[gentoo-user] IP Masquerading hardware, crossover versus hub
I want a setup such as at http://www.fs-security.com/docs/pics/complexnat.png and am reading http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/IP-Masquerade-HOWTO/index.html to that end. However, there are just two machines, the gateway and a secondary. There's also a diagram at http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/IP-Masquerade-HOWTO/ipmasq-background2.5.html. The gateway (?) is arrakis, the other machine is geidi_prime. Arrakis has a wireless connection, so geidi_prime needs to connect via arrakis for the internet. The two computers will probably be 20+feet apart. Would it make more sense to use a hub or crossover cable? thanks, Thufir -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

I've yet to replace a failed power supply, so this is hypothetical for me. [gentoo-user] screen flickers/static
I recently switched from fedora to gentoo, it's a dual boot system. Never in Fedora, not in windows, but in gentoo, I get screen flickers/static. It's not a hardware problem as just a little bit ago I was in windows, no problem. The connections to the monitor and so forth are fine. When I type in, for instance, this window (gmail in firefox) the screen flickers with each keystroke. Also, if I'm in the terminal window, for gnome, and type, same thing. Perhaps flicker is a bad description. To the nake eye a series of horizontal lines flash, about one or two per key stroke. [gentoo-user] addusr (gentoo v. fedora)
Pardon, but I'm not clear on this command, apparently. Coming from fedora, I could just create a user, change the password, login, and everything would be set. However, gentoo doesn't create /home/user_name ? No problem, I created that directory. However, startx as that user gives errors. I can capture those errors, but apparently I'm going about this the wrong way. ? I also tried creating a user from gnome but ran into the same problem. Right now I'm running as root :( thanks, Thufir -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

[gentoo-user] is DHCP required when using two NIC's?
I have two NIC's, one which is built into the mother board and one which is recently installed (this is on a dual boot system). before installing the second NIC I was able to configure an 802.11b/g network adapter from windows, and everything would run fine under linux. after putting in the new NIC on this particular computer, that's not happening. So, I'm thinking of configuring the network adapter from linux. because there are two NIC's is it now required to set up a DHCP software daemon (if I have that right)? thanks, Thufir the hardware: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;169289 http://www.ecsusa.com/downloads/manual_k7s.html http://usa.asus.com/prog/spec.asp?m=WL-330glangs=09 http://www.dlink.ca/product.php?PID=124 -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

[gentoo-user] plain-vanilla ethernet; do brands matter?
I urgently need a second ethernet (RJ-45 telephone-looking type) NIC in my computer, which is about a year old, el cheapo but with USB 2.0, so decent for my needs (sorry, don't have mother board details at the moment). the local store is willing to install a SMC one for a good price. my only concern is the brand. ethernet is very well understood and I just need plain-vanilla, but I don't want to have to fiddle with anything, configuring hardware or whatever, if the hardware doesn't run well under linux. does the brand matter, or will anything that says ethernet fit the bill? I'll be plugging a telephone adapter into one of the NIC's for VOIP, the other NIC provides the internet connection (via an asus 802.11b adapter which plugs into an RJ-45 port). pardon, but the need for VOIP is urgent and great, so researching this well doesn't seem to be an option. thanks, Thufir -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

[gentoo-user] installing to VFAT partition
I'm looking at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1chap=2#doc_chap3 and have a few simple questions. currently I have a dual boot system, with fedora core 3 and windows 2000. will gentoo show the different partitions and ask which ones to install on? will it show VFAT, NTFS and ext3? thanks, Thufir -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
