There is way less casual CW operation than there was in '79, '89, and
even '99. Except for contesting and DXing, CW is close to being dead.
Foreign phones, RTTY data stations in the lower portions of the CW
bands and the ARRL/FCC elimination of CW-testing will finish it off. If

be nice to save some $$ initially by buying only the FM filter and
using
the DSP to limit bandwidth in AM. Any possibility of this?

No interest in ESSB and little interest in phone, but for casual AM use,
could the FM roofing filter be used or is it necessary to purchase both
AM FM filters to be able to receive and transmit on all modes?

Geoff,
Everyone has pretty much covered the topic on the phony messages. I've
gotten them too. However, your comment about contacting a real live person
at eBay is a good one. They are there but apparently days behind answering
inquiries. Since time is a major issue when dealing on eBay,
I find the crystal filter more than adequate for my type of CW operation and
have felt no need to add any audio filtering.

Had these been available when I built my K2, I would be more enthusiastic
about adding options. The one feature of the K2 I don't care for is the
heat sink and mounting of the final transistors. I don't relish the thought
of taking the heat sink on and off and messing with those little
winding toroids are not hard, just time consuming and boring.
I found winding the toroids a lot less boring and time-consuming than
installing several hundred resistors and capacitors that I could hardly see.

The disadvantage of no-code is that if new hams aren't required to learn
CW, how are they going to be able handle emergency traffic from our
low-powered battery-operated K1's and K2's? Since emergencies are one of
our reasons for being and CW gets through with simple equipment where other
Mine has a sticker saying Made in China on it. That pretty much tells you

Hi Kevin,
My K2 is S/N 4795 and I'm located in Tempe, AZ. Could just barely hear you
at times on 20 and same on 40 at beginning of the net. I was able to copy
you pretty well by the end of the net.

Paul,
I had the same problem a few weeks ago. You'll need to request a 12uH choke
from Elecraft for L31 and that will solve the problem.

I'll answer this since the experts don't seem to be available at the moment.
1. Yes, you should be able to receive signals on the 40-meter band.
2. You should have full headphone volume now.
Good luck and I'm sure someone will be able to help you track down the
problem if there is one.

What about the 0200 net, Daniel? Or didn't it count since I was the only
check-in and was running a TT Argonaut? hi. I enjoyed working someone
using a K2 and hearing what it sounded like as I hope to build one soon.

Is the K2 unsuitable for listening to SSB if the KSB2 isn't installed?

The SSB filter is much more pleasant to use than the CW filter set for
a wide bandwidth. The SSB filter has a flat passband, whereas the CW
filter, being varactor controlled, develops a lot of ripple by the
Thanks for the replies Don, David, Philipe. Sounds like it ought to work.
I'm a CW man on the verge of ordering a K2 but like to just listen to SSB
while I'm puttering around the shack.
