have not delved too deeply into all the options. Perhaps there is a way to turn it into an xmms/audacious clone. Perhaps xmms2 (which moves to a client/server approach) may have a similar lightweight client to the old xmms. Running a server to simply play tunes does seem like overkill to me

alternatives you'll consider trying to compile and install it from downloaded sources, manually. What about XMMS2? It's not in portage but I thought it was designed to fix all the flaws of the original XMMS. I have not tried it so I can't say for sure if its even remotely the same as the old XMMS
