I leave everything at the defaults, unless there's something that i'm
certain I want to achieve. This goes for all settings, including USE, and i
usually use package.use rather than USE= in make.conf.

So for me there's no specific python/ruby etc settings in make.conf, but
there's still eselect, and i generally keep away from the newest and oldest.

Try unsetting python settings in make.conf and run an emerge -avuUD world
to see what you get.

BTW, for ~arch users python:2.7 is pretty much gone. For me, I just have
some gnome stuff which depends on dev-libs/gjs, which depends on
dev-lang/spidermonkey:68 which depends on python:2.7.

[gentoo-user] python variables

2020-10-02 Thread William Kenworthy
Hi, I am still having problems with the python settings.  There a lot of
articals online for python on Gentoo but they all seem to miss a simple
point: a list of what the current default should be:

should there be nothing in a properly configured system (all handled
automaticly)

PYTHON_TARGETS etc listed in package.use, or should it be in make.conf -
lots of variation!

Should 2.7 be listed at all still?  Chasing the emerge breakage trying
to get this right is getting old fast :(

e.g., I am using the following in make.conf for a system that only needs
python 3.8 (with 3.7 just in case I need it) ... for other systems
should I specify what I think is rrequired, or leave blank?

USE_PYTHON="3.8"
PYTHON_TARGETS="python3_8 python3_7"
PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET="python3_8"

It's based on Ubuntu so it may still have zfs.

I have heard of that distro, there are some others like it as well, I

Probably not. And a good thing too.
Assuming the above is an accurate transcription of the command you used.

-update is definitely NOT the same as --update.

-update is equivalent to -u -p -d -a -t -e
so --update --pretend --debug --ask --tree --empty-tree
--debug, --tree produce voluminous output,
--empty-tree says rebuild everything.

Hope this helps.

Don't want to beat a dead horse, but zfs is also one of the reasons I
use the ubuntu cds. It is easy to get zfs running on an ubuntu
livecd. I forget if it is preinstalled, but I'm pretty sure it is all
packaged so it is basically a 1-2 liner to add it. I haven't looked
at it recently but the Funtoo docs suggest doing the same which is
where I got the tip.

At the time systemrescuecd didn't support zfs out of copyright
concerns. Perhaps that has changed. People have strong feelings on
zfs. I get them, though it is 100% FOSS (even if the licensing was
engineered to cause GPL issues). IMO the biggest technical issue with
using it on linux is that it basically pulls in a bunch of other BSD
logic around stuff like caching so it isn't super-clean from a kernel
perspective. However, that is also part of why it is so stable - they
basically containerized the thing so that they didn't have a bazillion
regressions, and I think they've been slowly working on getting rid of
the middle layers.

Personally I tend to use Ubuntu - mainly because it just gives you a
nice desktop experience and just works. I can easily fire up a full
browser, open all the xterms I want, and so on. I really don't care
about its pros/cons long-term because it is just a livecd - the

I dunno.  I tested the installer thing when it was first announced years
ago.  It failed to install.  It kept getting hung somewhere but with no
output that I could find, I didn't know what was wrong or what to fix.
I ditched it into the trash and went back to the trusty manual install.

I think the OP has vision problems.  I guess a installer of some sort
would be easier in that case, provided it doesn't error out with no
output.

I have used the minimal cd, but I would think any gentoo cd would have
the speakup module in it, you can always check by downloading the iso,
getting to the /lib/modules directory -- which might involve mounting
a squashfs file system -- and checking if the speakup module is there.

I usually use it. When I've tried to use systemrescuecd, I usually
ran into issues: you couldn't follow the handbook step-by-step and
expect it to work (IIRC, something to do with chroot?). There were
fairly simple work-arounds, but it took time to figure out what was
wrong and what to do about it.

I've never used a gentoo-live-cd and the reason I use the gentoo-minimal

Nowhere in his post does he say that. It explicitly refers to the minimal CD.

That said, the email you replied to (which wasn't from the poster) had

In any case, I have no idea if anybody has a working installer at this moment.

I was talking about the Gentoo installer.  I'm thinking the OP is using
the installer to install Gentoo.  I'm not sure of it but it's possible.
I noticed in one post that the OP seems to be using a text to speech
tool which may be the reason they are using a installer.  It may be
easier that way.

Seamonkey does its own thing with email replies.  It seems to be based
on what others do and ignores what I've told it.  I manually requested
plain text for this one but to be honest, I'm not holding my breath on
it listening.  All emails going to gentoo.org or kde.org are supposed to
be plain text only.  It's been set that way for many years now and it
worked until a good while back.  I've done my part and told it.  I can't
fix it.  Maybe it's a feature.  lol

The minimal CD, or creating mountpoints? The former has always
existed, and the latter has existed since the 70s.

And please add non-html quotes - I really don't want to have to edit replies...

As far as the minimal CD goes, you an just create mountpoints, but
really I'm not sure why anybody uses it in the first place. I just
use a liveCD from ubuntu or whatever - there are a bazillion liveCDs
(including Gentoo-based ones), and just about all of them are more
useful than the Gentoo minimal iso. I'm not sure why we even produce
one, except maybe for the same reasons everybody sets the default
editor to nano. :)

I wrote a lengthy reply explaining all of your issues. Here is a snippet:
...hope that helps. In the future, please attach your command line
and full output.

Did that answer your question?

Seriously, though, aside from complete output (if it is long it
probably will compress nicely), if you are getting errors and can't
proceed try reducing the scope of the build (such as just @system).
It isn't actually clear if emerge was able to resolve the block or not
from the trimmed output. Adding verbose can be helpful for those
troubleshooting, but not if it just causes you to not post the output
in the first place...

Thanks. At least I learned how to use the rubber end on gentoo's

Good, then all the files which were built and any errors encountered would
still be left in the temporary work directory for this package under /var/tmp.

The actual error printed by portage will point toward what went wrong and with
a bit of research a solution can be found.

If an emerge did not complete successfully and came up with an error, then it
would not have installed anything on your system. Whatever emerge built may
have been left under /var/tmp/portage/sys-libs/timezone-data, unless 'fail-
clean' is not specified in your FEATURES.

 emerge --info | grep fail-clean

2020-10-02 Thread Jude DaShiell
I made another mistake and need to find the exit.
I did emerge sys-libs/timezone-data which downloaded that package and
dependencies and then errored out badly when trying to build the packages.
The native in COMMON_FLAGS in /etc/portage/make.conf was not recognized by
what I downloaded and that emanated several more errors.
Will it be possible to wipe out the last emerge effects on the system?

You can use the env feature to set any environment variable you want,
they don't have to be portage related. You can drill down to the
category/package quite nicely.

Did the emerge complete without error? The answer that question is the
same as the answer to yours.

It looks like you have gone a long time without updating, so if you hit
problems, and you do have one block there, a simple "emerge --ask
@system" /may/ be a better place to start.

I'd also drop -v from the invocation as it is the main cause of your
"spurious debugging/tracing info". emerge is verbose enough on its own
and will give you plenty of feedback if something isn't quite right, -v
just buries the important information in noise.

[gentoo-user] Environment variables on package granularity

2020-10-02 Thread Daniel Armbruster
Hi gentoo-user,

is there a way to set environment variables on package/ebuild granularity? I'm
aware, that plenty of portage related environment variables are configurable by
means of the package.env feature
(https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki//etc/portage/package.env). However, I didn't find
a way to set additional environment variables.

The actual reason, why I'm asking is the following: When compiling
app-emulation/qemu, package installation fails when calling the preprocessor.
Though, I'm able to manually solve the issue when setting the CPP environment
variable:

# export CPP="gcc -E"

before running emerge. Instead of running the command again and again i.e.
before every reinstallation of app-emulation/qemu, I'd like to set this
environment variable for the package once (in e.g. a configuration file) and
it's done for every future reinstallation.

Regards,
Daniel

(332 upgrades, 30 new, 10 in new slots, 497 reinstalls)

I'm not quite sure where you are putting that command tho.  Script maybe?

Is it still supported?  I thought it was abandoned again a good while
back.  That thing has come and gone so many times, I can't keep up with
when it is active or isn't.

Still think it is easier and you learn more doing it manually.  Each
his/her own I guess.

[gentoo-user] emerge @world output unfamiliar. Am I updated?

2020-10-02 Thread n952162

Have I successfully updated my system?

I ran this command:

emerge \
    -v \
    --verbose-conflicts \
    --deep \
    -update \
    --changed-use \
    --keep-going \
    --with-bdeps=y \
    --changed-deps \
    --backtrack=100 \
    @world

and got tons of stuff that looks like spurious debugging/tracing info

  parent: (dev-libs/glib-2.64.5:2/2::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for
merge)
    child: (virtual/libelf-3:0/1::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for
merge) (runtime_slot_op)
  parent: (dev-libs/glib-2.64.5:2/2::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for
merge)
    child: (virtual/libelf-3:0/1::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for
merge) (runtime_slot_op)

and these snippets:

Total: 869 packages (332 upgrades, 30 new, 10 in new slots, 497
reinstalls), Size of downloads: 2769158 KiB
Conflict: 1 block
forced reinstall atoms:

slot operator dependencies:
   (/, sys-libs/ncurses:0)

forced rebuilds:

I haven't used the Gentoo installer discs for years, but you should be
able to create your own mount points.

You seem to have used a slash in the package-category there, sys/libs
vs. sys-libs in the instructions. If you change that it should work
for you.

[gentoo-user] re: install problems

2020-10-02 Thread Jude DaShiell
This time, when updating @world I decided to not merge anything.
I got up to:
Next, reconfigure the [365]sys-libs/timezone-data package, which will
update the /etc/localtime file for us, based on the /etc/timezone entry.
The /etc/localtime file is used by the system C
library to know the timezone the system is in.
   root #emerge --config sys-libs/timezone-data

And that command produced:
!'sys/libs/timezone-data ' is not a valid package atom.
! please check ebuild (5) for full details.
! did you specify a version but forget to prefix with '='?)

Probably an instruction may be missing from the handbook with that =
character in it. Before this failed command I did:
echo 'America/New_york' >/etc/timezone.

I'm using the printable version of the handbook if that makes a
difference.

[gentoo-user] installation problems

2020-10-02 Thread Jude DaShiell
No mount point on the minimal isos exists under /mnt where an installer
can temporarily mount another drive to copy output of errors or created
scripts that help them get around gentoo's installer limitations.
Earlier tonight I had been fighting with links since links insisted on
downloading an image rather than the stage3 file my cursor was located on
according to speakup.
I ended up putting the base url in a bash script along with an empty
download variable then using another computer to get the name of the
stage3 file and copying that into the download variable. Then I ran the
script which used wget for the download. My latest mistake was to try to
save that bash script since as soon as I left /mnt/gentoo everything on
/mnt/gentoo went away and all I was left with was a lost+found
subdirectory which was empty.
I at least still have the four partitions remaining on the gentoo disk.
It's also lucky I'm using drive sleds. The decision to remove lynx from
the isos I think was not a good decision for screen reader users. Now I'm
going to go back and repeat all of this stage3 download work and also
forget to save that bash script.
