I still enjoy my K1, too. A favorite qso was going to a nearby park in

I always liked the K1 ad quoting a compliment by a Heathkit chief

Re: [Elecraft] I/Q details for the KX3.

2022-06-22 Thread Mike Markowski

Jerome,

This answer is for generic SDRs, since I don't have a KX3.

An SDR always must use both I and Q, even for CW. I and Q are two
streams of samples of the same signal. One of many advantages to i/q
sampling is the ADC's can run slower (cheaper). In the extreme and
ignoring the intrusion of real life components on sampling, a 10 kHz
wide signal could be sampled with I and Q ADCs running at 10 kHz.
Nyquist is satisfied because you have 2 streams, or 20 kHz sampling in
this example. Aliasing prevents you from using just I in that case.

The fact that Q is 90 deg from I, means we can plot them on axes 90 deg
apart. That allows re-appropriating the entire field of complex
mathematics to work with the samples. I and Q are both physical -
trying to avoid the word 'real'! - streams of samples, but I can be
called real and Q can be called imaginary. Using Euler's Formula, they
can be bundled into a concise exp(j phi) formulation to work with.

I/Q imbalance is always a concern. Maybe others can quantify it better
than me saying smaller is better. :-)

Hello,

Although I have asked some of these questions on another forum, here I have
expanded on them a bit.

When the KX3 transmits a CW-signal, are both I and Q used?
If so, why would that be necessary?
(My guess is only the I is needed.)

Same questions too for a SSB-signal.

But, for any digital transmission like RTTY, FT8, or Olivia, wouldn't both I
and Q would be active?

The LO is used for the "In Phase" and is delayed by 90 degrees for the
"Quadrature"; how is that delay done?
How much can the delay deviate from 90 degrees and still be useful?

My reason for asking is that I'm to give a talk to the Radio Club in August
about how a KX3 works and want to mention these details.

TIA for any replies.

It would be very interesting to read a technical "why we changed this"

Moving on to the K1, receive filter bandwidth is controlled by changing

A great analogy is from Keysight. In the lab I work in, scopes and

As to Elecraft software, no, it is not compatible with modern versions
of linux without some effort. For some odd reason, Elecraft only makes
32-bit binaries available. You can load those libraries onto Ubuntu,
but it's a lot of bloat. I chose to use unofficial 64-bit versions which

Can you explain this a little more? It's probably clear to many, but
not me. :-) I think of 'channel' as the RF channel, but this is used
differently. A demod channel as opposed to what other sorts of channels?

Also, since an fft/ifft change over between frequency and time is the
norm in SDRs, why does it matter at what point processing is performed?

Re: [Elecraft] Will there be a K4

2019-03-25 Thread Mike Markowski
Eric,

On the computer side of things, how about:

1. Ethernet, socket-based communication with rig. Imagine AUTO INFO
replies direct to IP/port! No more clashing programs.
2. Everything controllable by commands (like RF gain).
3. Info directly gettable. E.g., no need to 'decode' display.
4. State directly settable. No need to emulate series of button pushes.
5. Pixel based display can convey much info when used with care. (Graphs,
block diagram showing what is affected by a control. Things like, but
better & more compact than, my old K2DSP code:

At work (RF lab), dBm power units let a feeble-minded engineer :-) use
plus/minus rather than times/divide with Watts for calculations.

For isolation and other calculations in the ham shack where Watts are
used, a few python one-liners useful. (Python is free and runs on
Windows, Mac, linux.) When in python, copy the following:

from math import *
w2dbm = lambda x: 10 * log10(x/10) + 30
dbm2w = lambda x: 10 ** ((x-30)/10)
iso = lambda pwr_W, iso_dB: dbm2w(w2dbm(pwr_W) - iso_dB)

and now something like

>>> iso(1500, 60)
0.001500

tells you that 1500 W with 60 dB isolation leaks 1.5 mW to the other port.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 in International carry-on luggage?

2018-05-25 Thread Mike Markowski
Somewhat along those lines, at work our Keysight tech rep (formerly
Agilent, formerly HP) was driving to a customer location and had a
backseat full of electronic lab measurement equipment. He said the LO
in something set off a police radar-detector detector, and radar
detectors are illegal in the state he was in. After being pulled over
he was certain the cop would see a back seat full of cables, high tech
gadgets, and think he was up to no good. He told the cop he didn't have
a radar detector and they could go through the equipment to find the one
that set off his detector. The cop looked at all the gear and just said
to keep driving. :-)

Jim points out that there is no value to power in the low frequencies,
they carry almost no information.  Watching the P3 waterfall with a
narrow span demonstrates dramatically how many SSB signals have all the
power in the lows, crammed up against the suppressed carrier, and next
to nothing out where it would be beneficial.

Re: [Elecraft] Art of Electronics

2018-04-08 Thread Mike Markowski

Robie,

I don't have all editions to compare, but think newest is usually best.
Maybe others know better? The book is an intro, though very detailed!,
and doesn't cover much in the way of RF to my recollection. It would be
a foundation that makes RF design easy to follow, though.

Others might have better recommendations for ham-specific books. But if
you leaf through something like ARRL's "Introduction to Radio Frequency
Design," you'll probably get more from it after a book like Art of Elec.

Re: [Elecraft] k3util 32-bit problem on Ubuntu

2018-03-22 Thread Mike Markowski
Thanks, Gordon. lib32bz2-1.0 is not known by Ubuntu, but after some
experimenting and googling based on your help I discovered:

 apt-get install lib32stdc++6

Progress, but now:

 ab3ap$ ./k3util
Failed to find/load Framework library
/home/mm/ham/elecraft/k3/k3util_1_15_6_27/./RBGUIFramework.so: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory

Quick hack, I copied k3util into the "k3util Libs" directory [Unix name
with space (?) :-( ] But no joy:

  ab3ap$ ./k3util
  Failed to find/load Framework library
libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or
directory

Easy, right? Install the aging gtk2:

  ab3ap# apt-get install libgtk2.0-0
  Reading package lists... Done
  Building dependency tree
  Reading state information... Done
libgtk2.0-0 is already the newest version (2.24.31-2ubuntu1).
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

I forgot. It's of course 64-bit, as one would expect, so:

  apt-get install libgtk2.0-0:i386

however this wants to install very many old 32-bit libraries. Ugh. I'm
reluctant to turn my machine into a relic for this old software, though
my K3 will become a (firmware) relic if I don't. Not a good solution
either way. Debating what to do...

[Elecraft] k3util 32-bit problem on Ubuntu

2018-03-22 Thread Mike Markowski
This is similar to the KX3 seg fault thread that is ongoing.

For the first time in a few months I tried to run k3util on a 64-bit Ubuntu
17.10 system and discovered that it no longer works. I assume some OS
update removed the 32-bit files I used. I *think* I used to have ia32-libs
installed for that. I could be wrong, though, since that seems long out of
date.

Has anyone using Ubuntu got k3util to work?

Elecraft developers, any chance of a 64-bit version? (Does anyone use
32-bit anymore?)

I'll tack on some possibly helpful info below. Thanks!

Thanks, guys, for understanding - and being interested.

It is a fun kit to build and is from Four States QRP Group,
http://www.4sqrp.com . This a regenerative design based on the famous
Paraset and Atlantic Hopper, which Four States calls the Bayou Hopper.

I had my first qso on it yesterday and it really takes a bit of a fine
touch to continually tune with one hand while the op is transmitting.
But it's all part of the fun! It puts out about 5 W to 6 W.

And then Agent 99... :-D

[Elecraft] python k3 interface

2017-12-31 Thread Mike Markowski

Happy 2018, fellow Elecrafters!

This note shares nothing earth shattering, but something I find much
more useful than expected. Using python, a super simple programming
language, I just wrote a small k3 library of commands do simple things
like retrieve or set frequency, keyer speed, enter/leave no-Tx mode, and
so on. Maybe an hour or two of programming. As you need more commands
you simply tack on more to your code. A sample run - whose source code
any interested are welcome to - with comments is below. But programmers
can easily write their own in short order. Wayne (et al.?) have made it
a snap.

Re: [Elecraft] Suggestions for Introducing a 10-year-old to Amateur Radio and Electronics

2017-10-15 Thread Mike Markowski

Ted,

When my now-21 yr old son was about 14, he had by then earned his
Technician and learned CW. At that point he had an iPod and put an
iambic keyer app on it. He thought it would be fun to use as a key but
I pointed out that that would be modulated CW and not actual CW. Using
his interest as an opportunity to teach some electronics, here's what we
did:

1. Bought some equal valued resistors. Then we could use series and
parallel to get values needed. A nice simple lesson there explaining
why that is.

2. Bought a quad op amp chip. This is harder to fully teach a kid, of
course, but we wired up one as an inverting amplifier showing how the
feedback resistor divided by the input resistor determines the scale factor.

3. We wired up another as a comparator using a potentiometer.

4. Used an NPN as a switch to key the rig.

In the end, ipod (now, smart phone!) audio goes to the amplifier.
Amp out goes to comparator whose output is triggered by cw audio in.
Comparator output goes to NPN switch to key rig.

And then you have the world's most high tech key. :-) We topped it off
by having him solder together the circuit on perf board and mount it in,
of course, an Altoids tin. Maybe a mini project along these lines would
work, tailored to suit his interests and age.

Good luck!
Mike ab3ap

[Elecraft] Question for SP3 owners

2017-09-09 Thread Mike Markowski
My current shack speakers need replacing and I read about the SP3s.
Aesthetically, no question they are nice and I'm impressed Elecraft
contracted a specialist to design them. I don't take the K3 anywhere -
just K1! - so ruggedness is not a need.

In such a situation have any here bought SP3s and have opinions to
share? Room size, previous non-SP3 speaker quality, hearing, and so on
make comparing advice difficult, but I can't resist asking.

[Elecraft] CP1 vs other directional coupler

2017-05-28 Thread Mike Markowski
I'd like to get a directional coupler to, among other things, monitor my
transmit signal on a scope.

The Elecraft CP1 kit is priced well, but I'd want it in a metal box with
panel mount connectors, SO-239 for the main RF path. I'd also rather
use 50 ohm terminators rather than switches, so at that point it
probably makes sense to build my own. Just curious what others have
done and if there are recommendations for reasonably priced,
commercially available directional couplers for HF at 100 W or more.

Re: [Elecraft] Feynman - A little theory

2017-04-16 Thread Mike Markowski
Feynman was the adviser of a now-retired coworker, Ben. He told Ben to
give up study of physics unless it was a true passion because that was
the only way to succeed in anything. Ben said he realized this was the
only advice he needed to change majors and later succeed in his new
field. His main regret in doing so was losing Feynman as adviser. Not
exactly related, another retired coworker as a young researcher used to
take a train up to Princeton each month to lunch with Einstein. I loved

I bought a Raspberry Pi Zero W a few days ago for a project and then

the Zero W's are tough to find and often out of stock, thought I'd offer
up the set here if any are interested. I'm selling as a set for exactly
the price I paid. I bought them last week and they have not been
removed from bags/boxes. Luckily I read more on the project before
doing that. If only I read that much -before- purchasing! :-)

Raspberry Pi Zero W: $10.60
Mini-HDMI / HDMI cable [QVS]: $26.49
USB 3.0 hub + SD card reader + OTG adapter [inland iH3048A]: $15.80

[Elecraft] K3: Using Linux - OT

2016-07-31 Thread Mike Markowski
Regarding networking linux and Windows, it's not an issue these days.
At work our lab has a network of gear from Keysight, Tektronix, and
Rohde & Schwarz, as well as Windows and linux computers. Absolutely no
issues and none of us are IT guys. We managed - thank you, Google! - to
set up one machine as dhcp server, ntp server and file server. Another
runs an ubuntu mirror since our lab must remain off the internet.

We record and edit signals with Keysight software on Windows, automate
tests in python on linux, and run Matlab on both OSes. A web server for
the lab makes data accessible throughout. We find that Windows is good
for 'canned' software when you need to run commercial stuff. When you
need to do custom work linux is the way to go. To format higher
mathematics use LaTeX on either OS.

Bringing this back to ham radio, I think OS can be chosen along similar
lines. Mix and match what you need with whatever OS supports it. Our
lab is proof that it's not hard anymore.

I'm far from a hard core contester but enjoy DXCC, Field Day, etc. For
me the best solution has been xlog along with hamlib & cwdaemon. I made
a small NPN transistor-based circuit in an Altoids tin to do serial port
based PTT keying for cwdaemon. (I picked up an Edgeport usb-to-serial
converter on ebay for $20.) It's a simple set up and works well for my
level of contesting.

It also has the advantage of keying any rig. I use it with my K1,
though of course hamlib can't interact with that rig.

Bill,

Popular packages to consider:

1. Rig control: hamlib at http://sourceforge.net/p/hamlib/wiki/Hamlib/
2. Light weight logger: xlog at http://www.nongnu.org/xlog/
3. dxcluster: xdx at http://sourceforge.net/projects/xdxclusterclient/

4. Heavy weight logger: cqrlog at https://www.cqrlog.com/

Cqrlog is worth considering because it handles up/downloading to many
qsl sites like Log of the Word, Clublog, etc. But it uses MySql and

The funny thing, Nate, is this is a project that Pf ik5pvx and I started

for air time instead! :-) Especially after a week at work, a weekend

I think someone else got further on such a project but can't recall the

Re: [Elecraft] Analog vs. Digital Front Ends

2015-09-15 Thread Mike Markowski

Don,

The broadband jammer is the most traditional of all in electronic
warfare. If a receiver can withstand substantial AWGN (additive white
Gaussian noise), chirp, and CW jam, then that's the receiver for me. :-)

I am going to go off on a wild tangent as a method of testing all
receivers for the ability to copy signals in the midst of very crowded

have analog front ends or an ADC.

An extremely crowded band could be simulated by broadband noise.
So take a medium strength single signal (say S-5) and inject it into the
receiver under test.
Now add a low amplitude broadband noise signal, and increase it until
the signal is buried in the broadband noise.

The receiver that can withstand the greater broadband noise level while
still recognizing the single signal "wins".
That says nothing about the overload of the ADC for those receivers that
put the ADC at the antenna - that is something for other test parameters.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SP3 External Speaker details

2015-09-15 Thread Mike Markowski
Following up on Jim w6aim's comment, a friend of mine used to design
cell phones was amazed at marketing people. She says the difference in
memory options, e.g., 16/32/64 GB, had an actual cost difference of
US$1. But the marketing group turned it into $100 difference - and
people pay. She said the engineering group incorrectly believed no one
would fall for it!

Regarding radio speakers, I currently use out of production Dell
computer speakers, left overs from work:

  http://www.amazon.com/Dell-A525-Computer-Speakers-Subwoofer/dp/B000GSVPLO

which are great with K3 and also listening to streaming music, youtube,
etc. They cost well under $100. If pair of Elecraft speakers cost 4x
as much & offer 4x as much (any specs yet?), it's a good deal. But
aesthetic value is uniquely personal - which is why such a long thread!
For me, Dell will likely be fine. :-)

Re: [Elecraft] Memory Manager for Linux?

2015-07-14 Thread Mike Markowski
A few years ago in C on linux I played around with determining the
undocumented memory map. Pierfrancesco Caci IK5PVX joined in later and
we spent some time decoding binary returns after changing a single
setting. We made good progress, but it's tedious and we instead
returned to on-air pursuits! Turns out I don't use the memories too
often anyway. I have other tiny C programs more useful to me. It's
possible to reverse engineer, though I never went so far as to write
into memory for fear of doing something regrettable. :-)

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Settings Retrieval Software

2015-03-09 Thread Mike Markowski

Hi Sverre and all,

I just recompiled the programs so that Java Web Start is no longer used.
I have only a linux machine to test things on, so can't guarantee
things will run properly on other OSes at this point. Please email me
offlist if things don't run.

A few quick things about http://udel.edu/~mm/ham/elecraft/ :

1. Executables are now available as a zip file.
2. Source is now available as a .tar.bz2 file.
3. W1 also works with a W2 but not KAT500 despite a menu entry.
4. Please don't judge these spare time efforts too harshly. :-)
5. GUI work was often created with netbeans, so the netbeans-generated
code is ugly when viewed with something other than it.

Regarding (4), these are programs that work for me, but have not
undergone any sort of serious testing. If you improve upon them, I'd
love to get your updates! For the coders, a word of warning that
internal documentation is often somewhat, ah, lacking...

Therefore, after quite some struggle with browsers and security, it was a
relief to find out that I could run the K2 Settings Retrieval Software from
the command line in Windows by just typing in

javaws params.jnlp

after having downloaded params.jnlp to my harddisk. I realize that the
security issues are caused by calls to your website. If a 100% local program
could do the same, then perhaps that would make it simpler, but I am just a
user, not a developer of these things, so I don't really know what it takes.

I just wanted to remind the list of the AB3AP software found on
http://udel.edu/~mm/ham/elecraft/

I'm especially fond of the software for K2 Settings Retrieval about which
he says Save your K2 set up in case of an unexpected reset.

I have just serviced a K2 where the previous owner had had soldering
problems (untinned toroids, solder bridges, ...) as well as settings which
were far off. I find it useful then to start by reading out the settings to
figure out what the starting point is, as well as backing up all the values
when the calibration has been completed.

The AB3AP software is in the form of Java programs. My web browsers don't
allow them to be run, but simply downloading the code and running them from
the command line works fine. For a PC this is javaws params.jnlp.

Hi Urb,

Probably CONFIG - PA is set to BYPass. Change it to NORmal and you'll
have your PA inline!

[Elecraft] Scope, anyone?

2014-10-12 Thread Mike Markowski

Hey all,

I have an analog scope, excellent in its day:

  http://udel.edu/~mm/tektronix/

If interested, please contact me. It's yours if you can pick it up.
(Sorry for poor phone pics. Camera pics can be provided.)

I also was given an old Heathkit scope, ca. '62, from the estate of an
SK. Also free for the taking.

Re: [Elecraft] Slide rules

2014-08-15 Thread Mike Markowski
I have a couple nice bamboo Hemmi slide rules, one even devoted to
electronics calculations, but my most cherished is a cheap 12 log-log
plastic Sterling. My late mom bought it for me from a drug store when I
was in 8th grade. It took weeks of begging and groveling till she gave
me the $6 for it. Then I'm sure I drove my parents crazy showing how I
could calculate things. Geek from day one. :-)

[Elecraft] OT: US Signal Corps rhombic book

2014-05-16 Thread Mike Markowski
Sorry, gang, seems I posted my last note as html which I was told was
stripped resulting in an empty message. Original follows.

=

Hi all,

Are any interested in a pdf of

Construction of a Rhombic Receiving Antenna, US Army Signal Corps,
March 20, 1943

It's 37 pages long, 15 pages of which are text and the rest tables
drawings, and is7.3 MBytes. It lays out the heavy duty design of
rhombics as built by the then-US War Dept, not a backyard ham antenna
project! But a ham or club lucky enough to have enough land and spare
change might make use of it. Also, it contains no theory whatsoever.
Rhombic Antenna Design, by AE Harper, Bell Telephone Laboratories,
1941 is a good and similar vintage companion in that regard. Harper's
report also contains construction details.

I've mentioned it before on this list, but before US Army Ft. Monmouth,
NJ closed a few years ago I enjoyed using their one surviving rhombic of
the 2 originals. Thinking of how much fun that was got me reading up on
rhombics recently. Some photos of that shack just prior to shut down:

Re: [Elecraft] External controls for the K3?

2014-04-03 Thread Mike Markowski

Hisashi,

Not as convenient as physically remoting the buttons, but I wrote a
small C program that sends commands to the K3. I then made some short
aliases using that program name. If I type the letter a the K3
sends my call, AB3AP. If I type 9 it sends R 5nn TU (7 sends R
57n TU, etc.). No cramps. :-)

I'm embarassed to admit this but I have a question:
In CW pileups, I usually have M1 programmed to send my callsign and M2
to just send the standard callsign 5NN TU. The thread on ergonomics
made me think about the cramp I get in my hand holding it up by the top
of the rig.

Has anyone ever thought about remoting out the M1-M4 buttons? If it's in
the manual, I apologize; I'm not running on all cylinders today.

Re: [Elecraft] Current version of Windows K3 Utility ?

2014-02-28 Thread Mike Markowski
I did the same a few days ago using an out of date linux K3 Utility. What
a bad feeling. :-o

I wonder if the firmware can be distributed with a file (or somehow with
info) indicating the minimum K3 Utility version number required. That way
an out of date K3 Utility can complain about its aged decrepitness and not
even try to do an update that will fail.

Re: [Elecraft] My first Field Day...Wow... what a rush!

2013-06-23 Thread Mike Markowski
Sounds fun, Phil! I wasn't quite so far from home. I operated from the
exceedingly remote and primitive conditions of my back deck. Scant
remains of a single bottle of Scotch provided sustenance for the event.
Luckily it and the 7.5 Ah battery held out for the duration. Such
difficult conditions anytime soon would be taxing, but 79 contacts at 5
W, including Germany, no doubt leave the top guns slack jawed and
envious. (Laughter? Is that laughter?...)

More seriously, you can see my watch for logging attached to the stand
of the K1. There are also small paddlettes with red finger pieces.
There was something refreshing about sitting out back with a few sheets
of paper, pencil and radio. Most ops were sending at 25 wpm or less. A
fun few hours, highly recommended. Pic of me (also submitted to arrl
soapbox), the K1, a single malt:
