With my poor antennas and equally poor propagation (with only a couple of
exceptions, they were ESP) working the TX9 from here in the Southeast was
NOT easy for me! Like some others, I also spent pretty much the entire
period of their operation chasing them on about 5 hours of sleep per night.
Folks:
This note just received from the XYL of Paul Bartlett, M3CRQ. I have edited
it slightly, for content applicable to the reflector.
We will miss Paul on the Elecraft reflector.

I'm at the module pre-installation step of my K2 and am confused by the
pre-installation instructions for the XV60.
It looks like some of the parts have been re-numbered, and I can't
figure out what steps of the XV60 manual to perform.
I have read the D and F K2 manuals and the XV60 manual,
At the risk of starting yet another discussion on the virtues of the
Hakko 808, I have a question. Now that I have fallen under the spell of
the tool, it is very obvious that it needs a holder. The holder that
Hakko advertises doesn't do a very good job, allowing the 808 to flop
over on the
Hi:
I have built more than 70 K2's and all of the other Elecraft kits. Let me
build your radio. My rates are very reasonable and you will receive a finished
radio ready to play. Please email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Thank you

It seems that some people have problems with low audio out on some K2's. There
was a recent thread where I mentioned that it may be possible to easily
substitute an LM386 for the LM380 AF amp and get more gain. I'm happy to report
that this works FB.
In actual practice, I used an NJM386BD,
I figured it out -- it is the K160RX, not the K60XV. Duh.

Jack,
I have not built it yet, but have been thinking about the same thing.
I am inclined to simply use a piece of pipe to stick it into - I would mount
a 1 inch pipe flange to something sufficiently large and heavy to serve as a
base, thread a short nipple into that and top that off with a
About 9 months or so ago, I went through the CW and SSB alignment process
using Spectrogram. I was able to get the software loaded and running, but I
could not get the filters aligned correctly using that method.
I then re-tried the method used in the manual, and was able to get
them aligned in

Another alternative to fit the 386 in the place of an LM380 audio amp in the
K2 would be to cut the print on the affected pins and fit insulated wire
straps to change the print layout. Have not checked the 386 pin out to confirm
the details, but pin 5 would need isolating from ground on the
As I begin starting on K2 # 4277 I recall something about

page in the manual do I need to notate as to pay extra attention to possibly

Thanks Glenn
I built this K2 with great care and have enjoyed it very much. It is a
proven preformer. I
have worked all states QRP and worked 135 countries using it. It is a
great rig, but I want to build another. So I offer this one for sale.
It is in excellent condition and comes with many options.

A high wattage soldering iron stand could probably be pressed into use to

John,
For filter alignment with Spectrogram, you should be using a source of
broadband noise at the K2 antenna input (like the Elecraft N-Gen or
'dead-band' noise). Attempting filter alignment with a single signal input
(such as from a signal generator) can lead to confusion and frustration.

However, because of the problem with clipping at high signal levels, I
definitely don't recommend that anyone do this unless they're desperate for
more audio. The LM386 is a lower-power part and is also noisier than the

After the damage experience when carelessly placing a hot soldering iron in

I think we're on the same page, Mike. I just want to make sure builders
know there are other alternatives before they jump into a different AF
amp IC. Lord knows I've designed LM386's into a lot of rigs (the NorCal

Whilst the 808 topic is running, are there any recommendations on
spares/consumables to hold for the Hakko 808 from more experienced

About the only consumable I've needed so far (in a couple years) was a
supply of the white (ceramic paper) 2nd filter (part

Hi
It looks like you have the K160RX manual and the K60XV manual mixed up. C13,
C14 and W1 have to do with the K160RX not the K60XV. I assume you are
installing the 60 meter/transverter option. In that case you will remove W6 and
install J13 and J15. You will change C71 to 120 pf and add the
Leigh,
I was looking for your references in my K2 rev F manual and found some of
the phrases you refer to on page 71. All the steps you refer to are under
the pre-installation of the K160RX option (for the 160 meter band and RX
antenna).
