2017-12-04 Thread Bill Kenworthy
I think you are looking for problems that are not there. Almost
finished recompiling the surface4 pro and have one compile failure I
have not looked at - the original palemoon is still working. The
hibernate to disk just failed so it rebooted from scratch and I could
continue working on it while it finished but a full desktop is so much
nicer :) I have some other (slower) systems in earlier stages of the
rebuild that are working fine.

do an emerge -ep world > a
edit a to something like below then "bash a" to run it:
emerge -v =kde-frameworks/kdelibs4support-5.37.0  && \
emerge -v =kde-apps/kio-extras-17.08.3  && \
emerge -v =kde-plasma/user-manager-5.10.5  && \
emerge -v =kde-frameworks/kactivities-stats-5.37.0  && \
emerge -v =kde-apps/okular-17.08.3  && \
blah blah blah ...

When an emerge stops, either fix it or comment it out for later. Edit
"a" and delete finished builds and go again - in the meantime keep
working ...

[gentoo-user] kde-frameworks 5

KDE 5 is in the tree, it's called KDE Frameworks 5.

A quick heads-up to anyone who runs into what I just had. It all started
with this incompatible USE error:

emerge: there are no ebuilds built with USE flags to satisfy
sys-auth/polkit-qt[qt5].
!!! One of the following packages is required to complete your request:
- sys-auth/polkit-qt-0.112.0-r1::gentoo (Change USE: +qt5)
(dependency required by kde-frameworks/kauth-5.13.0::gentoo[policykit]
[ebuild])
(dependency required by kde-frameworks/kdelibs4support-5.13.0::gentoo
[ebuild])
(dependency required by kde-apps/kmix-15.08.0::gentoo [ebuild])
(dependency required by kde-apps/kdemultimedia-meta-15.08.0::gentoo
[ebuild])

And that led into a long change of adding USE=qt5 to several packages,
followed by portage's decision to upgrade to KDE 5, which I've decided
to postpone for a bit.

Most KDE5 packages are in a new category or renamed, but some -meta
package names are re-used like this one:

$ eix kdemultimedia-meta
[U] kde-apps/kdemultimedia-meta
 Available versions:
 (4)4.14.3
 (5)(~)15.08.0

which portage obviously wants to upgrade, and cascades into a full KDE5
upgrade. To prevent this and stick with KDE 4 meanwhile, just specify
the :4 slot for your kde packages in set files or in world, like so:

kde-apps/kdemultimedia-meta:4

In my case I only had to do it for the -meta packages and all was good.

I found I needed the overlay. It greatly simplifies the dependencies. It
still isn't perfect, as changes occur during development, but it's definitely
well worth having.

Howdy,

Same topic sort of so going to try the same thread first. I've run up
on something weird but I'm not real sure where to start looking. This
is what I do and what I get in return. I have my desktop set to folder
view which gives me icons on my desktop. When I click on a folder, it
is supposed to open Konqueror. It does, it really does open konqueror.
It opens it with dozens of instances and more than once went over 100
before I could kill the thing. Obviously, I only need one instance.

My question. What program actually tells it to launch that first
instance? In other words, when I click on a folder, what is it that
tells Konqueror to open? I think I'd like to downgrade that package for
a bit. It seems to have a bug, a really bad one with a lot of legs.

How I got here. Since the plasma thing was crashing so much, I thought
a unstable plasma package might have it fixed. Well, it stopped
crashing after I keyworded a long list of packages and did the upgrade.
Thing is, now I get this multiple instances of Konqueror instead of just
one. Here is a list of those packages.

The file-type icons are still be where they should be, but for some
reason they were no longer associated with their respective
mime types. I've now solved the problem for them by going to the 'file
association' part of system settings and editing the icons for the mime
types which were missing icons.

The program icons which do not show up in the Quicklaunches haven't
changed on my system. They also don't show up in the Kmenu, which uses
the same .desktop files -- I didn't realize that before because I
rarely look at the menu. AFAICS, all the icons that no longer show up
in the menu or the launchers are in /usr/share/pixmaps/. I can use
kmenuedit, which I think edits the .desktop files, to select the icons
which should be displayed, but they're still not displayed.

tortoise ~ #

I then checked my overlays, and it turns out I had an outrageously
bloated number of layers installed:

tortoise ~ # layman -l

 * poly-c    [Rsync ]
(rsync://rsync.gentoofan.org/poly-c )
 * wichtounet    [Git   ]
(https://github.com/wichtounet/wichtounet-overlay.git )

tortoise ~ #
#

I think one of those was because mainline had stopped maintaining
seamnokey and I needed it maintained. No idea what I was smoking when I
applied the other or even which is which. In all likelyhood I had a
problem and applying that overlay solved it and because I didn't have a
problem after solving said problem, I forgot about it and can't really
say what or even when it was I had that problem. All I have now is this
lingering sense that touching those overlays will result in misery and
suffering so it's best not to even look up how to remove either of them.

eclan still shows a large number of outdated packages on the system so
there is definitely lots of updating to work if I can get emerge out of
its current hissy-fit.
