I thought I understood this but appears that I had it wrong.
According to the SMTR calibration procedure, it is set with the PRE on and
ATTN off. Calibration sets a 50uV signal to S9 and a 1uV to S2-S3. See this in
the Calibration Procedures section of the manual (p51 in my 2009 version).

I’m pretty sure the K3 has an S-meter absolute mode that adjusts the S-meter
reading when preamps and/or attenuators are turned on.
The KX3 is supposed to have that mode, but it is not implemented. From the
manual errata:
"Not implemented: S-meter absolute mode (MENU:SMTR MD); addressing of
Does that also apply to the K3?

I have noticed with my KX3 that the S-Meter is not calibrated that is 50

I thought it might be with the preamp off.

I am having a lot of fun learning as much as I can about the KX3 and really
enjoy using it. I have been playing with PSK-31 and using the Data mode with
FlDigi. The frequency range I am able to work is about 400Hz on low end due to

Dave,
For several reasons I would advocate DATA A mode over SSB (or ESSB) for
data modes.
First, most data mode signals are contained within the 300 to 3000 Hz
range when the VFO is set at the 'recommended' data mode band frequency.
Secondly, it is easy to move the VFO knob to hear and decode

Phil,
There is no TX TEST mentioned in the KX3 manual, but look for Off-Air
Code Practice -- If you select PTT-CW (by holding VOX) hitting the key
will generate only a sidetone (unless you tap XMIT) -- this is a direct

This feature isn't supported on the KX3 at present. However, you can

No, you can't do this with the mini loop antenna, you need a good
strong signal source. Please read all the gory details at:

Works only with MCU 1.22 firmware.

I stil think that the owner's manual is telling us to do the
calibration, and the kit assembly manual is telling us not to. As I'm
lazy, and the kit assembly manual is more recent, I chose to not
calibrate. But I think there should be an erratum to the owner's manual
about this.

Yes, the Owner's Manual does tell you that, Jon. However, Errata A2-2
dated July 5, 2012 states:
MAKE THESE CHANGES TO YOUR MANUAL BEFORE BEGINNING ASSEMBLY...

Joel,
Thanks for the clarifying comment below. I remember reading the errata and

about the change to calibration (you noted below) and then forgot about it.
This was done in the rush to process all the errata sheets to get
In the past, instead of transcribing the content of the errata into the

errata #1 and so on. Saves a lot of writing.

Gang, I just finished putting together my KX3 with the filter option, ATU, and

The flashing LED is on the KXBC3 board and indicates the processor on that

Yes. This is correct and Elecraft has a configuration file for your KX3 by
your serial number including configuration/calibration data for any options
such as the filter.

Where is this located? I mean, the instruction saying that
configuration/calibration of the filter is not required if shipped with the

The information on calibration of filter is in the owner's manual. The
version I have, it is on page 32 under the heading CALIBRATION. It
clearly states that if the filter and KX3 were ordered and shipped at the
same time, the filter calibration is not needed.

This was mentioned several times here on the KX3 reflector. I didn't

OK, maybe I am misunderstanding something or mis-stating this question of
calibration/configuration.
First, my page 32 in my owner's manual DOES NOT have a section called

statement:

Page 31 of the owner's manual states that if you install a KXFL3 during kit
assembly, you need to run the receive sideband calibration on page 32. I don't
think this was done at the factory, as my cal values were quite a bit different
from the default values in the rig.

you do a better job of it in your own shack after you assemble your

Using the menu entry PREAMP, you can actually select 10 dB, 20 dB or
30 dB. According to the manual, 30 dB is the default for 6m.
The 10 dB preamp is also the isolation amp.
The 20 dB preamp has a better noise figure than the 20 dB one. The 30
