[gentoo-user] Celeron is i686?

2006-08-19 Thread THUFIR HAWAT

Is a Celeron D Process 310, 2.13 GHz, 533 MHz FSB, 256 KB L2 Cache
considered an x86, i586 or i686 in terms of the stage 3 tarballs.
Which is best for that type of chip?

That's P4-based, so it's a i686.

[gentoo-user] format ipod shuffle as fat32?

2006-08-19 Thread THUFIR HAWAT

I just got an ipod shuffle, 1gig, for free. Apparently it has
different partitions for music/data and must by synced with iTunes to
a specific machine?

Err, is that so?

If so, can I just format the darn thing and use if for mp3's?

It mounted fine, I put an mp3 on it and played that mp3 with xmms and
my headphones in the _computers_ jack.

However, that's rather pointless.

[gentoo-user] booting slave; specify which device and how?

2006-08-15 Thread THUFIR HAWAT

How do I know which device to specify?

This is the error message I get on boot:

Activating udev
Determining root device

!! Block device /dev/hda4 is not a valid root device...
!! The root block device is unspecified or not detected.
Please specify a device to boot, or shell for a shell...

There are two hard drives. The slave has gentoo and win2k. GRUB
seems to work fine, windows boots fine.

The slave was removed from one box and put into another.

IDE (or rather PATA now) devices on linux are named in order of the

hda: master on first PATA channel
hdb: slave on first PATA channel

Understood, thanks.

I seem to have mucked things up a tad by formatting hda so that I
can't boot windows at the moment.

I'm thinking about how to edit grub.conf at the moment...

If I change the above hd0 to hd1, will that fix grub? At the moment
Grub isn't loading, however, as hd0 has been formatted.

So, hd0 needs a boot partition, then at least knoppix will run from
the hard drive.

Ok, easiest thing here is probably to install knoppix, give a MBR to
hd0, then I can mount hd1. I'm going to continue with installing
knoppix. If I knew a bit more about grub then I'd fix grub so that
it'd boot gentoo (hd1,0), gentoo (hd1,4) and knoppix (hd0,0), but I'm
a bit hesitant.

[gentoo-user] Re: copy xorg.conf from knoppix

2006-08-09 Thread THUFIR HAWAT

The wiki mentions knoppix in relation to xorg.conf, but I don't follow
what's happening in the knoppix configuration.

The xorg.conf on the hard drive, generated by gentoo, is being moved
so that knoppix can use it?

So, can't just replace /etc/X11/xorg.conf from gentoo with the knoppix

Richard wrote:

AFAIK this will work fine, but I have never tried it. You could copy
it to some other name, like /etc/X11/xorg.conf.knoppix, and then use
X -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf.knoppix to test it. Also watch out for
ModulePath; you may have to remove or fix it if it shows up in the
Knoppix config file. It should point to /usr/lib/xorg/modules.

from http://hawat.thufir.googlepages.com/xorg.conf.knoppix.txt
a few lines:

   15 Section Files
   16 RgbPath /usr/share/X11/rgb
   17 ModulePath /usr/lib/xorg/modules

so that, at least, seems ok.

I'm operating under the assumption that it's a problem with xorg.conf,
of course.

The knoppix version isn't working due to something with RGB.

[gentoo-user] IP Masquerading hardware, crossover versus hub

2006-08-09 Thread THUFIR HAWAT

I want a setup such as at
http://www.fs-security.com/docs/pics/complexnat.png and am reading
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/IP-Masquerade-HOWTO/index.html to that
end. However, there are just two machines, the gateway and a
secondary.

There's also a diagram at
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/IP-Masquerade-HOWTO/ipmasq-background2.5.html.

The gateway (?) is arrakis, the other machine is geidi_prime. Arrakis
has a wireless connection, so geidi_prime needs to connect via arrakis
for the internet.

The two computers will probably be 20+feet apart. Would it make more
sense to use a hub or crossover cable?

Thanks for completing the picture :)

arrakis connects wirelessly to the 802.11b router. The router belongs

I like that of the two replies, one was hub and one was no hub :)

Is it a problem with the FQDN? On re-reading the FAQ, I changed the
hostname as I don't own gmail.com, but I *do* have an account with
gmail, so...

I also have a thread on news.softwear.readers, pardon for the
multiposting. I was just trying to address the telnet issue here.
Most of what's been written in reply goes over my head.

[gentoo-user] leafnode and xinetd.conf

2006-03-26 Thread THUFIR HAWAT
I'd crosspost this from news.softwear.readers, but I don't have
leafnode configured yet ;)

Here is a sample /etc/xinetd/leafnode entry. The entry in the server
field has to point to your locally installed leafnode executable.
Dependent on the installation, this executable may not reside in
/usr/sbin but elsewhere (e.g. /usr/local/sbin if you installed
leafnode from the source code).

service nntp
{
disable = no
flags   = REUSE
socket_type = stream
wait= no
user= news
server  = /usr/sbin/leafnode
log_on_failure += USERID
}

No running windows found

Usage: /usr/bin/acroread [options] [list of files]

Options:
--display=DISPLAY
This option specifies the host and display to use.
--screen=SCREEN
X screen to use. Use this options to override the
screen part of the DISPLAY environment variable.
--sync
Make X calls synchronous. This slows down the program considerably.
-geometry [widthxheight][{+|-}x offset{+|-}y offset]
Size and/or location of the document windows.
Note: this option is position dependent, and can be
specified multiple times. The geometry specified only
affects the list of files following it.
-help
Prints the common command-line options.
-iconic
Launches in an iconic state on the desktop.
-setenv var=value
Tells the main application to perform the equivalent of
C-shell setenv var value.
-tempFile
Indicates files listed on the command line are temporary files
and should not be put in the recent file list. The document
title will be the title in the pdf document, instead of the
filename.
-tempFileTitle title
Same as -tempFile, except the title is specified.
-toPostScript [options] pdf_file ... [ps_dir]
-toPostScript [options] -pairs pdf_file_1 ps_file_1 ...
-toPostScript [options]
Converts the given pdf_files to PostScript.

In the first form, if the last file specified is a directory,
then all preceding files will be converted to PostScript
and the generated PostScript files will be placed into ps_dir.
If a directory is not specified, then the PostScript files
will be placed in the same directory as the original file.

In the second form, the file list contains pairs, each
consisting of a PDF filename and a corresponding PostScript
filename.

The third form specifies a filter, reading a PDF file from
standard input and writing the PostScript file to standard
output.

Note: When using -toPostScript it must be the first argument
passed in on the command line.

The following are valid options for the conversion of PDF to
PostScript:

-binary - emit binary PostScript where possible
-start int - identify the first page in the document to be
converted (default is the first page of the document)
-end int - identify the last page in the document to be
converted (default is the last page of the document)
-optimizeForSpeed - emit PostScript such that all fonts are
emitted once at the beginning of the document. This
results in faster transmission times and smaller
PostScript documents but requires more PostScript printer
   virtual memory.
-landscape - rotate the pages to print landscape
-reverse - reverse

[gentoo-user] screen flickers/static

2006-03-23 Thread THUFIR HAWAT
I recently switched from fedora to gentoo, it's a dual boot system.
Never in Fedora, not in windows, but in gentoo, I get screen
flickers/static. It's not a hardware problem as just a little bit ago
I was in windows, no problem. The connections to the monitor and so
forth are fine.

When I type in, for instance, this window (gmail in firefox) the
screen flickers with each keystroke. Also, if I'm in the terminal
window, for gnome, and type, same thing.

Perhaps flicker is a bad description. To the nake eye a series of
horizontal lines flash, about one or two per key stroke. The system
monitor isn't showing anything out of the ordinary, low CPU usage and
low memory

 Hi,

~x86 means that this package is marked as unstable because it needs
some testing, if you want to test it (don't worry, I've my whole
system in ~x86 and it's quite stable), just unmask it this way :

 echo net-www/mozplugger ~x86 /etc/portage/package.keywords

You'll have to create /etc/portage/ if it's the first time you use the
 /etc/portage/* files ...

 Boris.

Thanks, Boris. I figured it was stable enough for everyday use, but
figure it's masked for good reason. I imagine the worst mozplugger
could do would be to crash firefox (unless there's a larger problem
with firefox), but am kinda gunshy about unmasking stuff. I'm finding
portage very easy to use, but it's a bit of a surprise how long it
takes to compile stuff! :)

Ah, thanks, guys. I think that portage is approximately equal to yum
in the PITA dept. With yum I was always having to hunt down new
repositories, and periodically it'd fail for dependancy reasons.
Portage is much easier to use, until something which is needed has
to unmasked. Interesting, though :)

You have xmms in your USE flags (default gentoo USE flags, I

wants to install xmms too because mplayer can use xmms or
parts of it (I don't how) if you want.

Yes, xmms is in my default gentoo USE flags. I was interpreting that
to mean that xmms is installed, but really that means, apparently,
that as mplayer can use xmms, there will be a connection from
mplayer to xmms. Furthermore, if application_x also uses xmms, there
will be a connection from application_x to xmms, and, of course, xmms
is only installed once. Ok, think I got it :)

 Hi.
You don't have to format your windows partition, you don't even toch it.
 Just format /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00
and /dev/hda2 and install gentoo on /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00 as
 described in the handbook.

When gentoo is installed completely you just edit grub.conf and you are
 fine:
 Add
 title Windows
   rootnoverify (hd0,0)
   chainloader +1

and you can boot into Windows.

Thanks, Robert. Before doing anything, I just wanted to make sure

[gentoo-user] addusr (gentoo v. fedora)

2006-03-21 Thread THUFIR HAWAT
Pardon, but I'm not clear on this command, apparently. Coming from
fedora, I could just create a user, change the password, login, and
everything would be set. However, gentoo doesn't create
/home/user_name ? No problem, I created that directory. However,
startx as that user gives errors. I can capture those errors, but
apparently I'm going about this the wrong way. ?

I also tried creating a user from gnome but ran into the same problem.

Right now I'm running as root :(

[gentoo-user] is DHCP required when using two NIC's?

2005-06-20 Thread THUFIR HAWAT
I have two NIC's, one which is built into the mother board and one
which is recently installed (this is on a dual boot system). before
installing the second NIC I was able to configure an 802.11b/g network
adapter from windows, and everything would run fine under linux.

after putting in the new NIC on this particular computer, that's not
happening. So, I'm thinking of configuring the network adapter from
linux.

because there are two NIC's is it now required to set up a DHCP
software daemon (if I have that right)?

thanks,

Thufir

 Hi,
Some time ago, on this ML there was such question/s.
Remember there were some syntax (in grub/lilo) to load one net-card
 first the other second.
 Just search the list-archive.
The card/parameter is given as kernel-loading value.
Or easiest as pointed above, use modules in desired order (haven't
 checked this).

I'll check, thanks. I need to make sure that the cards are being
loaded correctly, that makes sense.

However, you make a good point, Antoine... the driver that has always
worked perfectly for me is 8139too (I have a 8139 A-series). The newer

fact it's supposed to be backwards-compatible. Didn't seem so to
 me.

a friend ended up helping with the hardware part, which was much
simpler than I expected. we spent about half of the time figuring out
how to get the case open ;)

here's what I went with:

http://www.dlink.ca/product.php?PID=124
from

which was only $9.98 canadian. once I actually got to the store it
turned out that compatible drivers include: Linux 2.2/2.4 is written
right on the box :)

so, I bought it for $9.98 canadian and am so far happy. tomorrow I
hope to plug the VOIP telephone adapter into it :)

thanks for help, all. it turned out to be a non-issue, but I was in a
time crunch and need some info right away, thanks again. this NIC
might be a sort of win-modem but at least it works, quite literally,
right out of the box :)

[gentoo-user] plain-vanilla ethernet; do brands matter?

2005-06-08 Thread THUFIR HAWAT
I urgently need a second ethernet (RJ-45 telephone-looking type) NIC
in my computer, which is about a year old, el cheapo but with USB 2.0,
so decent for my needs (sorry, don't have mother board details at the
moment).

the local store is willing to install a SMC one for a good price. my
only concern is the brand. ethernet is very well understood and I
just need plain-vanilla, but I don't want to have to fiddle with
anything, configuring hardware or whatever, if the hardware doesn't
run well under linux.

does the brand matter, or will anything that says ethernet fit the
bill? I'll be plugging a telephone adapter into one of the NIC's for
VOIP, the other NIC provides the internet connection (via an asus
802.11b adapter which plugs into an RJ-45 port).

pardon, but the need for VOIP is urgent and great, so researching this
well doesn't seem to be an option.

El-Cheapo cards will work, but may not be as full-featured or as fast
throughput as the more expensive 3com cards. eg: USD6 Dlink vs USD25
 3com.

One Dlink I got was absolutely horrible. It will hang after a while and
then everything will stop. Once changed the card, it's OK. I think this
was a realtek chipset which caused the issue.

But in general, my experience is, if it's not for too much heavy duty
work, el-cheapo will be good enough.

read the ebuild, I have had a quick look and it seems to use a

It also looks as though a bit of trickery is used to unpack the bin
 file.

if it's using the .bin which enables the ebuild to sidestep that bug
then it doesn't follow that redhat, or whomever, couldn't put out an
rpm using the same trickery.

The ebuild will also tell you where gentoo installs the package,
looks to be in the /opt directory, so I guess the ebuild is not

 Why?

Sun doesn't follow the LFS, which create a problem for RPM's, which
irritates me, sparking my interest in gentoo. then, it turns out that
gentoo, in turn, violates the LFS. this is poignantly contrary to
what was expected, hence, ironic. bit lengthy, I suppose, but there

The Gentoo Installation CDs are bootable CDs which contain a

the CD. During the boot process your hardware is detected and the
appropriate drivers are loaded. They are maintained by Gentoo
