Use the third button down and the right side of the P3 front panel - called

I always use the P3 in Tracking mode, and normally my SPAN is set to 11, which
gives me a display of + or - 5.2 kHz on either side of the main VFO frequency.
This works for most pileups (on CW, where I usually am) except for some of the
recent DXpeditions (K1N, TI9/3Z9DX) that seem to like large splits.

I have my normal SPAN assigned to FN1 on the P3, so I can return to it easily.
For the wider SPAN requirements, I have FN2 set to SPAN 20 kHz (+ or - 10) and
FN3 set to SPAN 32 kHz (+ or - 16). I can quickly move to the bandwidth I need
using this method.

Hope this helps.

I'm using the MMTTY engine with WriteLog for contesting, and I find the 400Hz

Re: [Elecraft] K3/KPA500/KAT500 SWR problem

up into the Red with the KAT500 utility recording values of 5-25!

I agree that first you should connect your output directly into a 50 ohm dummy
load and see if you see the same symptoms or if everything looks normal. If
it's normal there...

Your symptoms of SWR jumping up as the power is increased seem very indicative
of a bad coax shield connection on your RG58 or RG8 feedline. I would carefully
inspect your PL-259s and any barrel connectors that may be involved in the
feedline path to the antenna, for looseness in the shield connection to the
PL-259. Probably best would be to make up a new coax feedline with new
connectors and make sure the solder connections to the shield side are very
solid.

Hope this helps.

[Elecraft] KPA500 affecting 160-meter reception

2013-11-08 Thread John Bastin
I’m having an issue with the KPA500 amp and my 160-meter Inverted L antenna; I
wonder if anyone on the list has ever experienced something like this or has a
suggestion where to look for the problem?

My setup is a K3 transceiver, the KPA500 amp and a Ten-Tec 238C antenna tuner,
connected to a collection of antennas, switched either in the tuner or using a
couple of external coax switches (the tuner only has four outputs). One of the
outputs is routed to the 160-meter Inverted L.

The KPA500 is seeing about a 1.2:1 SWR to the Inverted L through the tuner. It
loads well and shows no problems transmitting, either low power when disabled,
or high power when the amp is enabled.

The problem is, when I push the button to OPER on the amp, the received signal
on 160 drops about 20dB (as evidenced by the signal level display on the P3).
There’s no change in the loading, and the amp still puts out full power with no
problem, but understandably this makes it much more difficult to hear the
station I’m trying to work.

All the other antenna selections and bands, using my quad or the G5RV work just
fine and I don’t see anything like this happening. I’ve checked grounds
throughout, including the connection to the radial system on the Inverted L and
haven’t found anything visibly abnormal.

I’ve also connected the Inverted L feedline directly to the KPA500, taking the
tuner and the coax switches out of the circuit. In this configuration, the amp
sees about a 1.7:1 SWR to the feedline. There is no change, I still get a huge
drop in received signal strength when I switch in the KPA500.

I would appreciate any ideas you may have about where I may have a problem. TIA.

I'll also put in a vote for that. I won't speculate on the housing or
engineering of it, but I would love to have a good pair of stereo speakers (I
use split operation with the sub rx extensively) that would have good
communications audio, allowing me to not have to use headphones all the time.

I've tried different speakers with the K3, but nothing that I've tried really
sounds good or works well. I'm sure the people who engineered the radio could
give us the best match and the best performance.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 KAT500 in WPX

Just thought I'd pass this along in case others may have experienced

Over the weekend in the WPX contest I noticed that I was occasionally being
replied to as EA3IU rather than K3IU. After the first couple of times, I
noticed that each time that it happened, I had just made a large frequency
change on a band and the KAT500 had briefly reacted with a small change.
Thinking about it, if the first element of the K ( _._ ) is being shortened
by action of the KAT500, then what was being sent would certainly be
 interpreted as EA( . . _ ) rather than K. I'll do some testing with a
separate receiver (my K2) and see if I can duplicate it. I'll also re-read
the manual on the KAT500 to see if I can make it less sensitive to in-band
freq changes. I know that there are changes in settings that can be made.

 73, Ken K3IU

What contest software were you using and how were you generating the CW?

I noticed the effect you're talking about, running WriteLog software and using
PC Generates for CW. The CW was very short and choppy, and you're right about
the first part of the first character element being chopped off. The effect was
constant and didn't seem to be related to any frequency changes.

I worked around it for the contest by using my Idiom Press K3 electronic keyer
to generate the CW instead of the computer. It slowed things down a lot, but
the CW was good and I didn't have recognition problems.

My solution to the problem is going to be to use an external keyer to generate
the computer CW instead of the computer itself. In my case, I have a W5XD
Multi-Keyer that I used with my Yaesu rigs before I changed to the K3 rig; I
had taken it out of service, thinking I didn't need it since I'm no longer
going to be running SO2R, but I guess I need it for the CW.

And another thought, after your frequency change, is the KAT500 not changing
until it sees some RF? It seems that when you make a large frequency change,
the KAT500 should be following you and updating when you tune the radio, based
on settings it has already determined, not waiting until you start to transmit
to make the change.

Hope this helps.

You'll find out when you build the KPA that the top needs to be kept clear.
 Air
intake is at the top, and exhaust at the rear. It moves a lot of air when the
fan hits high gear :) Others have put the tuner under the amp. It also helps
to hold the tuner down when you hit a button. I'm more than likely going to
 do
the same thing when I get mine.

I thought that, too, so when I set up my K-Line I put the KAT500 under the
KPA500 on the desk. Then I saw the setup at Dayton, where they had the KPA500
with the KAT500 on top.

I asked the person at the booth and he told me that there is no problem running
the amp with the tuner on top, that they are designed to have adequate cooling
when installed in that position.

Hope this helps.
