Re: [gentoo-user] alternatives to audacious?
quoth the Denis: I'll have a look at Amarok. Was XMMS removed for licensing issues? No. It's because the code is old and unmaintained. If I had the skill I would pick it up myself, but sadly I don't know what the heck I'm doing with it...I am very surprised that someone has not done this as there seems to be a lot of take xmms out of my cold dead hands sort of folks out there. I am in the same boat as you, I tried audacious as a replacement but it just wasn't working for me. I have many playlists with 1000+ songs on them, and audacious seems to choke on them. When it doesn't outright crash the interface freezes when I scroll the playlist and it reads the id3 tags. Makes it all but unusable for me. Amarok isn't my cup of tea either. I wrote my own scripts to organize my music, and create playlists, and amarok seems to want to organize my tunes for me. Ugh. To be fair I have not delved too deeply into all the options. Perhaps there is a way to turn it into an xmms/audacious clone. Perhaps xmms2 (which moves to a client/server approach) may have a similar lightweight client to the old xmms. Running a server to simply play tunes does seem like overkill to me though... I'll likely get shouted down for this, but when they removed xmms from the tree I simply deleted xmms and related packages from my world file without actually uninstalling them. You can get away with this with emerge, but not paludis. So: I still use xmms, but it will be a version frozen in time for all eternity. Thanks. I gotta give a recommendation for Amarok. It is a kde package so it might not be what you had in mind, but it is a great music player. Amarok is feature-rich, but heavy indeed. I don't recommend it for a drop-in XMMS replacement. If you like the idea of editing mp3 tags and organzing your music really nicely, browsing it 3 different ways and seeing cover art from amazon.com and such, amarok is for you. But if you like xmms, maybe before you try to find more alternatives you'll consider trying to compile and install it from downloaded sources, manually. What about XMMS2? [gentoo-user] Choppy video playback
Hi, I'm having choppy video playback in mplayer, vlc and also in Firefox on YouTube and the like. I notice a video freeze every 1-2 seconds or so, then the video snaps back to where it should be. The audio sounds fine. Mplayer often spits out a warning message[1]. I also noticed that typing into forms (like an email in Gmail) in Firefox, after Firefox has been running a few hours also suffers from this freeze every 1-2 seconds. A typical workload is Gnome, Firefox, Claws-Mail, Pidgin, Tomboy, xmms2 and a bunch of terminals with SSH sessions and irssi. I have an Intel Core 2 Duo 2GHz with 2 GB of RAM, so this shouldn't be happening. I'm running kernel 2.6.23-gentoo-r3. I don't remember when exactly this started, I don't really watch video too often. Could it be the scheduler with which my kernel is compiled? Currently it's set to Preemptible Kernel (Low-Latency Desktop). Any ideas? What to start tweaking with? Thanks for any help, Mike [1] Mplayer warning message: Your system is too SLOW to play this! Possible reasons, problems, workarounds: - Most common: broken/buggy _audio_ driver - Try -ao sdl or use the OSS emulation of ALSA. - Experiment with different values for -autosync, 30 is a good start. - Slow video output - Try a different -vo driver (-vo help for a list) or try -framedrop! - Slow CPU - Don't try to play a big DVD/DivX on a slow CPU! Try some of the lavdopts, e.g. -vfm ffmpeg -lavdopts lowres=1:fast:skiploopfilter=all. - Broken file - Try various combinations of -nobps -ni -forceidx -mc 0. - Slow media (NFS/SMB mounts, DVD, VCD etc) - Try -cache 8192. - Are you using -cache to play a non-interleaved AVI file? - Try -nocache. Ok, everything emerge fine. If i run python-updater again, then i get exactly the same output as before (emerging emul-linux-x86-baselibs:0, BOOST:1.42, etc...) What's wrong ?? According to the list of checks python-updater performs it's indeed weird that it's happening. But maybe python-updater has some undocumented, hidden intelligence.:) If you run emerge or something written in python, do you see (in the process listing) /usr/bin/python2.7 being the interpreter in action? If so, try moving away /usr/lib/python2.6 and /usr/bin/python2.6 (just moving away, not deleting). Does still everything run? Then I believe you can safely get rid of python 2.6 and python-updater will probably stop trying to re-emerge everything. -rz Sounds like it could be the same problem I was having. Boost seems broken for me on two different systems since 1.42.0-r1, at least according to python-updater. I tried 1.42.0 and 1.45.0 as well but still had the same problem, so finally just got rid of boost. Afterward python updated to 2.7 in an orderly fashion, and once I switched from xmms2 to mpd no longer needed boost. -- ...she kept arranging and rearranging the rabbit and kind of waving to it.
