Hi all, can anyone give me some pointers on muting the KX3 when using it as a
receiver and transmitting with the FT 1000mp mk-v field and kpa500 combo.
I intend to use a coax relay as the isolation device!
Has anyone tried to use the KX3 and another rig in this configuration??
Cheers

I have not noticed this problem with my setup. I have the headset plugged in
the back. I do have a inline volume control built in to the headset but I think
I keep at full volume most of the time to drown out the external speaker.
My only thought is, do you have speakers + phones selected? If
I stil think that the owner's manual is telling us to do the
calibration, and the kit assembly manual is telling us not to. As I'm
lazy, and the kit assembly manual is more recent, I chose to not
calibrate. But I think there should be an erratum to the owner's manual
about this.
Jon LA4RT
Yes, the Owner's Manual does tell you that, Jon. However, Errata A2-2
dated July 5, 2012 states:
MAKE THESE CHANGES TO YOUR MANUAL BEFORE BEGINNING ASSEMBLY...

as follows:

Stu,
I would advocate using two coax relays and connect the KX3 to a dummy
load when the FT 1000MP is transmitting. As for muting the KX3, the
easiest way I can think of is to set the power to zero and activate the
PTT with yet another relay contact.

This has been mentioned in the past.
My k3 purchased in November 2010 did not have this problem. It did show up
later after SW updates.Search the archives and you may find a solution.
I thought this was on the to be looked at list by Elecraft.

Thanks for the reply - I'll look at using an older version of firmware.

Ray,
There is one more thing to check. Use an external wattmeter and a dummy
load - check to be certain the actual output power is somewhere near
what the K2 indicates on the display during a TUNE.
If the displayed power is nowhere close to the actual power, then you
need to fix the power
OK - I'll shut up now. I received a detailed email on doing reflector

the bill for me. Thanks for taking the time to get me up and running -

Joel,
Thanks for the clarifying comment below. I remember reading the errata and

This was done in the rush to process all the errata sheets to get
So, just now (this morning) using the KX3 and learning all about it. I have my
KX3 sitting on my desk and the antenna hooked up to my 80-meter dipole. My K3

So, while tuning the KX3 I can see a peaked signal moving across the P3 display

Yes, it's normal, due to the direct conversion architecture of the KX3. Turn
on the KX3's RX isolation preamp to minimize this.

Mark,
I believe that the parts list errata for the KXBC3 is wrong. Those are
supposed to be flat head screws. I submitted an error correction on Friday to
Elecraft and got an acknowledgement. Other then that, I did not find anything
awry from the regular assembly instructions.

As I remember my Heathkit SB-100 from 1966 had an internal pot to provide

In the past, instead of transcribing the content of the errata into the

The headphone jack doesn't use the same output amp as the internal speaker.
To use the headphone jack you need external amplified speakers.

Yes, there is some falloff in the response if you try to use 192 kHz
