It is possible that the fault is brief enough to register in the fault
table, but not turn off the amp.
The 65 to 85 volt range is to be determined with the amplifier turned
on, but not keyed and certainly not running at 500 watts.
Do as the manual indicates and measure you AC
My KPA500 was purchased new in July 2017. Use regular 120V outlet.
I run the red transformer tap to keep my transmit HV above 60 at full 500
output.
The yellow tap did not provide sufficient voltage on transmit. Thus the
red.
I have a whole-house surge protector just outside my main breaker box.
Arcing. Try reducing power and see if the faults go away. Raise the power
gradually from low and see when the faults appear. Where faults occur and
why is another subject.

I just found out that there's a Rework Kit E850607 for the KPA500. It
replaces Q5 (a FET) with a Darlington Transistor. The kit also includes a
Zener Diode, resistors and capacitors and includes changes to the 12 meter
LP filter. The kit applies to board REV D9 or earlier.

Sure, as long as the pinouts are the same, and the voltage and current
ratings meet your switching requirements.

Hi fred,
The parameter is Rds(on),max The IRFSL9N60A is .75 ohms at 9.2 amps and the
IPA50R399CP is .399 ohms at 9 amps. Q4 and Q5 are in series with a 100 ohm
resistor and the diode so the difference in the R DS(on),max has little
effect.

I wonder if anyone on this reflector could offer advice to the current
H44KW DXpedition. They have 2 new KPA500's with them. One has gone down
the first day. The fault is The linear is not putting any power out what so

Neil,
Please contact Elecraft Customer Support at K3support 'at' elecraft.com. We
can help out the DXpedition assessment efforts and help determine possible
remedy options.

Hi Neil,
let them check if the connection wires between PA board and output connector
are still in place! I had that failure once, too. The plugin-connection is not
as strong as it could be ...

I am enjoying my new KPA500 coupled with my K3, and I have set up the K3 to

Hi Len
My KPA500 is normally set to PWR ON = STBY, which is the factory default
setting.
But after setting it to OPER for a test, I noticed the same thing.
I suspect this is a timing issue, just like leaving the K3 at low power on
band change if BAND CHG is set to STBY.
